Hard Drive failed trying to restore music
Lost power and hard drive. I had a new hard drive installed and am now trying to reinstall everything!!! All my music was on my hard drive. I did back up my hard drive some time ago, but can I put the music from my ipod onto the new hard drive?
When I hook the FireWire up, should something automatically pop up on the iBook, showing me that it recognizes the MacBook is now connected?
The drive in the MacBook would mount like any other hard drive.
Is it still a possibility that it's the data cable, or is that pretty unlikely?
Given that Disk Utility in the installer disk won't see the drive, I think it most likely that the drive has failed, in which case Data Rescue will not be able to recover anything (it won't work if the drive won't even mount). Probably the only way you're going to be able to recover any files would be by sending the drive to a data recovery service, and those are very expensive.
You can try removing the drive and putting it in an external case or using a drive adapter like the NewerTech unit (whatever's least expensive). That would verify that the problem is the drive and not with the drive circuitry on the MacBook. If you have an Apple Store near you, often they can perform such a test at the Genius Bar which would save you from having to buy a case/adapter yourself.

I have an iPod Video, 80 gigabyte.
A while back, I had a hard drive fail which was storing all my music to sync to the iPod. Now, I have the music on the iPod, but need to get it back into iTunes, without iTunes deleting the music upon sync.
Is there a way to do this?

PaulConnect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay. -
Hard Drive failed - Trying to Use Data Rescue II
I am trying to recover some photos and videos of my first child's first 20 months alive. My MacBook crashed while I was checking my gmail one night. I have a friend's iBook G4 connected to my MacBook via FireWire right now and am trying to use Data Rescue II to possibly recover my photos and videos. I can live without everything else. When I use the install disc to boot up my MacBook, all the iBook is seeing is the install disc, not the hard drive. Why? and what am I doing wrong? Why can't I see/scan the hard drive, too? Do I have other options?

About a year ago, my Powerbook G4 suffered a hard drive failure, and every bit of information was lost in no-man's land because I did not have anything backed up (trust me, I've learned my lesson). I was referred to DriveSavers, and after charging me a small fortune, they said that they had been successful in recovering 100% of my hard drive and sent it all back to me on 6 DVD discs. I got an iMac and a MacBook Pro to start over, and I have had some success in finding individual items on the DVD discs, like Appleworks and Photoshop documents, and uploading them to the iMac. However, I have never been able to actually "re-create" my old hard drive and access everything that was there before the crash. There are things like the Address Book, iCal and my notes on important meetings, and the Dashboard (which was full of important sticky notes) that I cannot figure out how to retrieve from the DVDs. I have deliberately left the MacBook Pro untouched & unused in the hopes that I can use it to reincarnate my old Powerbook using the 6 DVDs from DriveSavers. The MacBook Pro is currently a blank slate, and I'd like to know if there any way that I can use the DVDs from DriveSavers to make the MacBook Pro a carbon copy of the old Powerbook, with the same files and hard drive, etc.? Is this even possible? In the past I was referred to the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941#2c about a manual backup and restore. I tried it, but it was unsuccessful. I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive. Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box. DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key. That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives. Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive. -

I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error... Help!!
If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup. -

IMovie -Problem restoring events after external hard drive failed.
iMovie 09 – The external hard drive failed where I stored my 2012 events. I do not have a backup copy of these events. I bought a new external drive and named it exactly the same as the old drive. Then I uploaded archived original video clips to it recreating the events. I used the exact same event names. However when I view the projects I made from the original events, I get “this clip’s media file is not currently available”. The file path I created should be the same as the old, so why does the project not recognize the recreated events? Any suggestions what I could try?
If I were able to retrieve and copy the old events from the failed drive to the new drive, would that work?

I've been concerned about a potential situation arising where I may need to restore Events from a backup drive. However, your situation is somewhat different in that you've had to re-import the Events to a new drive from an archive.
My main video drive is a Maxtor One Touch III Turbo comprising two 500GB drives set up as a RAID 0. So, effectively it appears as one drive totalling 1TB, with data being written to both drives simultaneously (but not mirrored). However, if one drive fails, the other becomes ineffective as it contains only partial data about imported clips (the remaining data being on the failed drive).
I backup the Maxtor to a portable 1TB drive by cloning it using SuperDuper. My thinking has been that, if the Maxtor fails then a simple rename of the backup drive to the same name as the Maxtor is all that will be required for iMovie to retain the linkages between Events and Projects. I hope this is the case!

You can't fix it. iTunes bought content is DRM protected. so it can only be played on authorized devices. i.e devices associated with the apple Id used to purchase the content. Its copyright protection that the rights owners demand.
Circumventing it, is illegal in most countries, and as such cannot be discussed here. If you want to play the content you'll need to connect your computer directly to your TV, or use some other device you can authorize for iTunes content such as an iPad, iPhone , iPod touch or Apple Tv. -
My hard drive failed. My applications were on the drive including Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Apple told me I could pull everything from the failed drive. I tried that but the drive is bad so I can't get to anything. The Office package was installed/included when I purchased the Mac. Does anyone think Apple will provide me with the Office package? Thank you everyone. I apologize to confusing all but I am up to date and running OS X 10.8.2. It's possible I purchased the key for Office but I don't think so although it was 3-4 years ago. I guess I will stop in the Apple Store and just ask. I may just buy the new bundle anyway to get the most updated.

ITunes worked fine on my Windows 7 machine. Had to rebuild the machine but all the data remains. Downloaded a new version of iTunes and cannot figure out how to load all of my music currently on my hard drive. Tried moving "iTunes Library" file. Did not work. Never had trouble like this before.
