Hard drive image moving on screen

I have been running on Macs since '84 and I have no clue if it is possible to have the hard drive image from moving from its place after an update and to have it not move
  Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks Glenn,
Hopefully by applying the snap to grid will solve my problem.
I noticed though that when you go to the View tab and then to the Arange By tab I can not uncheck all. The item in the tab that is applied as in view arange by name will sort the items by name and will stay that way. I am not able to have it uncheck all

  • NetInstall from configured hard drive image - is the OS hardware-specific?

    Hello.
I deal with the installations, maintenance, etc. of about 30 computers — it's a mix of Intel iMacs, Mac Pros and G5s. About 75% of these machines in configured in one way (including applications, etc.) and the other 25% another way. Other than the OS (as some are Intel, some aren't), there's not a big different between these machines (again, with respect to the installed applications, configurations, etc.). So, I'm looking at starting to use NetInstall of future installations and upgrades and I'd like to use hard drive images of base machine installs (OS, applications, base users, settings) and I'm wondering — is the install of the OS (10.5.x) hardware-specific? Do I need to create an image for specific hardware (not including Intel vs PPC)? For example, if I create the image from an Intel iMac, can I use that image for installing a Mac Pro? I'm not sure how hardware-specific the original OS install is (if it only installs files for the machine it's being installed on, or if it installs all files for use on various machines)?
Some advice here would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Provided the Build of Mac OS X 10.5.x is the same or newer than that of your newest hardware then technically it is hardware-independent in that case.
For example 10.5.6 (9G55) will support any model of Mac (meeting Leopard's requirements) which shipped prior to its release - however there are some cases where you may be missing multi-touch demo videos if you didn't start your build from a system containing these. The 10.5.6 (9G66) retail DVD contains these and would serve as a good base. 10.5.6 (9G2141) would support all currently shipping Macs as of March 2nd 2009.
10.5.x is a fully Universal system so it will support any PowerPC-based Mac (meeting Leopard's requirements).

  • Photshop CS6 not showing as `open-with` for desktop/external hard.drive images

Hi, I have CS6 and am using Photoshop, but when I try to open any image on my desktop  the `open with` option dosent include Photoshop CS6, only other Adobe applications; even when I browse I can only find the Adobe systems file, with the .exe doc; I have a lot of images to edit, preferably without having to open Photoshop and individually open them from their folders; any advice on how to make Photshop CS6  `open-with`-able for any desktop/external hard drive images?

Thanks for raising this issue. I found the answer at: http://www.flickr.com/groups/photoshopsupport/discuss/72157630067784368/. Hope it works. I have done it but I believe I must now reboot before trying it.

  • Why did my iTunes music re-copy to my mac hard drive after moving them to an external?

I moved my iTunes to an external hard drive (following directions) but most of my files got re-copied to my computer.  I have my preferences changed to have my library etc. in my external hard drive and moved all my other files to a desktop folder until I could confirm that everything copied over correctly.
However, now it appears that most (but possibly not all) of my music is again on my computer's hard drive.  I don't know why this happened, or what steps I should take to fix it.
Bonus, now everything is duplicated, taking up twice as much room.
    Thanks.

This appears to have worked, but I how can I be sure?  If I transfer to the recycle bin, I have to permanently delete the files because they are too large.  I did not do this.  The files seem to be on the external hard drive.

  • Only the hard drive image showing up upon start up

When I started up my computer today for the first time ever all I saw was a larger image of my hard drive located in the middle of a gray screen. Had to click on it to proceed to the desk top. Has this every happened to anyone else? This is the first time for me and I am curious as to what caused that.

This happens if you hold the option key while booting - it invokes the startup manager so that if you have a bootable external disk you can choose that to boot from just this one time: as you only have the internal disk that's all that showed. Possibly you hit the option key by accident: anyway it's quite harmless.

  • Pavillion dv7 new hard drive goes to black screen with cursor

A couple weeks ago my computer suddenly started going realy slow so I rebooted, and it wouldnt boot. Just gave me an error in the upper left corner (I dont remember the exact message). Anyway I took it to a family fried who fixes computers he said the hard drive probably had a bad boot sector. We couldnt boot to it, but he could read from it by plugging it into his own computer like an external.
Anyway we got the new hard drive in (upgraded from 320g to 500g) as well as the old one with the intention of making it a slave drive.  I tried putting in a windows 7 install disk (originally had vista), when I turn it on first I see the hp splash screen, then it says "windows is loading files" and goes to a "windows is starting" splash screen. After that its just a black screen with an arrow cursor and doesnt appear to be doing anything else.
Any idea what the problem might be? Is it just trying to install to the wrong drive? Or could something more serious be wrong like the processor or motherboard that would mean the whole thing is trash now?

