Hard Drive failed - repair, warranty ?s

I booted from OS X disk (error message) and the disk would not mount for repair/verification. I booted fromthe iMac G5 Hardware Test and "passed " the Quick Test but failed the Extended Test. My copy of Disk Warrior (not the newest version, but the revision for my iMac G5) either won't list the drive or just goes to restart because it can't find it.
I have a first generation iMac G5 (Dec. 04) that has had power issues 3 times, so I have been under the Extended coverage , and jsut noticed it was estended for 3yrs.
Due to this, I am reluctant to just change out the drive without taking it to the Apple store first, because I now have an extra year on the power/video warranty.
If I try the updated Disk Warrior or Tech Tool, will I either be able to repair this disk or save some data if everything now is pointing to it not even being mounted or readable?
I read elsewhere in the Forum about getting a firewire case and after replacing the drive, hooking up the old drive and trying to recover data. What is the chance of that working if I presently am not able to read or mount the disk?
And are there any suggestions about how I should proceed given the warranty extension.

Dean, I don't think that changing your drive will affect the extended warranty. If you have tried DW and TTP, and they are the versions meant for your model, using a newer version will probably not help.
Replacing the drive and then putting it in a new case might work, but what exactly was the error you got from Hardware Test?

  • My hard drive failed, I'm still under warranty, but they won't send me a replacement

They say it's company policy.  Apparently, they don't think I'm capable of doing it myself.  If I want them to honor my warranty, I'm going to have to send my entire laptop to them so a trained professional can perform this delicate procedure.
    I'd rather not do this.
There's an indeterminate waiting period, a risk of damage during shipping and, if my prior experience with these kinds of operations is anything to go by, a risk of damage during the actual repair itself.  Plus, my warranty is up in a month, so if something does go wrong, I'm left holding the bag.
The reallocated sector count's below its threshold.  The drive's done.  It takes about 5 minutes for anyone to see this.
I've got a friend who worked at Geek Squad.  He mentioned I could bring it to them and they'll help me out even though I didn't buy the computer at Best Buy.  Something about having programs with manufacturers set up, or something.  But the nearest Best Buy is almost an hour away, and his explanation didn't make enough sense to me for me to risk an evening.
Anyone have any suggestions for how I can get my hard drive replaced at minimal cost to me and risk to my laptop?

I've had Dell, HP, Gateway, IBM, Compaq, Lenova, and other computer manufacturer's send replacement drives to users as warranty replacements.  They normally take your credit card number so they can charge you if you don't return the defective part by a certain date.  I can't understand why Toshiba is so **bleep** about this.  I don't blame you for not wanting to send in your laptop to have the hard drive replaced under warranty.  Just get a Western Digital Scorpio Blue from Newegg, ZipZoomFly, or some other reputable online reseller and replace it yourself.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • When I bought my computer I also bought Works hard drive failed had Apple repair it but no Works what can I do?

When I originally bought my iMac I also bought Works, then my hard drive failed and I had apple replace it but when I got my computer back no Works what are my oppitions or am I SOL?

Where did you purchase iWorks from?  If it was on a disk use the disk to reisntall iWorks.  If you purchased it from the App Store you should be able to log into the App Store with the same Apple ID that you used to purchase the iMac and original iWorks and download it again but for free.
If you have any problem downloading contact the App Store Support personnel via this link at the App Store:

  • Hard Drive Failed Need Help!

Hey guys, heres my story. My hard drive failed last week (wouldnt go past white screen), took it to genius bar, they ran Disk Warrior and it seemed to fix it. As a precautionary measure I bought a 1tb external drive and backep up my system via time machine. Today my imac froze and I am having the same problem, wont boot past white screen. I am 2 months out of my warranty and need to know what is the easiest fastest and cheapest fix since I am a college student. Also are any of these options possible?
    1) Install OS X as a clean system and use my external HD to load my system.
    2) Buy another external HD and boot up from that?
    3) Buy another internal HD and have someone install it (not sure how much this would cost though)
If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.

