Hard drive not in disk utility will not boot up
Went to turn on MacBook pro and got file with question mark. Installed boot disk went to disk utility and hard drive not there to repair. Any help would be appreciated.
Try OWC - they specialize in Mac accessories and have some very good internal hard drives. Sounds as if you need a new one.

Hard Drive Reads in Disk Utility but not in Finder
I have a Seagate FreeAgent hard drive that is configured to NTFS. I use software to read and write to this on my macbook pro. I have plugged my hard drive into my macbook this morning and it will only read in Disk Utility, and not show up at all in Finder. I have plugged it into another macbook and have the same thing. Tried to do disk repair and it said it was repaired and operating normally, but still not opening in Finder. I also tried it on a Dell running XP and same thing, doesn't open as a folder but shows as operating normally in the XP's disk utility equivalent. I have tried finding an answer elsewhere but can't come up with anything. Besides taking it for data recovery, is there anything else I can do or try to fix without compromising the data?
Message was edited by: jazmyn96You might get more help were you to post in something like the MacBook or OS X forum. This forum is for OS 9, an archived Apple Macintosh operating system.
That said, it sounds like your drive might be dead. When you say that you can see it in Disk Utility, you mean that it shows up in the column on the left? When you repair it, can you hear the drive spinning up?
Can you try making an image of the drive to see what happens? -
Lacie Hard Drive Appears In Disk Utility But Not Desktop
Hello,
My Lacie hard drive was working fine till yesterday. It will appear in the disk utility but not on the desktop? I'm using a G4 with mac os 10.3.9. I have tried disconnecting the power and rebooting to no avail.
Any help?
Thank you.Welcome to the forum.

External Hard Drive showing in Disk Utility - but not desktop.
A little background:
Yesterday, I moved my shelf where I have my modem, Airport Extreme, Airport Express and an external HD connected to the extreme to be a wireless HD for all users to access. Everything worked great - no problems whatsoever.
Problem: I have reconnected everything exactly as it was and reconfigured it as it was and now the external HD is having issues. When connected to the extreme, I can see it in the airport utility, but cannot gain access to it in that way. When I connect directly to my macbook, it is recognized by the disk utility, but does not appear on the desktop.
I don't know if this may have caused the problem, but I carelessly, unplugged the power bar for which all the above mentioned hardware plugs into when moving the shelf. Now, everything works as it did, except I can't get the express to show up once it is configured (but this isn't surprising as I had to fight with it the first time I configured it - not uncommon I am told), and the HD is no longer accessible via the network, or when directly connected to my macbook.
Help! According to the utilities, the data is still on the disk, I just can't access it in any way. From the Disk Utility, select the drive and click on the Repair Disk(not Repair Permissions) button. If the Disk Utility finds a problem it can't fix, DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro will likely succeed.

Hard drive visible in Disk Utility but not on desktop
I have an external hard drive, one of a RAID 1 mirrored pair which I have been connecting to my computer with FW800. I was having problems as was using one of them for a while, which solved them. When I hooked them both up to my computer, they showed up as two separate drives rather than one drive like before (since they were mirrored). Now the one I have been using does not appear on the desktop but I can see it in Disk Utility, but can't fix permissions with it or even verify it. I've tried connecting with USB instead of FW800 but that has no effect.
already checked, there is a problem with my computer or with the external hard drive. Now a new esata array is giving me problems so I am starting to think there is something wrong with the computer.

Hard drive disappears and Disk Utility is not finding it
I woke my computer up from sleep this morning, launched Final Cut Pro and it threw me an error. It said there was a permissions error for one of the volumes FCP was using, then my hard drive disappeared.
It does not show up in Disk Utility, nor does it appear in System Profiler.
I took the SATA drive out of my Mac Pro and tried to mount it using an external SATA to USB dock. It spins and sounds ok, but still won't mount.
Anything I can do to revive this drive?all of this pretty clearly indicates that the drive is dead. get a new one.