  • PSE 9, external hard drives and moving to new computer

I had an old desktop running PSE 3, yep...3, and my husband bought me a new laptop. Laptop's operating system would not run PSE 3, so I purchased PSE 9, reconnected all my "misplaced" photo files, loaded PSE 9 on the old desktop and converted all files to 9. NOW, I am ready to move everything to the laptop and am unsure what would be best.
I have a large collection of photos and have always stored them on an external harddrive that I just plug in when needed. I purchased a second external hard drive that I am now using for backup ONLY, so I have 2 external HD's - (1) storage and (2) backup.
New laptop has PSE 9 installed and has a some newer photos in the organizer that are presently stored on the laptop harddrive. I have not done any tagging on the laptop because I didn't want to complicate matters. I now want to import my old catalog photos (stored on the external hard drive), including PSE tags. The part that causes me confusion is that I want to continue storing the photos on the external hard drive where they are. It seems counter productive to import, make new files on the laptop, then export back to where they were all along.
Gosh, I hope I'm making sense here. Anyone have any suggestions - simplest of terms, please, regarding how to get access to my photos and tags moved to the laptop if the fewest and easiest steps?

Ken, I am struggling with this. I have renamed the external harddrive with my photos, found the catalog and copied it to the external with the photos and have connected this external hard drive to the laptop (new computer).
I am now at step 5. of your first response. I have browsed and found the catalog, now my only two options are new or convert. I don't think I need to convert because I have already converted to from 3 to PSE 9 and don't really think it's a "new" catalog.
I need an "outline for dummies", please.  If I didn't have so darn many photos, I'd be tempted to just start over. If it helps, I have written tag info to my files.
Thank you for all your patience and help.

  • MacBook Pro Hard Drive Crash? Grey Screen

My MacBook Pro A1278 started running a bit slow today. It appeared to lock up, so I decided to restart. Upon restart after the chime, I now only get the grey screen - first with the apple symbol and processing circle, and then later the "no admittance" symbol. No cables or external components are connected.
I started by trying the boot to the disc in safe mode but it wouldn't boot up. I received "cannot mount root, errno = 19".
I then proceeded to reset the NVRAM / PRAM. Still, no boot up.
I then attempted to repair the disc with repair utility using command + R. The disc is "verified" per disc utility but I receive the error "Error: Live file system repair is not supported" when trying to repair the full disc. When trying to repair the MacBook partition I receive the error that "Error: Disc Utility can't repair this disk... disk, and restore your backed-up files".
I have a time machine backup but unfortunately it's from several months back. Any suggestions on how I may be able to recover my more recent data? Is the disc toast? Would a reinstall of Mac OS X Snow Leopard help? I was running Maverick before the crash but don't have a physical copy of the recent OS updates.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your disk drive is either badly corrupted or is dying. I suggest you try:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you are unable to do this, then:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Hard drive broken or the screen - how do i know?

my ipod 80 Gb classic is causing me a headache!!!!!!!
I put an album on it the other day that i got off itunes, then the screen went white. It will turn off. I can't even get the apple logo to appear. Have tried to reset many times but that's not making any difference. It is making a very quiet clicking sound too. I took it to a computer repair place that reckon it's the hard drive and just buy a new one. But when i have it connected to my computer i am still able to access the content on it. What's wrong with it, any clues?

The two symptoms I've underlined make it sound as though the iPod is "stuck". In other words, it's trying to do something but can't and because it can't "finish" what it's trying to do, you can't get it to respond.
If it's still like that now, try leaving it unplugged for at least 24 hours. Do not try to charge it or "leave it on charge". Eventually, whatever it's trying to do will drain the battery and it will turn off. Once this happens, it can no longer do what it's trying to do.
Then - and only then - plug it into power to charge up. For the first 30 minutes nothing will appear to happen. Hopefully, then it will power up and in this situation, the very first thing the iPod should do, is to reset everything to a known condition and this should allow your iPod to function correctly. If you get this far, make sure you leave it on charge until it's full. If you unplug it too soon, it will simply run out of power.

