Hard drive error: Invalid Volume Header @ 0: I/O error

The hard drive I was using in my 2010 MacBook Pro suddenly stopped working. There wasn't any early warnings like clicking or other weird sounds coming from the hard drive, it just suddenly stopped working.
I was using my MacBook Pro normally, when it happened. I was listening to music, then the music stream stopped and it couldn't play any files. Then the spinning beach ball came in and slowly everything else stopped working. Eventually the whole system froze. I waited for about 10 minutes, but it still didn't respond and I forced my MacBook Pro to shutdown. Then I tried to boot it up again, but nothing happened for several minutes, it just showed a grey blank screen. Then, after several minutes, a flashing folder with a question mark appeared on the screen. I googled what that means and I know that the Mac isn't able to find the drive to boot. I tried OS X Recovery, which used to work perfectly, but now it went straight to Internet Recovery, and I figured that the Mac wasn't even able to find the Recovery disk, indicating that something is really wrong. I tried Internet Recovery and it worked, and I was able to use tools like Disk Utility from it. Disk Utility didn't even recognize my drive at that time.
Then I decided to take the hard drive out of my 2010 MacBook Pro, put it in an empty external hard drive case and connect it in my other Mac. Finder didn't recognize this drive but Disk Utility did recognize it, but it didn't recognize any partitions. I ran "repair disk" and then it gave me the errors in the screenshot.
The hard drive in question is a 1Tb Western Digital drive and it was about 1.5 years old.
So my question is that has anyone got a solution for my problem or is my hard drive officially dead?

And if I click "Repair Disk" again, Disk Utility gives the following error: "Error: Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup."

  • 'Invalid Volume Header' - Repair - is drive safe?

    Hi there.
Failure to mount external firewire 1TB Maxtor
    error was 'Invalid Volume Header"
Data Rescue II recovered files to another drive.
Diskwarrior COULD create another Directory, but could NOT exchange it for the faulty one ?!
I ended up using Disk Utility to Reformat the Drive.
Question is, can I trust this drive or do I need to ditch it?...

Simple answer: No drive is safe.
An error like the one you saw doesn't necessarily have to be indicative of a failing drive and could have been the result of some other system error, a power fluctuation, whatever. Still, if your data is that valuable you should have it all backed up on a second drive too. You can never trust any drive 100% as they can fail at any time. This isn't just referring to mechanical failure but a recurrence of the kind of thing you just saw.

  • Recurring Hard Drive Errors/Crashes After Replacing Repeatedly

I've got a 2007 2GHz Macbook. I've been having repeated hard drive errors for the past few months. First the original hard drive went 100% dead. I replaced it with a Hitachi 350 Gig. After repeated serious hard drive crashes and reformats, I replaced it again with a brand new Western Digital 350 Gig hard drive. However, I am having continued problems with this one now, Invalid Extent entries every couple days, and major errors if I don't run disk utility every other day.
This is leading me to believe that the issue isn't related to the hard drive since I've had similar problems three times in a row. Has anybody else encountered this? Could the problem be elsewhere?

    +I'm assuming that's a bad ram module, am I correct?+
Perhaps, but I'm sorry to report there is much uncertainty about this. See the search of these boards I've added at the bottom, and refer to each listing and its resolution (if reported).
There is usually a "Details" section of the Apple Hardware Test report about the memory - did you see that section of the results?
If not seen, or if it was not reported, open the utility "System Profiler" and look at the "Diagnostics" section to see general results of that last AHT which you ran, and also you should see there the latest results of the "Power On Self-Test" that runs each time a Mac starts up. The normal "Result" for both lines reads: "Passed"
Also check the "Memory" section of System Profiler to see the size, type, speed and "Status" of each individual memory module - your MacBook should have two modules in it, and the "Status" report for each should be "OK"
If your Mac is not covered by AppleCare, it's probably best to use a process of elimination to find the source of the problem.
Are you using your MacBook without an external keyboard and mouse? Those might possibly be the cause of a problem, if connected.
As long as you have the original grey-label Install Disc in the optical drive, your MacBook will startup without a hard drive inside, as the Install Disc contains all the operating instructions that are necessary for the MacBook to operate the Install Disc and everything on it.
It is easy to remove the internal hard drive to eliminate a potential problem source. If corruption of the hard drive is a repeated issue, it would be best to eliminate this hard drive from the mix for testing purposes.
Just as important, as long as you have the original grey-label Install Disc that contains the AHT, the MacBook will startup to the Apple Hardware Test by pressing and holding the d key, again without a hard drive installed.
It is very easy to remove RAM modules from a MacBook for visual inspection to see what markings are on the labels as to size, type and speed. Verify that System Profiler is reporting the same info as is marked on the labels.
Assuming everything is as it should be, replace one module, close up the Mac, and after starting up to the Install Disc, check what the utility "System Profiler" is showing in the "Memory" section of its limited System Profiler. If the Mac starts up cleanly and System Profiler reads "OK" move that module to the other memory slot and same procedure.
If the Mac again starts up cleanly to the Install Disc and System Profiler again reads "OK" next startup from and run the Apple Hardware Test with only that one module to see if it gets a clean bill of health.
If it's ok, then remove that module and set it aside as being a tentatively "known good" module.
Repeat all on the second module by it's self. At this point, you should probably have learned which module is bad - however, if not, go through it all again with both modules installed.
Hopefully by the end, you will have determined a resolution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to correct, such as replacing the logic board. Good luck with it:)

