Hard Drive FireWire or USB2

Hi !
I´m about to buy an external HD ( LaCie 80/160 GB). I would like to install a bootable partition and a backup one.
Can someone point me out the Pros and Cons of Firewire vs USB2 other than speed ?
I'm using windows with bootcamp is a Fire compatible with windows on th Mini ?
Thanks!

Hello,
The main difference is speed. And it is a significant difference. USB 2.0 is significantly slower than FireWire (I know I have both, and the drives are comparable otherwise).
Otherwise, there really is no point of comparison. The USB and FireWire protocols are different. But, you can sum that up as speed and efficiency.
USB has been said to require more system resources from the host computer (thus theoretically slowing down the computer as you add more USB devices). But, it's unknown to me exactly how much that penalty really is. I haven't observed USB to slow my computer noticeably. But, I can tell you that I have personally observed a 30 to 50% performance speed hit when I transfer data to my USB 2.0 drive compared to the faster performance of my FireWire 400 drive.
Besides speed and protocol, the main difference is the connector.
USB drives are not bootable from a PowerPC Mac. But, that isn't an issue since you have an Intel Mac.
Both USB and FireWire drives are compatible with Windows and Mac OS. So, that is not a problem.
Understand that Windows cannot read or write to / from Mac OS formatted partitions.
And, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS (Windows) partitions. And, in many cases it has trouble reading them as well.
Currently, the only partition format that is universally compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows is FAT32.
But, you would only want to use FAT32 for a data partition.
FAT32 partitions cannot hold a backup copy of your Mac OS X installation, and it would not be bootable on a Mac.
FAT32 partitions also cannot hold many of the PKG files that are common in on Macs (under OS X).
So, you will want to only use a FAT32 partition to hold data that is necessary to exchange between Windows and the Mac.
Now, there is a way to create both a Mac OS X and a FAT32 partition on the same drive (you can find my method for doing it in my previous messages by searching). But, I won't delve into that because it would not be bootable on your system (and that is one of the criteria that you set).
So, your best option is to format the drive as a Mac OS X drive. Create both partitions as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and then use a program on the Windows XP installation that will enable it to mount and read / write Mac OS X drives.
One such utility is MacDrive:
http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6/
If you install MacDrive in Windows XP, then you'll be able to read and write to / from the Mac OS X partitions on your hard drive.
And, using this method, you would be able to boot from the external drive since it would still be formatted as a Mac OS volume.
So, for the criteria you provided, this would seem to be the best option.
Understand that no option you choose will permit booting from Windows on an external hard drive. So, that is why I limited discussion of booting to the Mac OS X environment. Using the Mac, you will only be able to boot from an external drive if you are booting up into Mac OS X. Windows can only be booted from the internal hard drive.
Also, be sure to change the partition / volume scheme of your external hard drive prior to partitioning it. You need to be sure to set it to the GUID scheme.
By default, the Intel Macs use Apple Partition Map for the external drives and GUID for the Internal drives. But, you will need to configure your external drive as a GUID drive if you want to be able to boot from it.
You can read more about this here:
Disk Partitions
And, you can read about how to change these schemes here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303220
I hope this helps.

No, you can't connect an external drive to the iPad - the iPad doesn't have a USB or firewire port and the camera connection kit only supports the transfer of photos and videos into the Photos app. There are some wifi-enabled drives that can be used to stream content to the iPad e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite

    Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knows of any computer hardware sellers that have hard disk enclosures for 2.5" SATA drives that has both USB2 and FireWire connections? I've looked around local stores, to no avail. So I'm expanding my search to be worldwide.
    Thanks.

    Hey Diego,
I've bought all my enclosures (5) through ebay. I find all the best option here for a good price. Here are some possibilities

  • Problem with External Hard Drive - Firewire

    I have a problem with a *300GB Venus DS3 Hard Disk* / USB 2.0 - Firewire 400 (not sure if 400).
    I have a +Mac G4 (1GHz Power PC G4 / 1GB DDR SDRAM)+ running +Mac OS 10.3.9.+
I connect Venus hard disk through USB cable and no problem. But when I want to connect it via Firewire it doesn´t appear in the desktop.
If I go to *System Profile* it says that there is a device connected to the FireWire port but i can´t see it in the desktop and if a open *Disk Utility*, there is no other hard disk besides the internal, so I can´t mount the Venus DS3 Hard Drive.
I looked in the internet and found this page -> http://american-media.com/support/downloadDDDS2316CBK.html
I was about to download the *Firmware Update* but i read this:
AMS is not held responsible for any damage caused by misusage of this utility! Use at your own risk and be aware that your warranty might be void! DO NOT CHANGE
ANY SETTINGS WITHOUT CONSULTING TECHSUPPORT. Do not distribute or post these files on the internet!
I searched in Internet and found that many persons had issues connecting Hard Drives using Firewire port and read some tips (like unplugging all the usb firewire devices unless mouse and keyboard, disconnect AC cable, wait 15 minutes, ...) but couldn´t fix the problem.
I also wrote several emails to the manufacturer of Venus hard drives (American-Media) but so far no answer.
I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to connect the Venus DS3 to a Mac G4 (OS 10.3.9) via FireWire.
    Thank you very much

