Hard Drive Light remains on even when system is powered off

HP xw8600 Workstation running XP SP3
In the past couple of weeks I am getting a lot of blue-screen errors with varying error codes, mostly pointing to problems with the C: drive. But what troubles me is that my hard drive activity light remains lit constantly, even when the system is powered off. The only way to make the light go out is to physically unplug the power cord from the computer. As soon as I plug the power cord back in, the HDD LED lights up.
I have Googled, Yahooed, and Binged this problem to death, and gotten nothing but pages and pages of why the hard drive would be busy when the machine is powered up. But powered down?
I ran HP's hardware diagnostics (found no problems, it never does) and have even disconnected the hard drive and moved it to another identical box (we have about 25 xw8600 boxes) and the problem did not follow. The HDD LED on this box remains lit with the power off and no hard drives connected.
I should note that the power light functions properly, I have checked the wiring and it's not backwards.

Hello WAVYTV, The symtoms you describe sound suspiciously like a faulty motherboard.
There may be a possibility that you could also have a faulty power supply.

  • Ethernet light remains on even when DV7 series laptop has been shut down

    Product: HP Pavilion DV7-7008tx
    OS: Windows 7 64-bit
Issue: When I shut down my laptop and leave the ethernet cable plugged in, the ethernet light stays on. Removing the cable turns the light off, but putting it back in brings the light back on.
Is this meant to happen, or is there a way to stop this?
    Thanks!

Do you have the "Wake on Lan" setup in the BIOs? The feature allows the computer to be woken up my network inputs. You will need to boot into the BIO to turn off this feature. You may be able to disable this feature in Windows 7 as well. Here is a good article on how to disable/enable the Wake on LAN feature: Wake-on-Lan (WOL) for Windows 7 Made Easy!
    Hope this helps!

  • My battery life is draining even when IPad is powered off?

I've had my iPad2 for about 15 months now, of course just out of warranty, and within the past week the battery has gone to ****. Before a charge use to last me 4-5 days with usage and on stand-by the rest of the time. Within a night it suddenly changed to that over a 8 hour stand-by cycle that the battery would lose 30-35%. I did a restore to see if that changed anything and it didn't. Went to the Genius Bar and they ran a diagnostic test on the battery and said it was still running excellently at 100% function. He suggested a few things to help preserve battery life but couldn't replicate the problem.
I went home and did a full clean sweep, getting rid of all apps and settings and shutting off my cellular data, in case that might be the issue. Then let the battery drain down until it died. I recharged it back up to 100% over a 24 hour span. Then I just left it sitting there untouched for the next 18 hours. Over that time he battery drained 60%. I again took it to the Genius Bar and they said that was normal, I disagree and understand that standby still uses battery but 60% really? They said at this point the only thing I can do is live with it and just turn my iPad off when I'm not using it or they can replace it for $250. I don't have the money so I said I'll just live with it and turn it off. That was on Tuesday. I spent Tuesday and most of Wednesday using it very little and noticed the battery was doing well. Thursday it was charged back up to a 100% and I read and used it for a few things then went to bed at 2:30, before going to bed I turned the iPad off with a battery charge of 88% and let it be.i woke up at 1030 and just turned it on and now the charge is it 62%. Since typing this it had gone down to 57%. From my understanding this is not normal at all. The Genius Bar so far doesn't know what the issue could be other than something in the software and I am out of ideas. Is there anything you can recommend? I'd really hate to spend the $250 but at this point with no usage to very little usage the battery life won't last much more than a day.
Thanks for any help you might be able to offer and sorry for the long read.

  • Have a nx9600 and when it tries to reboot, the hard drive light comes on, the 2 lock lights flash

At boot, the hard drive light comes on, the 2 lock lights flash simultanously (A and 1 ) , 2 of the 3 fans come on, then it appears to turn off. It will sit in a loop through the reboot process until the power and the battery have been removed.
Have replaced the drive and the center fan. The replaced fan is new and an HP fan. When I have been able to get it to boot , loaded windows and linux on the new drive.
If it sits long enough and you pray  it may reboot. Once I turned it upside down and it rebooted.
Have had the system up and running for hours with no problem, then have to reboot or a shutdown and won't reboot.
    Suggestions ?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

When I plug in my ipad it automatically tires to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

  • I have an alias of one of my external hard drives in my trash. When I click on "show original" all my external H D 's and my Mac hard drive show up. How do I delete this icon from the trash without loosing all my files?

