Hard drive not exist

Took me ages to get this far on the site, too many loops holes to back where you started! Just strange why it gives you an option to email HP but you can't :/
Anyway... I clumsilly dropped a book on the trackpad of my HP Pavilion dv6-3123sa the hard drive test reveals that my drive does not exist and I just cannot get into the drive at all to try and recover it. So can HP help me with my drive? My notebook is out of warranty and I'd like to know how much it will cost to fix the drive or have a replacement equivelent that has all the HP stuff on it.

You can try to remove and reseat the drive. It may have jarred loose in the fall.
More than likely it is broken though and you need to buy a replacement.

You cannot buy a hard drive from HP or anywhere that already has the operating system and software installed.
If you want that, you need to order a set of recovery disks for your notebook.

You can also make your own windows 7 installation DVD, but you will have to live with whatever software is available for download on your notebook's support and driver page.
Here's how to do that...
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.

This is a problem I've never had before... This is not my laptop, so I don't know the previous state.
I had to replace the system board on a g60-600 because it would not power on. Ordered a new one, swapped it out, and now it turns on. Yay!
However, no hard drive is found. This is where it gets fun...
I am going to refer to the laptop I worked on as Laptop A with hard drive A. I have another laptop/drive that I will call B.
Hard drive A is NOT detected when installed in laptop A.
Hard drive A is detected when installed in laptop B.
Hard drive B is detected when installed in laptop A.
Hard drive B is detected when installed in laptop B.
CMOS was all reset when the system was dismantled.
-- When I first turned it on I got a Checksum error; I entered in the current date and time with no luck.
-- I unplugged the system, removed the battery, and held the power button for 1 minute. No joy.
-- I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes to reset everything again. Still nothing.
-- I have reseated the drive multiple times with no improvement.
-- I assume that the new motherboard does not have an updated BIOS; I'm trying to figure out a way to update it if a new one exists (haven't checked yet).
Any ideas?

And now it works. I reset CMOS again and reseated the hard drive again. That's officially the 6th time I did that. Ah well, I just wish I knew what changed.
Now Windows is giving me "Your computer was unable to start" but that's another issue all together.

I just purchased a laptop hp dv6 and tried to boot up and it said that I don't have a hard drive and I need an operating system. I check the drive and it has no error on my desktop and everything seems to be in order. Can my connection sata wire goes bad? That's why it can't find my main hard drive? And how do I go about fixing this problem?

If you have reseated the hdd to insure good connection with no luck, try resetting BIOS to Default settings.Enter BIOS by tapping the F10 key immediately after powering on. Once into BIOS setup, tap the F5 key to reset to Default settings (may be F9,check bottom of screen for correct key) then Save & Exit.

Yes indeed, seems to me like your HDD went Poo Poo on you!
Hopefully you ave made recovery disks, and the better option would be a Mirror Image.
I had 3 Seagate momentus 7200.4 FAIL the SMART TEST in the 1st 7 months of owning my laptop.
HP finally replaced it with a Hitachi the last time it came back from warranty repair.
I replaced the HDD with a SSD,
The 2nd SG drive was replaced with the Hitachi,
GOOD BY SEAGATE!