All 3 of those are possible however #1 and 2 are not favorable. I would suggest to first run a few tests to make sure that your hard drive is actually bad.
    1) The first test like Larry suggested is to boot up to your Mac OS install disk, but do not go through the installation process. Instead go to the Utilities Menu at the top and open Disk Utility. If your drive does not show up in the left hand column then the drive is likely bad.
    2) Insert the original iMac install disk like in step 1 but this time when you startup hold down the "d" key. This will load up the Apple Hardware Test. Run the Extended test. If it passes everything then this means your computer is ok just the hard drive is bad.
    3) However if in step 1 Disk Utility does see the hard drive first try Repairing the Disk. If this fails you might try reformatting the drive and reinstalling Mac OS X as the problem could be an issue with the system software.
    4) Which should actually be step 1 is to disconnect all of your external devices like hard drives and see if you still cannot boot. Keep everything disconnected during testing.
The problem is hard drive failures can be intermittent. One minute it works the next minute it doesn't even see a hard drive. Good luck though and let us know how it goes.

  • Brand new hard drive failed - is it me?!

Hello (Kate HS's other half here)
I recently had to replace the HD on our iMac (the original one failed more or less on it's second birthday)
I fitted a 250gb Hitachi drive about a month ago, restored data from backups and everything seemed great, until tonight...
I was watching TV via Eye TV when the computer froze - and when i forced shut down and restarted I was greeted by a blinking question mark. Booted from Disk First Aid and it couldn't see the HD. Hardware test shows " 2STF/1/4 " error.
Could it be that something other than HD could be causing this - or some other fault is destroying hard drives? (first time i had warning noises and regular crashes for a few days, this time there was nothing - instant death)
Could I have done something wrong when fitting it?
Or what are the odds of having 2 hard drives fail in the space of a month..?
    Hope you can help.
    iMac G5 20" 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    To Apple Discussions!
Since your HD is only a month old it should still be under warranty. I would contact the manufacturer and/or get a new one.
In case it's not the HD, see your computer comes under the following program since you have an 20" G5 iMac. Hopefully, it's a Rev B:
The 20-inch iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Power Supply Issues (Rev B)

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

  • My hard drive failed and I can't afford the professional data recovery.  Do I have any other options?

I have a 13" Early 2011 Macbook Pro.  Last week the hard drive failed (for the second time), and when I took it to the Apple Store I was told it would cost $177 to replace the hard drive and the cables.  I intend on going through with this and getting it fixed, however the man I talked to said I should hold on to it a little longer before giving it to them for repair in case I want to recover my data.  When I researched how to recover the data, my answers mostly consisted of taking it to a professional to do so.  I found a local authorized service provider who said they could do so, however I was told it would cost at least $400 to recover my data (possibly more depending on how much data there is to recover).
I can afford to pay $177 to fix the hard drive.  I cannot, however, afford to pay an additional $400+ to get all of my data back.  Yes I realize I should have backed my files up onto an external hard drive (I'm not the most computer-savvy person), but honestly, all I really need is my photos.  When my hard drive was in the process of failing, I got a flash drive and put a lot of my files onto it so I would at least have some of them when I got my Macbook fixed.  At this point, I can't even turn it on, so I am not able to go into iPhoto and get my pictures.
Is there any way I can do this myself?  There is no way I can get this done professionally.  I would love to be able to all of my data and files back, but if I can just get some that is better than nothing.  Any help would be appreciated!

I did navigate back several days prior to my Mac dying. Still nothing.
Sounds like it may have been excluded, or perhaps damaged.
Just for future reference, it's always a good idea to keep "secondary" backups.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.

  • Hard Drive Failed, New one Installed, Problems of course

Hellooo Everyone This is sort of a last ditch effort to see if I can fix this myself or if I am going to have to shell out 500 dollars to get my laptop back in working order. So I have a HP dv6-6140 laptop. A few weeks ago the hard drive failed and I purchased and installed a new one, ran windows 7 and have it on my laptop. When I try to hook up an ethernet cable to download and install the drivers for the laptop the ethernet cable is not recognized it says no internet connection blah blah blah. Ok so I downloaded the drivers to a flash drive and installed some of them onto my laptop, no changes.  So I was thinking of purchasing the recovery discs which im assuming include the drivers for the notebook for 35 dollars which is paltry in comparison to what I would pay if I took it to a computer repair shop, but how do I know that would work? I dont. I am looking for ideas or anything that I may be missing. I am not computer illiterate but I am not an expert. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
    Kelly

    Hi, Kelly:
On your model normally it is very important to install the chipset driver first and reboot before attempting to install the ethernet (wired network) driver.
The chipset drivers install some motherboard driver which I think enables the communication to the ethernet adapter.
The problem is, HP does not include the necessary chipset drivers for your model (which I assume is a HP Pavilion dv6-6140us Entertainment Notebook PC).
So...Download and install the AMD Chipset Drivers and reboot.  You want the first driver listed on the webpage.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
Then see if the ethernet adapter works again or reinstall the ethernet driver after you reboot the PC.
The parts list indicates your model comes with a Broadcom wireless/bluetooth card.
Here are the links to the drivers you need for that...

  • Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011 hard drive fails, how to replace hard drive?

    Hi!
I have a Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011 (OS X Mountain Lion v 1.3.18 (352.4). I tried to install OS X Mavericks but it showed this error message:
"This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors. This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as soon much data as possible and replace the disk."
The laptop was still doing fine so I didn't do anything. Then it started to act funny: iPhoto stopped working, hangs when I watch video streaming, and it started to run really slow. I only use the laptop's basic features- internet, watching movies, editing using iMovies so it's really strange for me that the hard drive failed all of a sudden.
I called Apple support and a kind fellow tried to troubleshoot it, thinking it was only a software problem. In the end, he said I need to bring my macbook to the service center and have the hard drive replaced. I know it will cost a lot so I want to replace the it myself.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Can this problem really be solved by just replacing the hard drive?
    2) Can I use SSD this time so my Macbook can run faster?
    3) What SSD is recommended for my late 2011 Macbook 13"?
    4) I don't have the installation disk, can I still install the OS X Mountain Lion? How?
I am looking for other sites as well but I hope this community could share some tips too.
    Thanks a lot!

I've switched out the hard drive on my Late 2011 model several times and I've never disconnected the battery cable.
In my "Opinion" it is not necessary to do that. Not sure if it is or not recommended by Apple.
    EDIT:
I just looked at my User Manual, PDF I downloaded from Apple, and there is no mention of disconnecting the battery.
Here's a link to the manual for my model.

  • Hard Drive Fail after install Photoshop CS6?

Hi! I downloaded Photoshop CS6 six days ago. Three days later my hard drive failed... and now can not find the installation. The repair put my system back to a previous time when the computer worked fine. Did this erase the install???
    Thanks,
    CeCe1019

What is your operating system & version?
If Windows, how was the system reset - by System Restore?  Or a complete restore from backup?
While a System Restore will leave the installed programs in your Program Files, all registry data and system files will have disappeared.  So either way you will have to reinstall.

  • Macbook hard drive fail....I think?

I have a Macbook that when booted just displayed a folder icon. Thru searching I believed the hard drive failed.
80gb drive fails "verify disk" so I ran "repair disk". It says it repairs but always fails again on verify.
So I purchased a new hard drive (500 gb) Installed it and when I tried to partion it it appears as a 3.6 TB drive??????  So I returned the drive and got another only to have the same issue?
Is it the drive? Some other part? Please help?
    Thanks!

What is it you need - Windows installer disc or something else?  Your question is unclear.  Could you be more specific?

Well, here is a place to download your own install disks (there is some work in making them but):

If that isn't your operating system just look on the right and click on it.

  • Does MBA Hard Drive have longer warranty?  Smart Status says drive is poop.

I know the Apple systems come with a 1 year warranty but I seem to remember in the past, many hard drive manufacturers actually warranty the hard drives longer than that. Of course label to remove them is not covered but curious, is the hard drive found in the original Rev A MacBook Air have a longer warranty from that manufacturer? If yes, who makes them, and who can one send them to for replacement. I would guess there are date codes found on them and if that is the case, I would think sending the drive to them, and a date code less than what there warranty is, one can get a replacement???
My MBA is still running but Disk Utility tells me there is a problem that can't be fixed. Recommends I back-up and take it to Apple for service. I have not tried to erase it and format it to see if that corrects issue but I take it this SMART Status is looking at something about the drive that a format will not fix.
I want to get ready to replace the drive if that happens. I have owned this MBair for 1 year 8 months so out of warranty from Apple but if the drive has longer warranty, I will take it out myself and get a replacement.
Or, is the drive only covered by Apple ONLY for 1st year and that is that?

    Hi,
I read we have never been to the moon... but I just don't believe it.
Hard disks have moving parts and are - while we can already fly to the moon - still not error resistant. You may experience hard disk failures usually within the first 24 hours, or never. Long believed. Google used its data from data centers (where the search engine lives) and saw that neither smart nor any other mechanism will be able to tell when a drive fails. I am using hard drives that run now for 9 years in daily use, without problems... of course it is sad if it fails after 1,5 years... but you can get it replaced easily. A common problem it is not. Go to the Apple dealer of your choice, bring your invoice and maybe you leave happy again. sometimes it works, sometimes not, better then whining here at least.
