Hard Drive Format Query

I have just purchased a second hand hard drive and have a query about it.
First of all I went into the disk utility and formatted it as Mac OS Extended but I still get the following below:
Mount Point :          /Volumes/2tb G Drive          Capacity : 2 TB (2,000,054,960,128 Bytes)
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)       Available : 2 TB (1,999,202,377,728 Bytes)
Owners Enabled : No                                    Used : 852.6 MB (852,582,400 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 11                                Number of Files : 55
Why would I have 852mb used, 11 folders and 55 files if I had erased it?

  • Hard drive formatting problem

    Hi there,
I've been stupid and I'm looking for some advice.  What happened was I went and tried to install Windows 8.1 on my iMac, had a problem with the installation process and whilst in the Windows installer, I ended up screwing up a partition which has ended up as free space which OSX disk utility won't let me format, delete or repartition.  It won't work either from within Mavericks or when booted from either a recovery disk or a USB drive Mavericks installer.  I've got everything backed up so a complete hard drive format is fine, in fact I already tried that, so starting from scratch might be easiest. If anybody has any ideas how I could fix this I'd be grateful.
At the moment the drive is showing four partitions, Macintosh HD is 2.5TB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s4 is 314.6MB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s6 is 134.2MB OS Extended (Journaled) and Free Space is 499.98GB Free Space.
    Macintosh HD is working fine.
disk1s4 I'm unable to delete, merge or reformat.
disk1s6 is between a rock and a hard place, because...
Free Space is just flat out unusable.
    System is 27" iMac 3.5GHz Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 3.12TB Fusion Drive
Any help would be appreciated, I'll try not to screw up this time...
    Thanks,
    Kev

    Hi malevolus,
It looks like the partition map of your iMac’s fusion drive is corrupted. Fortunately since you have a backup of everything, we don’t have to worry about data loss. Reformatting of a fusion drive does require some special steps though. See this article -
Mac mini (Late 2012), iMac (Late 2012 and later): About Fusion Drive

    In Particular -
    Troubleshooting
The version of Disk Utility that comes with Fusion Drive is unique. Earlier versions of Disk Utility can't be used with a Fusion Drive.
If your system will not start because you see a flashing question mark or another alert:
Press the Power button and hold it down to power off your system.
Press the Power button again. After you hear the startup chime, press and hold Command-Option-R to start up to the Internet version of Mountain Lion Recovery.
A globe should appear with a "Starting Internet Recovery" message. It is now OK to release Command-Option-R.
A progress bar should appear and Internet Recovery should start and ask you to select a language.
Once you select a language, click Disk Utility in the window that appears and then click Continue.
If your Fusion Drive can be fixed with Disk Utility, you'll see a Disk icon with red lettering. Click the disk icon.
A dialog box appears offering to fix the Fusion Drive (shown above). Caution: Clicking Fix will erase your Fusion Drive. If you have a Time Machine backup of your Fusion Drive Mac, see Mac 101: Time Machine for information on how to restore from a Time Machine backup once the drive has been erased.
              8.  After the process is complete, the volume will change color to black. Quit Disk Utility, click Install Mac OS X, then click Continue to reinstall OS X                         Mountain Lion.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac

With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac. The record contained files windows. How to recover?
Serious mistake: to connect a Mac to an external drive with data (important!) Windows, the warning appears: "You want to use the disk for Time Machine?" Wrong button, so in 2-3 seconds, the disk is formatted. Now Mac "sees" the disc but empty, Windows does not see it under "My Computer" but in "Disk Management" is reported as "hard core", "healthy", "GPT protective partition" Is there a way to retrieve the files? Sorry for my English Thanks

I'm having a difficult time following, I understand English isn't your native language. You may have good luck with Google Translate.

  • Hard drive format for sharing

I've trying to set up a Mac and PC network using an Airport Extreme Base Station. What hard drive format is supported by both Windows and Mac OS? I'm switching over from a PCs so most my extermal hard drives are NTFS, but it seems that Airport Extreme isn't able to share this format over the network.

I've found that many people have similar questions, but I still haven't seen the direct answer.
In particular, I want to know which format is easiest for the Airport Extreme to share over a network, which both PCs and Macs will have access.
I would like to share my iTunes library over the network, as well as DIVX films, plus I will have InDesign files that I need to work on both on the PC (running Windows 7) and Macs.

There are 2 possibilities for you:
    1. when you use it only for macs, do as Mike said,
    2. when you us it on windows also the NTFS is better than Fat32, and then you can install a NTFS driver on your Mac: either a paid driver from Paragon or a free driver from Tuxeira.