Hard Disc Not Exist

To start at the beginning; Just under 3 years ago, my ex wife bought my daughter (then 12) an HP G56-105SA.
A year ago my daughter moved back in with me, and brought it with her.
Just the lap-top and power supply. No Recovery discs; no manuals; just the bits she used.
Last week... she had teen-age hissy-fit, because it didn't work... this became MY problem.
Of course, being ancient and obtuse and a PAIR-RENT...I am probably missing the obviouse, like that it's almost Christmas, and what she really wants is a new i-pad.... but she ent getting one... not off me least ways, so I'm stuck trying to fix this thing, so she can do her home-work, and be doubly ungreatful!
So to the facts.
1/ I started by switching it on.... which resulted in black screen and 'No Bootable Device' message.
2/ Turned PC over, undid HDD cover; removed HDD, and cable; re-seated & replaced; turned on again. No Change.
3/ Removed HDD - Plugged into spare SATA slot on my desk-top.
Curiousely, it threw up four drived;
E: which appeared to be a ghost, with nothing on and capacity of the discs full 250Gb.
F: Which was her C: Operating System partition; aprox 170Mb with all windows directories present and accessible.
M: HP Restore
N: HP Tools
As suspected... her C-Drive (My F) was chocka-block with barely 3% free space.
3.1/ I took my life in my own hands... and deleted six seasons of 'Glee'..... and transfered the less than a dongle sized directory called 'Home Work' to my desk-top. I emptied her recycle bins.
3.2/ I ran disc tools on my (Win XP) desk top; and applied Disc Clean Up. Took a while, and I dont think freed much.
3.3/ I ran disc tools....... and applied Scan Disc, full scan and fix... and 24 hours later it told me it had fixed things!
3.4/ I ran De-Frag... and another 24 hours later.. it looked reletively healthy; with about 40% free space.
4/ Returned Hard disk to Lap-Top.... pressed start.... same black screen! Pressed f2, used diagnostics; got 'Hard disc Not Exist'
5/ Asked Daughter if she had the HP Factory Restore discs..... she looked at me as only a teenager looking at ancient, obtuse, and utterly STOOOPID pair-rent can.... you know, like she had discovered something unsavory on the sole of her shoe, she had never seen before...... with added contempt.
Phone calls and text messages in her bedroom followed; the unhelpful conclusion of which was... "Mum says, you just run Recovery from the Hard Drive" ... aparently she had argued that actually when teh computer was first switched on, it would have asked to 'make' recovery DVD's.... but aparently her big-brother had sorted that all out, and said you didn't need them, as it was... on the hard drive.... Can ANYONE tell me why I married the woman? I'm SURE there must have been a reason... but for the life of my I cant think what it could have been!
6/ I returned HDD to my desk-top. I found the pdf user manual, and found the 'make restore disc' instructions & tried running the make program on my desk-top.... it refused telling me what I already knew... my desk-top isn't an HP G56!
7/ HASSLED as home-work was now due, and she couldn't print it off my Desk-Top, as I dont have the latest version of MS Office she uses at school..... I went back to basics; pulled Windows 7 install disc from the draw, went to HP support and down-loaded ALL the driver files for an HP G56-105SA...
8/ WIPED THE LAP-TOP HARD DRIVE - in XP on desk-top, removed all partitions, then re-formatted the disc, ready for 'fresh' install of Windows 7 and 7 alone, without all the HP factory pre-installs.... get it running, and then worry about installing whatever software she wants/needs after seperately; and with bit of luck, without partisions or extraniouse would-you-like-fries-with-that programs cluttering it up; might give a bit more space so takes a bit longer till its clogged with 'glee' again.
9/ Inserted HDD in Lap-Top. Switched on... opened DVD draw; switched off. Inserted Windows 7 disc; switched on.
ALL looked very promicing, and Got windows back-ground, USB mouse, and win 7 install prompts... up to "Select partition to install operating system'.
HDD showed in the drop-down box as 'Disc 0' with full 250Gb available and healthy
BUT message below "Windows 7 cannot install on this divice - Not bootable" clicking for details... said check bios to ensure HDD management enabled.
10/ Switched off, went into bios... NO options for doing anything with HDD as far as I could see; while 'system diagnostics' chucked out error message "Hard disc Not Exist"
11/ Repeated Windows install... and at prompt tried putting in DVD of down-loaded HP Drivers to load a disc controller... told me there were no drivers on the DVD ( they were all executables I presume intended to be run after Windows install)
12/ My 'data' Hard-Drive was sat on teh desk where I had removed it to plug in her lap-top disc. JUST for reference... I removed her Lap-top HDD and plugged my Desk-Top HDD in to see if the lap-top would recognise ANY disk... answer no it didn't.
SO... it would appear that the Lap-Top HDD is 'OK' we have fault on the Lap-Top, which recognises the HDD under windows install... but not under the Bios.

