Hard drive / hub

I got a Belkin USB hub, recently I bought a firewire Lacie Hard drive. I want to connect my HUB hub into the USB input at the back of the hard drive. The USB output from the hub is a mini one, and the HUB input of the HD is not the "rectangular" one, but more of a square... I think is hi-speed 2.0?
Went to radio shack and got a usb cable/adapter, that has like 5 dif USB adaptors, so I got the mini for the output of the hub and the "square" for the back of HD, which is connected to my MBP via firewire.... the problem is that my hub doesnt work when I do this... like if its not being recognized... why?... I cant do this? (hub to hard drive) or is a problem of the adapter?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice!!

jaykay06,
If I'm reading your post correctly, you are attempting to connect your HD directly to your MBP via the HD's Firewire interface, then connect the USB hub to the HD via the HD's USB interface. You think that you should then be able to connect other peripherals to the hub. Correct?
No, this won't work. The USB interface on your HD is only intended to connect the HD directly to a computer. It is not intended to be used for "daisy chaining" other devices, and it won't work that way. Your HD can be connected to a computer using either the Firewire interface or the USB interface, but not both at the same time.
The only configuration between the two devices you have (the HD and the hub) that would work would be to use the HD's USB interface to connect via USB to the hub, then connect the hub to your MBP. Obviously, this would circumvent the HD's Firewire interface altogether, and I doubt that you could then "daisy chain" any other Firewire devices from the HD.

  • Lacie Hard Drive, iphoto, itunes

    Hi,
I have an external Lacie firewire hard drive hub ( the one that fits onto a mac mini ). I have been using this disk to store and access my photos and music for iphoto and itunes. I could quite easily use this disk to view photos and music using 10.4 on my powerbook laptop and mac mini eg the external hard disk is where the iphoto and itunes libraries are stored.
I have just bought a new macbook pro with 10.5 and when i plug in the external hard drive the icon on my desktop appears and i can access the disk but now when i go to itunes and iphoto and select the library location as the external hard drive - no photos or music will appear in iphoto and itunes even though the library location is set for the external hard drive.
Unfortunately right now im loading 10.5 onto my mac mini so cannot see if i can still view the photos on my 10.4 mac mini as its currently being upgraded to 10.5
Can someone tell me - does Lacie have a compatibility issue with 10.5
    arrggghhh

    further to previous post.
i copied my itunes library from the external hard drive onto my macbook pro desktop and pointed my itunes library to the desktop location and tunes and playlists are still not showing up in itunes. this worked under 10.4. so can anyone tell me if im missing something stupid here and can point me in the right direction.

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?
Can someone advise as to whether i can do the following:
Future Internet connection -------------------TIME CAPSULE (containing all files) -------------- Backed up on the WD 2T Hard-drive I have

I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)
    Kind Regards

  • Hard drive and hub with Time Capsule

I want to add a hard drive to my Time Capsule 2TB. I've read the other posts here, but am still feeling uncertain about how to be successful. I have a printer connected, and want to keep it connected, so I know I need a hub. I have a USB-powered hard drive that I'd like to use, and I have a USB-powered hub that I could use.
    I think I understand:
    1. I cannot use a USB-powered hub with a USB-powered hard drive.
    2. I can use a USB-powered hub with an externally powered (desktop) hard drive.
    3. I can use an externally powered USB hub with a USB-powered hard drive, however, not all hubs will work in this configuration.
    Do I have this right?
And the next question, is anyone using an externally powered USB hub that they know works with the Time Capsule?

    Do I have this right?
    Yes.
And the next question, is anyone using an externally powered USB hub that they know works with the Time Capsule?
It is harder than you think to say.. brand x or brand y works.. because the companies that sell them buy from several sources and make the factories in China bid for their work.. one year they use this chip and the next year a different factory and a different chip.. but USB hubs are too cheap to get proper revisions.
So I read a belkin xyz works fine from one poster and another say that bought the same one and it failed.. both are right.. welcome to the bottom end of the market.
Buy the cheapest hub you can from whoever is nearest to you.. and check if they will swap if it does not work. The cheap generics often work fine.
I have been trying to help get a database of what is compatible.
USB drive compatibility with Airport Routers. Help make database.
This is looking particularly at USB disks. powered hubs are just too numerous.
If you want a good place to buy that is likely to stock stuff that works ring OWC (if you live in the US) for their recommended ones.. it will likely be a few dollars more but they would quickly find what is working in the stock and what doesn't.

