Hard Drive I/O Errors

Hi,
I've bought a new iMac G5 2.0 17" about two months ago. It worked fine for the first month and then started to hangup randomly for a few minutes. I can move the mouse cursor but it shows the spinning "beachball" but the computer stays frozen .. After a few minutes everything is back to normal.. I noticed that I have the following error messages in the system.log after the hangup occures: "/dev/disk0s3: I/O Error" .. I thought it's dying hard drive, so I backed up the whole system to my external firewire drive, reinstalled Tiger on the internal drive (with complete format and zeroing the drive) and contionued using the computer.. It seemed OK for a few days until last night.I was browsing the internet and at the same time iTunes was running when the computer hung up again .. only this time it remained frozen fo about 40 minutes. I've had to reset it by holding the power button.. After the restart it won't boot from the internal hard drive anymore.. It goes to the at the gray screen with the spinning circle and stays there forever.
I booted from my backup firewire hard drive and checked the internal drive using Disk Utility's First Aid.. after a few checks Disk Utility reported that the disk was repaired.Anyway the iMac still couldn't boot from it.. I also experienced the same hangup and the same error showed in the system.log while running from the firewire hard drive: "/dev/disk1s11: I/O Error" (disk1s11 is my firewire harddrive). So the issue couldn't be hard drive related... I ran Apple Hardware Test several times and it reports everything is OK. I'm new to Macs so I don't know what to do at this point. Should I send the computer for repair? Or could this be a software related issue?

Seems as the harddisk of my new 20" imac just passed away. Does not show up, neither from diskutility nor diskwarrior, and there's this very ugly sound from the harddisk that definitely shows something is wrong. The apple hardware test showed no problems though… This must be a new record, I have had to reinstall the system at least 5 times, initialize the disk two times, and now there's nothing to initialize anymore. All of it in less than two months (this being the second iMac they send me, the first one had a defective superdrive).

I have recently purchased Toshiba 1TB hard drive and I set it up and I was able to transfer all my files onto it such as my music, photos, documents. I was able to format the Toshiba hard drive on my old Mac and copy the Adobe Suite onto it. I followed instructions to format the hard drive to the Retina Mac through Disk Utility, but I still can see the external drive on the new Mac.
Any suggestions…?

SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.

External Hard Drive Input/Output error

I recently started having problems with an external hard drive setup that I did not have problems with prior to upgrading to 10.5.5 and trying to setup the drive to be compatible with Time Machine.
The hard drive enclosure that I have has 2 bays for two SATA drives. I have used this enclosure without any problems until I tried to get 1 drive to act as the backup drive for Time Machine and the other to be storage. I formatted them using Drive Genius. I used the option for GUILD or GUIL which it said was the better format for using with Time Machine.
The first problem I ran into since upgrading and reformatting the drives is I got an "input/output" error the first couple times I connected the drive via USB to my Mac. I could still use the drives but I got weird errors every once in a while like "input/output error" or "device was not ejected properly" even though the device had not been unplugged.
Now the drives will not mount using OS 10.5.5. The drives show up when I open Disk Utility, but I cannot get them to mount. I have ran Disk Utility First Aid, and it says the drives are fine. There is one error that shows up when I run the "Repair Disk" feature. It reads "Invalid content in Journal". But Disk Utility also says "The volume was repaired successfully".
I have seen some posts when I do a search in google about this issue and it seems this is a known issue. Every suggestion I see says to insert your Tiger DVD and reformat the drive using that and the problem will be solved. The only problem with that is I have a lot of important files on the drive that I cannot lose. I had the files backed up until I moved them to the new drive a while back. Now I do not have a backup because I was in the process of switching to bigger drives and erased the old drives after doing so because everything was working fine.
I am hoping someone out there may have some suggestions (other than erasing the drive) to get my dives to mount so I can transfer the data off to another drive and reformat after.

Do you think that would work better than Drive Genius? I bought Drive Genius 2 and it does not even see the drives when they are plugged in unlike Disc Utility which can see the drives but cannot mount either one.
Maybe this following post I made to a different questions may help. The data on the drive is other buying another program for if it will work. I think my next step may be to go over to a friends place and try to mount the drives on his computer and transfer stuff off if they connect.

I have recently had the same mounting issue with my new external hard drive. I just purchased a new 750Gb Western Digital Sata drive and got everything transfered over to it. Immediately, I got an error saying that the drive had been ejected incorrectly even though it was still plugged in. I was a little curious. I restarted the computer (hard drive still plugged in via USB 2.0) and the drive showed up just fine. I plugged another 250Gb drive into the same case (2 bays) and the 250GB drive showed up just fine.
Well, I then noticed there was an OS upgrade available when I ran Software update so i ran it and when I rebooted the drives were gone. I can see the drives in Disc Utility, but they will not mount. Drive Genius cannot see either disc. Disc Utility says I need to repair the drives, but when I do it says they are fixed but they don not mount.
The problem really seems to be related to mounting USB external drives. I got ahold of 2 seperate external firewire hard drives and one shows up just fine while the other has the same problem (both work on other systems. I would try wiping the drives and reformatting but ALL MY stuff is on them and not everything has been backed up. Yuck! I have not tried connecting my hard drive to another Mac yet.
The drives being used are #1 Maxtor Maxline Plus II 250GB SATA/150 HDD 1.5b/s 7Y250m00654ra
and #2 Western Digital WD7500AACS WD Caviar GP Green Power drive.
I have another post similar to this and I have not received any feedback, but I have been doing my own searching and have found similar posts on the net.
Anybody have any clue what might be going on here? It really seems to be related to my upgrade.