  • Data recover from a hard drive error 301

Can anyone advise me of how to recover data from a hard drive error 301.  I have a pavilion dv7-4177 and i received the hard drive error code 301 two weeks after the warranty expired. I back up my data so I though but when tried to reload that data on a new hard drive it would not take. The damage hard drive will not load the OS now even in safe mode. Is there any way to retrieve this data from that hard drive.

    Hi,
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your files.

  • My Time Capsule is reporting hard drive errors.

    Hi all,
My Time Capsule has been reporting hard drive errors. Unfortunately the problem started right outside of its warranty period. I formatted the drive twice, first time was a quick format, second was a single pass 0 write.
My question is: Now what can I do to make this unit reliable again.
I've seen a lot of these reports. This is exactly why I was hesitant to buy the Time Capsule. The sad thing is Apple advertised this as a server grade back-up device. After just over a year of service, I can no longer count on my Apple branded back-ups.
I'd like to see Apple step up to the plate and rectify this issue for those of us who are experiencing the failure. They've extended warranty periods before when it was clear the product had so many field failures. It's the least they can do.

Ring and ask them.. or go into the local store.
Their local store managers have some flexibility.
Especially if an item is just out of warranty.
You cannot buy applecare for a TC. But applecare on any computer will also cover the TC.. and if you want a cheap way into applecare to cover your TC, buy an Apple TV and buy applecare on that.. then Apple will replace your TC, and you can sell off the unopened ATV.
Total cost is pretty much just the applecare on atv which is cheap.
If you want to replace the disk yourself you can do it easily.

  • T60p Hard Drive Errors in Diagnostics Test

I recently started having problems with my internal hard drive. It is just over 1 year old, a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 5400rpm, 8MB cache.. While trying to extract a few zips, I started getting an I/O Device Error message. I ran a CHKDSK and fixed all the bad sectors. However, even after running the checkdisk, I am still getting errors in the ThinkVantage Diagnostic Tool.
    I have a T60p, model 8743-CTO. Running Windows 7 with 2x1GB RAM.
Here are the hard drive errors I found with the diagnostics tool.
FAILED: Targeted Read Test - Error Code WHD20-P5V
    Error while reading sector 6033483899
FAILED: Surface Scan Test - 2: Error Code WHD08-HMV
There were over 10 sectors with errors
Is my hard drive really failing? Like I said, its a WD Scorpio Blue that I bought just over a year ago, I think they should last longer than a year.
    Any thoughts?

    Hello,
Sometimes hard disk drives fail prematurely.
Just to verify the issue is with the hard disk drive, you might want to remove it from the ThinkPad and connect it to another computer.  The data and power connectors are standard, so this should not be a problem, as long as there is another computer with available connectors.  From there, you can check the drive further, as well as back up any valuable data which might be on the hard disk drive.

  • Hard drive error on boot: HD6 3F6

My PC is usually left on all the time.  I recently went away on holiday for 2 weeks and powered off (it is winter here so the house is cold a lot of the time - this may be relevant as colder conditions seem to make the following issue worse).  When I returned and powered on I got a blue screen hard drive error message "HD6 3F6".  I now get this message at every reboot, but also about every 12 hours on average the computer goes off by itself and I get it again, though it varies from a few hours to a few days.  I follow the instruction to launch diagnostics F2 and have run all sorts of tests - every time it passes the tests so I proceed to boot normally.  This process now seems to take a lot longer than it used to, but at least the PC does boot as normal.  The PC is only about 15 months old and I had to have the motherboard replaced a few months ago under warranty as a BIOS upgrade killed it.  I have had a few issues with Windows Explorer shutting itself down a lot recently.  Please advise what to do, thanks.

