Hard Drive Failure After Leopard Install Attempt

Ok - so here's what up...
Got a MacBook. Got Leopard. Tried to install. It froze. Log said there was some error, didn't think much of it and so I just chose the restart option.
When I came back to the choose a startup disk option during the installation... My Internal HD was gone.
1. Yes, I had foolishly left a USB drive attached. My bad.
2. God I wish I had checked that error more closely so I knew what to tell you folks now that I am asking for help.
Anyone got a clue here? I have tried all the reset PMU, PRAM, Disk Utility - nothing is showing me this HD.

Hi
You should be able to access Disk Utility from a menu at the start of the Leopard installation process, before or when you're asked to select a destination volume for the OS install.
If the drive doesn't show in Disk Utility, it may indicate a hardware failure. Hard drives can and do fail, and I guess a fairly disk intensive activity such as an OS install is as 'good' a time as any.
Hopefully it won't come down to this though as you'd probably have to replace the hard drive, under warranty if applicable.

  • Hard Drives locked after Leopard Install

Since this only happened after I installed Leopard, I figured here would be a good place. My apologies if it is not.
The root ( /Volumes/Entreri/ and /Volumes/Akira ) are now read only. All folders and files within them have correct permissions.
History: For a long time now, I've promised myself that one day, I was going to wipe my main drive, Ishii, and do OSX RIGHT. Ever since I had initial permissions problems since I upgraded my systems from OS9 to OSX, I ran my system (a Dual 1 Ghz Quicksilver G4) as root. Cringe away. I was young, and my attitude was that my dang computer was not going to tell me what I could, and could not delete (and trust me, after the initial switch and for years beyond, OSX still gave me plenty of those problems).
But I grew older and knew it was time to just run as an admin user, and not root. When Leopard was released, I figured it would be time to wipe my system HD (Ishii) totally clean, install OSX 10.5 and run as a normal user "sean."
Install goes fine. The finder pops up and I start to make what I assume are my first mistakes of my new life as an admin user. I get info on Entreri and Akira, and see their permissions are set to rwrwr-. **** no I say. The Everyone group (for some reason...) needs to have write access!! I change the permissions to rwrwrw and "apply to all enclosed items." It works! "Awesome," I thought, "all my permissions problems have been fixed!" I do that to both my Aux drives.
Then I get info on the system drive, Ryoko, and see the same thing... and I change it, and I hit apply to all enclosed items. About 30 seconds after a little voice in my head nags: "Why would you need to do that? The drive was wiped fresh- every file in there has the permissions OSX set for it.."
But it was in process- and I've learned not to interrupt OSX doing file changes.
As I'm sure you can guess, OSX starts behaving strangely after that. I restart off the Leopard disk, and use the disk utility to Repair Disk Permissions. Due to the number of files I idiotically changed, that takes 4 hours.
Now OSX runs fine.. but my Aux drives, Entreri and Akira, have their root directories locked.
•Getting info on the hard drive makes it look like everything's fine.
•Changing the permissions from rwrwrw to rwrwrw just to try and do something doesn't do anything.
•Applying to enclosed items run, but the root directory is still locked.
•Ignoring ownership on the volume doesn't change the locked root folder.
•FileXaminer can't seem to do anything either.
•Attempting to change the permissions in the terminal results in a Operation not permitted error.
    •Permissions as reported from terminal: drwxrwxrwx@ 25 root admin 918 Dec 8 14:15 Entreri
•I ran as root, to see if I could fix the problem, but it's the same thing all over.
•When booting from leopard and running disk utility, the hard drive's are still appearing as locked- nothing is wrong with the drives. I was thinking about reinstalling, but if the installer disk sees the drives as locked, I doubted that would make an issue.
Entreri: 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9
Akira: 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.6 (4 years old or so)
Ryoko: 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.6
Any help would be appreciated. I fully know I screwed up.

Same here, I have 3 extra internal drives and they now show a lock graphic on the desktop icons. If I try and write any files to the drives I get a prompt stating the drive cannot be modified. I'm given an option to Authenticate with my password, but I then get a message that says I don't have sufficient access privileges. I just updated through Software Update but didn't pay attention to what was being patched. I'm guessing a security update screwed this up. I really need my drives because I use them for media production and I have a serious deadline...come on Apple, test things out before sending updates!

  • Hard drive failures after 10.6 installation, 2 library folders appear.

I have had to erase my intel imac hard drive 3 times and reinstall 10.6.
Each time the computer slowed to a standstill after a day or so, while using safari or mail.
It could not be repaired with disk utility.
After reinstalling 10.6 I have then retrieved the data from time machine. In all cases I had to update to OS 10.6.1 in order get my printer going (with the updated driver).
The odd thing is that when checking the hard drive trying to find out what is causing the problem
    I noticed that it had
one library folder in the system folder
and another library folder outside the system folder
    on the internal hard drive.
Is this the reason for the hard drive failures?
What should I do with this?? How could this have happened?
Please help! I've been using only Mac since 1986 more or less without any trouble,
but now I am having the kind of problems with SL that I thought only Windows users had!