Time Machine - External Hard Drive Read only error

Just recently got a Iomega 1TB MiniMax FireWire 800 USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Drive and used Time Machine to backup my computer. This was my first time using Time Machine and it successfully backed up 350 GBs. It continued to do backups every hour. When I turned my computer off and then turned it on the next day Time Machine wouldn't allow me to do a backup because it said the hard drive was read only. When I checked info it said it was read/write. I used disc utility to verify disc it said it could not verify disc do a disc repair. Disc repair failed and it said reformat disc. I erased the hard drive tried again and I got the same error message. The hard drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I searched this forum and the trouble shooting links and couldn't find anything on how to correct this. Any help on this problem would be appreciated.

This was posted in the Apple Discussions by V.K. I have only modified it slightly to be more generic.
The problem seems to be that 10.5.6 changes permissions on a file so that even the root user doesn't have write peivileges. I have no idea why they did this. The workaround suggested in [an]other post will probably work, too, but i did something less drastic. Instead of deleting the file I changed permissions on it, and it worked just fine. An added benefit is that the permission change seems to stick, so you don't have to delete the file every time you change a drive.
[Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt [enter] the following command:
sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx
The name of the file .xxxxxxxxxxxx is based on the MAC address of your computer and will be different for every computer. Put the name of the TM drive in the above and keep the quotes.
You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) which is normal.

Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

HP G62-b23SA - Imminent Hard drive failure - SMART Error (301)

My HP G62-b23SA reports a imminent hard disk failure. Hard disk test reports SMART Error (301). Advised to back up the system and contact HP support to enquire if Hard disk needs to be replaced or just needs repair. I have since backed up the system, should it be replaced?

The 301 Smart error would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced. You can check your warranty status Here.

Problems copying files from an external hard drive to MacBook (error code 36)

A little while ago I backed up some files on my iMac to an external hard drive (formatted in the Mac format). These were primarily office documents (PDF files, Microsoft Office) and some photos. The documents had orignally been copied to my iMac from a PC (via USB), whilst the photos were imported directly to the iMac. Having brought a MacBook Pro recently, I've been attempting to copy the data over. Unfortunately, I keep getting error code 36 when it attempts to copy the files over. I've tried skipping some of the files it gets stuck on, but it keeps finding more. This also happens when I am just trying to copy over a folder of photos. Another unusual thing that I noticed is that when I try to copy a folder containing just under 300 files, when it attempts to copy it says it is trying to write 1,500+ files... which I don't quite understand.
I've run the disk utility tool to check the hard drive, but it says it's fine. Prior to copying the data over to the external hard drive in the first place, it had been freshly formatted. Unfortunately, since this was the backup disk, I kinda need to save these files!
Does anyone know of any solutions out there that could help?

HT1449 move itunes library to external hard drive : fails with error -50

Following the steps to move my iTunes library to an external drive, everything is strating well, the copy beginns and after 2 hours of copy, I had this message failure with error -50.
My external hard drive is a timecapsule with enough free space.

I suggest you keep the entire iTunes folder to gether rather than moving only the media.
Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ foldder to teh external drive.
Launch iTunes and hold Option.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
This is all you need to do.

Moving data from one external hard drive to another ERROR-36

i got a new hp simplesave external hard drive, and i'm moving all my files from an older external hard drive (can't find brand name). Some of the files are bringing up error 36 which is something along the lines of can't read/write file. which is causing the file transfer to stop on that one file. there are a lot of damaged files so the file transferring is going very slowly. is there a way i can find out which files are bad ahead of time so i can get rid of them AND THEN transfer the files?

Well, since the MacBook with Tiger still has issues with the drive, I think it is some kind of hardware problem related to the external drive. I have numerous USB and FireWire drives connected (probably too many), and I've had no issues with Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard makes my older Intel iMac run better than when it was new.
Make sure you try connecting the drive to a separate power outlet, if it is connected to a power strip. It is also possible the drive's power supply is failing; that can cause the the improper disconnect message to come up, because the drive inside is not getting sufficient power. That is why you need to try the hard drive in a different case, or using the USB adapter, to eliminate possibilities.
Also, I still don't know if this drive is USB or FireWire, but be sure to try it with no other devices connected, in case there is some interference between devices.
One more thing you can try to rule out a problem with your currently installed system. Start up using the Snow Leopard installation disc; insert disc and restart with the C key held down. When you get to Installer's first screen, go up to the menu bar and, under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility.
At this point, you can just leave the iMac alone for a while to see if the drive gets ejected. If it does not, try making a Disk Image of the external drive and saving the image file to the iMac's internal drive. If that works, there may be some issue with your current installation (and you have a backup of the data). If it fails, then I think you have confirmed that the problem is with the external drive, not the iMac or Snow Leopard.