Hello , I have read your post on how your desktop computer is displaying an error message "HD6 3F6" on a blue screen, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! Since the hard drive diagnostics indicated in this document came up with no issues, I recommend following the steps in this document on Computer Locks Up or Freezes (Windows 8). This should help correct the appearance of a blue screen.  If the issue continues, please contact our technical support for further assistance in this matter by clicking the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Hard drive error - Corrupt files - Archive and Install?

    Hi
I have been using Onyx for a while and last week it asked me to reinstall the Snow Leopard disc.  I verified this in Disk Utility first and that also advised I had corrupt files.  I installed the disc and all seemed fine when i checked again in Disk Utility.  But now a week later I have the same problem and not sure whether it is a problem with 0SX or my hard drive.  My mac pro is still under Applecare and they advised tonight that I should do another archive and install and if does not fix then to take the machine into my local Apple store.
Red part of Error message is - Invalid volume file count - it should be 362310 instead of 362313 and Invalid volume directory count - it should be 99776 instead of 99773.
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.  - Error: This disk needs to be repaired etc.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem.  I use Aperture 3 & Final Cut Express and until recently had problems getting the two to work together until Applecare helped.
    Many thanks
    Matt

Other people have certainly experienced a corrupt HFS volume header, which is what you have, or did have. It should be a very rare occurrence. If it happens frequently, then your drive is probably failing and should be replaced.

  • Hard Drive errors after update attempt

I have a Macbook with Mac OSX 10.5.7. 2.2 GHz Intel core duo 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM Western Digital 320GB Hard drive
I attempted updating to the newest version and the computer froze part way through. When I tried to restart I got the daisy wheel running on the grey screen, but would not go further. So i put in the Install Disc, and hit power button and shift key. I got as far as Installer, but when I got the window that asked where to install the OS, there were no choices in the window.
I then removed the disc and tried to boot up, which it did. All the data is there, but I did lose my desktop customization. All applications launch OK (I have tried about a third) except Safari. Safari will not launch.
Based on another post in the forum, i went to Disk Utility and tried to Repair the disk. It failed due to a "Invalid Node Structure". So I tried to Repair Disk Permissions (also based on a forum post). That ran OK, but now the Repair Disk button is grayed out. And when I try to Verify Disk, I get the following:
SMART Status is verified, Partition Map Scheme is GUID.
    In the History Window:
    Performing Live Verification
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking Catalog file
(the next three lines are in red letters)
    Invalid Node Structure
The volume MacHD needs to be repaired
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
I have also found that there is no longer an administrator for the computer. It is actually my daughter's, and both she and I have (used to have) administrator privileges. Now in Accounts we are both listed as Standard users. I tried to update software. When asked to give my password, it said I was not an administrator (Using the correct password). Neither would my daughter's password work. The laptop does not think we are administrators.
So now the computer is running, and all data is still on it. But I cannot launch Safari. And I cannot update software (as there is no administrator).
(I have seen some posts suggesting third party software which may fix my disk. But they cost $100 and I can buy a new hard drive for 60 to 80.)
Has anyone a clue as to what went wrong? More important- does anyone know how to fix it??
    Many thanks in advance.
    Mark

After I erase the hard drive (I assume one pass of writing zeros is good enough, 7 passes not needed?) do I turn off the laptop, then turn on and insert the Install Disk? Will there be a prompt telling me when to put in the disk? Or do I put in the disc right after erasing?
One pass is fine. If you've previously backed up your hard drive to an external hard drive using SuperDuper!, which is what I use and recommend, or another program, if it created a bootable drive, you want to boot off of it, bring up SuperDuper! and copy the drive back to the internal hard drive. SuperDuper also makes the drive bootable. When done, reboot, and you should be all set. If you're using Time Machine, you'll want to install the operating system, then restore the Time Machine backup. SuperDuper! is available from http://www.shirt-pocket.com/superduper/superduperdescription.html
Finally- should I update the OS? Is there a problem with the newest update that caused this crash, or was it just a spurious glitch/bad luck?
I've been running 10.5.8 for awhile with no issues, and would recommend moving to it.