HI, I have all the music on my ipad, but following a hard-drive format on my pc, I have lost all the music on itunes, which were cd uploads.  How do I copy the music back from my ipad to itunes on my pc ? ple help

You will need to use a third-party program, you computer's iTunes can only copy iTunes purchases back (File > Transfer Purchases, File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). There are a number of programs listed half-way down this page which you could try : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • External hard drive format for use in both OS9 and OSX

I have never use OS9. A friend of mine wants to transfer their files from an OS9 computer to an OSX computer. Is there a hard drive format that can be used on both OS9 and OSX. It would be great to be able to transfer the files over on my Firewire hard drive.
    Many thanks,
    Beaglebrain.

    Beaglebrain,
Should have added that you should check the size of your HD. OS9 won't recognise anything beyond about 190GB.

  • Hard drive formats.

Hey all! Here's a rather easy question. In Disk Utility, under the erase tab, there are many options to choose from when reformatting another hard drive or disk. Could some one lead me to a link or maybe explain to me what the different hard drive formats mean? TIA!

    Anybody at all?

  • External Hard drive formats

    Hi All,
I'd like to know what hard drive format is compatible for reading and writing files for both my MacBook Pro, Mac OS X 10.6 and a PC?
    Thanks

I'd format the drive on a PC as NTFS and use Paragon's NTFS for Mac to read and write files to the drive. It's only $20 and it works well. You could always format as exFAT as well - that's free.

  • Backup of iTunes library for prior to hard drive formatting

My PC is currently running on Windows XP and has become very sluggish, so I'm going to format my C: drive and then install Windows 7. I'd like to check what I need to do with iTunes prior to and after formatting my C: drive.
My music files are on an external hard drive, and as well as a backup of these, I also have a backup of the My Documents\My Music\iTunes folder, which I believe holds all the info regarding play counts, playlists etc. (please coorect me if I'm wrong).
I'm assuming I then need to do the following:
    - deauthorise my PC for my Apple account and then uninstall iTunes software
    - format my C: drive, then install Windows 7
    - download iTunes software from the Apple website and authorise my PC.
I just want idiot-proof clarification on the easiest way to get all my tracks and playlist/library info back onto my PC and into iTunes from the the external hard drive, so I have exactly the same library and info that I currently have.
    Many thanks,
    Dan Southam

More or less... You can leave out the uninstalling iTunes part, the format will take care of that.
On your rebuilt machine you need to make sure that the same drive letter is assigned to your external drive otherwise the paths that iTunes holds for your files will become invalid. You can restore your backup of the iTunes library folder into C:\Users\<You>\Music\iTunes install iTunes and all should be fine.

  • How can I transfer files off an external hard drive formatted for windows?

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc.  The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows.  My mac will open it, but it is "read only."  I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first.  Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!  Heads up though, I am not especially computer literate, and my pc needs to stay intact as the husband needs it and some of the programs on it for school.  Also, I have a second external hard drive that is brand new with nothing on it, if that will come in handy.
    Thanks!

Format the extra HDD to EXFAT as previously indicated.  There are two ways that can use to transferr the data.
    1.  Connect both drives to the PC and the copy the files to the newly formatted (EXFAT) drive from the HDD with the data .  Then connect the EXFAT drive to the MBP and transfer the data to same.
    2.  Connect both drives to the MBP and open DISK UTILITY>RESTORE.  Drag the drive with the data on it to the 'Source' field.  Drag the EXFAT drive to the 'Destination' field.  Click on the 'Restore' butt is on.  After the transfer has been completed, close DISK UTILITY and place the data on the MBP where you want it.
    Ciao.

  • Hard drive formatting for OSX and Windows 7 using GUID

    Hey,
I am currently trying to format a 2TB WD Elements external hard drive so that I can use one half with Time Machine and the other half with Windows 7 (run using Boot Camp). From looking around online it appears that GPT is the best to use, and so using Disk Utility I formatted the hard hard drive into 2 partitions, one being Mac Os Extended (Journaled) and left the other as empty space. I then switched to Windows 7 (on the same machine) and formatted the empty space as NTFS. The problem is that now Windows 7 can see both partitions (and can see the contents of the HFS partition which I didn't think would be possible) but OSX can only see the NTFS partition (and has changed the label of the HFS partition from what I set to "disk0s2" when viewed in Disk Utility). I've probably done something very wrong, can anyone help?
    Cam

you would have been fine had you set the free space to FAT instead.
You can read only from Windows to HFS unless you buy 3rd party HFS driver.
    Same for NTFS only reverse.
You do not need or want to use BC Assistant for that external drive. At. All.
