Hard drive failed - what can apple do for me now?

Is it work going to an Apple store for help with a macbook pro with no hard drive? It's a 2010.

Can you not just purchase one and put it in and reload the OS? There are plenty of tutorials online if you're not confident at present.

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

  • Hi, never used support before - here goes! My Mac G4 MDD no longer shows the start up hard drive icon. The one with all my files on! It shows the other 3 hard drive icons and boots up OK. Has my start up hard drive failed? Can it be fixed? Thanks.

My Mac G4 MDD no longer shows the start up hard drive icon. The one with all my files on!
It shows the other 3 hard drive icons and boots up OK.
Has my start up hard drive failed? Can it be fixed?

Doesn't sound like any hard drive failure to me - more a Finder preference.
Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> Hard disks
The startup disk is sometimes treated differently from other disks (such as external and network disks) and I'm guessing this is a simple preference setting, although I might be wrong.

  • What is the best priced External Hard Drive, that I can reboot from, for the MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro with 10.9.4. I am looking for a 3T External Hard Drive that I can boot from if my system goes south, that I can afford. Any recommendations?
    Mike

Don't know the best priced, but the external drives I like best are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro quad-interface drives.  I have four of the 2 TB drives for my MacBook Pro and iMac and they are terrific.  OWC is a Mac specialist supplier with the best guarantees and service you will find.

  • Hard drive failed, how can I reinstall Windows 7?

The hard drive failed on my dad's laptop.  Replacing it isn't a problem, but I'm not sure how to get Windows 7 back onto it.  His laptop came with it installed already and he doesn't have any backup discs.  Will HP send discs so that I can reinstall the OS?  I'd rather not have to buy a new OS.

  • Since installing 10.7.3 my downloads say that I do not have enough space on my computer for the download. These downloads are never more that 200 megs or so and I have 270 Gigs left on my hard drive. What can I do to fix this?

Since installing 10.7.3 my downloads say that I do not have enough space on my computer for the download. These downloads are never more that 200 megs or so and I have 270 gigs left on my hard drive. Somehow the remaining space on my hard drive is not being correctly read. What can I do to fix this? I have run permissions repair several times, but to no avail.

Th downloads do not finish. I am dowloading to a file on my desktop called MUSIC, but it first starts to download to my desktop and then I move it to the MUSIC file also on my desktop and I have been doing this without incident using 10.7.2 as well as 10.7.1 and 10.7.

  • My hard drive failed, lost all my software for CS6. How can I get it back?

Last year I purchsed CS6 in the form of CDs from the University of California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo.
I installed them on my MacBook Pro.
I transferred colleges to the University of Wisconsin Stout.
Last week my hard drive corrupted and I lost all my Creative Suite software.
I doubt that I have my product code or CDs anymore (just lost in the travel).
Is there a way I that I can be given a download from Adobe to get my software back?
I've already paid for it once, and even with my student discount it was not cheap!
    Thanks.

  • My hard drive failed and can't recover. What are my options?

I have an HP 2000 notebook. The arm inside the drive got stuck and made a beeping noise. I was able to open the drive and fix the arm, but now the OS does not boot up and the HD can't be repaired. I don't see any product key for windows 8 anywhere on the laptop, so when I get my new hard drive how do I re-install windows?

The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your computer, inside the battery compartment or on the startup BIOS screen. Please see How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? for more assistance locating this information. DO NOT include your serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
The Windows 8 key is a DPK (digital product key). This means that it is encrypted and embedded in the BIOS/CMOS. Please use the HP Recovery Media you created when you first setup your computer, to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create this media, please contact official HP Customer Support in your region / country, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP Recovery Media is available for your computer. Alternatively, you can try this Windows 8 OEM download; http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&sqi=2...
This is an unofficial "official licensed copy of Windows 8 OEM." Download this file (you may have to try several time or repeatedly to successfully download this file) and burn the ISO image to a DVD. Set the BIOS to use UEFI, enable "Secure Boot" and disable "Legacy Support... if these options are present. Boot from this disk and install Windows 8. It should register as an official copy and use the key embedded in the BIOS. Please note that no HP customizations nor HP value-added will be installed using this method.

  • Hard drive failing, what files besides photos/music/etc should I back up before replacing the drive?

I bought my MacBook 5,2 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM in 2009, never had any problems with it until now. For a few months now, my macbook will freeze up (usually if I'm doing a lot such as posting a youtube video on facebook, or running a game, etc) and make a clicking sound, to which I can't do anything except hard restart it. It only did it once in a while until now it's happening more frequently at very annoying times. I never thought to look it up because I'm an idiot but now that I did I learned that my hard drive is imminently going to fail. I know I dropped it once, from my bed to hardwood, with no immediate damage but I'm sure that could've done something, other than that I take very good care of it.
So I'm in the process of backing up my stuff, which I figure isn't a lot so I'm probably going to use a USB drive & CDs..but my question is: Is there anything important that I need to back up besides my files (pictures, music, documents)? Like any program files etc? And when I do replace the hard drive, which I may do myself following DIY on here, what will remain on my computer? Will my applications all be there? I've only downloaded a few programs that could be redownloaded anyways (frostwire, tinyumbrella, etc) and my Pages/office are on disk. Sorry if these questions are stupid, this is my first personal computer and I've honestly never had to back anything up before/replace hard drives. I appreciate any help to any of these questions and I can further detail anything needed

It boots up to where its just my background and the Finder bar but then crashes, so I can't click anything. Anything from here or am I just screwed?
There are a few remaining options.
If you have another Mac with a FireWire port, try FireWire Target Disk Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
You need a FireWire cable to connect the two Macs. This will allow you to mount your failing HD on a working Mac and copy files that way.
Try Safe Mode - read about it first:
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components.
    Starting up in Safe Mode
This assumes the Finder is crashing due to a third party system extension or optional system component that Safe Mode will prevent from loading. You should still be able to copy files directly to an external device, but file sharing will be disabled.
Lastly boot from the DVD again, repair the disk again, reinstall OS X, and keep your fingers crossed. You're squeezing the last drops of life from the thing.

