Hard Drive not visible during install.

I recently tried to turn on my G4 and got just a white screen. So I assumed it was the hard drive. I installed a new Hard drive. Put in my Leopard disk and the drive is not visible. I went into Disk Utility to format it, if needed. It was not visible there either.
Out of suspicion, I plugged in the old HD into a different mac via USB and my data is there and visible.
What could the problem be? I went back and double checked all of the cables.

I know it's a pain to take out just to test, however, did you plug the new drive into the other system via USB to see if it's recognized also?
Usually in this situation, it's a cable problem. Either a cable is not seated completely, or in rarer cases, there's a problem with a cable itself. Since the old drive is visible to the other system, you may have another issue going on, like a logic board problem. I'd want to run the Apple hardware test. On the gray OS X system CDs that came with your system, find the one that says 'AHT Version x.x', insert it, reboot, and choose the extended test when prompted. Either of the TechTool programs can do similar testing.
By the way, your sig says you have Snow Leopard 10.6.3 installed, which is impossible on a Powerbook. Leopard 10.5.8 is the last operating system release available today for Powerbooks.

hard drive not recognized during windows server 2008 setup

    Hi,
Whether the hard disk is recognized in BIOS?
Connect it to another computer to see if it could be recognzied incase the cause is the disk itself. Also please check if it is really a RAID instead of a single hard disk - a single disk should be recognized directly while RAID cannot be recognized until
    a suitable driver is installed.

  • External hard drive not visible on Mac Mini

I just purchased a Mini with Lion.  The Seagate Freeagent external hard drive is visible from finder on the Mini but it is "read only" and it is not visible on the wireless network to my macbook.  How can I make the external hard drive read write and make it visible on the network?

OS X can read an NTFS formatted drive, but not write to it.

  • Hard Drive not detected during installation

    Hello everyone,
I am brand new to this Mac Forum, and I am hoping you can assist a colleague of mine who has a Hardware issue with his Mac.
It is a Power Mac G4 and one day he started having issues booting into the MacOS, but after several re-boots it would be okay, and then it didn't want to know at all, so he asked me to take a look at it.
My knowledge of Mac's is fairly basic, but I am familiarish with the Hardware, so I tried installing the Drive on another I.D.E. Cable and channel, re-seated the Memory, but it made no difference. So I assumed it was a dead Hard Drive?
However, he purchased a 120Gb WD (previous one being an 80Gb I.B.M.Deskstar), and I went around to his office to install it - same problem?!
Basically the installation gets as far as agreeing to the Licence Agreement, then we get the dialogue box where you select the destination for the Hard Drive, but there's nothing in there.
My guess is a faulty Motherboard, yet the CD Drive is still detected, obviously, for the boot to take place from the installation disk!?
Is there any BIOS I can access to make sure the Mac is detecting the Hard Drive properly?
Please help if you can, it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Nathan.

    Hello again,
Thanks very much for your replies.
My colleague would be very reluctant to purchase a Controller Card for his Mac, particularly whilst I still have strong suspicious about the Motherboard.
I did follow the link in Rodney Cullings reply, but that isn't quite the issue.
It is a brand new Hard Drive, purchased from Jigsaw, and therefore I would assume unformattted; however we cannot use the Disk Utility to format it because there is no Hard Drive detected in the "Select a destination drive" in the first place!
Hence my question about the B.I.O.S., because in a situation like this on a P.C., the first thing I'd do (if Windows hadn't detected the Hard Drive) is check the B.I.O.S., because if it isn't in there, it's either Jumpers - which I've already tried - or a dead Hard Drive.
I have installed the newer drive in a P.C., and the B.I.O.S. did actually detect it.
So, any other ideas please people?
Many thanks for those supplied so far.
    Nathan.
P.S. Am I posting this to the correct Forum?

  • Help unable to install OS X as hard drive not visible in internet recovery mode

    Hi
    I have a MacBook Pro
During use my screen froze and I had to force quit. Since then I have tried the following:
    Turning on in safe mode
Internet recovery - no mac hd or partition recovery drive are visible in disk utility only OS X base system
Unable to install maverick as there's no disc visible to select
If I try to verify the start up disc is greyed out
    Starting up with cmd r
    Tried to reset PRAM
Start up disc does not display anything
ALL TO NO AVAIL, is the hard drive defunct or is there anything else I can try ?
    Many thanks for your help
    Elie

See this thread, this is 3rd regarding recovery/restore - as a starting point.
Obviously it is easier if you have a couple backups, a drive you can use, and don't mind erasing the internal drive.
It is a lot easier then. And it would be easier if you didn't have a notebook. This forum is not MacBook Pro but the tower or workstation.

