Hard drive not showing up on desktop

My hard drive is not showing up on desktop. Hardisc repair says drive is not formatted yet would not format drive or failed after initial attempt. I did put the same drive into USB external case and then it showed up on desktop. I then was able to format disc and install OS 9.2 onto disc but when I reinserted disc into Lombard (Powerbook G3 M5343) it was back to not appearing and identifying disc as not formatted.
When I turn on -getting a prompt that says built in memory test says there is something wrong with memory cashe could this have something to do with problem?
I don't think there is a problem with Motherboard as I just replaced it. I also don't think it is the drive cable as it identifies drive and also I have a "spare-parts" Lombard with a defective motherboard and I tried attaching drive with that drive cable and still had the same problem. Unless both drive ribbons are defective -I assume not...but maybe that could be the problem?
Any ideas?

Richard,
You do have a failure of the backside L2 cache, a common problem on the Lombard. This memory is soldered to the microprocessor card and the only fix is a replacement card.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=51159
I don't know if the failed L2 cache memory would cause a problem with the HD on the internal IDE bus controller; it apparently does not via the USB bus.
Generally, users who have the failed L2 cache do not have a successful startup unless they reset the power manager. Try this: With the Lombard turned off, reset the power manager and see if it will start up to the internal HD. If no success, shut down, insert your OS 9.2 CD, reset the power manager, and see if the HD appears on the desktop after booting to the CD.

  • External Hard Drive/Not Showing Up on Desktop

I have a G4, running OS X 10.2.8 and recently my kids deleted some important data. So--we bought an external hard drive (WD MyBook 160 GB Essential Edition, which says on the box that it runs 10.2.8 and higher).
We took the external hard drive and the computer to a reputable repair place, the guy there took the hard drive out and using a G6 system, restored what he could to the external hard drive.
We bring it home, plug it in, and the computer is not reading the new external hard drive. I did check in disk utility, and it shows up as a greyed out item on the disk utility.
The external hard drive does show up when hooked up to my husband's office PC.
Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to correct it?
    Thanks, Ruth

OK, I figured it out (in case anyone else needs to know) with this information from the Western Digital site:
Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier will only recognize FAT32 partitions that are smaller than 128-gigabytes. Multiple FAT32 partitions smaller than 128-gigabytes will need to be created in order for Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier to recognize the partitions. You will need to use a Windows based computer to create FAT32 partitions, as Macintosh does not have the ability to create them.
Macintosh Operating System 10.4.x or later can recognize FAT32 partitions over 128-gigabytes.

  • External Hard Drive NOT Showing Up on Desktop or in Finder Window

I have a PowerBook G4 and am connecting a Western Digital portable hard drive via USB (high-speed). It worked it the past, but it is no longer showing up in finder windows or on the desktop, and as such, I cannot access the files stored on it. When I open up the system profiler, it shows up as being connected in the USB Device Tree, but I don't know how to proceed... PLEASE help, I am a photographer and I have tons of images stored here, not to mention my iTunes library!!!

Have you tried 'mounting' the drive from within Disk Utility (found in 'Utilities' within the Applications folder)?
Do you have any other USB devices connected when you connect the drive? If so try ejecting all other USB devices before connecting the drive. Have you also tried using a different USB cable?
Does the drive require an external power supply? If so, have you checked the power supply?
Have you noticed if there were any unusual noises or activity from the drive in recent days? If so try 'Repair Disk' from Disk Utility. I don't want to scare you but there is always a possibility that the drive is either failing or has failed - hopefully that will not be the case.
Do you have DiskWarrior? If so try checking the drive with DW.

  • G4 Main Hard Drive not showing up on desktop or in folder side list

I am able to access my hard drive, it boots up in to OSX from it just fine. However I am unable to see its icon on my desktop and can see no icon in the folder views. I have run disk utility numerous times and there is no problem ever detected. It is not causing any problems with my computer, it is just a hassle to get access to files on it. An external 500GB drive mounts and shows up on my desktop. Any help?

If you don't like Applescript or Terminal there is an application called [JuhOS X|http://www.saunalahti.fi/~juhruo/juhosx> that lets you toggle visibility on individual items. It does not have the most intuitive interface but your drive should appear on the first page. Check it really is invisible, then click on the drive and toggle visibility. Effects will not take place until you restart your finder, so the easiest thing to do then will be to restart your computer.

