Hard Drive Missing after 10.5.2 update

Updated to 10.5.2 now my HD is missing from desktop. Everything else seems to be fine. How do I get it back on the Desktop?

Go into Finder preferences, General tab, check the box to show the hard disk on the desktop.

  • USB Hard Drive Disappears after 10.6.3 update

My Samsung S2 640 GB USB portable hard drive is missing from Desktop, Finder and Disk Utility-- but visible in System Profiler after 10.6.3 update. It was fine before the update.
Plugged directly into rear of iMac, I changed cables and slots-- no joy. Even tried a double USB cable as there is no external power supply.
Four other USB HDs work just fine in all slots om the iMac , and this Samsung S2 works fine in my MacBook SL 10.6.3
I bought an identical Samsung S2 and it had the same problems-- so it's not the drive.
    Suggestions?

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.

  • My G5's hard drive died after doing a software update while iPhone was connected.

My G5's hard drive was corrupted and unbootable after doing a software update while my iPhone 4 was connected. Coincidence or related?
Attempts at rebooting produced the file folder icon with flashing question mark. It's been a LONG time since I last saw that.
Disk Utility/First Aid reported that drive had "invalid node structure." The disk could not be repaired because it "could not be unmounted."
Is the failure possibly related to the iPhone being connected at the time of the software update and restart?

Possible the iPhone had something to do with it, but I like to make sure the Disk Directory & Permissions are good before any update.
Was that Repair/Verify done when booted from the Install Disc?
You must repair the HD,  if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it then...
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

  • LaCie Hard Drive vanishes after 10.4.9 update...

I've seen this complaint all over the web, but I've seen no helpful solutions from Apple or anyone else. Here's what happened to me.
First off, this is CLEARLY a problem with the latest software update 10.4.9, NOT a problem with my drive, and I'll tell you why in a minute...
After updating my OS to 10.4.9 and restarting the computer, my LaCie 500 gigabyte USB drive's icons vanished from my desktop. I tried ALL of the recommended fixes, including dropping $100.00 on Diskwarrior. Nothing worked.
    Here's the clincher:
I got the bright idea to take my LaCie Drive over to my father-in-law's Mac, which he rarely updates. Sure enough, he had 10.4.8 installed, and my LaCie drive mounted just fine.
As an experiment, I then updated his computer to 10.4.9.
Guess what? The drive disappeared from his computer upon restart!
There is CLEARLY a problem with the 10.4.9 update in reference to external USB hardware at least, if not Firewire as well. I've read at least 50 similar complaints on various forums, and can only assume Apple has realized its error and is working on an update to 10.4.9 at this moment.
I'm going to call Applecare ths afternoon and report the problem. Good luck, all.
    - Brainclaw

    Thanks for replying!
I spoke to Applecare last week; two different people. The first one was a frontline tech support person who claimed to know nothing about these problems. I was then referred to a higher-up person who said he HAD heard about these problems, but was very non-committal about it. I have his number and was told to call back after this Thursday (03-29-07) to check up on it.
With the massive amount of people having the same problem, you'd think a fix would be forthcoming. I recommended to the Mac people at work NOT to run the 10.4.9 updater until Apple gets this resolved, as we rely on our external hard drives rather heavily.
I hope Apple releases a fix soon... more news as I get it.

  • Second internal drive missing after 10.4.11 update

After gathering dust for some time I've decided up update the OS on an old B/W GS so it is compatible with my ISP. I have 2 internal drives and one external firewire. During the install I saw the second internal drive (which was the former boot volume running 10.2.X) in the list of available drive for install. But after the OS update the second internal drive is MIA. I believe it shows up in the System Profiler report (but with the I'm not sure one is not the Firewire). Any ideas?

I checked the connection and settings are they are according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Upon opening the Mac I saw (then remembered) that the second drive was connected via a Sonnet PCI card. I believe the problem is that the firmware for that card needs updated.
To reinforce that opinion, I've discovered that the drive still appears when booting in 9 and 10.2.x. It's very likely a 10.4. thing.

  • Hard drive is full software cannot get updated! what should I do?

Hard drive is full software cannot get updated! what should I do?

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated the system to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. Why and what am I supposed to do?

Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated it from Lion to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. They also didn't put Pages, Keynote or Numbers back on it until I argued with them. Of course, I didn't have my data backed up. My hard drive was destroyed when I tried to install the update of Mavericks myself. I should not have to buy iWeb and iPhoto when I already had them. Suggestions?

    cwhargrave,
have you tried looking in the App Store, to see if you can redownload iWeb and iPhoto there gratis?
If you haven’t done so already, you should purchase an external hard drive to act as a Time Machine backup destination, so that you’ll have an option to rollback to a working environment if a new OS installation is troublesome.

