Hard drive info...

Hi
I just bought a used 1.5 GHz 12in. powerbook Model A1104 and may have been slightly swindled. Without getting into too much detail I was wondering if the 'Travelstar 60Gig 5400' was the original drive ...the date on it is JUN-05! Does this make sense?
I believe it just died on me (makes a nice rattling noise when I shake the drive in my hand) and I'm hoping to replace it with one of the Seagate 'Momentus' units.
Thanks for the help.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It is possible what you bought was one of the last remaining 12" Powerbooks in the store that has been sitting on the shelf. MacBooks pretty much replaced the 12" Powerbooks back in May. And rather than release a 12" MacBook Pro, Apple only released a 15" and 17" MacBook Pro, and waited until the MacBook was released in May to replace the 12" Powerbook. According to Specifications link above, the 12" Powerbook was last actually updated on:
M9691LL/A http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG4_15-inch_Double-LayerSD.html Oct 1995
M9690LL/A M9691LL/A http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG4_12-inch_15GHz.html Jan 1995
As you notice M9691LL/A was actually on both the Jan 1995 and Oct 1995 releases of the 12" Powerbook.
And there was a 60 GB but only on the M9690LL/A
Check the model number and see which one it is.

  • Displaying hard drive info in finder window?

when I opened a window in Finder in previous OS, it used to display info at the bottom, like how many files were contained in that window/folder, and remaining hard drive space.  Now, in 10.7, I don't see that info anymore.  While not necessary, it is useful sometimes to quickly see how much drive space is available, and how many files in the folder, etc.  Is there an option to get that info displayed again?
    Thanks in advance!

Choose to show the status bar from the View menu. You may need to show the toolbar to get this option.

  • Why is my Hard drive info not displaying the correct availability

I can open "About This MAC" and click on more info it lets me check my hard disk usage under storage. It shows I have 81 GB available of 499.76. However it shows 98 GB of Backups, what could that be?
Now when I actually right click on Macintosh HD it says I have 437.22 GB available of 499.25 GB. I just don't understand, and I don't believe either is right. If I right click my user file in MAcintosh HD it says I have 165 GB on disc. What gives?

That's normal. OS X Lion and Mountain Lion, when you have turned on Time Machine, create "local snapshots" on the hard drive of portable Macs. See > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
One of the "features" of local snapshots is that Disk Utility detects them as used space and Finder detects them as free space. That's the reason why you are seeing different free spaces depending on the application you use. There's nothing wrong in making local snapshots

  • Saving hard-drive info

Given my problem explained at lenght in "weird pressure point a.k.a. ibook death touch" If ultimatelly I had to replace my ibook or simply my hard drive, is there a way I can hook it up to my powerbook and take off the files that are on my harddrive that i need? I don't mean in terms of opening up pb and installing the ibook harddrive in it, but to connect them via dual male firewire(I saw this in store it was $50, is that the best price out there?) or crossover cat 5 or something. The ibook is not booting into OS at the moment. I dont want to lose this very important info.
Any info on data recovery would be appreciated.

Ethernet cable will work, but slowly. Firewire is fast.Firewire target disk mode. with firewire you 1st start up bad computer while holding down the T key, wait until you have the firewire symbol showing on the bad comp screen, then you connect the 2 comps together via firewire. make sure good comp is already on. Then the bad comp icon should show up on good comp as a external device. now you can drag anything over to good comp that you want. As far as a firewire cable goes, you can get them online cheap enough from site like www.cablestogo.com or any other site like that. get a duel male 6 pin plug.

  • How can I transfer my old laptop hard drive info onto a partition on my new macbook pro

is this possible? i want to transfer my windows OS with all my files etc onto a partition on my new macbook pro, but i dont know if i can do it or how to go about it.
any help would be really appreciated.
could it be as simple as using the macbook as a hard drive plugged into my laptop via USB and dragging and dropping the C:/ drive into the available space?

If you want to run Windows then you need to install a new Windows copy.
I'd assume your copy is OEM and tied to the laptop unless you bought retail copy and won't use the laptop again (or sell it with Windows OS to someone else).

  • Q2 of 3: Hard Drive info transfer

I've seen a few posts as to the process of the upgrade but I'm a bit unsure as to a few details.
    - First I am to clone my existing hard drive onto an external firewire disk.
    - then install the new hard disk in the imac, format it and install the operating system
    - How then am i supposed to return the information from the clone to the computer?
    - If I 're-clone' the hard disk from the external backup, will I not upset the newly installed operating system?
    - or am I to reformat the hard disk and then boot from the external disk and clone onto the newly formatted but informationless disk?
A long winded question. My apologies.

I'm also keen to have your opinion on this hard drive

It looks like an ATA-100 and I thought it would therefore be compatible (I think ovation installed this on his system) yet a reviewer stated that it was an SATA. is he mistaken?

  • Rebuilding Computer Hard Drive Info

I have a MacBook Pro that was backed up to my Time Capsule.  I moved and forgot the Time Capsule in storage, so I stopped backing up the computer (stupid me!).  The hard drive was physically damaged and could not be retrieved, so I bought a new hard drive and reloaded basic programs.  I have been backing up the new drive to an external hard drive now.
I just got the Time Capsule back and want to combine the programs and files I had backed up before, with the programs and files I now have on the computer.
    HELP!!!

