Hard drive - out of space - set external drive ?

my startup disc does not have enough space left to burn dvd's.
can i set idvd to use a different disc for the encode/assets ?
thanks,
stephen

Hi
As Glo H writes.
Or put in another way.
iDVD Can't address any other external or internal hard disks but the start-up
boot hard disk for it's scrap files. And these together with Mac OS (UNIX) needs
about 25Gb free space for normal SD 4x3 video.
HD - needs much more.
BUT One can.
• Get an external hard disk
• FIREWIRE - *is a must* to do this (WesternDigitals WD - doesn't work - My LaCie does)
• Format it as Mac OS Extended
• Put Mac OS and iLife on this
• Start from this external hard disk (and as it's new will have plenty of space)
I do this and it works great.

  • I thought I set up my computer to store my I tunes library to my external hard drive.  However, I recently found out that my library is stored on my main C drive.  Does any one know how to tranfer the libray from the C drive to an exteranl dirve.

I thouhgt I set up ITunes to store my library on the external drive.  However, I recently sound out that the library is stored on my main C drive.  Is there someway to move the library to the exernal drive and still have everything function correctly?

If you go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced then you can change the location of the iTunes media folder.  Keep in mind that if you do this and you unplug your external hard drive, iTunes won't be able to locate your music and you may get the little red "!" marks.

  • Running out of hard drive space---can I use my external hard drive-??

I have a 16GB iPod nano. I hope I can explain my problem well enough.
My laptop computer has the iTunes that I use for syncing my iPod. It has over 25gb of songs in it, but my problem is that it has completely run out of hard drive space, and I don't think I can delete anything else.
I have a 250 GB external hard drive that also has all my songs backed up on it, that has hard drive space left on it.
Is there a way to load new music into the external hard drive, that will sync up to the iPod when I connect it to the laptop, WITHOUT putting a copy of it into the laptop, and taking up space-?
The way it appears to me, and I may be wrong, is that there are 2 copies of eaxh song on my laptop---the one in my music folder, and then the one in the iTunes folder. Is that correct-?
OR, is there a way to remove some of the songs from the laptop, and put them into the external hard drive, but will still sync up to the iPod-?
Thanks for any help that anyone can offer, I'm desperate ~!
I'm not sure if this can be done, but I'd hate to think that I cannot put new music onto my iPod.
    Thanks~!

    Hello melbernai,
I think your best move would be to the move the entire iTunes library including of all of its file to your external hard drive and running your iTunes from there. You can even have it so that all newly imported music is saved to the external drive as well.
For more help on how to do this, I would check out this article on how to move and run your iTunes library from an external hard drive.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • TM: When external hard drive space runs out, can I add another drive?

I am using an external hard drive 1TB to back-up my new iMac with TM. When the external drive space runs out, do I have to buy another drive with much more space (e.g. 2-3TB) and start over, or can I just add a second external hard drive 1TB (will TM recognize the second one as an addition)?
    Thanks for any help.

First off you should know that when Time Machine runs out of space on an external drive, it deletes the oldest backup you have. So if you are running out of space you probably don't need to worry as Time Machine will handle it. Just make sure the Time Machine backup drive has a higher capacity than the amount of data you have on your internal drive and you'll be fine. However, if you'd like to keep a lot of backups over a period of time you may want to consider getting a whole new drive. The only way you can add more drives to back up to is by using RAID 0 which I wouldn't recommend unless you have to due to the fact that you'd be more likely to lose data. The easiest option would be to buy a 2TB drive and use it with Time Machine.