  • One of My Hard Drives not showing up ion desktop

    Hi
I've got one internal hard drive that will just not show up on the desktop or finder windows I can see it in disk utilities and everything is ok it was working no problems yesterday but since I have had to do a reformatting of my system disk and reinstall leopard and then snow leopard as my system hard had been case sensitive formatted which was causing some trouble with some software not being able to be installed, so after a complete fresh install I now cannot see one of the 3 hard drive that is in my Mac, any ideasTTFN
    Subcoustic

if you can see it in spotlight then you should be able to use the go menu. I suspect you are entering the path incorrectly. the drive might have a hidden flag. run the following terminal command
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. see if the drive shows up after that.

  • External hard drive not showing up on desktop or in finder

I just upgraded to 10.5 and then to 10.5.2 and now I'm not able to use my new Maxtor external HD. I don't see the icon on the desktop, it doesn't show up in the in the sidebar of the finder window, and sometime it does/doesn't show up in disk utilities. The HD was formatted in disk utility and worked originally (last week) but then the next day it wouldn't show up. Since then nothing...
    Any suggestions??

    I have similar problem...
Maxtor One Touch External HD 300GB
HD first mounted and showed 276GB in finder... restarted for the latest security update and when HD mounted after restart, HD showed 276GB...
when I went to access HD an error popped up, telling me to backup my data and reformat drive as soon as possible...? weird yes!
In turn I did reformat it seeing as I didn't have anything on it. When HD mounted after that it showed 128GB!!!!?? Where the **** did my space go ? The HD seemed to work fine before, but I get this error and now I have lost space...
I'm not 100% sure that the security update was the culprit or just bad timing.?.?
Anyways to get my space back?

  • My external hard drive not showing up

    Hello,
My external hard drive is not showing up on my desktop. I went to finder & preferences>general and made sure I checked "show these items" and checked hard drives. I even unchecked it because I have 2 other external hard drives. When I checked the hard drive box the other 2 hard drives appeared but the third hard drive did not. The hard drive not showing up on my desk top does show up when I double click my system hard drive & can be opened from there, but I want to see it on my desk top. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I had the same problem. On the folders on the drive with the Aperture library did show in the Import panel. After I clicked the computer icon in the upper left corner of the Import panel, suddenly all drives appeared.
You can also try to drag the folder you want to import into the Import panel, to point the file chooser to the drive.

  • External drive not showing up on desktop

I have an external hard drive (2T Newertech ministack). We had a power outage the other day. Even though the drive is on it no longer appears on the desktop. I went to Disk Utility and see if it could be repaired but the drive is not even showing up there. Does this mean the ministack was fried by the outage or is there another way I can save it? And yes, the finder preferences are on for external drives to show up on desktop.

It's not likely it would be fried if it's connected to a UPS because then it would not lose power and crash. Have you tried disconnecting the device from the computer, rebooting the computer, then reconnecting the device?
Since you have another Mac try directly connecting the device to it and using Disk Utility to repair the drive. Then give it a try on the other computer.

  • USB Hard Drive not showing up in AirPort Utility

I have been using this AirPort Extreme for over two years now and it's been working fine. I finally decided to buy a self-powered USB hard drive so I can share it over the network. However, after I unpacked the hard drive, connected it to my Mac and reformatted it to HFS+ Journaled and GUID. I plugged the hard drive into my AirPort Extreme's USB port and waited. I looked in my AirPort Utility and saw nothing in the disk list.
I spent hours searching online and discovered that I am not alone in this problem, although solutions are rare. I did try one solution where I hooked up the USB hard drive to a powered USB hub and the hub into AirPort Extreme. It actually worked once and after I rebooted everything, even though the hard drive still showed up in the disk list, no computers can connect to it. Although if I connect the hard drive directly to a Mac, it would still work perfectly.
Having a USB hub is not a long term solution not that it's working anymore anyway. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have, thanks!

  • Windows Server 2012r2 Essentials - Dashboard - Server Folder and Hard Drives Not Showing..

    Hi,
Following the last series of Windows updates, I'm experiencing problems with our WS2012R2 Essentials server. When opening the Dashboard, the 'home:getting started' tab shows all correct except 'server folders n/a'. On checking the Storage tab, the normal
display for 'server folders' and 'hard drives' just shows 'refreshing list of items'.
Despite symptoms above, Storage Space and Server Folders show correctly in server Windows Explorer and are available to client computers across the LAN. It just appears that for some reason the Dashboard cannot see them.
One other related symptom I've noted is that for some reason the 'wsestoragesvc' Windows Server Essentials Storage Service no longer starts automatically. Even when started manually Dashboard symptoms remain - server folders and hard drives aren't visible
    on dashboard.
I've run sfc /scannow to check for problems - all clear and run chkdsk on the system volume.
Would welcome ideas on what steps to be taken to fix problem. Many thanks..

