Hard drive options

I have a power mac g5. I have been having problems with applications running REALY, REALLY slow. Shutting down and rebooting took upwards of 10 minutes each. I've reinstalled the OS (twice) and it still takes 8 minutes to boot up and applications still run slow. Not as slow as before, but slow none the less. I'm thinking it might be a "going bad" HD and I want to get another one. Do I have to buy a Mac HD or can I buy one from say Newegg.com? Ive noticed that HD's on the Mac site are about twice as much as buying from a online store like Newegg or tigerdirect. My existing HD is a Maxtor Serial-ATA (thats the same as SATA right?). As long as I get the same SATA drive, will my mac handle it?
Any help or insight is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Todd Coffman-
Any SATA drive will work-you do not need to buy one from Apple. In fact, you can just add a second drive and leave the original one in if you want: Hard Drive Replacement Instructions
The drive compatibility database at accelerate your mac is extremely helpful: Drive Compatibility Database
Is your current drive pretty full? A larger drive is always nice but it will be a bummer if the problem still exists when you are through.

  • HP Pavilion dv6-6c53cl Notebook - Internal Hard Drive Options

    Greetings,
I just purchased an HP Pavilion dv6-6c53cl Entertainment Notebook PC (at Costco), and so far it's been a great deal. Everything seems to be working just fine.
Because I do a lot of development work in Virtual Images, I have been running a number of external Hard Drivers from the notebook over the couple of weeks since I've owned it (including an external SSD). All that seems to work fine.
But, I was wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to install a second Hard Drive or SSD in this Notebook Model. I saw on the HP site that some Notebooks allow the installation of a second Hard Drive, but I couldn't find any information on this model that would suggest it can handle such a configuration.
My primary objective for doing this would be to retain the original 1TB Hard Drive that came with the Notebook, but have a secondary SSD Drive to perhaps run the Paging activity from, when such functionality is needed upon running some of my larger Virtual Images.
Any assistance with clarifying if this is an option with the HP Pavilion dv6-6c53cl would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Wayne

  • Bridge cs6 export - only hard drive option is present. I want ftp and social network module

I want to export my images right from the bridge. Uploading them to different social sites and ftps is a bit of a hassle and it is easy to forget something in the process. It would be so much better if I could just drag files to desired locations/presets.
I've seen something like that in the blogs (but with lower version of CS) where people have facebook and other options. But I can see only hard drive module.
Is it possible? If so - why don't I have this option? What can I do?

If you don’t see the four modules, click the flyout menu and choose “Manage Modules.”
Make sure all four are checked. If you don’t see the four listed, click the little gear, and from ITS flyout menu, choose “Check for Updates.” When you’re through, click the small “Done” button at the bottom to return to the Export Panel main window.
You can start using the export modules directly, but every time you use them you’ll have to go through a long export process. Use presets to streamline this operation, by saving all the work for re-use. You can create multiple presets; for example, you might have several presets for Facebook depending on whether you want to send the images to your wall, or a specific album. We’ll step through the Facebook setup first.
In the Export Panel, highlight “Facebook” and click on the “+” icon at the bottom to Add a new Preset.
The “Add Preset” dialog appears, and the first thing you will need to do is authenticate with Facebook. Note that you will need to authenticate every time you create a new preset, even with the same service, but you won’t need to authenticate when you actually export your images. Click on “Sign In.”
Two things happen: Your browser will be launched, and you’ll see the authentication page from Facebook. You’ll need to enter your credentials, and you can check “Keep me logged in to Adobe Bridge Export Panel.”
    Etc. etc.
You can follow the rest of the instructions here:

  • Which hard drive option for pro apps use on new Macbook Pro?