  • New Macbook Pro hard drive crash after 9 months?  How to avoid it again...?

Hi - I've just had my hard drive replaced after it crashed - only after 9 months!!!!  How can this be?  I thought Macs were supposed to be more resilient and reliable?   I always kept the software up to date.
Is there anything I should be doing to avoid this happening again?
    - let the battery run down completely / always keep it charged and power source plugged in?
    - don't run too many programmes at once?
    - shut down completely rather than sleep mode?
If anyone has any tips / advice...otherwise I'm considering selling it.
    Thanks

You can't just take that drive from the older system and install it in the new system. Even though both run Lion the Lion install on the older system does not have the correct driver set for the new hardware. In fact Apple came out with a newer version of Lion Just For these Newer System.
It may now be on the Apple servers bot it wasn't a few days, 5-12, ago..

  • Disappearing Hard Drive Space After Yosemite Update

After installing OS X Yosemite my hard drive space has dwindled to basically nothing, rendering my computer useless.  I had at least 50 gb (maybe more) of hard drive space before updating from mavericks to yosemite.  Now, after using my computer for 30 mins or less I get an error message saying that my storage space is low. After a restart I will get about 600 mb of storage but then the cycle repeats.  Since I have upgraded to Yosemite I have not saved or downloaded any large files but there is a significant amount of storage space (104 gb) used in the other category.  It is not consistent with my usage. I initially had file vault encryption turned on but I thought maybe that was the cause of my disappearing hard drive space so I turned file encryption off and still no luck.
    Please Help!

You are too low on drive space for iDVD to run properly. It is recommended that you try to have about 15-20 GB free for the application to run. See if you can delete anything to free up more space. Or, move more of your files to your external drive. iDVD needs to be on your computer's drive, so don't move it, or any of the iLife applications to your external drive.
You can create iMovies on an external drive, move your entire iPhoto and iTunes libraries to external drives, but I find iDVD works better if I create its projects on my main drive. I save all of my iDVD projects as disk image files and then move those files to my external drive for saving my projects. This allows me to delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie project used in it, which gives more free space on my drives.

  • Hard Drive errors after update attempt

I have a Macbook with Mac OSX 10.5.7. 2.2 GHz Intel core duo 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM Western Digital 320GB Hard drive
I attempted updating to the newest version and the computer froze part way through. When I tried to restart I got the daisy wheel running on the grey screen, but would not go further. So i put in the Install Disc, and hit power button and shift key. I got as far as Installer, but when I got the window that asked where to install the OS, there were no choices in the window.
I then removed the disc and tried to boot up, which it did. All the data is there, but I did lose my desktop customization. All applications launch OK (I have tried about a third) except Safari. Safari will not launch.
Based on another post in the forum, i went to Disk Utility and tried to Repair the disk. It failed due to a "Invalid Node Structure". So I tried to Repair Disk Permissions (also based on a forum post). That ran OK, but now the Repair Disk button is grayed out. And when I try to Verify Disk, I get the following:
SMART Status is verified, Partition Map Scheme is GUID.
    In the History Window:
    Performing Live Verification
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking Catalog file
(the next three lines are in red letters)
    Invalid Node Structure
The volume MacHD needs to be repaired
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
I have also found that there is no longer an administrator for the computer. It is actually my daughter's, and both she and I have (used to have) administrator privileges. Now in Accounts we are both listed as Standard users. I tried to update software. When asked to give my password, it said I was not an administrator (Using the correct password). Neither would my daughter's password work. The laptop does not think we are administrators.
So now the computer is running, and all data is still on it. But I cannot launch Safari. And I cannot update software (as there is no administrator).
(I have seen some posts suggesting third party software which may fix my disk. But they cost $100 and I can buy a new hard drive for 60 to 80.)
Has anyone a clue as to what went wrong? More important- does anyone know how to fix it??
    Many thanks in advance.
    Mark

After I erase the hard drive (I assume one pass of writing zeros is good enough, 7 passes not needed?) do I turn off the laptop, then turn on and insert the Install Disk? Will there be a prompt telling me when to put in the disk? Or do I put in the disc right after erasing?
One pass is fine. If you've previously backed up your hard drive to an external hard drive using SuperDuper!, which is what I use and recommend, or another program, if it created a bootable drive, you want to boot off of it, bring up SuperDuper! and copy the drive back to the internal hard drive. SuperDuper also makes the drive bootable. When done, reboot, and you should be all set. If you're using Time Machine, you'll want to install the operating system, then restore the Time Machine backup. SuperDuper! is available from http://www.shirt-pocket.com/superduper/superduperdescription.html
Finally- should I update the OS? Is there a problem with the newest update that caused this crash, or was it just a spurious glitch/bad luck?
I've been running 10.5.8 for awhile with no issues, and would recommend moving to it.

