Hard Drive Full - But with What?

We find that our iMac HD is full. I did a search for big files, anything over 100,000 kb and found one big whopper: it's called appleuser.sparseimage.
Can I delete this? What is it? Any tips for finding big files that might be stealing lots of room?

Hello sort of a nubee on Imac problems.
I have a 297g capacity drive, after getting info on files I noticed only about 80g that I have used but tried to load new turbo tax program and was told there was no space and had to clear some out.
I have read many posts, used start up disk to fix drive and check for errors. I ran a suggested search in Terminal for large files and found these large, can someone help on how to go about and deleting them?

  • Hard Drive Full (but not full)

    Hi All,
I'm not sure I have sufficient technical knowledge to follow other, similar threads on this topic.  I'd benefit from a bit of gentler handling, if that's okay!
I have a relatively new MBP with a 500GB hard drive (flash storage).  I am good with my back-ups and use Time Machine in conjunction with an external HD and have backed up old video and image files to a 2TB external hard drive.
What is happening continually is that my Hard Drive gets almost completely used up very quickly.  I have used OmniDiskSweeper to get a view on the size of files - the largest folder (as you might expect) is the Users folder at just over 100GB.  Nothing is else is all that big - so maybe a total usage of 130GB in all.
I think the problem comes from the idea of 'hidden backups'.  I recently imported some raw video into iMovie, which I then saved out as a .MOV file and moved off to an external HD, deleting the local copy.  If I've read other threads correctly, the MBP holds some of these large files as a snapshot in time of the drive.
However, how can I get rid of these and get back to a relatively clean HD without doing a complete reinstall?
    Suggestions are warmly welcomed.
    Patrick

Please read this Apple support article on Time machine snapshots.

They are meant to be only temporary and will drop off if space is needed for other data.  In that regard, you may ignore them.
    Ciao.

Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive

My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive.
Do you know how I can tell how large each file is taking up and what my 'other' category could be?
    thanks

Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)
    For more about backups:

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6031
    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  This will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

  • What brand external hard drive is best with time machine

what brand of external hard drive works best with time machine?

Contrary to the other two replies, I will relate what I've read here: WD drives are fine, but their (cheap?) enclosures are subject to failure. Some buy a bare WD drive and install it in an Oxford Chip external enclosure (OWC / macsales.com would be one source). And, I have two LaCie Quadras and one OWC Mercury Pro - both are generally recommended here. If you want it bootable, most WD drives do not support it:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1787/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvd GltZS8xMzUxNTIzMzIwL3NpZC9ueUFYc1g5bA%3D%3D
Please note: it's good to have an external hard drive which has its own power supply and, as mentioned, FW 800 or USB 3). You also do not need any software that comes on the external - you will most likely need to format it anyway because most come formatted for Windows, but that is easy using Disk Utility.

  • Macbook Air's hard drive full with files under the 'other' category - how do I find these files and delete them?

A few days ago a pop up message came up on my screen saying that my hard drive was full, and that I could not install valuable updates because I did not have enough space on my computer. I checked my computer's storage space only to find that 18.22GB of my hard drive was filled with files/programs under the 'other' category. I have deleted all my downloads, most of my pictures and have done virus scans and I still don't have enough room. How do I find out what is in this 'other' category so that I can delete these files (which seem to be hidden) or whatever they may be?

    1. Empty Trash.
        http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
    2. Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
Hold the option key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
        Select "Library" from the dropdown.
        Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes
        Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
        Empty Trash. Restart.
    3. Repair Disk

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

  • What is a good external hard drive for use with a macbook air?

I am looking at purchasing a macbook air 13". What is a good external hard drive to use with it? Should I look for an external hard drive with its own a/c power or is the usb 3.0 capable of powering the external drive.

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

  • Hard drive full on wake. But restart fixes it?!

When I wake my mac from sleep in the morning my mac is running really slow and it says my hard rive is full, but I know this isn't true. When I do a restart it shows the hard drive with 10% free as it should be (22GB on a 250GB hard drive)
Why is it doing this and forcing a restart?!
    Thanks,
    James

  • Got a new Macbook Pro today and I plugged in my WD external hard drive to backup with but it didn't allow me to backup.

Got a new Macbook Pro today and I plugged in my WD external hard drive to backup with but it didn't allow me to backup. The problem is that now my computer won't show the drive in finder. I can see it in Disk Utility and cannot access it. Help?

    First
    Finder>Preferences>Sidebar>Devices>External disk
but it didn't allow me to backup
did you get an error code or error dialog box?

  • I am trying copy dvd's (with no luck) to my macbook and then on to an external hard drive.  What appears to be "copied" on the hard drive comes up with an error when you try to view the movies.

I am new to the Apple community and am having a lot of trouble.  I am using a Macbook Pro and attempting to copy movies to an external hard drive for my husbands upcoming travels.  I have used the "disk utility" and was able to watch the movie from my Pro but have not been able to figure out how to copy it to the external hard drive.  I have a few movies on the external hard drive already but when he tries to view them from his Macbook Air or even the Pro we are unable to do so.  An error message comes up and we are not able to determine what we need to do to fix this.  We are not computer savvy and would appreciate if someone could explain to us how to resolve this problem.  Thank you for all and any help we can get.

The movies are Dexter that we purchased at a store.  He uses the Air and since it does not have the disk option this is how we were hoping he could view his shows.  We had no idea we would be breaking the law....just wanted to put all of the movies we have purchased  on the external solely for the intent of our viewing.
Thank you for your time and help.
    Sorry.

I had iLife pre-installed on my aluminium Macbook 2009 with OSX Leopard on it. My hard drive broke but got most of the info off it and just installed snow Leopard on to a new drive and then downloaded and installed Mountain Lion over it. Now I don't have iLife anymore. How do I get it back?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X doesn't come with iLife applications, so you have to install them manually after installing Mac OS X.
Insert the Applications disc or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 DVD and install iLfe applications. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest update. If you want, you can purchase iMovie, GarageBand and iPhoto in the App Store, so you will get the most recent version

  • What is the best external hard drive to use with a macbook?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive for my macbook pro (2010).  I understand that some hard drives have issues when used with Lion.
Does anyone have any suggestions for which is the best to buy?

Any hard drive should work. I don't know of any issues caused by a specific brand of hard drive for working with Lion.
Now as far as the hard drive itself goes there are a few options. Most external drives run at 7200 rpm. Some however still run at 5400 rpm (rpm is the speed of the disk in layman's terms). Faster is better in most cases, however they do produce slightly more sound and run hotter, but not by much.
Then there is also the choice between USB and FireWire (thunderbolt is still to pricy). FireWire runs faster, but is more expensive.
    Those are your choices.
