Hard Drive Gone!?

So I left my computer on when I went out somewhere earlier today. It put the screen to sleep, like it usually does. Nothing was out of the ordinary, but when I got back, I clicked the command button on the keyboard, which is what I am in the habit of pressing to wake it up from sleep. The screen flashed for a second like normal, but then the screen stayed dark. I clicked a couple other buttons and tried to move the mouse...all to no avail. So, I clicked to turn off the computer, which resulted in the wallpaper popping up, but with nothing on top (so nothing on my desktop...no dock...no top bar...nothing...). So I held the power button to turn it off. When I tried to turn in back on, it just had a white screen forever, so I held the button to turn it off.
I waited a couple mins to let it cool down, then I tried turning it on again. Same problem. On the 4th try, instead of just being a white screen after a while, it showed an icon of a folder with a question mark in it. This icon was flashing. This seems bad to me...
So, I tried using the Leopard install disk to do a disk repair, but disk utility only recognized the Leopard disk. It did not recognize any hard drive. This trend continued. My friend hooked my mac up to his via firewire to see if he could access it, and he could only access the Leopard disk through my computer. Just for me to use in the meantime, he installed Leopard on an external hard drive, and I am running that just so I can study for my exams (of course...great timing). This version of Leopard running on my computer still doesn't recognize my internal hard drive.
So, I don't know what to do...is my hard drive dead? Nothing will recognize it. If it is dead, what are my options? I have most things backed up, but I don't have my pictures from my three most recent trips backed up, and I really don't wanna lose those. I know it is difficult to actually wipe clean a hard drive, so is there any way (if it is dead) that I could obtain these files (or someone could get them out for me)? If the drive is dead, how much does it cost to get a new internal hard drive. I heard it's not too expensive as far as computer parts go. My Macbook is almost 3 years old now.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can try the Apple Hardware Test by holding down the D key while starting up with in install disk. If it still can’t find the disk, you should take it to an Apple store to check it.
Depending on the specs of a new internal drive, they are commonly found for US$100 to $200, as I recall.

  • Iphoto library stored on external hard drive GONE

My iphoto library has been stored on an external hard drive for a couple of years now, has always worked perfectly until today...I noticed that my desktop photo was gone, so I opened iphoto, and it says that the library cannot be found...at which point I noticed the hard drive is no longer showing up on the desktop of my imac. Also tried connecting it to our macair...also doesn't show up and asks if I want to initialize it...HELP!! I need my pics!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sounds like a hard drive problem rather than an iPhoto one. If the drive won't mount so the library is available iPhoto won't work. So I'd run Disk Utility and see if it can see the drive. If it can then run DU and try to repair the disk. Otherwise you'll have to take the drive in to a service provider to see if they can mount the drive and save the files.

  • Please Help - Hard Drive Gone - Won't Mount - No AppleCare...

    Hi guys,
    I'm in trouble here..
I was loading a bunch of photos from an external drive to iPhoto and my iMac froze up for a long time.
    I couldn't do anything at all - so I finally force-powered down.
When I powered back up - My Hard Drive was gone and Finder will not open.
Other applications in my dock such as web browsers, iTunes etc. seem to be unaffected - I can also access Disk Utility and other Apps through Spotlight, but No sign of my "Macintosh HD".
I ran a "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility - and here's the report it provided:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
---The "Repair Disk" Button in Disk Utility is all grayed out though so I can't run it...
I'm at a loss. I can't afford AppleCare, and they won't help me because I'm just out of my 90 day phone support...
I'm on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac - the last Glossy White one before the new ones.
I've got the latest version of Tiger.
Any advice would be a Godsend. I'm afraid I may have ruined my iMac.
    Thanks!

We usually try to give folks who come here simplified advice that keeps them comfortable troubleshooting and repairing their Macs and won;t raise other issues for them. Command line tools don't usually fall into the simplified category and fsck for Mac OS X Tiger is not recommended by Apple, except as a last resort. It is known to cause other issues.
    From the Apple Knowledge Base article that Dale has linked below;
Note: If you're using Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you should use Disk Utility instead of fsck, whenever possible.
If you can successfully start up in Safe Mode or use Disk Utility while started up from a disc, you don't need to use fsck.
IMO, it isn't helpful for you to come along and contradict sound advice from folks who have used the Knowledge Base and are aware of Apple's recommendations because you think that you know better.

