Hard Drive is messed up

my hard drive has broken or is hurt in some way. can i get this repaired or do i have to buy a new ipod?

Why are you certain the hard drive is broken?
If you do need it serviced and it is out of warranty there are 3rd party sites that work on them, such as http://www.ipodmods.com or http://www.iresq.com or Google for more. They can either work on it or sell you a hard drive and you can DIY.

  • Hard drive got messed up, trying to recover my library

I had a horrible screw-up with the hard drive containing my iTunes media, and the backup got hosed as well. I was able to recover everything to a fresh drive, but a large number of the files had to be restored using a file utility. What that resulted in was a bunch of files with generic filenames (but with correct extensions). Some of these files are materials from iTunes Extras, others are movies, both from the iTunes store and from my own collection. I'm trying to find a way to re-link these generic files to their entries in the iTunes Library (which remained intact). Those entries are marked with an exclamation point. I've tried Spotlight searches keyed to the duration and file size of the movies in the library, but I never get any matches. A random selection of a movie will turn up something with an entry in the library, and at that point I can rename the file and point the iTunes library entry to it. But I can't understand why the Spotlight search won't work, since that's the best way for me to locate something specific when trying to recover my library file by file. I have no idea how I'll be able to deal with the iTunes Extras. A shame movies don't work with iCloud the way TV shows do. Any suggestions on how to handle this more efficiently?
And I have a fresh backup drive now, too.

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; only apps, books (not audiobooks), music, and t.v. shows (not movies).  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
If the above doesn't work, it is reported iTunes Support permitting a second download when asked nicely, but they are in no way obligated to do this. Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; select 'iTunes' in the first column; 'iTunes Store' in the second column; third column click 'Purchases, Billing & Redemption' and proceed from there.

  • Hard Drive really messed up... PLEASE HELP.

I just installed Tiger on this mac and i love it.... BUT, i think i might have accidentally ejected the 2nd hard drive and now it's not even recognizing in Disk Utility. My goal is to merge the two drives (if possible) so that the 40 gigs on the disk in use now can have another 60 gigs on the disk not in use. I think i need to reinstall the dead hard drive. When we purchased the computer second hand second drive was pretty much a slave and just a storage capacity. First things first though, i just want to get this other hard drive up and running and mounted properly on the desktop. Then i'd like to get it operational to the point of being used as a second drive and not a slave slush drive. Is this possible?... Anybody? PLEASE HELP......
PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Just installed Tiger

Hello! Does the drive show up at all in disk utility after you restart? Is the disk name "dimmed" or is the name in the list brightly black? Try starting from the Tiger install disc (with disc inserted restart and hold down the "c" key) and then at the language window go to the menu at the top and open disk utility from there and try and repair the disk.
When you installed the second disc did you install it jumpered "master", "slave" or "cable select"? The drive jumpered master goes on the end of the ribbon and the slave in the middle. Sometimes drives jumpered as cable select won't work.
Post back with additional info. Tom

  • My hard drive is messed up I was told I need to erase and reinstall lion, but I was wondering if I could reinstall maverick instead seeing as it is the most recent one out there. Ideas? tips?

I am running Mac OSX  10.7.5 I need to erase everything and reinstall. Should I reinstall Lion again or maverick?

    Ooops.
I upgraded my 10.6.8 system to 10.7.5. ..No problem, but my practice is to connect an ESATA dock to my macpro. install to the drive in the doc, use migration assistant to migrate my data and apps.   use the os in the doc for 2 weeks, if no issue then I delete the OS partiton in my Internal System Drive, do a carbon copy clone to the internal drive.
I just did the similar to upgrade to mavericks.   I installed to a new hardrive in my docking station.   (black widow esata dock).  I noticed 10.9.1 is slow stayed with 10.7.5 as my operating system.  now and then I would boot 10.9.1 fire up the console utility and fix the issues that made it slow....
Now I am at the "burn in stage" mavericks is now running fast and stable.   I'll use all my apps and if it does not break with the applications I run I will eventaully cc my 10.7.5 OS drive to the docking station, file the drive away.. and take my 10.9.1 drive in the doc and cc it to my internal system drive.
I always wipe out a partion when installing a new OS.  Zeroing out is a bit more thorough, you will know if your drive is junk... but it's overkill for me.
    I figured repartion is ok.
I'm 2 weeks away from doing a carbon copy clone from my 10.9.1 os drive in my dock to my internal drive.
by the way.. I am running Mavericks on a 8 core macpro 2,1.  I have a modified bootloader that has an arbitration layer EFI32 to/from EFI64 emulated.
    pretty cool.
And from new system standards, the old macpro stacks up pretty well:

  • Could this be a failed hard drive?

