Hard Drive Optimization - app HD

Due to some wierd things going on with pro apps after installing SL - I am doing a fresh Install of SL and reinstalling all the apps. I am also taking this time to add a couple new HD's to the system.
Has anyone here installed their apps (pro apps) on a different drive than the startup disc and noticed any performance gain? Or waste of time?

Hi Japamac,
The most accepted use of hard drives for performance is to have the OS and all applications on one drive.
Some apps do not behave well when on a drive separate from the OS.
On another drive, keep all user files (the entire Home directory).
A third drive is then dedicated to be used as scratch for the temporary files of the pro apps.
I have just connected a Vertex EX 60GB SSD in the lower optical bay of my 2009 Mac Pro, and I have done a clean install of the Mac OS and all my applications. This has taken up less than 25GB of space, and so there is ample left for me to add other applications such as Photoshop CS5 when it is eventually released. At the moment I have installed Photoshop Elements 8.
The VelociRaptor 300GB HDD, which I was using before, has been erased, and I have used it with 3 other VR300s to set up a 4 drive striped RAID 0. I used Disk Utility for this purpose. So I now have a 128GB volume (Speedy) for use as a scratch drive, and a 1.07TB volume (Data).
Before I erased the first VR300 I cloned a copy of it to my original Mac (WD) 640GB HDD in an ONNTO external enclosure, and I will keep this as a back up boot drive. Also I have everything backed up via Time Machine on a My Book Studio Edition II 2TB external drive.
So, excluding the external drives, I now have 3 volumes - the Vertex EX boot, the Speedy scratch, and the Data.
The Vertex EX is in a "virgin" state at the moment, with the clean install of the OS and applications, and is running like a dream - very, very fast!
As you recommend, I want to leave just the OS and applications on the Vertex EX.
(1) Can I use Migration Assistant to transfer everything else (the user files etc) from the Vertex EX to the 4 drive RAID 0, using the "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" method?
(2) Am I correct in assuming that these should be transferred to the "Data" volume?
(3) Is the "Speedy" scratch volume left blank, and is the OS clever enough to use it for temporary files of the "pro apps", as and when beneficial?
(4) Or do I need to do anything else to "dedicate" it for that purpose?
These might seem silly questions to an experienced user, but this is a completely new set up for me.
Now for a very daft question:
When I erased the Vertex EX, I named it Vertex EX.
However, when I partitioned it (1 partition), I omitted to name the volume. So I now have a volume named "Untitled 1" which I want to re-name "Vertex EX Boot".
I thought it would be simple to do this, but I can't find a way to achieve this in Disk Utility, because, when I select "Untitled 1", none of the 4 options (First Aid, Erase, RAID, Restore) have the facility to do this. I don't want to use any of those options anyway, but I had hoped that I could have changed the name without actually progressing any further.
(5) Is there a simple way for me to rename that volume? I expect there is a way using Terminal, but that is a total unknown to me!

Biltan

  • When I download an app while running iTunes from an external hard drive, the app is automatically saved to the my music folder on my desktop.

Also, when I move an updated app from the my music folder to the external hard drive, it no longer automatically deletes the old version of the app in the folder.

Hi, I was waiting for somebody with experience to pipe in, but as I understand it it'll be that way for upto 5 users if your Sharing iTunes.

  • Installing RAM/hard drive = goodbye APP?

I've heard so many different things about whether or not installing new ram or a new hard drive voids warrenties/AppleCare Protection Plans.
Is there a consensus on this issue?
I'd rather buy a MacBook with a 60gb hard drive and upgrade it myself, but if that won't allow me to have the protection plan, I think I'd just go with the overpriced apple hard drive.
    Thanks in advance.

Installing new RAM and hard drives will not void your warranty. It is a user-serviceable part that is completely allowable. Although if you encounter a problem, the first thing AppleCare will have you do as a trouble-shooting step is to re-install your Apple RAM, so hold on to your old RAM and hard drive. But go ahead, upgrade your HD and RAM, it's perfectly fine.
    Jason.

