Hard Drive Needs Repair - Cannot Be Fixed?

I've been having trouble with my MBP as of late.
The problem first originated when I was having trouble with some DJ equipment that uses an external hard drive. When I called the tech support for the DJ equipment, I was told to run Disk Utility on both the external and laptop hard drives. The external came back clean but the hard drive on the MBP gave reason for distress.
I clicked "Verify Disk" and it begins to run. It finds a few issues and says "Volume Macintosh HD needs repair." and allows me to input my password. However, at that point, a new window pops up saying that "Underlying task failed to unmount" and then goes back to the Disk Utility window. My concern is that after that window closes, the "Repair Disk" button is still grayed out so not only is there a problem, I cannot fix it.
The computer has been acting weird lately as well, like deleting all shortcuts on the left side of the Finder except my user shortcut, desktop, network, and Macintosh HD (ie: Apps, Docs, Music, Pics, and Movies disappeared).
Any suggestions? I have AppleCare till mid-2009.

You try Disk Utility first. Insert your Tiger installer disk and restart while holding down the 'c' key. Select your language and then from the menu>Utilities>Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and then Repair Disk.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

  • Hard Drive needs repair? - if so, how?

    Dear all,
I have used the Disk Utility software to check my hard drive and it gave me an error message. I used "Verify Disk" and the message was the following: "Disk Utility stopped verifying Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: "Filesystem verify or repair failed." In addition to this, in the details shown in the little window under "First Aid" the following message came up: "The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired."
Since the button "Repair Disk" was unavailable, I tried the "Verify Disk Permissions" button. Once permissions verification was completed (although a number of errors were reported in the detailed report given), I tried the "Repair Disk Permissions" button. The result of this latest action was again a series of error messages in the detailed report but at the end the permissions repair was completed. At the end of this process I was still not able to "Repair Disk."
I am writing to see based on your experiences what is the likely problem in my HD and secondly how I can fix the HD. What should I do to repair the HD?
Any suggestions and thoughts would be most appreciated.
    Regards,
    R

First off: Back up any and all critical data right away.
You need to start up from your Leopard disc and use Disk Utility (from the Installer Menu) to repair your hard drive. If any errors can't be repaired, try again. If they still can't be repaired, your options are to invest in Disk Warrior (about $100) or erase your hard drive, reinstall the OS and restore your data.

  • Hard drive needing repairs far too often

lately, I've had issues with my boot disk (internal HD). it tells me that I need to repair it every other day. what can I do to fix the issue? I've been repairing it, but it never seems to get fully 'fixed'! thanks

Wan, Try running your Apple Hardware Test . It's not perfect, but may flag something.
You may have a hard drive going bad or bad RAM causing directory corruption, something like that. Maybe not the whole Mac going south.
A more thorough test for RAM is the free Rember.
    Use the extended test also.
Here's a nice faq on RAM testing.

  • After upgrade to Leopard OS thinks my External Hard Drive Needs Repairs

After I upgraded to Leopard on my POWERBOOK G4, on startup with my Seagate External HD 400GB (ST3400601-CBRK)hooked up with Firewire, The OS displays a message DISK REPAIR and locks the Seagate giving me "limited fucntionality," basically I can't use it.
If I run Disk Utility, I don't get the repair option, only verify. When I hit "verify" it tells me it can't do anything because the disk needs repairs.
On the Seagate already is an eDrive Partition with TechTool Platinum It shows everything is fine The Disk in 100% good shape - no fragments, The Files and Finder index are all fine.
Does anyone have an idea what's wrong?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If the problem remains, update to 10.6.8 and repeat.

  • 2007 MBP Screen replaced now hard drive needs replaced

Ok me and my wife brought our MBP to a computer guy( a non apple authroized repair guy ) to get the screen replaced. When we picked it up the computer started acting funny and 1 1/2 weeks later the computer would not even start up. My wife just left the apple store and they called her back saying the hard drive needs to be replpaced. I have a strong feeling that these computer techs that fixed the screen did something to our MBP. Is there anyway I can prove this? I called them and they said before they do any repairt they check the hard drive and make sure it passes thier test. Once it dopes thay went ahead and repaired the screen. They said they don't even go inside the computer to fix the screen.
    THanks.

You also have to sometimes accept that everytime you open up and unplug things, you run the risk of disturbing something.
No matter how experienced you are, I have seen many times where just the act of swapping a CPU or changing RAM has triggered a failure elsewhere in the system.
I think the culprit of these occurances is voltage remaining in the capacitors. It is widely acknowledged that holding the power button down for 30 seconds after unplugging devices can restore function, so it is equally likely that failiing to do so, and failing to release the charge held in the capacitors before doing work can lead to internal discharges when plugging and unplugging devices and therefore lead to unwittingly damaging equipment.
    Just a theory though.....

  • The Elements 12 Mac disk works fin - I also have a Dell, and the Windows disk will not run at all, sounds like it's grinding, and is almost impossible to remove from the hard drive.  I cannot find any place to tell me who to CALL to ask for a replacement!

    Hi Samcat,
You can use a download instead of the disk as an alternative: Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 | Adobe you can license with your serial
Please test the disk in another windows machine to check if it's caused by the drive or the disk. If you tested with 2 drives please start a support case, i assume Adobe will only provide downloads at this point. They are the same as the trials. If you still need a disk you can burn the trial to a disk as a backup disk. Good luck!

I had my hard drive cleaned and cannot install cs6 master collection from disk.  I am getting error message failed to initialize.  please download adobe advisor support.  I am using a pc and have windows 8.  Please help.

start at the top and work your way down applying applicable fixes until your problem is resolved.
    if cc (win):  https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-desktop-application-failed.html
    if, your error is:
"Installer failed to initialize. File not found." or "Installer failed to initialize. This could be due to missing files."
first, rename OOBE Folder to OOBE.old.
    to find OOBE:
64 bit win OS: Program Files x86\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
32 bit win OS: Program Files \Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
    mac os: HD>library>application support>adobe>caps
    mac os: USER>library>application support>adobe>OOB
if that fails or isn't the exact error you see, uninstall, clean (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and reinstall.
if you're using a dvd to install:
copy the disc contents to a desktop directory and install from that directory.
    if you're using a mac:
    1. Try to Create a new user account in Mac with Administrator Priviledges.
    2. Login to the New user, Navigate to Mac HD> Application> Utilities> Adobe Installer folder, Locate products like Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air and un-install them
    3. Navigate to User Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    4. Navigate to Mac HD> Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    5. Start the installation again.
if everything applicable above fails, check your installation logs:

Take it straight back to the store for replacement. It is faulty.. there is no fix you can do from outside. Even if there was, I would still say it is Apple's problem.. and a disk should never go bad in that length of time..
You would think after the debacle with Seagate drives in the imacs they would never touch them again.

Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?
