Hard Drive Memory Issue..

Hi, I have an external hard drive that I download movies and television shows to directly from the web. The issue is that sometimes my external hard drive doesn't register with the program I use and then the file gets downloaded to the laptop itself, though I can't access the actual files. The program Disk Inventory tells me they are in a folder called "Volumes" but I can't find that folder even if I search for it. The room is being taken up on my laptop's HD anyways.I used to download directly to my computer and transfer the file to my external HD but after I deleted the original file, there seemed to still be some memory being used, not as much as the whole file, but a few bites had gone missing. What's going on?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter /Volumes/ as the folder's path to access those files.

  • Hard Drive Encryption Issue

This is in regard to hard drive encryption issues in my USB Hard drive. I have Windows 7. I was encrypting my USB hard drive and
was able to enter a password. However, I did not receive any prompt to save the Bitlocker recovery key.  During encryption process, I received an error. The encryption process was unsuccessful. However, now when I plug-in the hard drive, I receive the
following message on the status bar:
Application and Device Control rule Block writing to removable media. Unencrypted drive found (No_Encrypted_Found) has blocked edpa.exe trying to access Volume
    {e3901a75-f1ff-11e1-817c-806e6f6e6963 alpha-numeric number appearing here}
When I try to open the drive, it asks for a password. When I enter the password, I am receiving the following error message:
Bitlocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media
    being write-protected.
I have read that Bitlocker repair tool can help resolve this issue.
However, I just have the password that I had set to encrypt the drive and Bitlocker recovery key identification. Can this help to get access to my hard drive data  using the Bitlocker tool.

  • Hard drive space issues

I have some hard drive space issues.
At present I only have about 13GB remaining on my 40GB hard drive, which is not necessarily an issue except that I have almost nothing installed/saved on my machine. I have 1 CD ripped to iTunes, no photos in the iPhoto library. I did a quick look with Disk Inventory X and found that the "Printer" folder is 3.2GB - can I get rid of some/all of that as I don't intend to print from the machine?
What is filling my disk? As far as I can tell the OS should only take up around 3 GB so where did the other 24GB go? Where, oh where?

Yes, you can delete printer drivers you don't use. OS X takes up far more than 3 GBs. A pretty minimal installation is nearly 7 GBs. Your computer also may have came with pre-bundled software applications (not standard OS X applications.) OS X will also use potentially 10 GBs of space on a temporary basis for temporary files, log files, and cache files. So for a 40 GB drive it's not too surprising to have only 13 GBs free. Perhaps it's time for you to put in a larger hard drive. You can purchase hard drives at:
    MacSales.com
    Buy.com
    NewEgg.com
The Mini uses a notebook drive. If you have a pre-2006 (Intel) model it uses an ATA drive. After that year they use SATA drives.

  • Can I add hard drive memory to my MacBook Pro (13" with retina display)?

I know I can use an external hard drive, but is there some way to add hard drive memory (either myself or taking it to an Apple store)?

OWC does offer internal storage upgrades which, depending upon the vintage of your MBP, may or may not be applicable:

Hard Drive syncing issues "!" HEEEELLLLPPPP!
I use an external hard drive to store all my music. I sync the hard drive with Itunes because my library is way too big to store on my computer. About every 8 month or so Itunes displays "!" next to all my songs because it can't seem to locate them. When prompted to locate file, it can but this needs to be done one by one. I typically delete my entire library and start over. This is a complete nightmare because I have to build all my files and play list again. Can anyone HELP me out of this frustration??? Thank you in advance!

Windows can assign different drive letters to digital camera cards, USB sticks, etc if you don't specifically assign them drive letter.