Move the stuff from the time capsule to a folder on the desktop, or place them in their respective folders, and then back up

  • Where do I find my Hard Drive info ? i.e. (5400 or 7200)

I am looking in System Profiler and can't find any info about my HD.
Under ATA it says there is no ATA installed.
I have a macbook pro 17" 500gb but I need to know if it is 5400 or 7200.
    Thanks

It's not on your Mac. Find the model number per my previous info then get the spec sheet from the drive manufacturer's web site. If you did not specially order the 7200 RPM drive then you have a 5400 RPM drive. You can open the drive compartment and see if the information is printed on the drive's data label.
As I said here and before if you have a stock model the drive is 5400 RPM.

  • Hard drive info for missing 2 GB space

    Dear Mac users,
I recently bought a mac book which I am very excited about. Being a PC user for a long time I like to have control over the hard disk space which somehow is clear with Windows XP.
My first observation with my new Mac book is the folder size and its location. When I clicked Get Info for the Macintosh HD it showed 17.22 GB as total used space. Then I selected each folder inside the Macintosh HD which sum up to become 15.2 GB. Now I am surprised where does the 2.02 GB go? I believe its some hidden files. Could someone point me to the direction where I can get more info about this? I want to know where files are stored and which files are very important for mac OS. Will look forward for your suggestions.
    Thank you.

Yes its hidden folders and if you want to look at those download onyX

  • Putting old info in new hard drive

I bought a black macBook and I was wondering if I wait until i can't hold anything more in my hard drive and change it 8 months from now, is there an easy way to import my old hard drive info onto the new one in an easy way?

Even better than target disk mode is cloning it over with a program like SuperDuper. It will copy every last bit and byte on one hard drive over to another hard drive.
I did that with my iMac when I upgraded the stock 160GB drive to a 320GB unit. When the cloning was finished, everything was exactly as it was on the old drive, but with a whole lot more free space.

  • Hard Drive Trouble on New MacPro

Hello I have had my MacPro desktop for about 4 days now and am having some problems.
There is a 250 gb harddrive in my system and I when I get info the capacity shows as 232.57. I could have sworn it used to say 250gb.
Also on my desktop when I select view options and select "show item info" so it displays the hard drive info with the name it reads:
    232.57 GB,....14 GB free
The useful info is missing, I thought it was just truncated but who would care to see how much is remaining after the decimal. However, when I put in a custom desktop icon the information was back to: 232.57 GB, 219.25 free. I thought the problem was partly fixed but now it is displaying strangely again.
When I was installing photoshop it said I only had 4gb available on this drive.
Could someone please help me as to why this information is not displaying properly.
    Thanks

Thanks for the replies... I actually have the font size the smallest it goes. This info used to show up properly (I know that for sure). Like I mentioned earlier when I changed the icon to a custom one (cmd + I and paste the image on top of the previous icon in) The info returned to displaying properly, then after a few minutes it returned back to this "corrupted" state.
I have tried changing the icon again, toggle show file info on and off, restarting, adjusting the font size and even went to the extreme measures of reinstalling the OS sine this computer is still pretty empty being so new. Perhaps I am missing something here but this has me confused.
    Thanks

  • Several questions regarding an upgrade or replacement hard drive. Short dst failure error.

    Short-DST failure error
    1) I'm wondering if I can upgrade my hard drive to a 1TB and/or a 10,000rpm instead of the 500GB 7200rpm.  Would there be any problems for either upgrade? What effect will the rpm's have (5400/7200/10000) and how do I decide which is best for me? Can I change from HDD to SDD?  Can I change brands?  What size (in inches or cm) must the new hard drive be?  (See hard drive info below.)
    2) I believe I can access (and open) all my files on the failing 500GB HDD.  I want to install a second OS (Ubuntu) on my new hard drive, and I think the best way to do it would be to put Ubuntu on another partition. How would I go about copying my files to the new hard drive without losing any data and keeping my Win7 license?  How would/should I partition the new hard drive?  I can boot Ubuntu via a flash drive--can I make a Win7 recovery disk if Win7 won't boot?
    3) How urgent is getting my files off the short-dst error hard drive?

The following statement is copied from the  Maintenence & Service guide for the HP Pavilion dv6 Entertainment notebook. for your notebook.
"Supports all Serial ATA (SATA) 9.5-mm, 6.35-cm (2.50-inch) hard drives".
Any first generation SATA 9.5-mm, 6.35-cm (2.50-inch) hard drive should work without issue. I do recommend that you use the Tune-Up utility in the HP Support Assistant to update your BIOS.

  • How do I fix my internal hard drive stalling all the time??

    Hello,
I have a few hard drives attached to my G5.
2 external and one additional internal.
My issue is with my internal drive. It's a 750 GB drive.
if ever I return to my computer after being away for more than 15 minutes, every time I try to access something on that drive...meaning, I cause it to wake up. It stalls and I get the spinning beach ball forever. till most time I have to force shut down my computer.
So if I happen to be working in any softwares I use and try to open a file in that software that is on that drive ....it stalls. If i'm in my finder and happen to have a window open, 3-4 folders deep into that drive. when I click on a file in that window ....it stalls.
the only time it doesn't, is if I'm in finder and close all the windows and THEN click on that internal hard drives icon then it opens normally.
So it's ONLY when I try to wake the drive up does it stall. never have any issues when I'm just working away normally.
this is my second drive and had something like this going on with the previous drive too. when I was running. OS X 10.2-10.4
so I'm pretty sure it's not the drives that are faulty
Is this a known issue? are there any fixes??
if anyone can help that would be great thank you

Not a solution, but something to try.
In the Energy Saver preference window, do you have the "Put the hard disk....possible." checked or unchecked?
Try it the opposite of what you have selected now.
Also, do you have the same problem if the energy saver is moved to Never?
     Cheers, Tom