  • Hard drive gone from start up disk

    Hi folks
I have a serious problem with a 2nd generation G5 iMac. I tried to erase and install Tiger (retail version bought from Mac Store after consultation with Mac support), failed and hung up for 6 hours until I switched the thing off and my hard drive icon no longer appears in the startup list. I can't even reach options stage on install procedure - my hard drive icon has GONE! So no utilities from the Install disk. The mistake I may have made was to try the Unix erase and Install procedure.
I have tried to get in using my mac mini as target drive but this seems not to offer a way out of the s**t! - can't find a way of reinstating a hard drive icon for the iMac in the startup folder.
Any bright ideas out there or do I need to get a new Apple formatted hard drive?
    Many thanks.

The iMac G5 second generation Mac shipped with Tiger, and therefore the retail 10.4.0 installer disk will not work on it. If you are missing the gray 10.4 disks which shipped with it, call AppleCare for replacement disks:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
The serial number should be on the bottom of the foot of the machine. If it is missing, the machine has been through at least a logicboard repair, and you need to find out from the original owner what the original serial number was and/or look on the box it shipped in.
Apple does sell a retail version of 10.4.6 which should install on it.
If you have the version of 10.4.6 whose disks look like then you can probably just use the startup manager to boot off it, and then select the language, and Disk Utility from the Utilities menu to reformat the drive HFS+ (HFS Extended) Journalled. Quit from Disk Utility then, and reboot the machine. Then you'll be able to erase and install that system.

  • Hard Drive Gone Bad (2nd one)

I have a macbook, purchased in May of 2006. I have already replaced the harddrive once and it has gone bad again. I have a flashing folder with a question mark upon start up.
I do not have the extended warranty, but am concerned about putting in a new drive to have it go bad in a year. Have there been reports of the heat causing hard drive issues. I have also had to replace the battery as it lost power to quickly.
I have another macbook that was purchased at the same time that has never had any problems. I want to know about any related issues when I take my computer to Apple tomorrow.

Took the computer in today. I asked if the drive was a Saegate, indicating that I knew about the problems with the drive. He pulled it out. Yup, the Seagate model. I explained I knew it was out of warranty, but wanted to know what they would do.
He checked with someone and they are replacing the drive for me at no charge. I was very nice, never acted like I expected anything. But I also made sure to mention this was the second drive to go bad, that my child's mini mac had a bad motherboard after a month. Yet we own three apple computers and three iPods. I think being nice about it and a good customer helped me.

  • IPod Classic crashed - has the hard drive gone for good?

I have a 80gb iPod classic and it's crashed, bizarrely after charging it in a foreign country.
I've gone into the Diagnostic mode and got the following data:
    Reatracts - 8
    Reallocs - 1627
    Pending Sectors 18
    PowerOn Hours - 676
    Start/Stops - 113
    Temp:  24
    Min:     15
    Max     47
Does this mean my hard drive has crashed and a need to repair/replace? Or is there more I can do?
    Help very much appreciated! Thanks.

Can your iPod still play Music? or rather what is shown on the iPod Screen?
    Can Windows recognise your iPod?
Try to fix the hardisk, by putting it into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US
Then connect it to Windows and run in DOS
    Chkdsk drive: /R /F
Where drive is the iPod drive ID, like E: or F:
This will correct the filesystem and hopefully mark the bad cluster, which may bring down your Pending numbers..
    Have a nice day!

  • Where has the hard drive gone after installing lion?, where has the hard drive gone after installing lion?

I'm looking in finder but can no longer see the hard drive. Where has it gone to?

If I understand correctly, you can edit what is shown in the side bar within the "Finder Preferences".
under the "sidebar" tab tick the boxes of the things you want to be shown in the side bar of Finder.
under the "General" tab tick the boxes of the things you want to be shown on the desktop.
Hope this is what you are after and this helps.

  • PowerBook 15" - Hard drive gone bust. HELP!!!

    Hey guys,
    I've got a MacBook Pro and a PowerBook 15" Al 1.67ghz.
The hard drive in my PB has just gone bust, and I don't have the restore disks for OS X 10.5.
Seeing as my MacBook Pro has 10.5, would it be possible to move (via CCC or the like) the OS X from my MacBook Pro onto the new hard drive I've just replaced in my PowerBook? If so, how would I do this? Is it possible to boot from an external hard drive on a PowerBook?
By the way, just so you know, I have paid for both Mac OS X licenses.
    Thanks for your help!
    Andy

Hi, Andy. No, the OS from the Intel MBP won't run at all on the PowerPC Powerbook. And yes, you can boot the Powerbook from a FireWire (not USB) external drive, provided it contains a suitable PowerPC-native OS version.
You'll need a retail Leopard installer disc set to put Leopard on the Powerbook's new drive. There is no way you can use the MBP's installer discs or its installed OS, directly or indirectly, for that purpose.
You can, however, use the Install/Restore disc(s) that originally came with the Powerbook to install Panther or Tiger (whichever was originally installed on it at the factory). Model-specific discs that came with any other Mac model are very unlikely to work on it.

