Hard drive noise & problem displaying photos

I have a 2 day old Ipod Video. I uploaded photos and when I try to display them, the hard drive vibrates slightly and makes noise. Plus, it takes forever for the Photo Library to load. I do not have this problem playing music or videos. Sounds like I may need to return it. Any input would be appreciated.

It is normal for the library to take long to load sometimes, depending on how many photos you have. Happens to mine too once in awhile. Are pictures totally not loading or are they just taking awhile to load?

  • Periodic hard drive noise problem...

I’m on an old Mac G5 tower, with OSX 10.5.6. Nearly every day, every second of every hour, like clockwork, for as long as I can recall, my hard drive makes a periodic little noise like it’s being read from. This happens even when I shut off all applications. What is going on, and how can I detect what is doing this and stop it? It can’t be good on the life of the hard drive, right?

    Hi markp12345;
Snapz Pro X is not an Apple product. It is something from Ambrosia Software that allows you to record what is happening on your screen. If you uninstalled it, you might have to reboot to get it out of memory.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can also try SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may detect impending drive failure sooner.
    Good luck!

  • Disharging with USB, Freezing on Sync, Hard Drive noise on Line Out

I have been dealing with three issues with my 60GB iPod click wheel with color display (Photo).
The first is something that slowly creeped in, which is hard drive noise that is audible through the line out when the iPod is charging in a dock. I'd like to say it's like a ground loop issue, but it's in my car, on my iHome, and on my apple dock when plugged into power on a stereo system. It sounds like the spinning of the hard drive is correlated to the noise.
Second, over the past year or so, I've noticed that when I have the iPod plugged into any mac using USB, the iPod discharges. My friend has noticed the same problem on her 40GB 3rd generation iPod. We've tried them on several computers. Firewire connection, no problem, only USB when plugged into a computer, not the power adapter.
Just recently, the iPod froze up iTunes and the rest of my Mac (G4 MDD Dual 1gHz, OS X 10.4.10, iTunes 7.4.2) during sync. I made reformatted the iPod using Disk Utility, Restored to iPod, making sure to plug into power to finish the restore, then attempted to resync. Two attempts of this and I get the same result, a freeze.
The first two issues, I've adapted with, but this last one is just frustrating. I will attempt to sync using a firewire cable, but that should not be the solution. This iPod came with a USB cable, it should charge and sync with one. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thank you!

ok I went here for instruction on how to take it apart since I wasn't having much luck on my own:
    http://www.flexbeta.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=20&t=8269
his tip worked for me so far. hopefully this won't be just a temporary fix:
Good tip: if your iPod seems dead and the hard drive is throwing errors pull out the connection at the bottom of the ipod mainboard and plug it back in, this will hard reset your ipod and worked a few times for me

  • Hard Drive noise on iMac

Seems if I tilt the monitor down more the hard drive noise gets louder... Is this a common issue with the new Intel based iMacs? I will have to check but computer was also in sleep mode for awhile so not sure if this still happens... It isn't too loud... but if it says like this it will be annoying...

Happened today on my new Macbook Pro, 15-inch i7 while editing in final cut. Has happened several times before this, as well. Never had this problem while editing on other computers, including an older Macbook Pro and also a 2.26 Ghz dual Quad Core tower.
The clip that caused the blowout had the following audio: 16-bit integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 19.2 Khz.
My sequence settings for audio are currently 16-bit, 48 Khz, Channel grouped.
Please get around to fixing this, folks at Apple. I work as an editor and I currently can't wear headphones for fear of blowing out my eardrums.

  • Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow?

Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow? Totally 8 gb speed system but now very slow . Please give some suggestions

Another thing you can do in Lion (and ML) is click on the "Info" button in Disk Utility to get the SMART status of the drive. It's more detailed now than it used to be and it might tell you if something is wrong.
A lot can go wrong with a hard drive which is why I tend to point people to the downloads section of the following web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
They have a free hard drive troublleshooting download book there. I reccommend people download that before asking questionis because there are tons of problems that can act like hard drive problems when there's nothing wrong with the system at all. For example, how full is the drive? How many applications are running? What's the status of Spotlight indexing? How many apps are you running? How much memory do you have?
I could probably think up 20 or 30 more if needed.

  • How do I backup my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and keep my photos grouped by their events?

How can I backup my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and keep my photos grouped by their events?

I have attempted to make sure my iPhoto library has been backed up on the external hard drive and that it is safe to delete some events from my internal hard drive
You need to think this through.
Time Machine is a back up application. It keeps a rolling back up of the data. It's called rolling because it means you can revert to the data you had on a specific date and time. But that's not eternal, and as time goes by, and your drive fills up, older backups are deleted. So if you delete Events on your Mac they will - eventually - also be deleted from the Time Machine back up.
If you wan tot archive data hendon't use Time Machine for that job. Here's how you might archive an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Is it possible to reorder an iPhoto book 2 years later? My hard drive crashed and the photo book is no longer in my iPhoto but Apple printed it for me before the crash.  Would Apple still be able to print another copy?

