Hard Drive file format woes

I bought a LaCie portable hard drive and like the idiot I am I was so excited about freeing up space I recorded a bunch of my files onto the portable. Without Mac-formatting it! Now I have a bunch of files I can't seem to access because they were recorded on the drive with the IBM formatting. So now i have a bunch of those little dark rectangles that I can't even get to by using Parallel.
They say Unix Executable when I Info them.
Anyone know how I can convert them back.

Do you know what each of the files is, glen?
Simply adding the appropriate suffix to the file names may get you access to them. (ie ".txt" for a text file; ".doc" for a word file etc.)
If not , have a look at the thread at http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=81361 for a discussion of the usual means of "revealing" their identity etc.

How do I transfer video files from one external hard drive to another external hard drive? OS X 10.9.5. I opened up each device in a finder window and tried to drag and drop from one device to the other. No luck. Next, I R-clicked on the file and requested to copy it, then R-clicked on the Finder of the destination drive, hoping to paste but that option did not present. I am able to paste a file onto the desktop from the original location but I cannot move it from there onto the destination drive. Full disclosure: I began this operation using a Windows laptop with no difficulties. Both drives are dual formatted. The destination drive is 2 Tb and has 1.5 Tb remaining space.

You can copy them elsewhere but you will not be able to delete them as this requires writing to the drive.

EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES AND FORMATTING

I am using 10.6.4 / Intel Macbook Pro
I have to format a drive so it can be used on both PC and Mac. In the default, store bought hard drives come formatted NTFS (I believe) - I can mount the drive but not copy to it as I only have read permission.
I am well familiar with the MSDOS fat 32 format and it is worthless.
I have to use large 1tb external drives batch copying tens of thousands of multiple files. I am constantly getting errors because of characters or the names are too long even though NTFS supports it. So even though I can mount an NTFS disk and copy the files onto a FAT32 drive, that drive still rejects a lot of the files.
So my questions are:
Do you know of a format (other than fat32) that supports both Mac and PC and can handle longer naming conventions and "&-" ampersand characters?
Or - How can I adjust permissions to write to an NTFS disk without erasing all the info on the disk?
Or - is there an app so I can read/write/mount to PC disks without futzing with permissions?
If I format standard Mac HFS will PCs be able to read write? Does journal formatting affect PCs read or write? Anyone? Thanks

Windows cannot read Mac formatted drives without third-party software like MediaFour's MacDrive. Macs can read NTFS and MSDOS but cannot write NTFS. You can modify OS X to both read and write to an NTFS formatted drive. You need two pieces of freeware:
MacFUSE-2.0.3
ntfs-3g-2010.10.2-macosx
Look for them at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. You will also find one or two alternatives by searching for "ntfs."

Please try the following:
Delete the Adobe PCD folder and caps.db file:
Windows: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD
\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\caps\caps.db
Launch Acrobat and enter the serial number and check.

External Hard drive file erased whilst saving

As I saved a Jpg today, the file I was saving it to, on my external Hard drive, some how had its contents erased. How do I get it back? I'm panicking!

Hey I need to move my old hard drive files to our new computer. It is a SATA 3.5. Is it as simple as putting it in an enclosure and plugging it to new computer.
Can I do this at the start with the IMAC? I don't have the old computer, just the drive.

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

Windows 7 and iTunes doens't recognise iPod Classic 80g after wipe clean hard drive and format fat32.

My iPod Classic 80gb every now-and-then goes funny, and eventually iTunes doesn't recognise it. In the past I could put it on disk mode, and do a reset, but some times I would have to format (FAT32), uninstall and reinstall iTunes, so it would work. Now it happened again, this time wiped clean the hard drive and formatted. However windows 7 and iTunes still doesn't recognise it. Tried many tips online but nothing works. All software I have used don't see the hard drive, so can't format it again.
I can get it on disk mode but even then windows and iTunes don't recognise it. When connecting to laptop my machine goes boiling hot. Left it connected with iTunes on for few hours but still no luck.
Any suggestions?

Following your threat I realized it was time to have my hard drive changed. My iPod classic has a Samsung Model: HS081HA, 80gb/3600 rpm (real hard to get it open and check out!!!).
My question is if I DO HAVE to buy exactly the same hard drive, or I could get away with another manufacturer and model, such as Toshiba (80 GB MK8009GAH FOR iPod Video 5th 5.5th iPod Classic 6.5th 7th Gen Hard Drive - Ebay listing)?
I ask you that as these Toshiba hard drives are considerably cheaper.

Clone Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue button.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the Lion startup volume.

Help fixing some changes discovered after external hard drive files were recovered.

My external hard drive files were rescued and placed on a new one. I have 2 issues that I need to resolve. Most important, in many of the files, up to half the RAW image files were returned converted to a CR2 symbol. I can't open them or upload them. Aperture tells me that the images aren't supported. They weren't this way before the recovery. I need to be able to open and work with these files, again. I'm not sure how random files were converted during the recovery process. But, I sure need a solution, to get them to open again.
Second problem, hopefully simpler to solve. Is there a way to tell Aperture that the files connected with the previews have been relocated? It's looking for the files in a location that no longer exists. I could start all over again, and upload each album, which will take a long time. I'm hoping there is a way to avoid this.