I suspect the problem is in the size of the drive. You say the drive was formatted for Mac and Windows. How did you do that? With older Macs, there is a 128 gB limit on drive size.
Here is a link to a third party disk utility that claims it gets around the size limit:
    http://www.SpeedTools2.com/
Another possibility is to connect the drive to a Windows machine and re-format it into 3 volumes, each less than 128 gB. The Mac should be able to see the partitions.
    Sidebar comments:
    • The way I read the information on the AMS web page that you cited, you do not need a driver. And that is consistent with my experience with firewire enclosures.
    • Inside the AMS enclosure, the drive is a standard ATA/IDE drive. That you can use the drive with a USB connection is proof the drive itself is working.
    • The "bridge" is a key component in FW conectivity. (That is a piece of circuitry that sits between the IDE drive and the FW connection. It is inside the enclosure.) It appears your enclosure has the Oxford 911 chipset on the bridge. That is good.

  • Recording to external hard drives - Firewire 800 problems

Ok so i did post a similar thread on this in the "mac mini" part of the website so im very sorry for double posting but I thought since this problems pertains mostly to recording and specifically recording on garageband, that I would try posting here as well. Heres my deal:
I am a musician working with garageband and I have always been recording to my internal drive until recently. I was unaware until I read some posts here from the good people like you guys, that that is not a good idea to record to your internal drive. So, I got an external firewire 800 drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DGZ05A) and this cable (http://www.amazon.com/2M-Firewire-800-9PIN-Cable/dp/B000XQILWK/ref=pdbxgy_e_imgb). When I received it, I first used disk utility and reformatted it for Mac OS Extended Journaled. Then I proceeded to move a couple sample libraries and my entire "Garageband" folder (with my saved songs in it) to the external. I instantly knew something was wrong. The files were taking forever to get written over. It took about 15 mins for a 5GB folder to be moved over. I was already discouraged. Anyway, I plugged in the USB cable that came with the external (the drive has hook ups for both USB 2 and firewire 400/800) and tried moving the same files and it was MUCH faster. The same 5GB file was moved over in a matter of minutes.
I then tried recording to the drive (using firewire again) and it would hardly even PLAY the song without stopping every couple seconds (too many effects error, and yes ALL the tracks were locked). Tried to record as well and i'd get even less time before garageband would stop the song with the same error. So I disconnected firewire and went USB. Thru USB the song didnt stop once, not on playback OR recording. Then I moved the songs back to my internal and played them (and recorded) with no problem either.
I ran a couple tests on the drive using AJA system test and came back with these results:
Basic test of read/write speed using firewire 800:
    write - 14/mb sec
    read - 21/mb sec
    then, using usb 2.0
    write - 18/mb sec
    read - 37/mb sec
both these connections seemed to be running slower then they should ..but at least the USB connection would actually let me play a song and record to it without stopping
I manually copied over a 2.04GB file and via firewire 800 connection it took 2 mins and 20 secs. Via the USB 2 connection it was 55 seconds! ..also, while i transfered the files i noticed that the USB transfer was nice and steady with tiny increments of the file being transferred. Firewire, however, was speedy then slow, speedy then slow. Very inconsistant transfer speed throughout the process. kind of choppy
So what gives? I cant figure out if I'm doing something wrong, or if my external HD is bad? Or the cable is bad? Or maybe the firewire port on my mac mini is bad (i've never used it before for anything other than this external drive). Or i'm thinking maybe my processor isnt strong/fast enough to record to the external firewire drive? Im working with a mac mini 120GB internal HD and the 2ghz intel core 2 duo with only 2GB ram (i know thats not ideal for recording and im planning to upgrade at some point, but i have been recording to the internal just fine with the RAM i have now and never had a problem until trying to record to the firewire drive). I was going to go out today and get a new cable and see if that was the cause of it. Anyway sorry for the book-length post! But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advance