  • 380ED hard drive gone??

    Hello:
I have my record collection archived in an ancient 380ED (2635) Thinkpad.
Now I cannot access Windows 98.
Im getting error codes 00161 and 00163 . I think this has to do with fact that my CMOS battery is long dead. (This usually was no problem - just meant I had to reset the time/date each time I started up).
During the test for HDD-1       I get a grinding noise on the hardrive. The red error codes are:
    DEV 017
    ERR 22
    FRU 6010
I put these in the search and got no response as to what they mean.
According to the test, the system board is okay.
I disconnected and reconnected the hard drive to no avail.
Is my lp collection list gone for good then?
    Any hope to retreive?
(Oh yes - I did that freeze the hard drive deal. Again ,to no avail.)

    Hi,
Open System Preferences / Exposé & Spaces then select the Spaces tab.
If *Enables Spaces* is selected, deselect that box, restart your Mac.

  • External hard drive gone kaput

I have an old Mac mini (1.42 GH PowerPC G4, Mac OS X 10.4.11) with an 80 gig internal startup HD, and an external 250 gig Firewire HD. For the last couple of days, the external HD has not been getting recognized by the Mac. When I run Disk First Aid, the drive shows up, but the disc itself - "disc2s10" - is greyed out. When I run "Verify Disk", and subsequently "Repair Disk", I get the following response:
    "Checking HFS Plus volume
    Invalid node structure
    Invalid node structure
Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error"
I've tried everything - power on, power off, disconnecting and reconnecting every cable both on the Mac and on the external HD, but nothing seems to work.
I tried looking at solutions in the Apple Support section, but frankly, I've not had much success and am not even sure whether I did the right things.
Losing the disc would be a disaster - not least because I've painstakingly organized 18,000 songs in my iTunes library, and those songs are all stored on the spoilt HD!
The only other thing I can add is that the disk went bad after I Installed the latest Apple security update a few days ago. I don't know whether that had anything to do with this.
Finally, I've had some problems in the past with this HD - which is housed in a casing that has the same form factor as the Mac mini - in that it sometimes did not mount. But I believe that has been due to some loose internal connections between the disk and the casing. At any rate, that has not been a major problem.
Clearly, since the Mac mini says the disc is unreadable, it can "see" the disc.
    Could somebody please help? Thanx.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
When you get this message, does is also show a -9972 error number? If so, the Apple disk utility can't repair the drive. As Boece recommended, Disk Warrior, or similar, program would be your next step, and it can often repair what Disk Utility can't repair. However, if Disk Warrior can't repair it, then you want to look at other software to try and recover the data, as the next step would be an erase and restore. And if that didn't work, then the drive is toast. There are services that can recover the data off a dead drive, however, they are not inexpensive.
Some other thoughts ... can you open the hard drive case and pull the short cable off the hard drive and put it back on? Make a difference? Do you have another mac available to you that you could hook your external hard drive up to? Just to see if there's any difference in accessing it? Is it only a USB connection or can you also connect via firewire?

  • Hard drive gone bad??

My wife bought me the 15 Inch Macbook Pro approx 4 months ago. Approx 2 months ago I was having problems with the Mac freezing. One day it finally froze and wouldn't do anything. So I simply reinstalled the software. While trying to do this, A message kept coming up saying the hard drive was faulty and wouldn't install. I kept on trying and trying and spent days on working on it. I finally gave up and just used one of my external hard drives as the primary hard drive. This works fine except the external also needs a power source so thr is the problem. Also, when I use itunesand connect my 160GB ipod classic EVERYTHING freezes and will not unfreeze no matter what. If you try and close anything it just makes it worse. So I simply have to do a hard shut down. How do I fix this? Do I need to purchase a new internal hard drive. Will that work? Or, do I need to try and ship it to the apple store? The apple rep my wife talked to was not helpful at all. She only would tell us everything I have already done and tried. Thank you for any assistance...

Have you opened DISK UTILITY?  If not, do so and start with 'First Aid'.  You may eventually have to get a new hard drive.  Fortunately you are still under warranty.
    Good luck/
    Ciao.

  • WD My Book External Hard Drive Gone!

    Hey everybody,
I have a Western Digital My Book Premium Edition 500GB External Hard Drive. When trying to make a copy of my harddrive (preparations for Leopard) the driver it uses to run was deleted. Do you have any idea how I can restore it and get it back to normal?

