Hard Drive Name Suddenly Changed to a Sentence, Odd Files Appearing on Desktop

My wife was at her dad's house, when she IM'd to ask: is it bad that the harddrive is suddenly called "because bes told me e needed me to run fto the pet store"
She then said a random document appeared on the desktop called: "jenny who is in your englidsh class amd she said you arent even doing a project until may and just incase you dont know hat month it is. it is december"
I tried Googling this every which way from Sunday but couldn't find anything resembling this. Does anybody have any idea what's going on? I advised her to backup all important folders/files to an external source immediately.

Anyone?

  • Hard Drive name changed on it's own.

    Hi there.
On starting my Mac Mini this morning I noticed that the hard drive name had changed from "Mac HD" to "/" without any input from myself.
does anyone have an idea what may have occured ?
    Thank's.

Try using GrandPerspective to see what's taking up all the space.
Also, make sure everything you don't need is turned off under Sharing; it's possible that you left file sharing on without a password and someone is taking advantage of that.
If you have a MobileMe account, do you have iDisk Syncing turned on? Or something similar if you have Dropbox or another similar service?

  • Mac hard drive name

Why is the name of my hard drive \][poiuytrewq`\ ?  The symbols seem to be causing a conflict with MAC Office 2011.  Has anyone had this issue?

When I attempt to open an Excel file, I get an error message indicating invalid path name...that it contains a symbol like \.  I've never updated my hard drive name, unless it happened when my computer was being repaired at Apple.  I've only had 2 repairs done to it:  the cd drive replaced and a small board that controls the battery charging.
I can change the name of the hard drive to something like MAC_HD_MSilva, but I wanted to make sure this wouldn't cause any issues.  From reading posts...the name doesn't seem to matter.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
    1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
    2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
    3. Go to
    Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
    Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.
    Thank you.

  • Ios upgrade stopped my external hard drives and keep changing my laptop keyboards

Latest ios upgrade stopped my computers from contacting and saving in my external hard drives and keeps changing my laptop keyboards everytime I turn it on. Please Apple solve this because I know that many people suffer from this. If you do not I will stop my almost 30 year old use of Apples.

iOS has nothing to do with devices connected to your computer.  It also has nothing to do with your keyboard.  What have you done and when?

  • "revert" deleted hard drive name in disk utility HELP!!

I booted my wifes macbook pro 10.4.11 in target mode and connected it to my computer, macbook pro 10.5.6 and went into my disk utility to create a partition in the other computer. I used my disk utility from 10.5.6 because for some reason it got erased from the 10.4.11
so I started to do 2 partitions. It said there was not enough room so I clicked on "revert" and for some reason the name of the "macintosh hd" disappeared and I ejected the computer in target mode. Then when I tried to start it up, it just kept flashing a folder with a question mark. I booted again in target mode but still no "indented" "macintosh hd". it seems like it came unmounted maybe?
I have tried starting from x key, resetting pram, trying to load from install disc (which gets to the point where it asks where to install the OS and no HD shows up to choose) and even taking it to the apple store where they said the HD is damaged and/or corrupt. Before trying to reclaim the files, if I can, I wanted to see if anyone had this same issue and if it was solvable. I cant believe that I hit "revert" and it erased my hard drive name and it automatically made my HD corrupt or damaged?
    PLEASE help anyone!
or if this is a lost cause, is there a good file recovery program where I can get my WIFES files back! Yeah, I am in trouble.
    Thanks!

If anything can be recovered at all, you should quit using the computer asap. The more you use it the more OSX will write over those spots where the files were.
    Data Rescue II...
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
    Or FileSalvage...
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?%20mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
    to recover what you can.
BUT, you'll need that other Mac with this one in FW Target Mode
BTW, don't use Leopards Disk Utility to do anything to a Tiger Hard Drive.

  • My external hard drive is suddenly locked. It doesn't unlock through 'get information' as I'm restricted to read only.

My external hard drive is suddenly locked. It doesn't unlock through 'get information' as I'm restricted to read only.