BUT, whils seemingly the same problem... that was fixed by my first intuative check, taking the HDD out and replacing it.... but ent solved this one.
So what next? I'm starting to run out of inspiration... and no chance is she having a new lap-top this christmas!

then do a Windows 7 install. This time use the Microsoft store's Windows 7 DVD\USB download utility to make a usb installer.
Thanks; but I dont really want to buy another licence for an operating system (I actually dont much like!) I already have licences for, already have DVD's for, but not bought through Microsofts Down-Load platform so I dont have anything in my purchase history and so would have to buy as if new JUST to get a version that loads through a USB port.. when its loading hapily enough from DVD... just not happy to install to the HDD, its actually recognising, and I'm just as likely, I presume, to get the same problem, of it refusing to install to HDD from a new USB drive version as my existing DVD version, for the expense and trouble.... unless I'm missing a leap in the logic here?
The Microsoft DVD\USB download utility name is actually a misnomer. I don't know why Microsoft called it that. It is actually a usb installer and DVD installer creation utility. It does not require you to purchase anything. Use the license that you already have when using the USB installer during a Windows 7 installation. There is no need to buy another. Licenses are always diistinctly seperate from the installation disk(s) or ISOs. It is the same thing as a DVD installation disk except much faster.
You don't necessarily need to use an ISO image as suggested in the following video. You can also use your Windows 7 installation DVD as a source for the Windows 7 DVD\USB download tool.

Hard Disk Not Exist help please

Hi, not sure if this should be in Recovery or Hardware or Operating Systems as it involves all three!
I have an HP G61-110SA running Win 7 64 bit; product no. VR523EA. Also have serial no if needed. One problem is, as the laptop is 6 years old, it's hard to remember what came with it.
Whilst using on Thursday it suddenly froze and ctrl/alt/del didn't respond so i held down the power key to turn off. When I rebooted, I got "PXE-E61 Media Test failure; check cable. PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. No bootable device -- insert boot disc and press any key".
I don't have a boot disc as the OS came preinstalled. So here's what I've tried so far by reading other similar problems in here.
- Ive taken out the HDD and reseated it. Reboot then said Hard Disk Not Exist. Tried reseating again. Same message.
- Created a bootable Ubuntu CD and ran that - no response.
- Created a Ubuntu bootable USB and that has worked except Ubuntu isn't showing the HDD so I can't retrieve anything.
I can however connect my wireless network and at least use Ubuntu in the meantime.
I've ordered a new (same) replacement HDD (a Hitachi 320GB 2.5"). So next problem is how to reinstall Windows 7 without a recovery CD? Did the old HDD contain the recovery partition drive or would that be located elsewhere thefore still be accessible when the new HDD is installed?
If not, I'm assuming I can still purchase recovery discs from HP? I know I should be able to create my own recovery discs however, the MS sticker on the bottom of my laptop beside the laptop details, has become too faded to read the important bits! All I can see is "Proof of License, Certificate of Authenticity, Microsoft Corporation 2005" and "Label not to be sold seperately". Any letters/numbers are long gone. So would I be able to find these any other way? My friend (an IT Manager) said something about DBAN being able to read all that from the HDD but not if it's fried?!
Next problem - I was also using Office 2007 (think it was Home Premium). Either this came preinstalled (unlikely?) OR it came with a 30 day trial which I could purchase the full version & download the full version from online using a link within the trial? I think this is what I did because I have no other way of obtaining Office for Windows 7 and yet whatever version I had, had about 3 user licenses because I also installed it on my son's netbook. I do have Office XP discs for my previous desktop PC (but couldn't have used those surely on Win7)?
And just to add a gripe .... although I certainly got my money's worth out of my old laptop, I'll now have to buy a new one - which I consider a treat - BUT I'm choking at the expense of replacing all the software I need! Anything I buy new will be Windows 8 which none of my old software was compatable with - same as when I have to previously rebuy it because none of my XP software was compatable with Win7! But on the plus side, I'm assuming if I install my new HDD on my old lappy, I can also install Ubuntu to the new HDD so at least my 11yr old son can browse and surf on it via Ubuntu.

