Hard Drive Error, What can I do now?

I downloaded the new iTunes 7 and it gets up to 53% done for the installation? Any ideas as to why? Possible hard drive issue?
I ran the Disk Utility from the OS X install CD. This photo shows the results. What are my options now? This drive was actually replaced last year towards the end of the Apple Care plan and of course the 90 day warranty on the replacement is up.

Well, I would have recommended trying an Archive and Install first, since you had the room on the hard drive to do it. DiskWarrior is a good utility to have on hand. It can often find and repair the hard drive when Apple's own Disk Utility fails to repair it.
Did you repair permissions before downloading iTunes? If not, that may have caused the problem. It's recommended to repair permissions before and after installing new software. Also, it's always recommended to have a current backup when downloading and installing new software in case some glitch occurs. Installing new software without having a backup is kind of like walking a tightrope without a safety net. Riskier.
As far as abandoning the Mac platform, I could never do it. When Apple went from OS 9 to OS X, I thought, "Well, as long as I'm going to have to learn a whole new OS, maybe I'll try Windows," so I tried Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. Ick. That didn't last long.
If you've been reading mostly about the bad things happening to Macs, then maybe you've been looking in the wrong places.

  • Mac mini hard drive crashed. The ecovery drive only offers to reinstall mavericks on the recovery drive. Doesn't see the hard drive. What can I do?

    Hi, I have a mid-2011 with Mavericks installed. It crashed. I can boot into recovery mode. And it shows me the name of the hard drive and the recovery partition. When I boot back to the hard drive, it gives the grey screen and a long progress bar. WHen the progress bar eventually fills up, the computer just shuts down. In recovery mode, Disk Utility says the hard disk cannot be repaired.
    But when I try to re-install Mavericks from the Recovery Partition, it only shows the recovery partition as the destination, not the rest of the computer.
    Not sure what to do.

    Indeed, Disk Utility can't even erase and reformat the drive. It's toast.
    This is very disappointing. Second Mac Mini I've had go out this year. First seems to be a logic board issue. Now the hard drive on the newer machine.
    At least I was able to use Disk Drill to get photos and other important files off the Mini. I had a Time Capsule, but last year, it too died (just a few months out of warranty).
    One further question, if you don't mind. If I'm just going to replace the HD on the mini, I'm not sure why one would do this step that you suggested: "get a new HD, put it in an enclosure or use another method that allows the HD to be connect to the Min. Then boot to the recovery partition and install Mavericks on the new HD."
    Also, maybe I can replace the drive on the mini myself. Maybe get an SSD for it? They seem more reliable.

    Th downloads do not finish. I am dowloading to a file on my desktop called MUSIC, but it first starts to download to my desktop and then I move it to the MUSIC file also on my desktop and I have been doing this without incident using 10.7.2 as well as 10.7.1 and 10.7.

  • HT201250 I have a brother who is paranoid. He is starting to use an external hard drive to back up his information on his Mac. He says he is afraid that this might erase information from his computer hard drive. What can I tell him to allay his fears?

    Making a backup will NOT affect the original data.
    In fact failure to backup his data is more likely to result in data lost sometime in the future.
    Disk drives are mechanical devices, and subject to failure.
    If he is really paranoid, then he should be using the 3-2-1 backup method.
    3 copies of his data including the original
    2 different backup formats as one format is a single point of failure.
    1 copy should be off-site.
    If he uses an on-line networking backup solution such as CrashPlan, Mozy, Carbonite, Arq, etc... that would satisfy both off-site as well as using a 2nd backup format from Time Machine.  The off-site protects him from theft and natural disaster.  If not going to use an on-line networked backup, then consider using a cloning utility such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to an external disk and then take the disk to a family member, friends, or work.  Several disks for cloning means you can cycle through the disks always keeping at least one off-site at all times.
    Also a backup is protection against his own mistakes in accidentially deleting or modifying a file he really needs.
    If he is really paranoid, he should be backing up Big-Time, not thinking of reasons to avoid backup.  That is just asking for trouble.

    Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
    Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
    Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
    The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
    However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
    If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
    There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod to iTunes.

  • HT4587 em.  Now they say an error has occured.  The network has timed out.  I have rebuilt it and reconfigured the units, done hard resets.  What can I do now?

    My 2 airport express units have worked until now.  I only play Itunes on them and have reconfigured them, done hard resets on the expresses and the extreme, built new networks and started all over.  when I can finally see them in airport utility and make sure they are connected to my network I still can't play them in itunes.  I can select them, but the error message is that the network connection timed out.  Used to work just fine.  Its gotta be a setting, but I can't figure it out.  I tried to change the channels, but it isn't very intuitive.  Airport Extreme is channel 11, one of the Airport Express' is channel 1, and the other is 50 something.  (I can't pull it up in airport utility, even though it shows green light and appears on my ipad. 

    Disable your firewall/security software, then try again.

    I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.
    I've tried MIGRANT ASSISTANCE as well, it kept on LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPUTERS even though I clicked on TIME MACHINE BACK UP USING EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
    so what to do now?
    P.S. Guys at MacStore were so careless to even listen to me when I asked them about retrieving back up :(

    Connect the HDD to your MBP.  Open Disk Utility>Erase and drag the HDD icon inrt the Name field.  The format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click on the Erase button.
    Then try the clone process again.  You may use Disk Utility>Restore or a third party cloning application such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.

    Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
    The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
    Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

    I transferred the data from my old 2006 MacBook Pro 17".  Thanks for the help on that.  I thought that I was doing it right.  Used a backup hard drive and time machine.  Problem:  Now my new macbook air thinks it is the old machine and that the remote disc is the mb air.  Clicks want to take things to mobile me instead of iCloud, old applications launch instead of the new ones.  How do I fix the mess I have made?  Like I said before,  I am a software user and don't really know what I am doing when I start into the guts of the software, but I am able to learn.  Thanks for any help.

    After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.
