Hard drive partitions are not showing in Startup DIsk

My hard drive is partitioned into two volumes. HD1 & HD2 (Both 500 MB)
I had Snow Leopard installed on one (HD2) and Mavericks istalled on the other.(HD1)
Both volumes were visible in the Startup Disk option in System Preferences and I could restart from either.
I upgraded the Mavericks istallation to Yosemite - worked OK.
System Disk option showed both HD1 & HD2
Restarted the Mac from HD2 in Snow Leopard mode - no probs.
Then the problem started. I wanted to restart from HD1 in Yosemite mode.
Went in System Preferences to Startup Disk option - HD1 did not show in the window - only HD2 (Snow Leopard) & Network Startup.
Any ideas anyone? (Could be a bug?)

When I restarted using Com+Opt+P+R it went into Yosemite mode with both volumes showing in Startup disk.
Restarting with HD2 (Snow Leopard) gave me the same problem again.

  • Partition does not show as startup disk

I have partitioned my iMac drive and have snow leopard on HD and Yosemite on HD2.  When I go to change to the Yosemite partition (HD2) it does not show in systems available to startup from, even though it used to be there.

Mine doesn't either, or rarely (did in the past) so I just use Windows Boot Camp control panel where both do show up.
If you alter or resize or create a 3rd partition, that also can happen.
Some people use rEFIt boot manager, I never have and so can't comment on its utility, but might want to check it out.

  • Portable hard drive powering, but not showing up in Disk Utility

I just purchased an ADATA portable hard drive and my MacBook Pro powers it but does not recognize it.  It is brand new and has not been used on any other machine.  Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Justin

Some portable drives draw too much power, the Mac might have cut it off or it doesn't have enough power for it.
It might be defective, take it back and buy a quality Hitachi external drive, Western Digital next in quality, preferablly self powered and not a eco-type drive.

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

Depends on where you got it - if it came on yoru compujter then you need to have accepeted it in the App store - and it will be in your purchases when you log in with the Apple ID that you used to set up your computer - it mahy be hidden - if you do not find it unhide applications in teh App store

  • Drive Not Showing In Startup Disk

I have re setup my MacBook Pro, all seems well apart from this little problem. My Mac OS X Partition or Windows Partition shows in startup Disk.
Both Operating Systems do startup fine though.
I have my disk partitioned like this
    Free Space
    Windows 7
    Mac OS X
Its setup in this way so i can use TrueCypt for the Windows side.
Does anyone know how to correct this please?
You can use this link to view a screenshot

    Thanks

if you try to verify the disk, dose it report any errors? (open disk utility, click on the Macintosh HD, click on the repair tab, click verify disk.)
If you option boot, dose the computer list both Boot Volumes?
Have you tried blessing the mac hard drive?
ie: "sudo bless -folder /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices -bootinfo"
(note the above bless command blesses the Hard Drive with the name "Macintosh HD", if you mac volume has a different name, change to match your hard drive's name.)

  • Finding photos on hard drive that are not in PSE?

There may be an easy way to do this, but I can't figure it out.
I would like to identify all of the photos scattered around my hard drive that have not been added to a PSE catalog.  Is there an easy way to do this?
    Any help appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • XP partition does not show in startup manager

When I boot into the startup manager (hold down alt-key during boot) the XP partition does not show as boot drive. I can boot into XP only through the startup-drive preference pane. This problem is still present after the update to 10.5.2. Any solution besides reformating the drive? Thanks!

    Hi Gulliver,
have a look at rEFIt http://refit.sourceforge.net/ as a Boot-Manager alternative.

  • My new USBs are not showing up in Disk Utility

HI ! I just purchased 25 new USBs to upload biz marketing content to. The USBs are not showing up in the FInder (I've checked all the options in the Preferences Pane) nor are they showing in Disk Utility. What am I missing? Or should I just return them?

Let's clarify what you have written:
    1. My usb drives seem to work with other usbs (that have been used on both mac and windows machines before - still works).
What specific USB drives are you refering to?
Are they the 25 in question?
Have you tested the USP ports on your MBP with other USB drives (not the 25) or other peripheral devices to make certain that the ports are functional?
    2. I've had the usb's reformatted on a windows machine and we were able to plug it in to an old mac to see it there.
Are these the 25 USB drives in question?  If so, what was the format?
    3. It is only when I have returned to my office that ONLY these usbs do not work.
These are the 25 USB drives that have been formatted and are seen on the 'old mac' but do not appear on your MBP?  They still do not appear in Disk Utility?
Is this a Mavericks issue? How else would it be visible on older Mac's and not my new Power PC?
It should not be a Mavericks issue
What do you mean by 'new Power PC'?  Are you using a MBP or a Windows machine or is this a typo?  Exactly what MBP model are you using?
    Ciao.