Disk utility will not boot using COMMAND R. It won't give me the 'ERASE' option when I open Disk Utility. How do I wipe my hard drive?
If you're truly running 10.6.8, there is no Recovery partition - that didn't come along until 10.7x.
You'll need to use the set of gray discs that originally shipped with your model. If you don't have them, you can always get your serial number from the bottom of the casing and call Apple to get a set of replacement discs. These will run you about $20 + shipping & taxes. Once you have the discs, boot from Disk One and use Disk Utility to erase your HD and then reinstall whichever version of OS X that shipped with your model. No way around of getting the discs.

Disk utility will not verify disk because, " The underlying task reported failure on exit." The "repair disk" button does not light up. The report says that repairs need to be made to the hard drive. I have already checked permissions. What do I do next to get the repair process started? Also, I cannot find a defragmenting drive option in Disk Utility. Doesn't it exist?
You need to boot from the install DVD (or a clone of your internal) to run Repair Disk. Repair Disk will be grayed out, dimmed, because you can't repair from the same volume you are booted from.
EDIT: No, you do not yet need to use Disk Warrior or Tech Tool or do any reformatting. These steps might become necessary only if Repair Disk fails.
Unless you have very large video files, for example, there is no need to run any defragmenting utility. OS X does it all by itself on the fly.
Try Disk Utility
Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If you don't have the install DVD, try a Safe Boot. Hold the Shift key down at startup and give it much more time to boot than usual. It's trying to repair the drive directory.

Disk Images will not mount and Disk Utility will not runru
I am having some major problems with Disk Utility, Disk Images, and software update. First, Disk utility will not open or run. When I double-click the application icon, nothing happens, no message, nothing. I am running OSX 10.4.11. I have deleted diskutility prefs. I am able to run Disk Utility from the Startup DVD of Tiger. On first run, it verified and repaired permissions. I run verify and repair permissions several more times from Startup DVD and everything is fine. But Disk Utility on my startup HD will not work. Similary, NONE of my disk images will mount. No matter what Disk Image i try to mount, nothing will. And I cannot use Disk utility to mount them! So, no matter what I download, no images will mount. And thirdly, when I try to run software update, it will not work. I do get a message: it says, "Could not load Software Update." Finally, i tried to download Onyx to delete log files, etc.. but again, the disk image will not mount. I was able to install a dashboard widget called "maintidget" and was successful in running the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks. Can anyone help? Everything else works fine!!! All apps! Safari, Mail, iTunes, MS Office, everything works fine. Thanks for ANY help!
Previously, I had run verify permissions, repair permissions multiple times(from startup DVD) - no probems found. Deleted disk utility prefs. Run the maintenance taskes (daily, weekly, monthly). Nothing worked. But, I forget to check the drive for problems. So I ran disk scan. It found "invalid node" and repair disk could not do it. So, do I erase and do a fresh install or get DiskWarrior? I am running Leopard so I do not have Time Machine but I have backed up my documents, iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, etc... Another thing I found out the hardway is to sync all your bookmarks, mail settings and messages, etc... with .mac if you have an account. Any more suggetions?