I'm trying to decide b/t either a 500 GB 7200 drive or the 1 TB 5200 drive on my new 17" MBP. I mostly use FCP, but am learning the other apps as well. The salesman told me today that:
1- The 1 TB 5200 would probably be about 10% slower than the 500 GB 7200 in rendering if my media is on these drives. This assumes neither drive's capacity is too filled.
2- More importantly, if I use an external hard drive for my media then my boot drive will have nothing to do with performance. He said all it would affect is how quickly FCP et al opens originally and that the rest of its active running is done by the RAM. The rendering would be dependent upon the external drive. So, the boot drive wouldn't really matter with this setup.
Does this, especially #2, sound right? If so, I'd definitely take the 1 TB option. But any info or thoughts on this are greatly appreciated, especially as the MBP will be replacing my G5.
Thanks ahead of time for any help!

Oh sure, I know it's always advisable to use a separate video drive. A SSD and that Caldigit VR mini do sound like a great combo and thanks for the heads up about them, but that would be something down the road for me. SSD boot drives aren't big enough for me and are too pricy at this point for my budget. I do plan on using some external storage as my video when I'm editing something bigger than SD. But right now I'm just trying to figure out what my best option is for the boot drive. Primarily I trying to find out if the boot affects the performance of FCP (and the other Pro Apps) when using external storage. If it doesn't, then I know what I should buy.
    Thanks!

  • Question re X220 Hard Drive Options

I had to buy the X220 with a 320GB 5400 RPM hard drive to speed up delivery but really want a 7200 RPM 320GB drive.
I see two possible 7mm options.
    Hitachi Z7K320 (HTS723232A7A364)
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7031179&SRCCODE=PRICEGRAB...
    - Is this the Hitachi that ships in the X220 when purchasing the 320GB 7200 RPM drive?
    - Impossible to find in Canada.
Seagate ST320LT007 (listed on seagate.com) or ST320LT023 (model most vendors sell, but no on seagate.com)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148745
    - Cant tell the difference between the 007 and 023 models.
    - Seagate only lists the ST320LT007 on their site.  Vendors only sell the ST320LT023 model.  Are they the same?
    - Anybody tried the ST320LT023?  Can find this model here in Canada.

If I were you I'd wait, unless you've got to replace a defective drive.
They're milking the situation big time. Seagate for example has not been affected by the flooding, yet is charging the same prices as WD who has been.
Only Hitachi makes the slim drive needed for the X220.
Tiger Direct currentlyt has it in stock for $100, which isn't so terrible.

  • External Hard Drive Options for Back Up - USB 2.0 or FireWire

Needing some advice on this one. Looking to purchase an external hard drive for back up through Time Machine - also running Win XP via Parallels. Should I go USB 2.0 or FireWire or have both options? Is there any difference in speed? I will be also using the external hard drive as needed for other manual back ups and data transfers eg movie projects. (and yes the Macbook has Firewire).
Would appreciate some comment / recommendations.

Hey Pluke and welcome to the forum -
Firewire is faster overall for data transfers especially large or lengthy ones. With this in mind, I would use an external enclosure that has both Firewire and USB.
I'm not sure if this was part of your question or not but I would not include your virtual machine (xp) in your Time Machine backup. The reason is it will fill up your backup drive quickly because your TM backup copies hourly every file that has changes made to it. Your VM file is both large (the size of the virtual drive) and has changes even if you just have it open and not really using it. You should include your VM file in your manual backup instead.

  • Other External Hard Drive Options

At first I thought the Mac mini would be a good idea for extra storage, but as I looked around here, over in Japan, I saw many other external harddrives that are compatible with the Macintosh OS. The few places that do sell Macs are selling the mini for about 70,000 yen, or close to $700 for the 40 gig, and the 80 gig is closer to 100,000 yen.
There are a few non Apple branded options where I could get 250 GB of storage for roughly $180, but I'm wondering if Apple itself sells basic external harddrives (sans all the things you get with the mac mini). Anybody help me out with this or give me some suggestions for good places to put my music and movies? And if you're already using an External Harddrive, is it easy to move things back and forth between your Mac and the HD? Hope you can help.