  • Migration Assistant Issue - Hard Drive Memory Related

I've been trying several days to migrate my system from a 2009 iMac to a new MacMini with no success.  I've tried Migration Assistant over WiFi, Ethernet to my AirPort images and directly in Target Disk mode (Firewire 800).  Both machines are current and running 10.10.1.
When I first launched Migration Assistant on both machines the old iMac never sees the MacMini although the MacMini sees the iMac and generates the six-digit code.
I next tried connecting to the Time Machine backup of the iMac and encountered the persistent fault that I can't seem to solve.  I can find the server and files but once I get to the screen where it asks what files to Migrate it always calculates not enough space to move the files.  The MacMini has 846 GB available and I'd like to move 338 GB over from the iMac.  I have no clue what is causing this.
When I deselect items such as Photos and Music nothing changes, in fact I can deselect all but 100 MB and it still says there's not enough Hard Drive space on the MacMini.  I've made sure that there isn't a same user name and run Disk Utility Disk Permissions many times to ensure the hardware is good.
I manually moved the Music and Pictures and reduced the Time Machine image size to under 250 GB but I still get the same message each and every time.  After spending $30 today on a Firewire 800 cable I'm at my wits end.  Can anyone suggest where to go next? I've looked at the console log and don't see anything that can point me in the next direction...
Should I get on the console and call the Setup Assistant and erase my machine after I've taken hours to transfer the Pics and Music or is there a better way?

What data do you actually want to migrate? Is it just 'user data' or applications & other files?
For a user data only migration
If the iMac is still setup with the user account I would forget about the Time Machine disk or using Migration Assistant and try a manual migration. It is an involved process, but if the files copy OK you can create the user account & it should be fine.
Start the old iMac in a normal boot, login as an admin user, ideally in an account you do not want to transfer to the Mini (create a new one if you need).
Boot the Mini in Target Disk Mode and attach to the iMac.
You need to copy the desired user home folder(s) from the iMac into the /Users folder on the Mini.
Assuming this file copy works (it's unclear if the issues in MA are due to problems in your file systems) you can disconnect the Mini & reboot it.
If the copy fails use recovery mode to repair both Macs - repair the filesystem & permissions in Disk Utility & retry.
On the Mini open 'System Preferences > Users & groups' and authenticate. Double check the name of the user folder you copied over, this is the users 'short name' a.k.a 'Account name' it must not contain any spaces, the 'Full name' can have spaces.
Create a new user with the 'foldername' as the 'Account name'. If it is correct you will be prompted to 'use existing folder'.
Agree to use that folder & the OS will make the new user & assign the correct permissions to that home folder. If you get no prompt double check the name matches the folder in /Users.
Repeat for any other user accounts.
Reboot the Mini & try to log in as the new user.
I would not attempt to migrate applications via this method - too many files can be scattered all over the disk by Application installers, it's simpler to reinstall using the installers, grab new copies from the developer or from the App Store etc.
Network & System settings will also be left behind & iTunes will require you to authorise the Mac, but most other things should be fine inside the migrated user account.
If you are uncertain ask & I'll try to clarify, as ever backup important data before you begin, disconnect the backups to reduce the risk of accidentally deleting the wrong thing & good luck

  • Hard Drive Capacity Issue -- 51 GBs missing btwn utilized and avail space

    I have a 200MB internal hard drive.
    My SYSTEM PROFILER states:
Capacity=185.99GB (which I understand due to system use, etc)
    Available= 26.25 GB (odd)
This available space reading seemed odd as I don't have much data on the HD (transferred files using Migration Assistant from a 80gb, 1.67ghz older G4 laptop).
So I went to the ACTIVITY MONITOR and looked at DISK USAGE at it states:
    Space Utilized= 99.14 GB
    Space Free= 25.85 GB
With a total of 124.99 GB between the two (the adjacent pie chart total)
MY QUESTION: If I have a HD with a capacity of 185.99 GB, with only 99.14 GB utilized, why is the space free missing 51 GBs? Where did this memory space go?
Note: I have never partitioned the Hard Drive or created any sort of RAM Disk.
    Anyone? Please help.