Hard Disk not exist! But spins up ok

Hey guys, I've got a HP Pavilion DV5 1000ea, which is just over 2 years old. For the last week I've frequently had a lot of trouble booting up, it seems like the hard drive isn't being recognised. I get a message saying that there's no boot device detected, and when I try to do a hard drive self test I get a "Hard Disk Not Exist" error message. At one of these two error message points I also get an error code of (3F0).
Now, I have tried taking the hard drive out of the laptop, reseating the connections both on the back of the hard drive and on the motherboard, and booting up while the hard drive is laying flat in the palm of my hand. I can feel it spin up fine, it doesn't seem to make any clicking noises like a dying hard drive might, I can even hear it reading the hard drive very briefly once or twice - but I'm still being told the hard drive doesn't exist! On boot up, the "hard disk access" LED on the laptop comes on solid for a few seconds, then goes off, and then maybe flickers on and off briefly once or twice (all while on the HP splash screen) before giving me the error. I should possibly also mention that the label on top of the hard drive looks a bit scorched, I presume that's from the heat generated from the wifi card situated beneath it.
So the short of it is, this is happening almost every time i try to boot up my laptop now. Sometimes I have to try booting up 10-15 times, but so far it has eventually always recognised the hard drive and booted up and worked perfectly fine with no issues in operation. I just feel that at this stage it's likely that someday the laptop isn't going to boot up at all.
I'm happy to replace the hard drive if that's going to sort the problem, but since it spins up fine every time with no clicking noises whether the laptop recognises it or not, I wonder if that's really what the problem is. Could it be a faulty cable between the drive and mobo? Could it be a problem on the mobo itself?
Would greatly appreciate any assistance!

Think horses not zebras. Not every hard drive error results in clicking. You likely have an issue with the electronic circuitry of the drive, not the mechanical parts, i.e. seek head or platters. A replacement green board would likely fix it but it is much easier to find a new hard drive. Am I 100% sure? No but I am 92% sure.

I'm receiving error Boot Device Not Found and Hard disk not exist when I boot up my laptop

I'm receicing the error Boot Device Not Found when i power on my HP G60-235DX laptop. After following HP's recommended troubleshooting steps, I receive error Hard disk not exist. Hmmmm....that's a little concerning. My guess is I need a new hard drive? I have the 17 recovery disks I made when I setup this laptop, however I'm not sure if they will resolve this issue. Any suggestions?

One of 3 things has happened, listed from most likely to least likely
1. Hard drive has died, replace it with one of the same size or larger, then use the HP recovery discs to re-install windows.
2, The motherboard has serious problems. (Replace the notebook)
3. The hard drive cable that connects it to the motherboard has somehow failed, not very likely. (replace the cable)
Replace the hard drive with a new one and use your recovery discs to get Windows back on it.

Compaq presario cq61-411wm no booting device error/"hard disk not exist" help!!

Did you drop the laptop? If the computer is not "seeing" the hard drive your only hope is that the hard drive got knocked loose and is still good, just not connected. Otherwise a drop that can crack a screen may well have also killed the hard drive.

Several things can cause the bios to fail recognize the hard dirive.
0. Try loading bios defaults, save changes on exit of bios, see iff the error persists.
1. Bad hard drive (try another hard drive)
2. Bad hard drive data cable (replace cable)
3. Failed hard drive controller on the motherboard (replace motherboard)

Presario CQ61 - Boot Device not found, Hard dis not exist

Hi i bought my presario CQ61-405AX 2nd hand roughly a year ago and it was almost new, my laptop was running fine, and then it froze, and so i had to turn it off, after i waited 30min for it to unfreeze, it now, when i boot it up, appears with a black screen, with the error
"Boot Device Not Found
Pleae install a operating system on your hard disk
F2 system diagnostiscs"
I went onto hp support and followed the prompts until it did a hard disk test and the error, "Hard Disk Not Exist" appeared
I have no idea how to fix it, i am running Windows 7 home premium, and i fear i may have to buy another hard drive

Hi,
The most likely explanation is that your Hard Drive has failed and will need to be replaced, however as a further test, try the following.
1. Create a bootable Ubuntu CD - a guide on creating an Ubuntu CD and the download can be found Here.
2. When created, follow the guide on the link below to Try Ubuntu.

The 'Try Ubuntu' option runs the OS from the CD without the need to install on your HDD. If this runs Ok ( it will be slow running from a CD ), this would tend to confirm that the problem is with the HDD.