  • Lost hard drive image on 2.8 Ghz iMac

I have a 2009 27 inch, 2.8 GHz, i7 iMac with a 1TB hard drive and Mac O Rama in Reno installed  OWC 960 GB SSD drive with the data doubler adapter. The iMac now has internal two drives. The optical drive was removed. I was using the SSD drive for booting.  This has been running just fine for the last five weeks.
I have two external backup drives, one for SuperDuper and one for Time Machine.
Today I setup Time Machine to backup the SSD drive to the internal 1 TB hard drive.  After a couple of hours I came back and the screen was black.  Held the start button down to shut every thing off.  Then restarted and the SSD drive does not show up. It restarted from the original hard drive.
Ran Disk Utility on the the startup disk, nothing.  Then shut down waited for a minute and restarted with the "option" key held down, the SSD did nor appear.  Ran Disk Warrior v4.4 and still no SSD.
    What to do next?

    Hi
    As above.
But if You want to squees in eg 3hour on a standard 4.7Gb DVD disk.
One way is to use Roxio Toast™ and the function put in the movie anyhow.
This will do the work but to a rather reduced quality.
There are other programs that can do this too but Toast™ does it as good as
one can anticipate and to a fair price.
Alt. DVD Studio Pro in FinalCutStudio bundle
ForMac Devideon™ but then You'll buy an extra DVD-burner too. (not sold separately
    as I'm aware of)

  • Partitioning hard drive and moving pics

I have a single hard drive and the OS (win7) and all my data & pics are on a single partition.
I want want to create a new partition and move my data and pics onto it, leaving the OS on the original partition.
Will Lightroom "know" that I've moved the folders and will the LR catalogue be intact?
    Many thanks.

No, Lightroom is not aware of any moves of your photos. What you need to do is move the photos using your operating system and then you would reconnect in Lightroom using these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
Unless you have some non-Lightroom reason for partitioning your hard drive, I guess I would advise you to not even bother. Of course, you may have non-Lightroom reasons for partitioning...

  • Realtime mirrored hard drive image

here is what i want to do: i have an external firewire drive that i created a partition on that is the same size as my internal hard drive. i want that drive to be a mirror image of my internal drive. i dont want time machine, that keeps backups, i want a realtime backup, so if i delete a file on my internal drive, it will also be erased from the external drive. id also like some way for the external drive to synchronize to the current state of my internal drive when i have been working with the drive unplugged and then plug it back in.
i hope this is clear... is this possible at all?

Not a good idea. First, you cannot add an existing startup volume to a RAID set. You would have to erase your startup volume, create the RAID, then reinstall OS X. Second, an external drive is slower than in internal drive, so the RAID would function only as fast as the slower drive in the RAID set. Third, the external drive would have to be permanently connected and operational in order to boot from it. You would be better off simply using the external drive as a backup for the internal drive.

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.

  • Kernel panic, restored hard drive, stuck on loading screen....

yesterday i had a kenel panic occur when i booted up my Macbook Pro, i tried to boot to an SMC, tried to boot to a PRAM, finally booted to the install disk.  Went to disk utility, erased the hard drive and restored it to a Time Machine Back up done 2 days ago.  Turned on the computer, now it's stuck on the loading screen, but no kernel panic message.....booted again to the install disk, verified and repaired HD, and got the message the HD seems to be okay.  WEnt to reboot and stuck again on loading screen.  Help me get to my computer......please!!!
Let me know if you need further information, would love any help i can get.....thank you!!

a brody, thanks so much for the advice.  quick question on the particulars: this is what i am assuming you mean to do:
    1. go back to disk utility from the install disk and wipe the hard drive again.
    2. run the install disk again and just try to install the base operating system from that disk
    3. see if there are any problems from that point
    4. diagnose problems
is this correct, or should i be installing the base operating system from another point (i.e. my external hard drive time machine back up, somewhere else in the Disk Utility options, etc.)
    Thanks again for the help.

  • When mac wakes from sleep, the hard drive wakes but the screen is black

It's a problem I've been having off and on for quite a while with my ~2010 MacBook Pro. Sporadically/randomly, when I wake my computer from sleep or turn it on, the status light turns on and the hard drive makes sounds like it's on, but the screen stays black. The only way to get it on again is to manually hold the power button to shut if off and start it up again. Sometimes, the same issue reoccurs when I restart it and I have to manually restart it 5 or 6 times until it finally turns on normally, or I just get tired and give up. I've had everything done at the genius bar, from getting a new hard drive to running diagnostic testing. Nothing works. Any suggestions??