    UPDATE BUT STILL NO ANSWER:
Ran DISK UTILITY which fixed some minor errors and how states "Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK"
But the issue remains - I have a 200GB hard drive but the data at the bottom of this utility reads:
    Capacity : 186.0 GB (199,705,673,728 Bytes)
    Available : 26.3 GB (28,291,375,104 Bytes)
    Used : 98.6 GB (105,916,047,360 Bytes)
    Number of Folders: 173,085
    Number of Files: 886,070
HOW CAN I ONLY HAVE 26.3GB available when I have only used 98.6GB of 186GB = Should be a 87.4 GB balance available, not 26.3 GB, right????????
What is the deal here? Is this related to MobileMe or iPhone issue maybe?
The hardware start-up test and disk utility test are all clean. Someone? Anyone?
    Thanks!

  • Hard Drive writing Issue.

    Hi,
I'm not sure if I'm in the correct forum, but I'm hoping someone can help.
I think I've pinpointed the reason why my IMac is slowing.
When i download large files, or record a movie through my iSight camera, i noticed in both situations, that the data seems to be written to the disk in a very intermittent way.
The Activity monitor does not show high levels of CPU usage, but the disk activity maxes out every few seconds. Data is written in spurts. Virtual memory is half of my capacity, and pageouts are low.
The resulting movie file is choppy, start and stop, with pieces missing that did not get written to the disk.
When downloading Torrents, the torrent client freezes until the hard drive catches up (it seems).
I have already cleaned the preference files, and caches with Applejack, and also Onyx.
    Does anyone have any insight?

Torrents are by and large illegal. They give you buggy, untested software that can cause data corruption and other issues. Furthermore, torrent software makes your machine into an internet file server, which in turn slows down your traffic. Stop using it, and get software from legitimate sources such as http://www.macupdate.com/ and http://www.versiontracker.com/

  • Hard drive temp issue

Hi, I didn't see a forum here dealing with basic hardware issues (would it be better posted at "power mac" or "leopard"?) so I figure unix geeks might have an answer as well as anyone...
I have a 128G seagate 3.5in hard drive as the main drive now in this mac. Using iStat Nano widget, I see a reading -- sometimes -- for the "hard drive temp". Other times, I get a "N/A" readout.
What is being read? Can iStat nano really read a hard drive temp if the seagate has that facility? And if so, why do I sometimes get no readout? It seems pretty random to me, I really don't have "some things on" only when there's no readout. Thank you.

    Hi
I presume that memory modules have not the same bus speed and that is reason for overheating. Please be careful about that and use just compatible parts.
    Bye

  • Deleting Photos from iPhoto doesn't return hard drive memory

    Hi,
I need more room on my hard drive. I have needed to pare down my photos for awhile, so I got information on my iPhoto library which was about 40gb and had about 12,500 photos. I spent hours deleting about 2500 photos and movies last night to try to recover hard drive space. I removed them by selecting move to trash or just hitting the delete key. The photos were removed from my libraries, but no memory was recovered (none of the photos ended up in the trash). I then restarted the program and computer to see if that helped to no avail. Any idea why the hard drive space is not recovered?

To remove photos you need to me in Library view - either Photos or Events - and when you hit delete the pics will go to the iPhoto trash. Then you have to empty the iPhoto Trash (that's in the iPhoto menu).
Tapping delete from an Album only removes the pics from that Album.
iPhoto has been known to be temperamental when deleting large numbers of files. Best to empty the trash every 100 images or so.
If space is an issue, you know you can move your Library to an external HD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards
    TD

  • Hard drive memory missing

I have a Mac Book Pro. It has been running very slowly so been checking the amount of memory available. Get info shows 277GB being used out of 319GB. Daisy disk sofatware showing the same. In both cases though if I dig deeper into each of the sub folders, the content does not add up to more than 200GB.
How can there be such a gap? Should I defragment the drive, is this the problem?
Not the first time I have had this. Had the same issue a few months back on our iMac but then it got stolen when we were burglared so never ended up solving the issue.
    Help really appreciated.
    Frederique

    So far, so good.
As verification, go to Apple (icon)/About this Mac/More Info, and tap on Storage. Disk should show "xxGB free out of xxGB". The second number will be your full hard drive capacity. According to your post, you have 277GB of 319GB.
I don't know your model, but it looks like you have a 320GB capacity. If that's so, your drive is perfectly normal. Disk Utility indicates your drive is fine.

