Hard Drive No Longer Showing Up In My Computer

I Purchased an HP Pavilion dv7-6188ca Entertainment Notebook PC back in December of 2011 and had no problems up until this point. I noticed today that my secondary internal hard drive is no longer working. It doesn't show up in My Computer any longer, nor the computer BIOS. I noticed a small dent to the right of the touchpad and was thinking that a family member may have dropped something on it. I want to know if there is anything that can be done to try and at least recover the data on it. Any suggestions would be helpful. I also checked in Administrative Tools and the drive doesn't show up there either.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. I haven't done anything recently to change settings on the computer or anything either.

I fixed it!
You have to go into your Pictures folder and delete the iPhone Photo Cache folder....then it will recreate it and successfully sync!!
It still does not show up in My Computer but I think if I reconnect my iPOD and enable Disk-Access, that that may resolve that small problem as well

  • External Hard Drive no longer showing in Devices

My external hard drive no longer shows up as a device on my MBP. It has worked fine since the day I plugged it in.
The Time Machine is using the HD, and continues to do it's backups, so power and USB connection is not an issue
The HD shows up in Disk Utility (The Time Machine portion AND the partition that I've been using for storage)
I ran a repair on the partition in Disk Utility and it checks out OK
I can access this partition from VMware Fusion, so the windows side of the MBP sees it, and it's operational
Used the HD all day yesterday without issue
I've restarted the MBP to see if it would find the HD partition after a restart, it doesn't
I've unplugged (USB) and powered-off the HD, and when I power-on, it still isn't seen.
    Any ideas?

If TM is turned on and it still doesn't show up then do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External hard drive no longer shows up connected

I have been using a Seagate Freeagent 500 GB external HD as a backup storage device for my Windows 7, 64 bit computer. After working well for several years it did not respond the last time I tried to back up and shows up as "disconnected" when
I search for the HD in device manager or control panel.  It was assigned Drive I but that drive no longer shows up under drives.  I have tried different USB ports without success. Oddly, the audible signal sounds when I remove the USB cable from
a port but does not sound when I reinsert it.  I also tried powering down the hard drive and powering up again without success.

    Hi,
If other PCs can show this external hard drive, You can try the following steps to clear the write-protected flag to see what's going on:
Open a command with administrator privilege:
    type--> diskpart
    type--> list volume
    type--> select volume #
    type--> attributes disk clear readonly

  • External Hard drive no longer showing up

    Hi all,
    hope you can help.
I have an external hard drive that I use as a TIme Machine Drive, the other day my wife decided I was wasting electricy by having the hard drive on, si se turned it off without ejecting it, thanks love.
Now the Hard drive wont show up on the desk top, I've ched the system preferences ans that's set to show extrernal hard drives.
Profiler shows the USB hard drive as there.
Disk Utility shows the hard drive, Wrong name but the right serial number. but it wont let me repair, erase or partition.
Suggestions on how to get this fixed would be epic, I'm guessing that my iMac just didn'y like it when the drive wasn't ejected correctly, I'm hoping there is away to sort the problem without replacing the drive.
    Thanks guys.

  • External hard drive no longer shows up on Desktop

    Hi everyone,
I did what a good person should do with a tech issue and did a long search through forums before I resigned to bothering you all with it.
I've had a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Media external hard drive for 6 months which up until this week, was showing up as an icon on my Desktop. I had named it Eid HD.
I suddenly am unable to access this drive on my MacBook Pro. The Desktop icon has disappeared but the drive still lights up as per normal. I'm using OS X v10.6.8
    I tried changing USB cables.
The drive appears in Disk Utility as follows (the yellow icons):
I read somewhere that I needed to mount it. The first yellow icon doesn't have the mount option. The second one (Eid HD) has the option but when I mount it, I get the following message:
    Mount Failed.
The disk “Eid HD” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.
I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
Tried to mount - same error message as above. Mount failed.
I downloaded Disk Warrior and although the drive appears in there, I can't do anything with it. The Graph and Rebuild buttons are both greyed out.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?
The files are still on the drive as I used it on a Windows machine to test it.
I don't want to format it.
Please help if you can, thank you in advance.
    Sam

I verified and repaired (First Aid) the disk. Results:
That quote is from your first post.  But I have some questions about that (maybe just to satisfy my own curiosity).
    1.  When you ran Disk Utility First Aid did you do it on the disk itself (the one that is enabled with the Seagate title)?
    2. That First Aid window title line says "First Aid: EID HD" yet my DU window title only shows the name exactly as it appears in the left panel, no "First Aid:" prefix.  So is that a change in 10.6.8 (I use 10.6.5)?
    3. You display shows lines like "Verifying folders", "Folders verification completed", and "Verifying $...".  Again I have never seen DU display that kind of info.  Another 10.6.8 change?
As I said, I am only curious.  It may not mean anything.  But I thought I would point out these details just in case.
If these aren't 10.6.8 changes (I find it hard to believe apple would change DU after all these years just from 10.6.5 to 10.6.8) then just what DU First Aid were you running?

  • WD MyBook External Hard Drive No Longer Showing Up

After the Yosemite update, I can no longer see my Western Digital MyBook external hard drive when I plug it into my MacBook. I've been up and back between Apple Support and the WD support forums for about three weeks now and I'm not seeing anything helpful about this situation. I cannot access a bunch of stuff because of this problem. No one is saying whether or not it will be addressed at all let alone supplying a solution... Does anyone have any info at all about this?

If TM is turned on and it still doesn't show up then do a SMC reset.