  • Hard drive issues after update 10.10.3

Question also posted here:Hard Drive Issues (Both new and old)
I'm trapped in a HDD nightmare with my MacBook Pro mid-2012.
I updated to Yosemite 10.10.3 (with the Photos app). A couple of days after the update, I was watching a movie on my TV screen via HDMI. In the middle of the movie I removed the HDMI cable from the MacBook Pro and everything freezes. I forced shut down (Note: My HDD was encrypted). After I forced shut down, I tried to turn on and the loading screen would never stop loading - like, 14 hours stuck with the progress bar. Since I have backups, I decided to access DU and format my HDD. I tried everything. For real. Every command line I could type on Terminal to format, repair, erase and/or partition. I read almost every issue-related questions on the forums and stack exchange groups for a week (even posted my issue here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/181090/erasing-and-partitioning-hard-dr ive-from-internet-recovery?noredirect=1#comment215695_181090).
So, I decided that it was a HDD failure and bought a new one.
I bought the Seagate 1TB SSHD Hybrid  - ST1000LM014. Installed the new fresh disk and guess what? All those same problems again. I´m not able to restore from Time Machine because it doesn't recognize the disk in the restore page. But the disk is recognized in the DU. When I try to erase or partition the new SSHD, the same old errors: File system formatter failed. Yes, I tired GUID Partition Table, all of the security options, etc.
Please. Any light that you can throw at this issue, I'll be very grateful for. BTW, the new SSHD is recognized and the SMART Status says: Verified.
Any ideas on *** is going on?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Just updated to firefox 3.6.8 and now my laptop's hard drive failed after subsequent firefox crashes.

I just updated to firefox 3.6.8 this morning after getting prompted to update as I started firefox. The firefox update successfully installed page said that I should update to the latest adobe flashplayer, so I did that as well, although that installation failed for whatever reason. I figured that I would update it later. I started watching live streaming videos on a website, and it was working for awhile, but firefox started to not respond. I tried opening up task manager, but even that started to lag and took minutes to open. The problem seemed resolved for awhile, but firefox started to not respond off and on, task manager stopped responding completely, explorer crashed, and my computer blue screened. It wouldn't even get off the blue screen after minutes of waiting, so I shut my laptop down manually. I'm positive that this couldn't have been a virus, since I only visited my usual websites, and I have both adblock plus and noscript installed. As for my laptop now, it won't boot to windows vista. I tried the hard drive test and failed. Now my laptop isn't even able to turn off no matter how long I hold down the power button. It's not an old laptop, so I doubt that it was just time for it to die.
I have always been a fan of firefox, but this is just horrible. I don't know if it was firefox's fault but it sure seems like it...
I'm currently on my older laptop, since my other one is obviously dead now. My broken one had vista installed and again, firefox 3.6.8 version.

I have the same problem. I have never had a problem with Firefox before, and use it as my main browser. However recently, after updating to 3.6.8, its been crashing all the time. Up to 20 times an hour. Usually it occurs when I click a link from a Google search, or in Yahoo. Even if I send in a crash report and restart Firefox, it crashes as soon as the same page is brought back up, or the same link is clicked. I have also had it crash when completely idle. Its very frustrating as it is my favorite browser. I've resorted to using Google Chrome for the time being.

  • Missing hard drive space after aborted attempt at sharing iMovie project with YouTube

So, recently I tried sharing an iMovie project with YouTube.  I clicked on the project in my project library, then selected share with YouTube from the drop down menu.  I chose to share it as a HD 720 project.  At this point, I had 27 GB of free hard drive space. After the project was converted (or whatever it's called, a process which took about half an hour, and which left me with about 6.5 GB of hard drive space), but before the project was actually exported or shared with or uploaded or published to YouTube (the second step), I saw that it was going to take three hours to upload, so I decided I wanted to share it as a non-HD video, in order to save time and space on my HD.  I cancelled the upload.  I then deleted the project in my imovie projects folder (since it now had the HD logo beside the name), intending to just start over and share the project in 960x540.  Thing is, after deleting every trace of it I could find in iMovie, in my Documents Folder, in my Movies folder, and in iTunes, I only reclaimed 4 GB of space on my hard drive (leaving me with 10 GB).  So what happened to the missing 17 GBs, and how can I get them back?  Also, the amount of space used in order to share that project just seems excessive to me, so I realize that something else might be going on here.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Comments?
    Thanks.