Strictly my opinion, and more than happy to be educated with facts and convinced otherwise... but, there are no dangers.
Bottom line is this... does your specific computer setup encounter ANY problems during recording or editing with your chosen software and current workflow? If not, then there is nothing wrong. Simple as that. Further, if you are having problems, then its more than likely dealt with by upgrading RAM amount and internal HDD speed and size. If you have a slightly older machine that is pre FW800, you will find by bench marking your HDD's that an upgraded internal system HDD will significantly outperform any external HDD read/write spec's. Even with FW800, comparing apples with apples, your system HDD will more than likely have better spec's. Please however, do not take my word for this, but try it out for yourself. Make sure you have facts about your own system rather than believing my claims or anyone else's claims. I used Intech's Quickbench http://www.speedtools.com/QuickBench.html to get some facts about my machine.
There will be an argument made that you will be putting strain on your hard drive by recording to the system drive because it not only has to deal with this function but also with other functions related to your audio programs and OS. Apparently you may be working it on the 'hard' side and shorten its life span. Probably technically correct but practically speaking you will more than likely never even notice any such strain. If you are worried about a system HDD crash or death because you are working it too hard then the answer to this is a well planned back up regime. You should have one anyway, regardless of setup.

  • WD My Book 1 TB External Hard drive firewire cable won't fit into Mac Pro

Hi the firewire cable that came with my Western Digital My book External Hard Drive won't fit into my Quad Core Mac Pro. Is it the wrong cable? What's the correct cable that would connect my Western Digital External Hard Drive into my Quad Core Mac Pro? Any help is greatly appreciated

If you have a port that looks like this one, it's FW400. If it looks like this one it's FW800. If you have one of each it supports both. If you don't have either then it's USB only.

    Hi all,
I just bought a Western Digital Hard Drive (My Book Home Edition) 1 TB. Thing is it works for USB 2.0 but my Imac won't recognize the drive when I plug it in a 400fw. I called western digital and tried the disk utility tricks, and still nothing. The 400 input on my computer is fine, so is the cable. In fact the computer worked fine with a 500 gb Lacie a few days ago.

  • Daisy Chain Camcorder- External Hard Drive (firewire)- PowerBook?

Will it really cause problems? I'm going to buy a firewire card to avoid any fw bus problems but for now, would it drop frames and cause trouble?
    Thanks
    Vito

It does for some, not for others. We always preach that you need the card for the additional bus so that we ensure that it will work.
I myself never had a problem daisy chaining camera/deck/computer. Heck, I have even captured to my internal drive without dropping frames, so...guess I am special.
Nah, others can do this, but most cannot, so we preach the conservative way of doing things.

  • New Extreme:  Using USB/FW hub w/FireWire hard drive

I have two laCie external hard drives, one a USB/FireWire and one FireWire only. There are hubs available that have both USB and FireWire ports. If I connect both the USB and the FireWire drives to such a hub, and then connect the hub to the USB port on the new Airport Extreme base station, will my computer be able to read the FireWire drive as well as the USB drive? That is, can I use the hub to link both the USB hard drive and the FireWire hard drive using the USB port on the Extreme? Thanks very much for any thoughts.

I have two laCie external hard drives, one a
USB/FireWire and one FireWire only. There are hubs
available that have both USB and FireWire ports. ...
I am planning to attach the same two hard drives (Firewire only and USB/Firewire) to an Airport Extreme BS. Lacie was advertising the connectablility of several HDs with Firewire to build a cluster when I bought the "Firewire only" drive 2004. So my suggestion:
    1. connect the HDs via Firewire
    2. connect the USB/Firewire HD to the Airport Extreme
Unfortunately I cannot test this setup because I will only buy the USB/Firewire HD and the Airport if someone tells me it will work.
Would step 2 cause the same problems as using dscott1000s hub, or do these USB/Firewire drives have a USB-Firewire-bridge?

  • External Firewire hard drive won't mount after 10.4.10 update

I see many posts about USB drives not mounting after 10.4.10 update. Just lending my voice to that issue (my USB drive won't work either) as well as the 10.4.10 update breaking Firewire drives.
Hope a fix is coming. No backups are scaaaary.

How to fix the problem of a missing external Hard Drive (Firewire) after it vanishes from you desktop after installing 10.4.10 update.
I have a iMac PPC (Non intel). Aparently my system upated installed the wrong version of 10.4.10 and thus my external firewire hard drives a 320 GB Westerndigital My Book, and Acomdata 80 GB, and aWestern Digital 160 GB media center all vanished from the desktop.
The instructions below should be credited to several different people. I found various version of these steps in the Discussion. I combines a few of them into this one 10 step fix and it worked for me. I hope it works for you.
    1) Shut down you computer
    2) Unplug all peripherals (i.e USB and Firewire, I left computer power plug in as well as ethernet and Keyboard+ Mouse) and leave along for 30 Minutes
    3) Restart holding down the Command (Apple) + Option + P + R keys for three startup bongs, then release the keys and your computer will start up as usual.
    4) Verify and repair disk Permission using Disk Utility. (Several things were repaired here)
    5) Instal 10.4.10 Combo PPC
    6) Restart Again
    7) Again repair Disk permissions (None of mine needed to be repaired fyi this time)
    8) Unplug Power cable and Firewire cable from External Hard Drive (leave along for 1 minute)
    9) Reconnect power to Firewire External Drive first then the Firewire cable to the drive second, then the firewire cable from the Drive to the computer last.
    10) Turn on your Firewire Drive... you will head it spin up and eventually show up on your desktop just like it did before the 10.4.10 update.