  • Hard drive analyzer app?

My macbook pro is telling me that i am using 45 gigs of hard drive space and I don't think I have used that much considering I don't have any music or movie/ video clips stored on my computer only 8gigs worth of pictures. Is there a program that will graphically display what is consumming all my hard drive space?

thanks for the recommendation it looks a lot like OmniDiskSweeper

  • Don't store email on hard drive (mail.app)

    Hi,
Look like the option to don't store mail on the computer is not available anymore on mail.
    I having 2 IMAP account (@gmail.com and @apple.com)
I would like to remove the message from the computer and keep on the server
Both account represent around 5.5Go of storage on the hard drive.
    Kind regads.

This is not a good idea, if you iPod is damaged or stolen you will have lost all you music.
You need a second copy. If you don't have room on your local drive, external drives are not that expensive these days. You can keep you iTunes library there.
However if you must, you manage your iPod manually. Then you can delete tracks from the PC. You must never allow the iPod to autosync with the empty library otherwise everything will be deleted.

  • 24" iMac 2008 3.06ghz - Freezes/Beach balls/Sometimes can't find hard drive

    Hi All,
Recently i've been having alot of issues with my 24" iMac. After reading countless discussions, none seem to have had the same answer as everything i have tried just doesn't seem to have worked?! Hoping you can give me a few more ideas and help narrow it down a little. (Fingers crossed solve it!)
    General Issue:
The computer has mood swings - good days and bad days. On a good day it boots in a couple of minutes and on a bad day. I get the flashing folder unable to find a hard drive. Since my last clean install ... i haven't had that folder touch wood! But i do still however get the big bug.
After 10-15 minutes of using the iMac at normal speed whizzing around just doing general things on safari...thats it! its had enough.
Out comes the beach ball and the whole thing freezes apart from the cursor.
Launching a program will make it freeze, currently i launched the app store and its been frozen for a good 20 minutes with nothing.
Cant bring up force quit, either i wait sometimes 10 minutes sometimes an hour...or it has to be powered down by force.
    Current state:
Clean install, no additional software, 500gb harddrive, clean as a whistle!
    Things i've tried:
Smart status, verify disk, repair disk, check disk etc..all the usual disk utility bits.
    fsck check.
    memtest.
    clean install of mountain lion.
-probably a few other bits i cannot think of.
    System specification:
-I cannot paste the actual details from about this mac as its..you guessed it! FROZEN!
From the serial number this is its spec: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP485?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    10.8.3 OS
    500gb HDD
    3.06ghz Processor
    4gb RAM
Let me know any other details you might need. Hope i've posted correctly as this is my first time on the forum. Fingers crossed someone has an answer or had a similar issue and resolution. Thanks, have a great day!
    Jack

does the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive return an OK verification?
Does anything show up during hard drive tests that indicate that your iMac's hard drive maybe failing?.
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?
Also, have you considered installing more RAM?
Your iMac model can take a max. RAM amount of 6 GBs
OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 use more and more CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.
OS X 10.8, alone (no other third party applications running) can use between 2-4 GBs of RAM, easily.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

  • No clear explanation on multiple hard drive software configuration?

Sorry if there is already a thread on this, but I couldn't find a clear answer on it.  I just put a 60GB SSD in my bay 1 and put my 1TB in bay 2.  I want to use the SSD for apps and the OS and of course the 1TB for files.  Putting the apps on the SSD is already done, the only problem is none of the files are showing up when opening them.  I can still open the 1TB and all my files are there, but if I launch an application from it it still doesn't have the files.  I'm guessing I'm going to have to reference the other drive somehow (this is the part that wasn't explained clearly at all).
Or if anyone knows of a good video on how to do this its greatly appreciated since all youtube pulls up is installing two MacBook Pro hard drives.

Most apps have a preference for their media library.
    Alias and symbolic links work
you could relocate the home account.
60GB is small and cutting it short, even though you only used say 25GB
you willl need to use TRIM Enabler of course. 10% should be allocated to over provisioning also.
the free space should equal how much is written in the course of a month.
and be ready to erase and restore as needed, always have another drive with TRIM Enabler and have a disk image or restore image of the SSD handy.