  • I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.9.2 USB Hard Drive no longer shows

I just upgraded to Maverick 10.9.2 and my external hardrive (Toshiba Canvio Basic 3.0 Portable Hard Drive, PN#HDTB210XK3BA) is no longer appearing on my desk top when I plug it in.  It shows in the Disk Utliity and I have tried doing a verify as well as a repair and I stilll get the same message...
"Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."
I did a backup just prior to updating to Maverick so I know the external drive still works.  Plus I am able to see the files on my PC when I plug it in to there.
I did try resetting the SMC and the NVRAM/PRAM.
I plugged other externa; drives in (Maxtor, Seagate, etc) and again they did not show on the desk top but did show in Disk Utlity.
I see this has happened to several folks but am wondering how they got it fixed.

You need the printer drivers for Mavericks.. have you loaded them?
You can expect issues as lots of printers are not yet up to date with Mavericks.. if you can find drivers. delete all the previous printers and start over using the new drivers.

  • WD Hard Drive no longer showing up, but it is running

    Hello all,
I have a WD 3200MT external hard drive that I plug in through USB. It has always worked no matter what operating system I have upgraded to (Currently running Yosemite on my Macbook Pro 13in mid 2012).
Today when I plugged it in I noticed that it made my trashcan full on my desktop. I figured it had something to do with all the stuff I have deleted off of the WD external drive. I "emptied trashcan" and it started emptying thousands of items. Some items were even running and it asked if I should skip them and continue. I let it go for a few minutes and then figured something wasn't right. I unplugged it (Just pulled it out) and now I can not get it to show back up when I plug it in. I can feel the external drive running and the lights are on, but nothing appears on my Macbook.
My trashcan shows a "Recovered files" and "Recovered Files #1" folders. Can anyone help me out? I have tried searching all over.
    Thanks!

After being plugged in for 30 minutes, this just popped up on my screen.

  • HT201250 my external hard drive no longer shows up

I use a LaCie external hardrive for my Time Machine backup on my iMac..  Since October 24th 2012, my Imac no longer recognizes my LaCie..., and in fact no external hard drive is recognized.  When I open up Time Machine it asks me to set up another Time Capsule.??  Has somethingchanged either in the operating system [OS X 10.7.5] or with iCloud that would be affecting this?  My La Cie turns on and sounds like its working, and I have checked the power supply.

    Hi baltwo and Miacc,
I also have a LaCie ext HD of 1T and OS 10.7.5. Since Dec 24th 2012 I haven't been able to mount the LaCie disk. I can see it in the Disk Utility but I cannot mounted. I verified the disk and even repaired it but nothing has happened, actually there is nothing wrong with the disk, but it cannot be mounted.
I did what you suggested baltwo but I'm in the same situation as before. I cannot mount the disk and/or do Time Machine.
    Any suggestions?

  • Hard Drive no longer shows up

I just bought a new iMac with Tiger. I still have my old iMac that I bought back in '02 which is ancient using 10.2. When I set up my new iMac I turned my old one off but planned to boot it back up, start jotting down bookmarks and then take it to the Mac store for them to transfer all of my files. I did a shutdown on my old Mac and after several minutes it still wouldn't shut down so I reached around back and shut it down. Since then it takes forever to boot it up and when my desktop does finally come up, my top doc with the date, time, etc. as well as my HD icon do not show up. Sometimes the top doc does show up but when I try and do a shut down from there it still won't shut down. I am concerned that for some reason my HD is gone and all is lost. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Are you able to start up with the install disc, to run Repair Disk.
Have you tried to run the Apple Hardware Test disc?
You should also use Firewire Target Disk Mode, to attempt to retrieve the data from the older iMac.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

  • Why do my external hard drives no longer show up on my desktop?

I have three external harddrives all of which are connected through different ports, all show up in finder, all show up in disk utility, but none of them will show up on my desktop. I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing. Any ideas?

Are the disks self powered? Try a SMC Reset:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • Catalogs,my external hard drive used to show up as its own folder in my folders but for some reason it now showers up as an extension of my internal HD for my Mac . In finder it shows my External drive is a folder called volumes, along with my Mac hard dr

For some reason my external hard drive no longer shows  up as its own folder, instead it shares a folder named volumes with my Macs HD, whats the best way to move it.?

I have the same problem.  Let me know when you find a fix.

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. racergirl,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?

  • HELP! External hard drive won't show up in finder!

Last night, I was updating my macbook (from August 2008, still runs on leopard) and it needed to restart. I forgot to eject my LaCie Porsche 1tb external hard drive first and, when it rebooted, I got the error of death (aka "disk was not ejected..."). When connected to the USB port, the drive lights up, I can hear it spinning, but it won't show up in finder and I can't see it in Disk Utility to repair it (after the first error of death, the computer wouldn't even acknowledge that I had the drive plugged in). I've tried plugging it into the different USB ports and even on a different macbook, but no luck in getting the computer to recognize it long enough to use Disk Utility or DiskWarrior. Any tips on how I can get my macbook to read the drive again?

If the external hard drive is not showing up in Disk Utility when connected to two or more different computers, then the problem is with the hard drive, it is broken. Get a new one.

  • LR 5 my external hard drive no longer appears as a hard drive but as a folder under "Volumes"

I am running LR 5 on a MacBook pro and my external hard drive no longer appears as a hard drive but as a folder under "Volumes". will this affect my ability to search and store in this external hard drive?  How can I get it back to normal?

I just started having the same problem, oddly enough with a LaCie 500GB D2 Quadra external. Had it connected via FW800 then suddenly it won't appear in the Finder.
It shows up as an "Unknown Device" in the System Profiler under the FireWire Bus.
I do need the data on it so which solution is easier?
Replace the housing? Or am I better off calling LaCie and using the warrenty?
    Thanks,
    Shannon