  • Thinkcentre 7360 Bootup / Hard Drive / BIOS Issue Windows 7

Hi A pc was switched off by the wall plug accidentally by someone else when it was switched on. Since then it won't boot up. When you switch it on it gets as far as the window logo (which doesn't quite load fully, the coloured cirlcles swirl but do not form the windows logo before it reboots). The operating system is Windows 7. The pc had a 250GB HD in, this was cloned onto a Solid State Disk. Only the solid state disk is plugged in along with the CD drive. The original Hard Drive was left in the computer but unplugged. Both hard drives fail to boot up, the original one could not be faulty as it has never been used. Plugged both disks into a new pc and they boot up fine individually. Is there something obvious in the BIOS that is preventing the disk starting up? Safe mode does not workCheckdisk finds no errors, but as previous said, the hard drive works fine in another pc. I get the startup repair and start windows normally options. Startup repair starts up fine, start windows normally reboots. Resetting BIOS to defaults does not change anything. Removing the battery does not change anything. Tried different memory and different SATA cables. Any advice welcome. It is a Lenovo Small Form Factor Windows 7 PC - Model number 7360WN4 Jason

Sometimes issues can arise when a driver is downloaded directly from the manufacturer, because in some cases, there are minor tweaks made to the one made specifically for your computer.
Sometimes the developers (combination of HP software developers and the 3rd party maker's software developers) have to tweak the maker's original driver to work with all of the other components inside your particular computer. All of the dv4-2000s may have, for instance, a specific technology of hard drives and optical drives, but each different dv4-2XXX may have different brands of hard drives/optical drives.
Graphics drivers are that way. I always recommend getting the ATI driver, not from ATI's website, but directly from the HP Driver Page, because getting the version on ATI's website will cause some issues with the HP Framework (which is responsible for making the whole web of specific components all work together) on the computer. After that several things have to be uninstalled and the correct versions have to be installed just to undo what that one driver version did.
It gets a little complicated. Suffice it to say, always try to download it from the HP Driver Page for your model first. Then if that version or previous versions don't work, try downloading directly from the 3rd party maker's page. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if I need to clarify anything
I'm going to recommend the following drivers:
Intel Chipset Driver version 9.1.1.1020 A
Intel Management Engine Interface Driver version 1.00 A
Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver version 8.9.2.1002 A
Intel Turbo Boost Technology Driver version 1.0.0.1030 A
Essential System Updates version 7.00 A
    LightScribe System Software version 1.18.18.1
Also, please check and see what BIOS version you're currently on. To do that, press the FN + ESC keys and look for 'F.##' and let me know what that is. I'll compare it to the latest version and link you to that one if necessary.

  • AEBS hard drive incompatibility issues

Is there an updated list of incompatible hard drives for the AEBS? I have an external 300GB Seagate that is formatted FAT32 and does not mount. It shows up partially under the DISKS menu in Airport Utility, meaning it shows that there is storage connected but doesn't show a volume. I thought the new 5.2.1 update was going to do the trick since it dealt with incompatibility issues but not so. I have tried everything except reformatting because I cannot lose all the info that's on the drive currently. Any help would be appreciated.

I've checked out your list and posted my experiences.
From the tests that I've run over the last week or so, the Macally PHR-100AC 3.5" HDD enclosure should work. Failures 'seems' to point specifically to the hard drive used.
I have now used 4 different drives (different sizes, manufacturers etc..) in 2 Macally cases (both with updated firmware) and the only failure - via USB but not FireWire - was the Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600. Reformatting it with WD's utility is Windows XP via Bootcamp cleared up the issue with the drive and is now fully functional and consistent under Mac OS X and through the AEBS. I still have one more WD1600 to look at.