  • Time capsule won't recognise external hard drive, even when formatted correctly and connected to a powered USB hub

    Hey
i have an apple time capsule (not the very latest one, but the one before that) and i am trying to connect my 1.5TB toshiba hard drive to it. i understand that it needs to be powered, so i purchased a usb hub ("usb hub man" by Gadget Geek) and bought an adapter to power it.
The hard drive won't show up in finder or disk utility, however i can see it in airport utility.
it is formatted correctly - Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) and works perfectly fine from my macbook pro usb port.
Also, when i connect a smaller hard drive to the hub (16GB) that shows up in finder as normal.
so it seems that everything is perfectly fine, however this 1.5TB hard drive just wont show up in finder.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is the case? my guesses are that i need to get a better quality usb hub, or that i might have to get a powered hard drive altogether rather than trying to power it with the hub.
    Thanks

The hard drive won't show up in finder or disk utility, however i can see it in airport utility.
You would not expect it to show up in disk utility .. it does not work on network drives.
Finder may or may not be able to see it.
If the airport utility is showing the drive you have some possibility.
Did you GUID partition the drive .. or is it still MBR.. ie if it was originally formatted for PC it will be MBR and won't work.. so put it on the Mac again and change the GUID partition.. I would also set a smaller partition size.. the internal drive of the TC is partitioned though you cannot see them.. put a first partition less than 1TB and see how it goes.
In finder.. don't forget ML has issues with network drive.. make sure you tick all the extras in finder preferences.. and if the drive won't mount try to do it manually.. go .. connect to server.
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.. where you use the actual name or IP.
Also is the power supply for the hub at least 2A preferably more.. so the hub is powered but the disk is not powered??

  • External hard drive is not mounting via hub

    Hi mates,
I bought LaCie D2 Quadra external hard drive and when I connected it to LaCie Huby firewire port it would not mount at all, but when I connected the hard drive straight to my MacBooks firewire port it mounted nicely.
what could be the problem that its not mounting with the hub?
    Message was edited by: tarts

Just tested with USB and it works.
oh.. just remembered that I sync my iPod through one of the Hubys fw ports, so I guess that ports are OK.
Maybe I have a faulty fw cable?

  • Do i need a powered usb hub to connect my external hard drive and printer to my airport extreeme

I tried a usb hub from Belkin that is not powered. Is this why I cannot get my hard drive to work on my Airport Extreme?

I am assuming that you are using the newer "square" version of the AirPort Extreme, not the older "round" version.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered. I have had to use a powered USB hub with any type of hard drive that I've ever used on the Extreme, even if the drive had its own power supply.
You might want to also check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or MS-DOS FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work at the AirPort Extreme.

  • External Hard Drive using 7 port hub

Not sure if anyone has had this problem but I thought I'd mention it in case it helps someone.
I have a 20 inch iMac (Intel) 500 G, 2 G RAM operating system OS X 10.5.8 and purchased Seagate GoFlex Desk 2 T External Hard Drive to use to store pictures and video etc., I also have an IOMEGA eGo 500 G portable hard drive which I have been using as my backup hard drive with Time Machine for a couple of years with no trouble. It is connected to a Nexxtech 7 port Hub which has its own power.
I figured I could plug my Seagate hard drive into my 7 port hub along with the IOMEGA and life would be good. NOT!
For some reason when Time Machine would start a backup it would 'hang up' i.e. the indicator would show Time Machine was working when it really wasn't. I couldn't force quit and in fact, I couldn't even shut down the computer (I was forced to hold the button at the back of the computer for 4 seconds to force it to shut down). I tried different arrangements of connecting the hard drives until I found the only one that works and that is (get ready!) not to connect any hard drive to the 7 port hub. Each hard drive now uses one of my USB slots at the back of the machine directly. All I can use the 7 port hub for is to plug in my keyboard, printer connection and any USB sticks I am using (this now leaves me with no free USB slots at the back of the machine).
I'm not sure if I have a defective hub or what but it seemed to me to be a more complex problem than simply a lack of power since I had the same issues regardless of the arrangement.
I hate to tell you how long it took me to figure that out.

with time machine to work properlly it is a good idea to have it connected to the computer directally.... also make sure the hub works on antoher comtpuer to narrow down if its the hub or the usb port > so try other port onthe imac as well
    SMC + PRam as well.