Why is a new folder, i.e. ext. drive, Why is a new folder, i.e. ext. drive, not showing in LR5? New folder shows as "volume" below Hard Drive files. Is this new to Maverik10.10.1? What happened is finder is as I described. A pale blue Volumes folder,
grayed out which I could not open in Finder. I"ll attach the screen shot of
the LR folders here. I did put in the original post; don't know why it was

Ran the command in terminal and it did not change anything. The command WAS
in the terminal screen--- when I check now it is not. see screen shot
BTW, don't have drives C,G,H, J,L. these 'drives' have a few misc folders
in them. not sure when or how they got into the folders left frame

Partition external hard drive-what format do I use

I'm trying to partition an external hard drive by following the instructions in the disk utility help and am confused about which "format" to use. My choices are: Mac OS extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (case sensitive, journaled), Mac OS Extended (case sensitive), Unix file system and Free space.
I've looked in the forums and in the disk utility for definitions of these terms and am sorry if its there and I just don't see it.
On a different subject is there any opinion as to whether I should create a partition that should or should not be used for startup? What is the difference and which is better?

Choose Mac OS extended (Journaled) unless you have a specific reason to use another format.

Erasing Time Machine hard drive after formatting for both PPC and Intel

Ok, I made a mistake. First I formatted a Western Digital 500 gig hard drive for both my wife's PPC G4 laptop and my own Intel MBP laptop, so we could both use Leopard's Time Machine for backing up to the same drive. That wasn't my mistake though, it's been working fine. I formatted my partition using the GUID option and hers using the Apple Partition Map option (I think that's what they are called, I'm going from memory).
Here's my mistake: I needed some extra space to store some files and read that I could Re-Partition the drive without erasing anything using Disk Utility. Sounded great. I first tried to partition my wife's partition, since she had more extra space, but then I realized that was a bad idea since I had formatted her partition with using the Apple Partition Map, so I stopped and then tried to Re-Partition my side. It worked for about an hour: my Time Machine backup drive appeared, my new partition appeared, but then... her partition disappeared! Usually whenever one of us plugs in the hard drive using the firewire cable, both partitions appear, Time Machine Goes to work, and that's that. When we need to disconnect from the drive we have to eject both drives, but no big deal. Now her drive isn't appearing.
So... I tried to repair it, no good. Tried to erase both her partition and mine (to just start over): no good. I can't do anything to either of these partitions now, from either computer. Tried everything I could think of in Disk Utility, from both computers. Won't erase, won't re-partition. Not a hardware issue: it all started when I did this stupid Re-Partition. Help!!!!
I want to erase the drive and start over. Can anyone advise??

First, let's talk about the various partition schemes. A partition scheme applies to the entire drive. Specifically, these are different maps written to the drive, within which volumes are created. As such, this is an either/or thing; your drive is partitioned using either the GUID Scheme, or the Apple Scheme, not both.
"Live" partitioning or re-sizing of existing volumes is supported only under the GUID Partition Scheme. If the drive wasn't using this scheme, you would not be able to re-size as you were attempting to do. Even re-sizing under the GUID scheme requires that the drive's maps and directory structures be in very good shape, if it is to work without hitch.
Are you absolutely certain that there isn't some physical problem with the drive, or with its interface (cables and such)? If it is operating normally, you should be able to re-partition it without problems. In DIsk Utility, select the drive (not a named volume that will appear indented underneath), then click the "Partition" tab. If you wish to be able to re-size volumes later, you must choose the GUID scheme from the "Options..." dialogue sheet. Set appropriate sizes for the volumes, then click "Apply." Doing so will destroy all current volumes and data on the drive.

I want to format a new 1TB Hard drive so that it will work on both Mac and PC, I know FAT32 would work, but I need a format that will support files over 4gb (which FAT32 does not). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, whats the value in partitioning a 1TB into 2x 500GB, is this more stable, or is it a simple matter of better organization of files?

Your need to support files over 4GB and to be accessed by both Windows and OSx is the defining factor. You can format the drive in NTFS and have Windows access it directly and use [MacFuse|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/34367] with OSx to read and write to that NTFS partition. More information on MacFuse is [Here|http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/how-to-read-and-write-ntfs-windows-pa rtition-on-mac-os-x.html]. The other option is to format the drive in HFS+ and access it directly from OSx and use [MacDrive|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/13831] with Windows to read and write to that HFS partition.
MacFuse is Free while MacDrive will have to be bought for $49.95.

Its both. Think of a big text book without chapters. That would be your 1TB HD. Put some chapters/sections in it and the computer will take lesser time to access and process information. Defragmenting a HD should be easier at 500GB size than 1TB size.