  • MacBook Pro 15" early 2008 Hard Drive Upgrade & More

I have a MacBook Pro early 2008 15" and would like to upgrade the hard drive to a 1TB but my local Mac Approved Tech Store is advising against it.  They suggest 500GB.  I have taken up photography and have large jpeg files to store.  Also will this machine handle post processing of raw photos in PhotoShop and Lightroom?  It only has 4MB of ram and USB2.0 for use with auxiliary hard drives + firewire.  Who thought one new D7100 camera would cause so many issues.  Thanks so much!

Concerning SSD I am just concerned about how many dollars I pump into a 6 year old box & then something big goes.
That is a very legitimate concern with an Early 2008 MBP. It and the Late 2007 models have the flaky Nvidea GeForce 8600M GT video chipset that is known to fail. The only fix is a new logic board and they can be is short supply; too many used/pulled boards have the same bad chipset. Apple had a program to fix this at no cost to you, but it expired in December 2012.
The failure is heat-related so, in the meantime, do everything possible to keep your MBP from overheating. No gaming, no "skins" on the case. Keep the MBP on a chill pad or at least add some spacers under it to get more air to the case bottom.
Don't run any anti-virus, cleaning or third-party backup software. Unfortunately, watching we videos will also run up the heat to level that could send the Nvidea hardware over the edge.
Avoid using it in clamshell more. And--here's where I failed and lost my Late 2007 MBP to the nVidea Curse--don't walk away during major OS updates. The computer can run hotter during the update process and that was enough to take mine to the recycle bin.

  • 2 macs share same hard drive?

I need help with a solution.
I need to use older Adobe Software (LiveMotion) Unfortunately, it does not work with OS X beyond 10.3.
I want to use the new OS X on my G5.
I want to use one of my older Macs, I have a G4 and a G3, (would prefer to use G3), and leave it set with older system software to design in, but, use my G5 for everything else.
This will only work if the 2 computers can share a hard drive (firewire), or have access to the same hard drive.
How simple is it to share a monitor with the two?
Or I can set up two separate stations as long as I have access to the hard drives.
    thanks for any help.

    Hi George
You can share your hard drive files through Personal File Sharing. By default, this will share out your user folder (or the whole hard drive, if you log in as admin), but you can customize this more using SharePoints (which I recommend).
You can share a single monitor (and keyboard and mouse, if you like) between two Macs using a KVM switch such as this one.

  • Recovering data from "crashed" hard drive - white macbook

I have a 13" white macbook (my daughter's macbook). It looks like the hard drive crashed. She took it to Apple store they told her they can replace the hard drive (still under Apple care), but I am trying to get the data from the hard drive.
I pulled the hard drive out of the macbook, and put it in a external hard drive enclosure, with USB2 connector. Unfortunately I have to connect the USB to a Windows PC, since that's what I have (she took my PowerBook for school work). The wondows machine does not recognize the hard drive. I tried to connect to a Vista machine and an XP machine same problem.
Do I have to connect it to a Mac to be able to recognize this hard drive? I thought as long as I put it in a external disk enclosure I will be able to recognize it even with Windows machine.
    I would appreciate any help.
p.s. I do hear (faint) clicking noise from the hard drive - both when it is in the macbook and when it is in the external enclosure.
    Thanks.

The enclosure is format "agnostic". A drive could conceivably be formatted in several different Apple formats; HFS+ (aka Mac OS Extended) is likely what you have. There's Windows based FAT32 or NTFS.
Windows doesn't properly recognize Mac drive formats unless you add software. There are a couple of commercial tools that might work.

  • External hard drive mysteriously disappeared.

My external hard drive (Firewire) mysteriously disappeared. I can get it to pop up in Disk Utility, but I can't get it to show on the desktop. I've tried it on a few Mac computers. Do you have any idea what happened?

That's very strange. I don't think I've heard of DU exhibiting that behavior before.
I presume the reason you don't want to erase the drive is that there is un-backed-up data on it, and that if you could recover that data you could either reformat (erase) or dispose of the drive.
You may want to try downloading and using the free demo version of one or more of these data recovery utilities:
    Data Rescue II
    FileSalvage
    VirtualLab
In each case, the demo will show you what files the full version would be able to recover from the drive. You can then decide whether the files you could recover are valuable enough to justify buying the full version of the utility.