    HI,
"*It could not be repaired with disk utility.*"
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
*If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.*
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. *Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space.*
There should be a Library folder in the System Folder.

  • Hard Drive Failure after Power Cut...

Hi guys, i have a strange one, that i cannot find an answer too anywhere.
I Went abroad in February, on a snowboarding trip, leaving my iMac on indoors and streaming all my music vis WiFi to my iPad, iPhone and MacBook Pro.
After 4 weeks we had a power supply failure in my area, causing the machine to shut down and restart, this is not normally a problem, as i have surge protection, on the iMac and all connected Hard Drives.
The iMac is 14 months old, and i have never had any issues at all, then when i get back, i find a GREY SCREEN with a folder symbol and i ? in the middle....
I disconnected the hard drives after powering the machine down, and then restarted from disc, did a clean install, up to restart, and then connected my Time Machine drive to the iMac, this worked wonderfully well, apart from alot of the 3rd party software not reinstalling correctly...
So i was happy to this point, and then after doing the new software updates, i shut down, connected the other 2 external drives and restarted.....
MAJOR FAIL, Both HD's where showing unused, or empty, not this is a problem, as i have nearly 1.5Tb of iTunes music and film on 1 of them, and disc images of all my software on the other with some extra photos....
Does anyone know why this would happen to 3 drives but not the TM and if there is anyway to recover the discs now....
I have done nothing to the drives since for fear of making it worse....

Yes all the drives are still working, and no none of the files are recoverable... I have tried as i actually have a friend with that or similar software, and i took the drives to him....
It is not the loss that concerns me, it is the fact it happened...
I will recover everything from other various drives i have laying around that became too small and just put into the cupboard, and in reality, i have only lost my music and film from the last 2 months because of this...
It is more annoying that it actually happened...

  • Mac Pro can't find hard drive with Snow Leopard installed on

    Hello there,
I have a three harddrive setup.
Harddrive 1 is in bay 1 and has two partitions.
    1: For system and apps
    2: For Documents and stuff
Hard drive 2+3 are in Bay 2+3 and are combined to a RAID 0 drive.
Some time ago I installed Leopard and the brand new an formatted hard drive.
It happened that it always took 2 start ups to run Leopard because always on the first time it didn t find the system on hard drive one. Pushing the 'D' button often helped.
Of course that was nothing to work with, although I at least could get some work done, once I loaded Leopard successfully.
So I tried Disk Utility, fsck without success.
I also tried the way of using fdisk to mark the partion as active, which only resulted in now not being able to boot at all.
Booting from DVD I also tried choosing my Leopard install on my hard drive as boot device (it has always shown up here) but still without success.
I am afraid things are quite messed up, since there were a few things happening at one time, which I am not overly happy about now. (Installing new RAM, installing SNOW LEOPARD on the new harddrive 1 in bay one, having still the RAID with LEOPARD on in bays 2+3).
I am already certain to do a fresh and complete reinstall of the system, I have my backup, but still there is some iTunes music and a few documents I haven't backed up yet, which I'd rather would not like to lose...
    Put it short:
What could I do to get my system running at least once?
    Thanks a lot,
    max.

After some research I found out about the nice TargetDiskMode which I used to save all my important data with my MacBook.

  • External Hard Drive Failures after iMac internal drive replaced

I was one of those lucky ppl who had to have my internal 1TB Seagate HDD replaced due to the recall. It was replaced on Friday.
After the drive was replaced (with another Seagate, ***?), I cloned my previous system back to the new drive (restoring from Time Machine required me to re-download Lion, which required me to re-download to a newer version of Snow Leopard, and just, Oi, vey, I used my clone).
I then had to create another bootcamp partition, and after that, I restored my previous bootcamp from an image backup with Winclone.
The next morning, my Time Machine external backup drive (a Maxtor OneTouch) makes horrible fluttering and crunching noises and cannot be found via disk utility, certainly doesn't mount to the desktop. I figure it just coincidentally failed and attached a new drive (a different OneTouch) for backup.
While Time Machine is performing an initial backup to this new drive (will take 10 hrs), I try to move a few media files to another external media drive (LaCie 1TB). I receive a couple of error -36s on a few particular files, so I figure I should wait for the Time Machine to backup and then diagnose the media drive.
The next morning (after 10 hr backup is finished), I have a stop-sign error that a disk was unmounted improperly (the LaCie media drive). The drive cannot be seen in disk utility or on a completely different MBP running Snow Leopard. It's spinning up, but it can't be read.
Only thing I can think to do is reinstall 10.8.2 over top the cloned system, make sure that the recovery partition was recreated and working.
This can't be a coinicidence, right? At this point, I'm afraid to keep my external storage drives and clone attached to the iMac, but I'm afraid to not have TM drive attached. Anyone know where to start diagnosing the problem?
    1. Could a new internal drive be the problem, hardware wise?
    2. Could the lack of an initial recovery partition or the setting up of a bootcamp partition have these sorts of consequences?
    3. Could the problem be from restoring a clone?