  • HELP, RAN OUT OF SPACE! TRANSFER SONGS TO EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE (xhd)

I spent forever filling my iPod video with digitized songs from my CD collection and have many songs left that didn't fit. I bought a Lacie XHD as a library so that I can move all the songs back and forth from my iPod to the External Hard Drive on an as needed basis.
I still have the ORIGINAL songs saved on 3 different PCs all with an authorized copy of iTunes. I now have ran out of space on 3 computers and 1 iPod Video and promised my wife that I would get rid of all the CDs months ago.
The problem is that I have tried different fixes, programs that were recommended but the tags, iTunes reading of the xhd, etc. get screwed up along the way.
What is the best way to simplify this swap?
    Any help is most appreciated!
    Thanks.....

I am afraid you question is not very clear.
I understand you correctly you have iTunes installed on three different computers each with their own libraries of music.
Is there any duplication of files between the computers or are they all different? I am going to assume there is no duplication.
You want to transfer all the music files to an external drive.
Do you mind losing play counts, ratings and playlists? I am not sure that it is possible to retain all the information from all the separate library databases, but you could retain one. Let’s call that computer A.
So here is one way of doing it.
You need to have all your music in the iTunes Music folder on computer A, and if it isn’t you need to consolidate.
With iTunes closed, copy the iTunes folder from My Music on computer A onto the external drive. Now start iTunes with the shift key held down. When asked to choose a library navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
You should now have a duplicate iTunes running on the external drive.
    Now go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>General
Make sure that “Keep iTunes Music folder organised” and “Copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library” are checked.
Now close iTunes and eject the external drive and plug it into the second PC. Start iTunes with the shift key held down and choose iTunes library.itl on the external drive. Now use add folder to library to add the iTunes Music folder on the internal drive to iTunes. If you have music files in other folder add those too.
Now repeat the process on the third PC.
You should now be able to use the amalgamated library on any of the three PCs by plugging the external drive.
Does that sound as though it is what you want to do?

  • I'm out of space on my hard drive. How do I move move entire photo albums from iphoto and save them to an external drive to free up space?

I'm out of space on my hard drive. How do I move move entire photo albums from iphoto and save them to an external drive to free up space?

You do not move the albums - you move the entire iphoto library intake as a single entity
Make sure your external drive is formatted Ma OS extended (journaled) - then
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How do I use an external hard drive with iMovie 10.0.1? I have run out of disk space on my Macbook Air.

How do I use an external drive with iMovie 10.0.1?  It is not obvious and I have run out of space.

If you want to move a complete iMovie 10 library (file with .imovielibrary extension) click on the library in the libraries pane and select  File - Consolidate Library Media.  This ensures that all media is copied to the library.  You can then move the library onto your external drive using Finder.  The first time to want to access it from iMovie you will have to tell it where it is by choosing  File - Open Library -Other and navigating to it.
If you only want to transfer part of a library to another drive, create a new library a at the desired location  File - Open Library - New  and copy projects and events to it from within iMovie.
Its all described in iMovie help - "Work with multiple libraries".
    Geoff.

  • How do I set up ITunes on Lap so that it downloads to an external hard drive and doesn't eat up space on my laptop?

iTunes was eating up all my hard drive, so I bought an external hard drive
    Question 1:
After I move the iTunes file over to the external hard drive, do I just move the file on my lap top to the trash folder and will that free up space on my hard drive?
    Question 2:
If question 1 is good, the next time I down load a movie or song is there anything I need to do to get it to download to the iTunes folder on my external hard drive?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    This article will help you.
    1. Yes, you can trash the original folder. If you have a large media library, then yes you should free up a good chunk of space. However, you must also empty the trash. You can't just leave it in the trash or it will take up space.
    2. Once you select the new media folder in iTunes as the article tells you, I believe all new downloaded media will automatically go to that new folder.

  • I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?

I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?  It doesn't look like I created any more space by doing this, AND I totally lost all my iTunes playlists.  I'm not sure if because I added old library materials manually if this messed up my playlists, or if the new location is just not reading my moved library.  In any case, I followed step by step instructions and found a few holes and thought I'd just "figure it out" but I guess I'm not as smart as I thought since I'm still scratching my head many hours later.
    Thanks for any support ;-)

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