My daughter bought a new 20 GB gen 3 iPod in August of 2004. Now, when she turns it on, she gets the sad face along with a triangle and exclamation point. She has followed the steps in the Apple KB article for this scenario here and I have tried to help her - but all is to no avail.
A reset does not fix the problem. We have tried to restore it. But when the iPod is put into disk mode and attached to her computer, the iPod does not show up anywhere. It is not recognized by iTunes or iPod Updater. When the iPod is removed from the computer, the computer gives a message saying that the device was not recognized and asks if we want to re-initialize. (Curiously, it does not ask that while the iPod is attached.)
After the last attempt at this, we could hear the hard drive of the iPod trying to repetitively spin up, about every 3 or 4 seconds. It wouild spin up and stop, spin up and stop, etc. At least, it sure sounded like the hard drive to me.
If anybody can shed some wisdom on this, I would appreciate it. My opinion is that there has probably been a hard drive failure. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? And if so, what was the solution? If this is a hard drive problem, I am disappointed that it did not last more than 16 months. Are there any statistics anywhere about the lifetime of these devices?
    Thanks,
    Rich

You might try a PRAM reset and see if this does any good.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
It sounds like the hard drive itself is toast based on how it looks in an enclosure. So you won't be able to boot from it. Possibly after a PRAM reset you could option boot to a disc or to your external drive.
I had the experience of a failed hard drive totally messing up my PowerMacG4, and it took some doing to get it going again. I finally got it going again, and it has been working ever since without issue.
The MBP is a different machine, but having experienced first hand what a dying hard drive could do, I think it's well worth doing any resets you can.
If no joy, make an appointment at the genius bar and ask them if they can run a hardware test from their store feed. If you do have other issues, they should show up then.
If you end up being able to boot to the optical drive, you could try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test yourself.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook pro hard drive woes (original failed, new one wont recognize)

So my hard drive recently messed up pretty hard a couple of months ago. I havea  mac book pro that was purchased around fall... 20...10? 2011? I'm actually not sure. Anyway, I started it up from the boot disk to wipe it and reinstall everything. Turns out the disk utility said there were bad sectors and needed repair. So I attempted repair, and it said it worked but then I rescanned and it said it needed repair... anyway after about 5 hours of doing all this stuff I said screw it and busted out my external hard drive. I successfully got to install and boot from that. Anyway, I recently got my hands on a 320 gb hitachi hard drive that I plugged in but it wont recognize it in the disk utility, at all. I have no idea why it wont. I know the cable is fine because it shows my other original failing hard drive.
So what do I do? There are no close apple stores or anything and I have pretty much no more money to send it out or anything like that. I just need it to recognize my new hard drive in disk utility.

u can give try to using external enclosre and backup ur files. I hope u will get files back. or using external enclosre with ur hdd boot into Linux and try to mount ur harddisk.
there are multiple no of tutorial to mount apple partion in Linux.

  • Internal Hard Drive Doesn't Work

I am going to buy a used MacBook Pro from a friend. The internal hard drive doens't work so they have OSX running from an external hard drive. I want to replace the internal hard drive with a new one but the person I am buying it from says that the Conection between the Motherboard and hard drive is messed up. Is there a connection between the Hard drive and motherboard that I can replace?

Anything with any Mass at all is connected with an orange plastic flex cable to damp out possible shock and vibration. You can't connect the drive directly to the motherboard and have it be removeable. Original iBooks did it that way, but replacing the drive was a total tear-down.
Check on ifixit for a tear-down procedure and a replacement cable for your exact computer.

I cannot get my iTunes library/music from my old computer to my new one. The old computer is so messed up that I cannot even open a browser.I tried to copy to an external hard drive and the music was there until I went to upload to the new computer. I disconnected my old computer so I will have to reconnect it I am sure. thank you for any help. Last time I transferred I used a product I purchased. That was a long time ago.

First of all make sure that you've definitely backed up the movies to your external hard disc.
In iMovie click on any event you don't want, go to the file menu and select 'move event to trash'. Then do the same for any unwanted projects - 'move project to trash'. Quit out of iMovie and empty the trash.
    Hope that helps!

  • Lost a 2 hard drives, have 7 k photos on a touch that I need to load on IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it.  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!

Lost my hard drive and also an Ipad, but have 7 k photos on a Touch that I need to load on fixed IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it. (There were more photos than the 7k, but they were saved on other drives, thank goodness).  7K pohotos on the Touch are no where else, must be saved!  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!  New Aperture and IPhoto on IMAC with no other photos loaded on the new hard drive yet.

I'd ask in the iTouch forum where there are more iTouch users there than here and they should know how to off load the photos.  It might take a 3rd party app.