Formating Western Digital External Hard Drive gets an error

I just bought a 500GB Western Digital External Hard Drive (uses Firewire 400), primarily for storing HD iMovie and Final Cut Express files. When I checked the iMovie support, it recomends to format the external hard drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). I opened Disk Utility, selected the hard drive (My Book) and followed the steps to both erase and reformat it. I have gotten an error numerous times that says:

+Disk can't be remounted+
Something like that. I don't know why I'm having this problem, but any help would be very appreciated. I just bought a Canon HV20 and want to get to use it soon...

FYI: I have an Intel iMac and Mac OS X 10.5.2, along with any of the latest updates for it.

Try doing it this way:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Hard Drive "Input Output" Error When Attempting to Format

A friend just gave me a nice PowerBook that seems to be in need of a fresh OS and when attempting to format the hard drive I am getting an "Input Output" error. Any suggestions to overcome this issue and format the drive?

I'm having similar issues on a white macbook (2006 model). I ran into some trouble with it about a month ago, when on booting up, it showed only the folder with a question mark. Booting up from the original grey install DVD worked, so I thought the problem was most likely a faulty hard drive.

So, I got onto ebay and picked up a deal and received my new hard drive yesterday. I swapped out the original 80GB with 320GB, only to find the same input/output error described by the OP, here (also in a couple of other Apple discussion posts - see below).
Disk utility shows the new hard drive to be 2.3TB in size! Should be 320GB - but, this is also what others have described. See e.g.,:

First I thought it looks like a problem with the SATA connector within my notebook, but it shouldn't be case as the hdd sits tight and the old one still works. Moreover I tried to change SATA settings in BIOS from "AHCI" to "Compatibility" in case of a driver fault, but this also didn't fix the issue.
For now I have connected the new hard drive with the SATA2USB adaptor and do some writing on it via dd. In this case, the errors do not occur at all.
The disk now gives me errors even if connected via USB. So I assume it is a hardware defect. The Western Digital Drive Check tools won't boot, but, I think these errors are more or less unambiguous

We call it case or drive hum. And it seems like a harmonic clash of two devices, or the 2nd hard drive causing the case itself (metal case).
There are shock absorbent washers on the side metal door.
Drive is attached and firmly installed and the latch on the back is securely in down and lock position.
And of course it still happens.
Me, I'd pull the old inefficient 250GB drive with 8MB cache, the Seagate 7200.9s that some shipped with were horrible performance and noise).
What I do with drive is run it through WD Lifeguard in Windows a couple times (Extended Test, full format instead of quick).
Some people sought out drive sled anti-vibration washers to fit to the sled (can't change the height though in order to fit properly).
Turn off "allow drives to spin down when not in use" if on.

Hard drive and critical error messages

Hello, I have suddenly rec'd numerous hard drive errors "hard drive doesn't respond to system commands" and critical error messages "damaged hard drive clusters detected. private data is at risk." "system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE/SATA hard disks" along with other error messages. I have a toshiba satellite A505 over a year old and never had a problem until now. Was just surfing the web on a retail site and started getting all these pop-ups. desktop is missing most icons, favorite list gone. not computer savvy when it somes to figuring the error messages out. Any help appreciated. Should I take it in somewhere to get fixed? Please help.

Yes, Katy. Be sure to back up all your important files. The machine you get back will most likely have all of your pictures, Xmas cards, favorites, contacts and so forth missing.

Hard drive "I/O Error" - is disk dead?

I have a PB G4 15" 1.25 GHz (FW 800) 1GB ram. My 80GB Hitachi hard drive suuposedly died on me a few weeks ago. I have booted up on the leopard start up disk to try disk utility, and booted into single user mode, and used fsck -f. Both processes returned similar errors - "incorrect block count for file 1f5_data", and "volume header needs minor repair". After about thirty seconds to one minute of trying to repair the disk it said "I/O error", and appears to try and repair again, but repeats the I/O error again and again, eventually becoming unusable.
I have a copy of disk warrior, and an external HD. I loaded leopard onto the external, and used DiskWarrior to rebuild the bad (Tiger) drive. Diskwarrior was able to rebuild the drive and give me a preview disk which allowed me to recover all of my data and copy it to the external drive. At this point I was ready to reformat the bad drive and start over, and here is where my problem is. I cannot format/repair/do anything to my PB HD except for rebuild it with DiskWarrior. DiskWarrior cannot replace the directly after it has rebuilt it either.
Does this mean my hard-drive is crashed/dead/unusable? The hard drive obviously still works in some capacity, but why cannot I not reformat it without this input/output error? What can I do to get my HD back to working condition? Thanks for any help.

Hi, allen8u, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Yes, it does sound as though your drive has failed. Apparently its read/write head(s) can read but not write data. I would replace the drive, since it will be hard to have much faith in it even if it does begin working properly again.