For future books you might consider doing what I do:  create a separate library for each book andcopy the photos for the book from your working library to the book library with iPhoto Library Manager.
When the book is completed and ordered burn the library package to a CD, DVD or external HD to archive it so it's available for editing and reordering at a later date if needed.

    Hi Clarkett99,
To use an external hard drive for your iTunes library, see the steps in this article -
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them.  This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto.  I cannot open iPhoto now.  Can someone help please?

What is the file system of that external HD? is it MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
Which iPhoto version do you have?
If you directly select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and use "File > Get Info", does the library still show as "Kind: iPhoto Library" and is the file size correct for 22000 Photos?
If the library does no longer have the correct size, restore it from your backup.
But if the library has the correct size, try to open it directly by clicking it. This should work, if your iPhoto version is iPhoto '11.

  • I recently used an external hard drive to back up photos etc from my mac, I didn't do a full system back up. Since then a finder window titled 'client node' keeps popping up every time i hit the spacebar. Can anyone help me please stop this happening?

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Is your mpb 17" c2d hard drive noise acceptable?

I got 17" mbp two days ago, i even couldn't notice the hard drive noise while daily using since I either turned my tv on or playing music. But in the mid night, I have to turn off the TV, trun off the music or at least turn down the volumn, then I noticed that the hard drive noise. While downloading files, or opening some big files, it just sounds scary and horrible, I have the stocked 5400rpm 160GB hitatchi hard drive. Do you guys get the same issue? Is that acceptable?
btw, I'd use a compaq laptop for 3 years, no that sound at all. Just dont know why Apple couldn't put a quiet hard drive into the mbp.

Unfortunately not all drives are quiet, or in extreme cases even quiet. There is even variance within the same model drives. The thing is, what you need to determine is what is considered "reasonable". Drive noise, which is normally head chatter (the drive head moving backa and forth) is inevitable and to some degree we all have to live with it.
If you are truly concerned over the noise your drive makes then I would contact AppleCare and discuss it with them. I had a drive replaced due to noise although that wasn't "head chatter" rather a squealing spindle.

  • My 7th generation ipod classic is making some hard drive noises...it makes me feel so worried that it might be a hard drive issue!

Please help me and advise if i should be changing my ipod.
is there any ipod 7th generation that does not make this hard drive noises? or is this the case with all the ipods???
I'm not feeling well about this issue, as i just noticed while surfing through my songs!

What you are hearing is the sound of the iPod's internal hard drive spinning up to read data from disk for playback. So basically, what you are hearing is completely normal for the iPod Classic. If you still feel that it is unusually loud, find another person with an iPod Classic and compare them. If your iPod is louder, it could be signs of a faulty/damage drive, but don't be sure quick to jump to conclusions.

New iMac. Flash drive is primary for OS and apps.  I want to use my HD 2 (1 TB hard drive) for my bulky photo and music files.  Can I direct iPhoto and iTunes to use the larger hard drive as the primary target when importing?

Yes.  Unfortunately, I don't know the specifics because I don't use iPhoto anymore and I completely copied over 15 years of MP3 files recently when I installed 10.7.  Needless to say, I have not opened iTunes since and probably never will again - not because of iTunes but because of my stupidity.  I did have some of the files backed up but I hadn't backed up in a while.......anyway....
When I imported my CD's, I had them go directly to my external firewire.  I can't remember exactly how to set it, but in the preference section of iTunes you can specify an import destination to any drive that's available to your machine.  I did this with iPhoto as well way back at one point when I was using Tiger, but I don't remember the specifics on that either.  I can't imagine they would have discontinued support for that feature since then.
    Sorry I couldn't help more.

  • IMac 2009 (21 inch) making hard drive noises during sleep mode - normal??

    Hi there guys,
I have an iMac 21 inch (2009) , 3ghz C2D, 4GB Ram, 1TB hard drive (the hard drive was upgraded straight thru apple, when i bought it i paid extra for a 1tb hard drive, its not a DIY hard drive upgrade)
aniways, I recently noticed that during sleep mode, occasionally (not all the time) I can hear some faint clicking / hard drive noise, which is really weird because i put the imac in sleep mode and it really shouldnt be doing that no?
My 13 inch macbook pro 2010 never does this in sleep mode, its always dead silent
Im just wondering if this hard drive accessing / clicking noise during sleep mode is normal in imacs??

Im just wondering if this hard drive accessing / clicking noise during sleep mode is normal in imacs?
No it should not be doing anything but sleeping. The SMC controls sleep, try resetting it.
    Reset the SMC
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Detach the computer's power cord.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Reattach the computers power cable.
    • Turn on the computer.