    Hi,
The issue could be due to a custom service knocks on effect on the Windows Server Essentials Storage Service and causes the service no longer starts automatically.
You could refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

If the issue still exists, try to reinstall the Windows Server Essentials.

  • External Hard Drives not showing

I have 2 external hard drives connected using FW 800, a Western Digital 500TB & a Seagate 500TB. The Western Digital has a habit of freezing and the last time this happened I powered down the iMac. When I re started the iMac neither external hard drive is showing on the desk top what's happening and how do I cure this?

    HI MIke,
To start with if your forum profile is correct you need to update your system softare to 10.5.8. Go here and install the v10.5.8 Combo Update
Also, in the Finder from the Menu Bar click Finder/Preferences and select the General tab.
Select the 2nd button and relaunch the Finder.

  • Hard drive not showing on desktop in 10.10.3

Well this is an interesting one!  After upgrading to 10.10.3 I no longer see my MAIN Hard Drive (SSD) on the Desktop.  I've checked show HD's in the Finder Preferences; but it's not visibly on the Desktop nor in the Desktop folder when I open that.  It shows in the sidebar and I can make an alias (it shows in the volumes "folder") but where is the actual hard drive itself?  A restart did NOT help--
My 2 other internal HD's (removed the DVD Player 2 years ago and put in my old HD and partitioned it) - they show!
    What is going on?
    Thanks for any ideas…

GENIUS!!  Super!!  Wow this really worked:  I found the com.app.finder.plist right where you indicated, dragged it to the desktop, (closed all other apps first) then did a restart.  It was not there at first, but I went to FINDER/Preferences and checked Show HD's (which had been checked before but was NOT checked this time) and as soon as checking all my HD's showed INCLUDING THE MAIN SSD with my startup disk.
    REALLY GREAT!!!!!
I did have to reset a few finder preferences -- but I learned something:  I can now use TotalFinder with Tabs (just super - can connect 2 windows and more - much better than the Yosemite tabs) -- BUT NOW IT SEEMS I can have subtabs using the Yosemite tabs.  Really neat - I have, for example, 4 Main TotalFinder tabs set and put about 5 subtabs under each.  Those are my 20 MAIN folders that I use all the time.  Now I have 2-3 other TotalFinder Tabs that I'll use for other things (so as not to mess-up my 4 MAIN tabs).
This is just a great example of my new philosophy (since 2001 when I lost a job and did this):  TAKE A NEGATIVE AND TURN IT INTO A POSITIVE.
Well I could not have discovered all this, WOULD not have discovered this without this issue today and especially not without your help, keg55 and of course the assistance of everyone here today!!  REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!
    Best regards,

  • External Hard Drive not showing on desktop

    Hi,
I'm using a macbook pro, 15", and have been using it with my external hard drive for the past 2 months.
This afternoon, I was using the external, where i have all my music and photos stored, and it was working fine. I left the computer on sleep for about 2 hours (all programs that have stuff on the external I made sure to quit before), and when I got back the "icon" for the back up disk was slightly more "invisible" on my desktop and time machine informed me that the latest back up failed. When I tried to eject it (nothing on the disk was being used) it said it couldnt be ejected because the disk was in use.
I tried to eject again, same thing, so I restarted the computer. When I restarted the computer the external harddrive icon did not show up on my desk top. I tried pulling it out and plugging it in a few times, the disk will start up, but not load onto my desk top.
    HELP!!!
the external hard drive is a Western Digital "my Passport"
    Thank you!

if I repair the disk, will i lose everything on it?
Running Disk Repair will not harm your data,  the idea is to repair  and make it functional again.
If successful I would make a back up of that data because you may be skating on thin ice.

  • External Hard drive not showing on finder or desktop

My hard drive is only a week old and was working fine until i plugged it in today. The hard drive light still lights up when plugged in and it works when i plug it into a tv and my roommates pc.
However on my macbook the hard drive won't show up in finder or the desktop... it shows in disk utility but options to verify disk etc are 'greyed out' so i can't click on them. THere isn't anything wrong with the hard drive because as stated above it worked on other devices.
Other usb and external hard drives are being recognosed fine and show up in finder.
    Can anyone please help?

Same problem here.  Sometimes drives disappear completely from the Finder sidebar.  Sometimes they just gray out.  Quick 'n' easy fix:  In Terminal, type:
    chflags nohidden /Volumes/MY_PARTITION
(where MY_PARTITION is the name of the drive you can't find).
For the UNIX impaired, if there's a space in your drive name, you can use "\ " to represent the space (no quotes, just the backslash and the space).  So for example, Macintosh HD would be typed:
    Macintosh\ HD