The drive has malfunctioned and corrupted itself. If that has ever happened before, or if it ever happens again, replace the drive. You may want to consider replacing it anyway for the safety of your data.
If you choose to keep using the problem drive, launch Disk Utility, select the volume, and run Repair Disk. If the volume can't be repaired, you'll have to erase it and start over. Don't do that unless you have at least two complete backups.

  • My iMac hard drive name is just backslashes

I have an iMac running OS X 10.9.4

Could be some accident, keyboard commands were chosen & highlighted
the icon of desktop items, and then later, if finder/desktop was clicked or
somehow became the default window, bumping any key could do it.
You can choose desktop items all by keyboard action, + click enter to open
in some instances. There are several shortcuts going way back to early
Mac OS that still do things. Not necessarily the same things in OS X.
    Cycling through several items on the desktop by up/down is then possible;
if you happen across the correct keys, even by accident.
{Kids are almost famous for choosing Accessibility preferences; such as
    those to turn the desktop into a chalkboard negative effect}
Not sure if you can lock a hard drive name (as you can an application)
in the case of my Macs hard drives, the shorter name in-icon uses HD
or HDD to avoid longer name issues.
I've had a few dozen/dozen Macs and some of these kinds of things are
not so new to me. On rarer occasion, a few others can still be strange...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Applescript for recognizing hard drive names (Chronosync)

I'm looking for a reliable, flexible and "idiot proof" backup system and am currently considering Chronosync for the job.
By "idiot proofing" the system I basically mean that the setup should keep track of source/destination drives in a multiple drive setup (I have a 4-bay Firewire enclosure and several removable hard drives each with a unique name) so I don't risk backing up to the wrong drives etc.
I've asked customer support at Chronosync if their software can detect hard drive names and was told it can't, but I could create an AppleScript that would prompt me to connect a drive, and set that as a pre-sync script in the Options Panel of ChronoSync, in the Scripts section.
Unfortunately I don't know much about Chronosync, nor do I have any knowledge of Applescripting. Does anyone here know of a readily available solution or have other suggestions?

I gave that script a short test... should work. =)
Remember to check (cancel on script error) because the script creates an error when you select "Cancel Backup" in it's dialogs:
    -- 24.05.2011 hubionmac.com

  • Hi, never used support before - here goes! My Mac G4 MDD no longer shows the start up hard drive icon. The one with all my files on! It shows the other 3 hard drive icons and boots up OK. Has my start up hard drive failed? Can it be fixed? Thanks.

Hi, never used support before - here goes!
My Mac G4 MDD no longer shows the start up hard drive icon. The one with all my files on!
It shows the other 3 hard drive icons and boots up OK.
Has my start up hard drive failed? Can it be fixed?
    Thanks.
    Machine Name: Power Mac G4
      Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
      CPU Type: PowerPC G4  (3.2)
      Number Of CPUs: 2
      CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
      Memory: 2 GB
      Bus Speed: 167 MHz
      Boot ROM Version: 4.5.7f1

Doesn't sound like any hard drive failure to me - more a Finder preference.
Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> Hard disks
The startup disk is sometimes treated differently from other disks (such as external and network disks) and I'm guessing this is a simple preference setting, although I might be wrong.

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?
Can someone advise as to whether i can do the following:
Future Internet connection -------------------TIME CAPSULE (containing all files) -------------- Backed up on the WD 2T Hard-drive I have
(not connected yet)                                         I                                                          (*connected to timecapsule physically)

(used for remote working)       (Used for home working)     (used for heavy CAD and rendering)    (not being used for anything at the moment)        (& iPods)
I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)
    Kind Regards
    Joe

The diagram was supposed to look more like this......

I have all my music on an external hard drive. I just transferred all my files to a new hard drive . How do I sync all my files with my itunes library without losing all my playlists etc and keep everything intact?

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

  • Can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop to use files on the airport?

can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop and use files on the airport time capsule?

If you mean an AirPort base station other than the Time Capsule, it doesn't have internal storage.
If you mean a Time Capsule, its internal drive can be used for regular file storage but shouldn't be; as with all drives, it'll eventually fail. You're better off using a standalone drive and setting Time Machine to back it up as well.

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.