Well, it is a LaCie-packaged adapter, some version of that model. The hub is on the mac mini inspired line of LaCie HDs (http://www.lacie.com/company/news/news.htm?id=10269). I've had it for 6 yrs, and the hub is still going. Other drives have been running from the hub without issue for all that time (and still are). There is no hissing, and the display light indicates the hub is getting power.
You think it's time for a new hub?
The internal switchout is just a coincidence?
(Basically, I'm not a hardware expert. Does anyone know if an internal drive or internal sensor/connection problem can cause externals to fail or blowout a controller? I'm waiting on a drive dock to arrive—I'll know more whether these are HD failures or chip failures after that. Both drives showed normal-seeming power use via their display lights.)

  • How to restore iTunes library from TimeMachine external hard drive backup after clean install

I was not able to solve this problem, hence I decided to open this discussion.
    1. Recently, I clean installed Yosemite so my new Mac is completely empty.
    2. I have my time machine backup on my eternal hard drive and would like to restore only specific things - such as iTunes library.
    3. I did not manually copy iTunes library to my drive, I did the TM backup only, but I also do have all the files in my own "music" folder I manually backed-up.
However, I cannot locate the library there, where is it?
How do I move the library to my new Mac and then establish a new source folder that would be on my drive?
PS: Previously, iTunes used my own music folder as a source = it contained all the music files. I had it on an external drive, later moved it to my Mac.
This leads me to the conclusion that my backup copy of iTunes library did not contain the files anyway.
    Any advice?
    Thank you in advance.

I am confused as to what you had or have where and when.  The bottom line is, your library (for the standard user) is everything in the iTunes folder.  As far as iTunes' organization and display is concerned, your library is a file called "iTunes Library.itl" which points to all the other host of files and folders normally in the iTunes folder which all work together.
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660

Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7392 and making an iTunes library portable.
If you kept everything together in one place then you need to put the whole iTunes folder on the drive where you want it, start iTunes while holding down the option key and guide it to that .itl file.  If things were split up and you had media on the external and the rest of the library on the internal you need to get them back to exactly where they were before.  If you can't find that iTunes folder holding the critical .itl file anywhere then you have a bunch of media tracks and no organization and will need to rebuild the organization from ground level.

  • Hard drive failure after running bios update.

While attempting to update the bios on my A215 S5824 laptop, there was a small POP sound and everything went dead.  Everything seems to be working except the hard drive and screen. I was having intermittent blank screen issues, thus the bios update attempt. Any thoughts would be helpful.

  • Less hard drive space after Lion install

I have a macbook air with a 64 gig SSD, so storage space is at a premium. I seem to have about 10 gigs less space available after the Lion install. Was there files generated during the Lion install that I can delete, like a backup of the previous install, that would free up some of the lost HD space?

    SOLVED!
When I ran whatsize as an admin, the first thing I noticed was a .MobileBackups directory chewing up 74GB of space. That reminded me of something I had glanced over quickly in John Siracusa's Lion review on arstechnica.com: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.ars/18#mobile-time-ma chine
Basically if you are on a laptop, TimeMachine has a local NFS file server (the volume I saw called MobileBackups earlier) that continues to version everything while you are on the road. It appears to store that in a .MobileBackups directory on your primary HD until you plug in to TimeMachine again.
Well that's where my space went. Good to know. Thanks for the WhatSize recommendation. Time to go plug this in to TimeMachine and see it go away!

  • New hard drive and cannot re-install Windows 7

    RE:  HP Pavillion DV7-4270us
             Windows 7 64-bit
4MB Ram   640 GB Hard Drive
After receiving the S.M.A.R.T. warning about possible hard drive failure soon, I installed a Seagate 500GB hard drive. Next I began the recovery process by using my rescue discs. All that went fine.
Then the screen stated that after the pc restarts it will load all software and drivers. It will turn off and on several times and this will be normal. Please do not shut down pc.
Now is where my problem began. It never loaded the software and drivers even after running for 7.5 hours. I new this was extreme.
I just noticed on this forum someone else had a similar issue. The reply said to be aware and not to install a smaller hard drive than you originally had.
I am assuming this is my problem also. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know. I suppose I will install a 1TB hard drive, even though that is more than I will ever need.
    Thank you!

    Hi:
That could be the issue, or the recovery disks you made won't work--even on a 1 TB hard drive.
Rather than tossing money into a new HDD, if you can read the 25 character product key on the bottom of your notebook, you can make your own plain W7 x64 installation media, which will install on any size hard drive.
Here is how to do that...
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. Download the applicable version of Windows 7 that is on your product key (Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate).  The SP1 Media Refresh files are the latest ISO files.
    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/14709-Windows-7-Digital-River-direct-links-Multiple-Languag...
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Use the 25 character windows 7 product key to activate your installation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Before you try the above, see if making this CD patch works for the factory recovery disks.