  • TechTool 3.03 Unmounted Hard Drive After Repairing Volume Structure

Hi Apple Discussions! Any help, advice or information anyone can share will be greatly appreciated. So here's what happened:
I have a 17" imac Flat Panel. *After using TechTool 3.03 to repair the Volume Structure (had gotten a 92 Error Message) Techtool would not quit.* I turned off the computer and *when I restarted I heard the foghorn sound instead of the regular start up chimes and then got a* *Kernel Panic (You have to restart your computer.)* Since the computer was a gift I didn't know if it was still under warranty but I called AppleCare anyhow. Even though the warranty has expired the rep stayed on the phone with me and tried to help. She had me eject the TechTool disk by holding down the mouse (who knew?) and insert the OSX disc....*Long story short the Hard Drive is no longer mounted.* She set me up with an appointment at a Genius Bar.
I hooked the imac up to an old ibook via Firewire and accessed the imac's hard drive (can't use my new MacBook Pro because it has a different Firewire pin.)
*I also zapped the PRAM and know it chimes on as usual but I still get the Kernel Panic.*
I was curious so I continued to research and I see *Apple warns to not use TechTool 3.03 to repair Volume Structure errors for OSX 10.4 which is what the imac is running.* Of course, if I knew ahead a time....Is this why the Apple rep helped me even though my warranty expired? *She said they just need to remount the Hard Drive. I'm wondering what that entails and can I do it myself?* I'm not looking forward to lugging my imac down to the Apple Store on 5th Ave. in NYC!
Thank you and sorry for the very long story!

Hi Dale, Thank you for your response. When I use DU to Verify or Repair I get this message:
    *Invalid b-tree node size*
That's a pretty serious error. I'm pretty sure even the updated version of TechTool could not repair it.
If I wanted to download the TechTool updater and use it on the imac how would I do that since I can't log on?
I was thinking you could use your iBook at the time. But the TechTool disk is machine specific so that may not work.
I'm taking it in today to a Genius Bar so we'll see.
Hopefully they will run DiskWarrior on it. Otherwise it's an +Erase and Install+. hope you have a backup!
Thank you for your help. I also just learned that it is an imac G5 (oops!)
You are quite welcome! Good Luck!

  • External hard drive error / disk utility not repairing

I am having problems with a particular external hard drive. Device is a Transcend StoreJet 25M (640GB) currently formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It was previously formatted in FAT32, exFat, and also Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It started giving me problems when I used it to store all my music on it. My iTunes library and music files were all stored on it, and at one point iTunes started acting funny - it would play a song for a few seconds, pause, play for a further few seconds, pause again, and so forth. I decided to stop using it and when I shifted the iTunes library to the Mac internal hard drive and the music file into another external hard drive, iTunes worked fine. So I figured it must be a problem with the external hard drive itself.
I recently reformatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and transfered some data on to it (include a back up of the music folder). I noticed that Spotlight keeps trying to index the drive but never actually managed. Times indicated for indexing runs into days. The hard drive tends to be slow to load files expecially when there are multiple folders and tiers, and is generally unreliable. It occasionally unmounts, or when I try to unmount it I get an error saying it cannot unmount because it is being used (but no indication as to which app is using it even if all apps are closed except for Finder).
I tried repairing it using disk utility. The attached image shows the results. It seems that it can't be repaired by disk utility. At this point, and after much deliberation, I would have to questions:
    1. Should I just smash the thing on the floor?
    2. Is there another application I could try and repair it with?
    3. Even though I have reformatted it several times, it keeps giving me the same problem. When I do a disk verification of the hard rive itself it all seems fine, however when I do a disk verification or repair of the volume I get the error shown in the image. Is this a problem being caused during formatting?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh, I forgot to attach image....

  • How do I fix Hard drive errors on my macbook pro?

I ran the etrecheck software on my Macbook Pro and it produced the following results. It says there are 15 errors with the hard drive and I was wondering how I can figure out what they are and possibly find a solution to get rid of them. I have used the disk utility to verify and repair permissions and to verify the disk and the only issue i get during that is this warning during verifying permissions:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
I also should mention my computer has been running slower than normal lately.
Another point is that there is a user launch agent that fails and I was wondering if I need it and how I can fix or get rid of it.
If anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    Joe