Apple does not make external hard drives, unless you count the iPods (which can be used in "disk" mode to store files other than music). The Mac mini is a whole computer, it would be an extremely expensive external hard drive for your iBook. I would suggest you look at a FireWire hard drive that's just a hard drive, not a computer. Pretty much any FireWire hard drive will be compatible with your iBook. It's simple to move files from your Mac's hard drive to the external hard drive, it will appear as an icon on your Desktop and you can just drag and drop files from one to the other.

  • PS4 Hard Drive Options

This is still one of the best options http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1443673.htm Open it up, take the hard drive out and pop it in your PS4. Still the cheapest way to upgrade your PS4 to 2tb I believe

Hi so i have a Samsung Spinpoint M9T 2TB. When i installed this to my PS4 last year i was plagued with problems mainly complete system slowdown and in game textures not loading resulting in pop-ins rendered games unplayable such as fall through grounds and just system freezes. Was also running the 1.72 update at that time or newer (Currently using as external hd and works perfectly). As i have run out of space now I am contemplating in getting another hard drive and would like some advice, i also want to know if my problem is related to the amount of power the Spinpoint drive draws as it is 0.85a vs 0.7a on the standard HGST drive Thanks for the help guys

  • External hard drive options and sata 2

Hi guys:) My 100GB hard drive on my comp is always so full. I have a smaller (as in laptop sized) 80GB hard drive that I use for video work. The smaller size is great for portability though I have to use external power. The other big issue is that I only have one firewire slot on my mac and one on the Hard drive which means that I have to capture onto my mac - not great with the limitted space. And so then after that I copy to hard drive.
In the ideal world, I would like to purchase a small in size but huge in capacity hard drive that does not have the above issues. Though lets move back into reality ...
So, I was thinking of getting an external hard drive 500gb, possibly the lacie d2 SATA II https://www.epowermac.com.au/product.asp?P_ID=628 and then purchasing an express card. Why do you guys think?? Is this going to be faster than firewire 400/800 or not. I think you can also get a firewire convertor card too, which then will give my mac two firewire 800 slots. Would this option be better?
Thanks for your time and responses to all those that will assist:)

What format do you work with ?
I'll have a stab and say, Pal dv but if it's Pal Hdv
    the same applies.
If it's Pal DvCpro then sing out - the rules change
    somewhat for that.
Your transfer device is a camera ?
You're recording on tape, right ?
    1) You can configure your system like this.
    Mac>fw drive>fw to deck/cam - daisy chained using the
    fw 400 port.
Put the cam/deck on the end b/c that device is likely
to be rated at 100mb/sec so it's the slowest. That
should negate the capture then additional transfer.
    2) Plenty of thoughts about LaCie - some love 'em,
some hate 'em. Same goes with all drive
manufacturers. Personally I prefer IBM/Hitachi and
Seagate - shrug. Some others Western Digital or
Maxtor. No drive is bullet proof - and painful when
    you lose one.
    3) Express card - yes if you need the raw throughput
and plan to Raid. It's not going to speed up anything
too much though at capture as your cam/deck will be
trundling along at 100 mb max.
You'll need to buy Sata drives and enclosures. You
may get some more RT in fcp.
    4) You may get 2 slots on the one card but they share
the same bus - the best fw rigs have seperate buses
    or daisy chained as above.
Anyway that's a start - you'll have to fill in the
    blanks for us.
I work with dvpal atm and wish to transfer video from a camera. My church will be getting some professional cameras soon, so i'm not sure exactly what format that'll be but no doubt higher quality. I'll also have use of a new beaut mac pro at my church, though I'll still wish to work at home as well which is why I wish to resolve my issue.
I cant currently daisy chain with my 80GB hard drive due to it only having one fire wire input.
I didnt explain that the express card I was looking at was a SATA one also. According to the specs, the 'Tempo SATA Express 34' controller has two external, 3Gb/s, SATA II ports, and plugs directly into a MacBook Pro (15" or 17"). It makes it sound like each port has a transfer rate of 3Gb/s which is heaps more than 800?? I suppose one issue with doing it this way though is the issue of hooking it up to the mac pro which I dont think has an express slot.
Hope this time i've made better sense:)

  • Hard drive options for New Macbook Pro 17 inch

I'm interested in purchasing a new MAcbook Pro 17 inch. I'll be using it primarily for work in Adobe Illustrator. I'm wondering if the speed difference of the 500GB 7200 drive will be noticeable compared to the standard 750GB 5400 hard drive. Are there any bench tests out there?