To successfully relocate your operating system, user accounts and data from one storage device to another, meet the following conditions:
The destination storage device (SSD drive or hard drive) you are migrating to should be physically located in the same computer.  Moving operating system files from one computer to another computer using software not specifically designed for that computer can cause issues due to software, hardware, and firmware version mismatches.

  • What happened to my Hard drive memory?

I have iMac,24", early 2008, with 400GB memory. Up untill recently, about 90 GB was available out of 400. Now since the computer is slow, I was surprised to find only 20 GB is left. I can not account for loss of this memory. Is there any way to find what is taking all that memory and what can be done to recover. Thank you

You are confusing hard drive storage space with RAM (Random Access Memory).
You have 20 GBs of hard drive storage space left.
What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?
Hard Drive full or near full?
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • How do I install Lion on external hard drive? I have purchased and downloaded through App Store but do not know where the download is located so I can install.

I want to install Lion on an external hard drive. The OS was purchased and downloaded through the App Store but I do not know where the file is.

If you downloaded the installer it will be in your applications folder. Failing that use spotlight start typing Install and it should show up.
This is assuming you downloaded the installer from the app store, and didn't just install it onto your mac. If all you have done is install it on your mac. Go to your purchases Lion should show up. Then click download.

  • How do I get my apps purchased on the app store if I had to replace my Hard drive on my Macbook Pro?

I recently got a new hard drive for my laptop and lost everything, so I was wondering where i can go to retrive my apple purchases or if its even possible.

You can re download previous purchases for free using the same Apple ID they were purchased with originally.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
If you have problems, you may need to authorize the Mac.
Launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar click Store > Authorize This Computer
Then try re downloading previous purchases from the Mac App Store.

  • Can anyone help me to transfer everything I have on my Ipad on to a new computer.  my hard drive crashed and a new one was installed and I do not want to loose all my apps or music.  Please help

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for help and maybe someone can help me please.  My hard drive crashed and dell installed a new one.  I have two iphones and an ipad with all my apps, music, amd photos.  Can anyone indicate me what to do so I do not lose everything when I plug in my phone.  Thanks

Naturally you should have a recent backup of your "crashed" hard drive. If you don't, well, hopefully you've learned a lesson but that doesn't solve your current problem.
If all your apps and media were purchased from the iTunes App Store, don't worry about them. Redownload all your apps and media, then allow iTunes to sync with and wipe your iOS devices - which will also put all the apps and media on them. You'll lose your settings, and any data which resided only on the iOS devices, and of course you'll need to organize your iOS folders and home screens and whatnot. But you won't really lose much, and without a backup this is your best choice.
If you have media from sources other than the iTunes App Store, look at Senuti or similar applications designed to copy media from iOS devices to computers. Use that first, then sync as I described in my second paragraph above. (I mention Senuti because it's popular. There are other options which work just as well, and some are even free.)

  • I am trying to free up space on my hard drive. I am wondering what if any of the itunes files for apps or music can be deleted without affecting the use of them in the future if they are loaded on my i phone and i pad 2?

When I search my hard drive to find space for freeing up memory I have a lot of files for Apps, and music.  I am wondering if these are pertinant and need to be kept on my hard drive, or if I can remove them in any way.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I am going to revise my question to this.  If I compress my itunes folder which would save me a considerable amount of space will this make the music and apps information stored in there unsyncable?

  • How do you erase and reinstall a hard drive without a disc? I bought this mac book pro under a year ago and am pretty sure i downloaded mountain lion from the app store. Basically Im having startup issues and this is the final step Ive reached

when I start my laptop it loads a third of the way and shuts down automaticallyI've tried to safe boot, repairing discs and clearing RAM but nothing has worked. basically I've come to the final step of having to a erase my hard drive and reinstall mountain lion however Apple support suggest that I install from a disc however I installed mountain lion from the App Store. can anyone help me go about this?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