Drive visible in Disk Utility but not Finder. Why?
I have a PowerMac G4 (mirrored drive doors) with 4 hard drives installed. 3 of the drives are set-up in a striped RAID array and the other one is my boot drive with two partitions. One one partition, I have OS X 10.3 and I can see the RAID drive fine. On the other partition, I fresh installed 10.4 but the drive does not appear on the desktop. Strangly, I can see the drive in Disk Utility and it shows me the mount point. I can even unmount and remount it but it still does not show up in the Finder. I had 10.4 server installed prior to the fresh 10.4 (not server) install and that showed it fine. I tried to see the drive in Terminal but also does not appear. Why does my drive appear in Disk Utility but not the Finder?
BDAqua wrote:
Yes, it needs the path to the drive...
:-/ Yes, I got the command in completely with the path to the drive like it states in the other post. I have no idea why it didn't recognize the command as I'm not as familiar with UNIX/Linux commands as I'd like to be.
Anyways... I found the cause of the problem (incase it happens to anyone else). Here's what happened:
The ownership on the root of my RAID volume was set to be read/write for me (under my proper username) and no access for anyone else including Admin. When I installed a fresh OS, the default user was Admin (who had no access under the previous OS). If I would've taken the time to set-up my proper account (with the same owner name as my previous OS) then it would've been visible again but since I didn't see it under the default Admin account, I stopped there to troubleshoot. Another way to make it visible was just to change the access privileges from my previous OS to be read/write for other users (or at least Admin). I would think that checking the box for "Ignore ownership on this volume" would've remedied that but for whatever reason, it didn't.
Thank you for all your help. I did learn a little even if it wasn't the direct solution. Now if only I could get Disk Utility to restore my old image without giving me crazy errors... But that's another issue altogether. ;-D -
My disk utility will not let me highlight journaled in the drop down menu. I need to erase the entire mac for re sell purposes.
You need to be booted from another source as you cannot delete or reformat the drive you are booted from. See if you can either use the original install disks (Snow Leopard or earlier) or internet recovery (Lion or later) to boot from and then be able to use the Partition tab to partition and format it correctly.

IPhoto 06 and Disk Utility will not launch
I have a friend who has upgraded to iLife 06 on her G4 Mirrored Doors and when she tries to launch iPhoto 06 it bounces in the dock and then stops. iWeb will launch, as well as iDVD and iMovieHD, but Disk Utility will not. I have used the Tiger Install DVD to repair permissions as well as run FSCK -fy in single user mode. Nothing seems to fix these problems. Any advice will be appreciated.
TIA.
Lance
PowerBook G4 15 Al Mac OS X (10.4.8)Since Disk Utility won't run I'd reinstall the 10.4.8 COMBO updater. Then see if DU will launch. If so repair disk permissions with it. Then see if iPhoto will launch. If not then reinstall iPhoto from the iLife disks, update to 6.0.4 with System update, and then download and run the 6.0.5 updater (it will only run on 6.0.4). Then run Disk Utility again and repair disk permissions.
Before reinstalling however, all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder must be deleted along with the current application. -
Disk Utility will not open. It will start but closes immediately. Removed com.apple.Diskutility.plist from user preference folder. Still will not open. Selected try again when that dialog box showed up. Rebooted. Same results.
Rebooted from external source and ran Disk Utility.
Apparently, something is missing in one of the libraries.
Need help.
BudHey Doc, here's what I did to work your sugesstion: clean all three logs, attempted opening Disk Utility, and viewed all three logs. cdonsole.log and system.log were the same stating Disk Utility Crash.log was written to.

Disk Utility will not burn DVDs
Disk Utility will no longer burn DVDs. I have tried both Memorex and Verbatim DVD+R DL -- Disk Utility tells me the disks are locked, not writable, capacity 0. These are fresh DVDs right off the spindle. I am, however able to write to these same DVDs using Burn, so it's not a media problem. Tried deleting preferences for Disk Utility, tried using Drive Genius 2 to repair the HD, but it didn't show any problems. Any solution short of doing a clean install of the system?
Hi-
Will the drive read any discs?
Have you tried burning a disc at slower speed?
Have you tried a different, quality brand of disc? -
Disk Utility will not secure erase after 2015-002 security update
HI
I have a Mac Book Pro, May 2010, 2.4 ghz; 8gb ram; 500 gig hd (which I installed in Sept 2013), running Mac OS 10.9.5. I am running Disk Utility Version 13.
I run secure erase, single, three and seven passes, several times a week, and regularly clean out cache files. I have used about 228 gb; 271 gb are free.
After installing Security Update 2015-002, I ran secure erase, single pass. I got a failure message stating disk utility could not erase temporary file. I ran secure ease, single pass, on the admin, everyday use and guest portions of my hard drive, Same error message.
Is a solution beyond doing a Time Machine backup, wipe the hard drive clean on a single pass, and reinstall? Buy a new hard drive? ThanksDo a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.