  • Hard drive options for Logic Express with a Mac Mini

I'm considering getting a Mac Mini to use for recording video from a medical endoscopic camera. The reasons for choosing a Mac Mini are 1) low cost 2) small size and 3) no fans - blowing dust around an operating theatre can be a risk (therefore even if cost wasn't an issue, the fans would preclude other mac models).
I've been looking at the spec of a Mac Mini - they have 5400 rpm hard drives and only 1 firewire 800 port. I'm using a Canopus ADVC 55 to convert analogue video to DV which connects using Firewire.
Will the built in hard drive be ok, or should I consider replacing it with a 7200 rpm drive, or get an external Firewire drive. PResumably, with only 1 firewire port on the Mac Mini I would need to find either a hard drive with 2 firewire ports to chain devices (which I've heard can be a problem) or perhaps get a firewire hub (similar problem?).
Currently I'm using a MacBook Pro with an internal 7200 rpm drive and this works fine (except when it gets low on hard drive space and I get dropped frames, leading to complete loss of the recording...).

Thanks - I just did a quick search and there are some Firewire 800/400 'bilingual' hubs around at reasonable prices.
I'm tempted to try the Mac Mini server, and perhaps have the 2 drives in a Raid 0 configuration. I could then have it backing up to a Time Capsule overnight (to mitigate the risk of using Raid 0).
Recording to an external drive might be useful though - as it would be a quick way of moving the data to a Mac Pro for compression for archiving. I find moving 10-20GB files over 802.11n to be very time consuming.
I'll certainly bear the dust in mind in terms of the risk to the Mac Mini (I've seen PC's having failed power supplies because the air inlets have been clogged with dust). My main concern however would be the risk of infection due to the fans causing air movement. There is an enclosed space it could be located, not great for cooling though.

  • Hard drive options - WD3200BEVT vs WD3200BEVE

    Hi all,
I am looking to replace my hard drive with bigger one and am being pointed towards 320GB Western Digital Scorpio 2.5"SATA Drive. The recommended one has a product number WD3200BEVE but I've found one on eBay for a great price with product number WD3200BEVT. Does anyone know what the difference in the T or E is all about and whether WD3200BEVT will work with the Powerbook?
    Let me know.
    Cheers.

The BEVT has a SATA interface and can't be used in any Powerbook. You need the BEVE with its PATA, or ATA/IDE, interface. SATA is a newer drive interface than PATA. It's the standard in current notebook computers, replacing PATA.

  • MEGA 180 Hard Drive Option 3.5" to 2.5"?

    Hey All,
    Happy Holidays!
Just wondering if anyone out there has converted their 3.5" drive to a 2.5" to open up room in the case and allow more air flow and possibly lower heat?  Was looking at getting this neat little unit to make the conversion.  Any thoughts?
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=244974&CatId=81
    Cheers!

    That's great news Stu.
However I don't know much about hard drives and was wondering which would be a better fit for my system?  PATA 2.5" 5400RPM or 2.5" 7200RPM
Also which brand do you recommend?  Hitachi,   Maxtor MobileMax, Toshiba,  Seagate Momentus,  Western Digital Scorpio, Fujitsu.
Having a hard time finding Fujitsu drives now it seems.  I could go with a SATA 2.5" drive if I could find a PATA to SATA adapter cause the Mega 180 already has a SATA power cable.
    So to recap:
    1. 5400 or 7200?
    2. Dependable Brand?
    3. Is it worth it to try and convert PATA to SATA?
This is a great forum and has helped me a lot with my Mega 180 so all input is gladly appericated once again.  Happy New Year All!