I have an alias of one of my external hard drives in my trash. When I tried to delete it, it showed that I was deleting 80,000 files and counting. I stopped the delete process and when I clicked on "show original" all my external H.D.'s and my Mac hard drive show up. How do I delete this alias from the trash without loosing all my files? When I tried to drag it back to the desk top, it just made a duplicate and remained in the trash. When I turned off the external H.D., the trash was then empty. Tried rebooting the computer and then turning the external hard drive back on and the alias shows up in the trash again. Much help appreciated.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • DV6Z laptop with AMD A83530MX and 640GB 7200rpm HDD operating with orange hard drive light active

My laptop seems to be operating ok but the hard drive light recently turned to orange and when operating it blinks orange instead of the white/blinking white. I have tried disabling HP DriveGuard and also re-enabling it, restarting, defragmenting, disk check with windows (with error fix enabled), and even the HP hard drive test in the BIOS. Nothing will change the orange light. Is there something wrong with my hard drive? What can I do to get the light to display correctly?
    Thanks!

There may be one or more large folders in your /Volumes folder that shouldn't be there and are using up your disk space.
/Volumes is an 'invisible" folder at the root level of your internal drive which is supposed to contain only the "mount points" for your attached disk volumes, but sometimes an actual folder can mistakenly get created there, often as a result of a failed copy operation such as you experienced with SuperDuper. Such a "ghost" folder will have a name similar to a real external drive, and can contain data that was meant for the real external drive but never got there. When the real external volume then re-mounts, it can no longer use its own name for the mount point in /Volumes because that name is already "taken", and so an extra number gets appended to the mount point. This may have happened twice in your situation, since the actual drive is now mounting as "Untitled 2".
/Volumes is a hidden folder, but it's easy to peek into it. First you should *eject and then physically disconnect all external drives*. Then:
    Finder>Go menu> Go to Folder
    enter /Volumes and click Go
You should see an alias to the startup volume. Don't touch this, or any other aliases. Do you also see a large folder named "Untitled, and perhaps another folder named "Untitled 1," which are not aliases? If so, delete them, and restart.

  • MSI P67A-GD65 hard drive light always lit

I built a new pc with this motherboard a few weeks ago and everything is great except for the hard drive light.  It stays dim 100% of the time and does show hard drive activity so i know it's working.  I switched the connector on the motherboard to see if it was a polarity issue, but then it doesn't work at all.  I even used a different LED that wasn't connected to my case and removed all the other connectors (power, reset, etc) and it still stayed dim.  Lastly, i removed all the SATA cables from the motherboard, all fan connectors with no luck.  I would appreciate any information on this, and if it's normal or if something is wrong and i should RMA the board.
PS - Bios version is 1.9.  I never updated it cause everything has been working as it should.

Quote from: NovJoe on 30-May-11, 15:38:56
You should try the board out of the chassis. You may also want to try it in barebone conditions.
I tried that yesterday.  Took it completely out of the case and left everything else off the board except for the ram and it still does it.  Also used a separate LED to test that wasn't part of the case.  In all the years i've worked on pc's, i've never seen this before.  I guess at this point i'll have to live with it or buy another one and send this one back for RMA.  I contacted MSI and they replied back with a suggestion to update the bios.  This is going nowhere.  While it probably won't actually hurt anything, i didn't spend $1500 on a new system to have problems with the motherboard.
Can someone help me test by using their MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) board?  Disconnect JUST your power light from the motherboard to make sure no other light is interfering with the hard drive light, and see if it's still dimly lit at around 25% to 30% regardless if you're in the bios, or in windows.
Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point.

  • How do I back up files to external hard drive in order to upgrade operating system?

How do I back up files to external hard drive in order to upgrade operating system?

Buy yourself a portable hard drive from WD or the like.  It should have a capacity at least twice that of your machine hard drive.  Then follow the instructions that come with it; it is quite straightforward.
I have a similar machine to you by the sound of it.   After the initial back up, it is just a matter of topping up every couple of months or so, plus whenever you do to back up any major upgrade.
A portable one is good because you can store it with relatives when not in use which gives protection in the case of fire or theft.
I use two backups.   One, an external HD permanently connected for my Time Machine and the second, a portable for the reasons I gave.

  • When using Time Machine, if I delete items from my computer, will they still be backed up to access later on my external hard drive? In other words, when time machine backs up again, will it delete the files from the back up?

When using Time Machine, if I delete items from my computer, will they still be backed up to access later on my external hard drive?
In other words, when time machine backs up again, will it delete the files from the back up that I have deleted from my computer?

No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.

iTunes match won't automatically remove content from your computer, if you want to do that you will need to do it manually yourself.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