I have purchased itunes tv series, movies and music and have transferred them onto an external hard drive and tried to play them on my tv on a media hub.  The file will not load.  Is there some form of blocking by itunes or another p[roblem and how do I fix it?

You can't fix it.  iTunes bought content is DRM protected. so it can only be played on authorized devices.  i.e devices associated with the apple Id used to purchase the content.  Its copyright protection that the rights owners demand.
Circumventing it, is illegal in most countries, and as such cannot be discussed here.  If you want to play the content you'll need to connect your computer directly to your TV, or use some other device you can authorize for iTunes content such as an iPad, iPhone , iPod touch or Apple Tv.

  • External Hard Drive will not mount through USB Hub.

The Hard Drives are ok. If I plug them directly into my iMac (3 weeks old and update to 10.7.1) they mount fine. But they wont show up if I plug them into my USB Hub that is plugged into my iMac. I have had THREE USB Hubs and all of them have had problems. I have USB flash drive that sometimes shows up and a iPhone that will show up in iTunes when I mount it through the hub.
Is there a program (in the system or share/freeware) that will force the Mac to scan and mount them?
    thanks - Otto.

The issue is the EHD's are not getting enough power. Going forward never buy EHD's unless they have their own power supply. I would recommend either connecting directly to the iMac or replacing them with higher quality devices. The EHD's I like to recommend are:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
All are similar in quality and features. Yes they're probably more money that what you paid however they're worth it. I use the LaCie's however I wouldn't hesitate to use the OWC or G-Tech's either.

  • Could I use a USB hub to connection both a printer and an external hard drive to the time capsule?

I am planning on purchasing a new router.  The Time Capsule looks amazing.  However, I have Macs and PC's in my how.  So, I need to know if I can connect a printer (for all computers) and external hard drive (for the PC's) by way of a USB hub on the Time Capsule.  I've read that you can do this with the Air-Extreme.

    Couple of comments:
You will need to use a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to the USB port on the Time Capsule
The hard drive for use with the PCs will not be compatible for use with the Time Capsule if it is currently formatted for Windows NTFS, which it likely may be if you have been using with the PCs.
Same info applies to the AirPort Extreme.
The following hard drive formats would be supported:
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    MS DOS FAT32

  • External Hard Drive (USB3.0) only works through USB2.0 hub

For quite a while now some of my external hard drives have not worked when directly plugged into my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012 running 10.8.5). They work perfectly when plugged into a USB hub and then into the macbook but not directly to the mac. Standard small USB flash drives work fine straight in to the macbook, the real problem appears to be USB 3.0 hard drives. These will not show up on desktop or disk utility unless I plug them in via a USB hub (which is USB2.0). The hard drive format doesn't seem to be important, currently my Mac OS Extended Time Machine backup HD is only working through USB hub, and my MyPassport WD external drive is NTFS and hasn't worked directly into the Mac for a while now.
Normally this is not a big issue, but when I am on the go it is useless to carry a USB hub around along with a MyPassport hard drive! In addition, there are times, such as when backing up, that I want the speeds offered by USB3.0 from my macbook to my hard drive.
What could be the problem? I run NTFS for Mac OSX, not sure if that would cause an issue with the direct connection.
Please help, this one is grinding my gears!
    Thanks

WD Black 2TB back in summer sold for about $179 and excellent choice.
Very important as to what controller you get and what it supports, besides Mac Pro 2010, 64-bit mode drivers.
With 4 drives you may or may not want a card+case that is Port Multiplier.
To use 4 drives you may want 4-port SATA.
The ideal might be two PCIe cards and two cases, so your data and backup are not on same controller and case. Or not.

  • External Hard Drive and USB Hubs

I need some help. I have a 320GB External Hard Drive which uses 2 USB Ports. I also have an external keyboard and mouse, using USB. I first purchased a 'passive' USB hub and the Mac was unable to recognize the External Hard Drive. So, I purchased a USB Hub powered by AC. The External Hard Drive lights up, but the Computer does not recognize it. Is there a recommended USB Hub that will allow the external hard drive to make the hand shake with my MacBook ?

Check with the drive manufacturer to determine if there is an alternative power source for the drive. I've never liked self powered drives and that so many made today require two USB ports is just one of the reasons why.