  • External hard drive not visible, following Mavericks install

I mac user for 2 years, have a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt external hard drive for my photo catalogue.
Always connected but with the old operating system had to manually switch on and off with blue light button. fine.
Upgraded to Maverick over the weekend, not the lacie drive switches on as soon as the mac powers up, blue light and noise from the drive.
If I have shutdown the mac then when the start up occurs the lacie drive is seen and present in finder, fully functional.
If the mac is switched on from sleep mode the lacie starts up noise and blue light showing, but it is not seen in finder or the disc utility programme.
I then have to switch the drive off, (which it does not like, forced shutdown) and restart manually, then it is seen and works fully,
Have switched off, unplugged, switched thunderbolt ports but no success.
Is there a simple cure for this, setting in sleep mode etc...
    Regards Neil

I would start by doing a SMC reset, could take 2-3 attempts. If those do not work then restart in Safe Mode and check and if that does not work try different cables.
SMC reset: Shut down computer remove power cord from computer and wall for 15-20 seconds and restart normally.
Safe Mode: Shut down computer and restart, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Shift key until a progress bar appears. Then restart normally

  • Hard drive not visible

    Hello,
My Hard Drive I use for Time Machine does not show up anymore on my Desktop suddenly.
It is visible under disk utility but does not show up in finder , nor in /Volumes.
In disk utility it stays greyed out as being not activated
When tryin to activate it, it indicates I should repair the harddrive.
Checking and repairing the hard drive indicates the drive is ok.
I am somehwat stuck now. Anybody can help?

I had recently "lost" my drive owing to a corrupted catalogue tree caused by a failing RAM chip. Had to boot up from an external drive, run diskwarrior to see the hd again, back up everything, then re-install the operating system.
Since you do not have backups, it is time for you to purchase an external firewire hard drive, install the operating system and boot from there. I purchased enclosure and drive separately...was cheaper.
I recommend to test your RAM...purchase the software memtest...for $1.39 US. Keneral panics frequently indicate failing RAM.

  • External hard drive not visible in disk utility or finder

    Hi all,
I have had a good look through previous discussions and I can't seem to find an issue relevant to mine.
My external hard drive has 2 partitions (1 time machine back up, 1 general hard drive). The issue is that the HD is running when it is plugged in however it is not visible in either disk utility or finder.
I am running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) on a 2010 MacBook Pro. I also have parallels desktop running windows 7. When I boot windows and plug in the HD I usually get the option to mount the HD to either OS X or Windows. With this issue the option window appears for a split second (not enough time to select either) and then disappears. It seems that the HD may be ejecting itself as soon as it is registered by the computer. I have tried using a different power cable for the HD and also a different usb cable, this doesn't help.
The external HD is a Samsung D3 Station, which i have had for 6 months now and never had an issue with.
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks,
    Bruce

An update for anyone who can help me:
I have tried the external hard drive in other computers (mac and windows), each time I get the same problem above.
I have removed the HD from the enclosure and purchased a docking station for it (3.5" SATA). When I plug it in to the laptop it disconnects itself straight away before it is visible. With the windows computers it installs the drivers and says that the device is ready to use, then disconnects before it shows up.
As the HD is not visible there is no option to re-format or anything.
This is very frustrating as I was using the HD with no issues and it randomly disconnected and I have not been able to access since.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Hard drive not recognized AFTER installing leopard

So I installed Leopard on my 12in Powerbook G4, having the usual problem of non-recognition of my hard drive (from a third party) but was able to install Leopard after fiddling with disk utility.
Now the computer will not recognize the hard drive after I restarted it. I've tried rebooting holding down the option key and selecting the hard drive and it still didn't recognize after restarting (it shows a prohibit sign). Also tried booting in single-user mode but it keeps waiting for the root device forever.
Has anybody had a similar problem?

    Unplugging worked!!!
I have no idea what PRAM is but someone said that unplugging your computer resets it so, I thought I'd give unplugging a shot. So, I shut down my computer and unplugged it. I also unplugged the power on the HD. (because I wasn't sure which one they were talking about.)
Anyway, I went away for about five minutes.
I came back plugged in the HD power first. Then, I plugged in the power cord for the computer and turned it on.
As soon as I logged in I was asked if I wanted to use my external HD for Time Machine backups.
I saw the icon for the HD on the Desktop where is belongs. I can open the drive and access the files with no problem.
Try this if you haven't yet.

  • External hard drive not recognized to install

I have a MacBook from Dec 2008 that I've upgraded to OS X 10.8.4. I just purchased a WD My Passport external hard drive for Mac. It should just open the installation guide when plugged in but nothing happens. I turned off/on the computer, checked for missing updates, tried to manually install the hard drive utilities to no avail. The external hard drive makes a noise and the indicator light blinks when I plug it in the the USB cord (it's configured for 2.0 & 3.0) but nothing shows up on the computer. Does it have somthing to do with upgrading to Snow Leopard/Mountain Lion? Did some driver get lost along the way? The only solution I can think of is that the WD drive is defective, but I hope not. Help is much appreciated.