Boot device not found, hard disk not exist.... does that mean my computer is dead?

Suspecting that Im in a world of hurt here. I tried turning on my computer and it says "boot device not found" - run in test failed... when I hit F4 and run a hard disk test it says "hard disk not exist". The memory test passes, but under the boot device not found it says in blue "please install an operating system on your hard disk"... and to make matters worse it's making some funny noises when it tries to boot.
Is there any hope at all that this computer will work again? Is there any chance that any of the things I had on my hard disk can be recovered?

dv5 still isn't enough info for me to provide the service manual (in case there are differerent ones for the different dv5 models).
However here is the link to the service manual I randomly pulled.

Assume it is safe to say all dv5 models come with SATA notebook drives.
So, if you want to spring for $15, you can get this enclosure which apparently has very good reviews.

From what you are describing (noise and stuff), I would say you don't have much of a chance to recover data but that is up to you if you want to try the enclosure or not.
Here is what I recommend:
Yank the hard drive, and power on the notebook.
If the odd noise you heard is gone, then you can pretty much safely assume the drive was the cause, and that replacing the drive, and reinstalling the operating system will solve the issue.
If the noise is still there, then there could be another issue, and it might be risky throwing good money after bad.

The dreaded 3F0, "hard disk not exist" problem

Okay, I have a degree in EE with a minor in comp sci. I understand how bios' work, etc. This is why the "answers" HP "tech support" gave me make absolutely no sense. Could someone please shed some light on this bizarre problem? I am trying to install a BRAND NEW, WORKING hard drive in a DV7-6163 and the laptop refuses to recognize the existence of the SATA drive. I have tried this drive in another laptop and IT WORKS, I have tried other working hard drives in this machine and they DO NOT work. I have checked to make sure the SATA cable was good....yes! I went as far as to switch the connector from the DVD drive to the SATA port that was meant for the hard drive. Guess what, IT WORKS and the laptop thinks there is a hard drive installed (it even runs the hd diag.. no more "hard disk not exist" error!!) SO I now know that that actual hardware port is able to communicate with a SATA device. HP has been LESS THAN HELPFUL as they insist it must be a bad drive or bad main board (even after I explained my various tests demonstrate that it cannot be (why does the port that refuses to recognize the hard drive talk fine to the DVD drive??). So the only thing left is either a corrupted bios, or a major firmware issue with the code. Could someone please point me in the right direction? This was a very expensive laptop and I am ready to throw it through a window!!

Could you provide a link to the UEFI diagnostics utility? I tried to google it, but there are so many hits, it makes it confusing to know which one! Are you saying that the UEFI diag dos utility can bypass the bios functions? HP blatently LIES about the ability to access the advanced bios settings! How do I know? I have the Insyde H20 EzH20 tool. For some reason i cannot get it to work with my dv7 bios (it is RSA signed), but it works fine on my DV6 bios and allows you to access a plethora of advanced settings! Namely the SATA mode which I sorely need access to. How HP justifies not allowing a customer access to settings on property we own is beyond me. Of course the impetus must be they want to be able to charge us to change a simple setting. I will NEVER buy HP again! Twenty years ago they were a respectable brand. Today, they are all about squeezing every drop of blood from the customer!

Any recent changes - Unknown - children were last using and nobody seems to know anything.

Somebody might have removed the hard drive or dropped the computer and killed it. Can you open the hard drive bay on the bottom of the computer and look inside?

Everytime i turn it on the screen goes black and the words "Boot Drive error" "Hard disk not Exist" pops up, i press F2 For "System Diagnostics" and everythings fine exept on the "hard Disk" test it says "error, hard disk not exist" and when i press F11 at the begging it says System recovery, but nothing happens. My computer was not sent with a recovery disk and i cannot access it, is there any way to fix this problem or create a recovery disk for my computer?

Sounds as if your hard drive has failed,not uncommon.If you are still within warranty HP will send a new hdd, if not It can be replaced with a retail SATA laptop hdd. Just take in in with you to the store and ask for suitable replacement.
If you did not burn your Recovery set you can order from HP for a small fee to reinstall Windows on the new hdd.>>Contact HP