  • Hard Drive Error, What can I do now?

I downloaded the new iTunes 7 and it gets up to 53% done for the installation? Any ideas as to why? Possible hard drive issue?
I ran the Disk Utility from the OS X install CD. This photo shows the results. What are my options now? This drive was actually replaced last year towards the end of the Apple Care plan and of course the 90 day warranty on the replacement is up.

Well, I would have recommended trying an Archive and Install first, since you had the room on the hard drive to do it. DiskWarrior is a good utility to have on hand. It can often find and repair the hard drive when Apple's own Disk Utility fails to repair it.
Did you repair permissions before downloading iTunes? If not, that may have caused the problem. It's recommended to repair permissions before and after installing new software. Also, it's always recommended to have a current backup when downloading and installing new software in case some glitch occurs. Installing new software without having a backup is kind of like walking a tightrope without a safety net. Riskier.
As far as abandoning the Mac platform, I could never do it. When Apple went from OS 9 to OS X, I thought, "Well, as long as I'm going to have to learn a whole new OS, maybe I'll try Windows," so I tried Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. Ick. That didn't last long.
If you've been reading mostly about the bad things happening to Macs, then maybe you've been looking in the wrong places.

  • IMac hard drive fail - what steps to prevent in future?

I am working on an extensive video editing project on FCP7 on a 2011 iMac with 3.4GHz i7 and 8GB RAM running OSX Lion 10.7.5. I am editing very large pro res video files for a feature-length documentary. All media is stored on external hard drives.
Several times before, my iMac would freeze and not reboot. All times before, resetting the PRAM seemed to solve the problem.
Today, while exporting a 30min sequence, the spinning beachball got stuck. I noticed that Time Machine was running at the time, and I attempted to stop Time Machine in Preferences (it was not yet in process of transferring data--I tried stopping time machine before in a similar manner, and it seemed to speed up my computer). Now the entire computer froze. I manually turned off, and tried to reboot. This time, after holding down Command (⌘), Option, P, and R, nothing happened. I turned off and tried again, and this time the new computer setup screen appeared, and I am attempting to restore from time machine.
How do I know why my iMac HD failed this time, and how do I move forward from here?
Is my iMac HD compromised, or is it some type of software/OS problem?
How do I prevent future crashes/fails?
Should not run any other programs while editing in FCP7? Should I not run Time Machine while editing?
Thank you in advance, and please pray for my time machine full recovery

First, EVERY hard drive will fail.  It's just a question of when.  There's not much you can do to prevent the physical failure of the drive that I know of, besides making sure the computer runs as cool as possible.  IMac's tend to run hot and that's probably gonna have some effect on the life expectancy of the drive.
As far as the problems that can happen which are not related to the physical failure of the drive.
Make sure you keep at least 20% free on your startup drive.
As Mark said, having a bootable clone is a really good idea.  Here's a user tip all about cloning your startup drive.

I highly recommend Disk Warrior. It's saved my life a few times.

  • MY Hard Drive says_"YOU CAN READ ONLY" for the OWNERSHIP AND PERMISSSIONS!

I cannot add anything to my EXTERNAL (SimpleDrivePS) hard drive. When I try to copy something to it, it says "The item cannot be moved because SimpleDrivePS cannot be modified."
Upon control-clicking this external hard drive's icon, under "Get info" it says "You can read only" for it's "Ownership and Permissions."
I have used this hard drive with Windows-based computers, but not with this new Apple yet.
What do I need to do so that I can move or copy things to this external hard drive?
Also, is there a discussion room for just general questions? - There are many little things that I wonder how to do from time to time as I am trying to become accustomed with Apple, like shortcut key for desktop, or where is control panel or link to "my computer" or other shortcut keys - things like that.

    Hi newsppler;
Since I have never had a disk that was formatted NTFS, I am not absolutely sure exactly how you can discover how it is formatted. I think if you look at the disk with Disk Utility that should tell you.
Yes. If you reformat you will lose everything that is currently on that disk.
To reformat open Disk Utility and then select the disk. You then click the partition tab. This will allow you to select what format you wish to use. I would suggest Mac OS Extended +

  • How do I reformat my Seagate Expansion external hard drive so I can use it for Mac

I recently purchased a 3TB Seagate® Expansion® external hard drive for PC. My plan is too reformat it so that I can use it, but it has been acting wierd on me. It says on Disk Utility that it is 4 gbs but I have a 3TB one. Im on OSX mavericks by the way. Thanks!

    akostainsek,
the diskutil output shows that the disk has no Apple-recognized partitioning. Try the following commands in Terminal to establish the partitioning, and to see if it takes effect:
    diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ Seagate disk1
    diskutil list
Again, please include in your reply the full output from these commands.