    Hey, I'm trying.
    WD website says:
Does my Western Digital Hard Drive require a driver? Where do I get one?
Most current WD drives do not require additional drivers on the Windows or Mac OSX Operating System (OS) beyond the ones that are included with the OS.
In order to simplify the installation process WD elected to use the standard drivers that are built into common operating systems. While there are a few exceptions to this, in general, there are no drivers provided by WD for our drives. That's because the drivers a WD hard drive or SSD uses are part of the Operating System being used. As such, any trouble with these drivers should be handled by the regular line of support for the Operating System in question - in most cases by contacting the system's manufacturer, IT department, or the publisher of the OS.

  • External hard drive not visible in Finder or Disk Utility

    Hi everyone,
My Wester Digital 2TB external hard drive has disappeared, so to speak, with all my photos. I work as a freelance photographer. Mostly on Lightroom 5.6
When I plug it in, with firewire, I can feel the disk rotating normally however it does not appear in finder or disk utility.
I've tried using a USB cable, restarting my mac, forced restart, changing firewire ports (HD has 2 ports), plugging the HD into a different laptop and nothing.
Ive also searched Finder prefrences and visibility is enabled.
I have no idea what could have caused this as I was using the HD the night before. I didnt pullout without properly ejecting. Maybe the HD is full or almost, but I dont think that would the cause of these troubles.
    I'm using a late 2011 Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.4
    Any suggestions??
    Thanx

  • External hard drive not visible in Finder, but is operating

iMac, 2 Gb RAM, Snow Leopard 10.6.4.
It has 4 external USB drives attached through a powered hub. All of a sudden, after about a year, one of them no longer shows up in ‘Finder’. However, all four drives have an icon on the desktop. The drive is visible and verifiable in ‘Disk Utility’. Double clicking the desktop icon opens the drive and I can copy a file from it. iTunes can see it. From a Macbook’s ‘Finder’, over WiFi, I can see and copy files to and from the drive. Finder Preferences shows nothing amiss. I’ve shut down and restarted the iMac several times with no change. The drive just does not show up in Finder on the host iMac.
Searching this forum has not helped. Any suggestions?

Well, this is embarrassing. A suggestion from an older thread on Macrumors.com called "Hard Drive does not appear in Finder / Desktop", solved this problem. Simply drag the missing drive icon from the desktop to Finder! Perseverance and different search wording AND reading a lot of stuff pays off.
If other's problem is not solved with this fix, you might benefit from this 10.5-based thread. They also mention an Apple 10.5 fix. Both URL's below.
The op's problem was that the drive did not appear in Finder OR the desktop but was operational. There was a lot of in-depth information with this fix embedded.
Thanks for the interest and suggestions.

  • Time Capsule internal hard drive not visible

I have one of the older 500GB TC. It worked fine for a year then I decided to wipe the hard drive to erase the contents. I stopped the process in the middle of clearing the hard drive because it was going on about 8 hours. Every since then the TC works fine as a wireless router, but the internal hard drive is not visible. It won't do any back ups and it's not visible in the Airport program.
    Any suggestions?

  • Hard drives not visible in Disk Utility

I decided to add two additional 1.5 TB drives to my (early 2008) Mac Pro, in addition to the two 1.0 TB drives already there. I have a Mac RAID card, but the drives were not configured into an array because I was having battery and setting problems with the RAID card as described in previous posts.
I perhaps got the the not so bright idea to reconfigure my system from scratch, so I put the two 1.5 TB drives in, created partitions via Disk Utility, and then took all the drives out. I then put one of the new 1.5 TB drives in only, and re-installed OS X. So far, so good. Then, I put all 4 drives in, including the previous 1.0 TB drive with OS X on it.
Interestingly, the system then booted to the old 1.0 TB drive with OS X, and then it 'hung' on something with the spinning icon. I shut it down, and then put the new 1.5 TB with OS X, but it would not start. I yanked out the RAID card, figuring it was not helping. I managed to put the Boot DVD in, and the system does boot to DVD. However, it cannot visualize any drive at all, only the two DVDs in Disk Utility.
I tried several things. One is hardware scan by holding the 'D' key on startup -> no errors.
I then tried resetting the PRAM holding the command-option-P-R keys, same issue - boots to DVD, but no drives.
I then tried resetting what I think is the SMC, which is a button on the motherboard down near where the memory slots, and there a green light comes on next to the STBY area.
I'm out of the Apple care warranty, and I guess I'll have to pay for support going into the Mac Store, but I am hopeful someone has an idea.
I wondered if the cable from the SATA connector to the motherboard was loose, but it appears intact. However, I'm not sure how to get the plastic cage off.

Good idea, but the RAID card is out, and even the original drives are not visible. There is some type of BIOS or some related error.