I have a 1 TB Western Digital My Book Studio Edition. It worked as a stand alone drive for a while, using Firewire 800 to 400 cable. Yesterday I used it as a Time Machine drive. Took about 5 hours to back up 240 GB. Today I had about three power outages. The WD drive has not worked over Firewire since. I have tried various suggestions involving powering down both drive and iMac and attempting to connect. The Western Digital drive is not showing in Finder, System Preferences, or Disk Utility.
As it is a triple interface, I was able to connect it via the slower USB. Drive contents are intact, and Time Machine backs up over USB. I tried both Firewire ports on my iMac. I connected my other Firewire drive to the iMac. It works, so that proves the iMac Firewire port is OK. It is looking distinctly like the Western Digital My Book problem is either a faulty WD Firewire port, or possibly a faulty cable.
I should have a chance to try a different cable over the weekend. I will also be able to try the drive on a different computer. That should establish where the problem is.
I don't know any general way to force my iMac to search for a Firewire drive it simply does not see.

  • Transfer to External Hard drive gone wrong. Help!!!

I improperly transferred my Itunes, with all my music, to my external hard drive. Not knowing that I had to consolidate my library before hand, I just moved the Itunes application and my Music folder (which contained all of my current music plus a past library from another computer) to the hard drive. When it worked just the same as the Itunes on my internal, I deleted both my original Itunes application and music folder, only to find that after they were deleted, the external Itunes no longer worked as it had before. Now I have all my music and the Itunes application on my external hard drive, and I know there must be an easier way to put them back together then replacing each file one by one. Can someone please help a serious SNAFU? Thanks, at3.

If they're still in two folders (iTunes app and Music) on your external, can you not just copy those two back to the internal drive and expect it to work properly again? It's my understanding that music you wish to be active in iTunes must be on your internal drive.

  • External hard drive gone wrong and copied everything to Imac HDD filling it completely

I have had my iMac backed up to an external hard drive for years and randomly the External hard drive is now not readable and it has seemed to copy everything to my imac hard drive filling it completely.
any ideas how to firstly fix the external drive without losing everything on there and second why it would have copied everything to the Imac?
I cant even do a restore from a back up as its all backed up to external drive and its saying its not readable.

If they're still in two folders (iTunes app and Music) on your external, can you not just copy those two back to the internal drive and expect it to work properly again? It's my understanding that music you wish to be active in iTunes must be on your internal drive.

  • My new Macbook Air hard drive gone bad

My new macbook air hard drive just died on me last saturday while I was working on my paper. With that I've lost all my files. I took it to Apple store, but I was told that all they can do is to replace the hard drive for me.
I'm not really happy with the service. You pay so much more to get your money's worth. I was  suggested that if I wanted to retrieve my files I had to take it to an outside source for about $500-$700. It's like buying a defective device that causes you some nasty injury and when you ask for their part of responsibility they tell you to take a hike.
I wish there was a law that would be more protective of people's time and (intellectual) property as opposed to leaving us to the mercy of, ultimately, the greed that drives these companies.

    Fellows,
Please don't read my e-mail with your emotions. I have nothing against Apple other than my disappointment in this particular service that I received. I can make a long list of all the good things that Apple has brought in this world.
My point is this: whether Apple or a PC, when you buy a brand new computer, the manufacturer should not only replace the failed part (in my case it did, as is the norm in the industry), but TRY to retrieve the lost file(s), when is applicable, free of charge, during the warrantee period.
Does it make sense? I find this a very reasonable request/demand. Remember that, according to Apple representative, an outside source was potentially able to retrieve my files.
As a customer, I want to have a better service, especially when I pay more for the promised quality.
If we customers were happy with what is offered/or not, then we would have still worked 70 hours per week, our cars didn't a seatbelt, and ...
I hope this helps to clear my argument.
    Cheers,
I understand where you are coming from, however, there is nothing that they can do.  If the drive has been damaged and does not work, then there isn't anything that they can do.  When those other places charge the prices that they do, it's to pay for them having to physically remove the platters from the drive that you currently had, and keeping every tiny spec of dust off them as a spec of dust could render the platter useless if it gets caught between the heads and the platters.  This being said, they would then have to take those platters and place them in a new drive basically.  Most people understand that there is nothing that can be done when something like this happens, they have external drives and they backup all their data.  I have mine backed up on two seperate drives and in a remote location away from everything here.  Let's put it like this, say you bought a house, and then you put a lot of your memories and things and whatnot into your house, say pictures, papers, things like that.  Now your house burns down, would you expect the people that built your house be responsible and demand that they somehow get your pictures and things like that back from your house that were burned up?  It's kind of asking the same thing that you would get if you were to demand that they somehow magically make your drive start working and get the information off it.