  • Changed hard drive, now screen is messed up

I recently changed out the hard drive on my 15" 2007 Macbook Pro from the factory 5400 RPM, 160GB drive to a Hitachi 7200 RPM, 500GB drive. I carefully followed instructions online on how to open the laptop up, remove and replace the hard drive. When I went to boot up the laptop after the new hard drive was in (with the original OS 10.4 boot disc that came with the computer in the DVD drive) it seemed to load fine at first. I was on the grey load screen for a while, and when it moved to the "Choose your language" screen that appears the first time you turn on your Mac, the screen was a garbled mess. The best way I can describe it is that it looks like an old TV with bad reception from rabbit ear antennae. There are diagonal, blocky black lines across the screen. I can move the mouse cursor fine, and can see that clearly, and if I press enter, it's obvious the computer is working and moves on to the next screen, but it's all behind a garbled mess. Technical support wasn't much help, and only suggested I take it into Mac, but I know they'll charge me to fix it. Any ideas?

Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.

  • ITunes 8 messed up my hard drive

So this morning before I left for school I started the update. When I got home 8 hours later, the install was done (obviously) and it was asking me to restart my PC. My hard drive was and still is making a ring-type sound. It won't connect to my computer. I've tried turning it off and on but that doesn't help. I think this update is messed up.

    Hi
I had exactly the same thing happen to me today. I was installing iTunes 8.1.
My hard drive made a funny noise, I shut the computer down and it would not reboot.
I could not run Ghost, or reinstall Windows until I formated the hard drive and installed Windows from scratch.
I was then able to restore using my Ghost boot CD and my backup on my external HD. I just finished after hours of work.
I won't try and install iTunes 8 on this computer again.

  • Time Machine messed up my new internal hard drive. Help?

So I upgraded my internal hard drive to 1 TB and restored it with time machine backup. However, when I started my laptop, it kept giving me a "debugger called: <panic>" I am not sure if my time machine messed it up or it was the hard drive. Can anyone help me with this?
Also for more information, when it kept restarting and rebooting on its own, I could not control my own keyboard so I could not go to safe mode or anything like that. If you need to know more information, you can ask and I'll provide you with more information if you could help me out.
And I cannot post up the whole code cause it would disappear in 3 seconds.

  • Envy TouchSmart m6-k025dx Sleekbook Win 8 recovery with totally messed up hard drive?

I made a recovery flash drive when I first got my Envy. Now, after totally messing up the hard drive and being unable to recover Windows 8 (not 8.1) with the flash drive, I've reformatted the drive and loaded the Windows 10 Tech Preview (which seems to be working quite well). However, Tech Previews don't last forever, and I'd really like to get back Win 8. I still have the recovery flash drive, but there's obviously a problem with the recovery image.
Does anyone know if a generic recovery image is available anywhere?
    TIA

    Hi there @RockDoctor,
and welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Since you say that your recovery media is not good, you can always try to get it direct from HP.
Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive
Also you can look at this if you have not removed the HP_tools partition:
Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
Troubleshooting HP System Recovery Problems (Windows 8)
Creating a Recovery Image on Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows 8)
    I hope that this helps.

  • Computer hard drive messed up plz HELP!!!

the hard drive on my computer messed up somehow and had to get it replaced, now EVERYTHING from itunes is gone but i still have it on my ipod is there anything i can do to get it back onto my computer???
      Windows XP

Haha I wish I could remember! I'm looking for it right now...
EDIT: It's a checkbox option when you're looking at your iPod summary in iTunes... the very first one. There's no way to check it if your iPod isn't plugged in....
    I would say this:
close itunes and plug in your iPod and un whatever program you were told to use to transfer music back onto your PC. If iTunes opens and begins to update your iPod, I'm sorry, but really, it's the same as not trying.
    Good luck.

  • Had to have my hard drive "cleaned."  Now everything I try and do is a mess.  All my data on my iPhone was deleted.  I'm trying to figure out how to find it.  I can't update my apps.  Always asks for my PW, but tells me it's wrong....HELP!

I recently had to have my computer hard drive "cleaned."  While this was going on, I broke my SG3, and now own an SG4.
I also changed servers for the internet.  When I tried to plug in my SG4, after not being on iTunes for some time, all my data was erased.
No every time I try and do ANYTHING, it asks for my PW.....which is ALWAYS WRONG.....though I've reset it over and over and over.
I want my data back (contacts, pics, etc.).  But I can't even maneuver around iTunes any more.
How in the **** do I get someone from iTunes to give me assisstance for the myriad of problems for which I am encountering.  This is a CLUSTERF.....
    HELP!

There is no such thing as an "SG3" or "SG4".  Did you possibly mean a 3GS and iPhone4?
It has always been very basic to ensure that a backup exists of your media and other important files.  Computers fail, hard drives crashes... things happen.  Do you not have a backup?  The iPhone, like all iDevices is NOT a backup of your media, but rather a mirror of the content in the iTunes library on your computer.
If your contacts, pics, etc are not on your computer, no backups of the iPhone exist, and they are not on the phone, they are gone.
No one can magically make them re-appear.