  • Boot Camp partition not showing in startup disk or when holding alt key

I've read countless discussions about similar questions to this one, however, I still haven't been able to find any solution.
I have an old 2006 MacBook that has just been fully updated and reformatted. I'm running OSX 10.7.5 and Boot Camp 4.
I went through the Boot Camp installation from an Windows ISO image in my usb drive, where it succesfully downloaded all files needed, and prompted me to make the partition, after which it restarted and was supposed to take me to the installation manager in the Windows partition. I first got the "No bootable driver" error, to which I read I was supposed to restart the computer, hold the alt key, and choose the boot camp partition. However, it does not show up. I only get Mac and Recover drivers.
I went into the Mac's startup disk, and only the Mac driver is showing, no Boot Camp driver, however, when I go into Disk Utilities, I can see that the BootCamp driver there.
I read somewhere that I should zap pram and reset SMC, which I did with their instructions. It didn't change anything, I still only get the Mac driver and Recovery when hitting the alt key.
Does it have something to do with my MacBook being older? That's the only reason I can think that would not allow me to do this.
Let me know what other info I can give you so that you can please help me!! Thanks in advance!

In last resort I solved my missing BOOTCAMP partition problem using a program called: iPartition from coriolis systems located in the United Kingdom http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php it took me a coupleof days to figure out the credit card system they have Hint: use your 9 digit zip code to find your credit card address and call your bank if you have an overseas hold on the card!!!! The program found my missing BOOTCAMP partition and restored it. It did take a couple of e-mails to learn to use their program. Let me know how you turn out!

  • External Hard Drive - Partition or Not?

Ok, I have looked everywhere for the answer and everyone has a different opinion. So, I'd like to get opinions on my situation because the Discussions have always been the most helpful.
I recently had a post about whether I should upgrade my Powerbook's hard drive or just get an external Firewire drive to transport files here and there. In the end, I decided to get a 400GB internal drive (for storage) and bought an enclosure for it, since my hard drives only seem to be shrinking. I got an amazing price so I went for it - the other thing will just have to wait. I decided to keep my iPhoto Library on it, backup of important files (also burned to cds)... you get the point.
Up until now, I have only been backing up my user folder because I was only interested in keeping those files. After visiting the Discussions, I've learned a lot (what can I say, I'm young and I know my way around a computer, but I still have A LOT MORE to learn). Ok, so now I guess it's time to make a bootable copy of my hard drive (at least the Mini, because that's where all of the files are).
To the point... Should I partition my 400GB drive into 2 sections: one for a backup and one for all the other storage? Can I boot from this if my Mini's hard drive fails? Or is it best to leave the 400GB as storage and get an 80GB solely for bootable backup?
The problem is I don't have a lot of money to spend on this. I was looking forward to getting the new 30GB iPod (for music and files), but protecting my files is more important. There are so many options, but they are expensive options (to me, at least). I would be so grateful if anyone has suggestions on the best way to go about this. Thank you!!
12" Powerbook G4, Intel Mac Mini, iPod Nano   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Personally I would choose no. 2 primarily because I like to keep backups separate from regular working drives to minimise risks of mishaps, problems, theft etc.
If something happens to the single 400GB drive you could, potentially, lose both stored data as well as the backup. Ultimately it might cost more to have two drives but when it comes to backups I prefer not to cut too many corners.

  • Moved Itunes to external hard drive & now Ipod not showing up in itunes?

I recently installed an external hard drive and moved Itunes and all my music to it. Now when I plug in my Ipod, Itunes doesn't recognize it. And it doesn't show up in my computer, but the pod says its "connected". It does show up in the USB devices and so does the hard drive, but they are listed seperately. But both devices are plugged into the same USB spliter.
    what is happening?
    help!!!

    Hi, BreezerSB2.
It sounds like you may not have followed the instructions described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
If that's not possible - or you don't want to do so - and the music files are in fact on your external drive, you can add them to your iTunes Library by referring to this article 's Add to Library section.

  • Iphoto library on external hard drive now does not show all the photos when i access it from macbook

i backed up iphoto library to an external hard drive.  Deleted photo library on the macbook.  After transferring some new photos to macbook from a camera, when i access the iphoto library on external hard drive only the new photos show up.  Originals are still in files, but don't appear when opening iphoto library on external hard drive.

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • After change of hard drive batteries are not available anymore... Any advice?

After my hard drive has been changed at the Apple Store today (it had corrupted files and didn't work anymore), the battery of my MacBook Pro (13 Inch, Mid 2009, HDD 160GB OSX 10.5) doesn't charge anymore. It shows the "X" in the battery symbol and says "no batteries available". The System Profiler says that the battery is not installed. How can I install it? Any help/advice? I am traveling for three hours from tomorrow morning... Would be great if anybody has quick advice on how to solve this problem myself as I won't be able to go to an Apple Store for the next three weeks. Thanks a lot!

Outside of contacting Apple there's not a whole lot that you can do unless you open the computer up yourself to try and diagnose and fix it which would void your warranty, as the battery and other components (other than the memory and the hard disk) are not user-servicable parts.

  • How do you erase an external hard drive which will not show up on your computer?

I bought a LaCie porsche design 2TB external hard drive  from the Apple Store to use with time machine on my MAC 2 months ago. It will no longer show up on my desktopn. After speaking with LaCie, they sent me a replacement. However, I have to send the brooken one back to them and since we could not erase it or anything on my Mac is there anyway to erase the hard drive before sending it back to them with all my information on there?
    Message was edited by: carolsh

I know. But after Yahoo, Target , Neimans and others. But I agree. They even sent me a more expensive replacement as they did not have my model in stock and is backordered. So, a win win situation. I was impressed that the tech person spent about an hour on the phone with me trying a variety of options. At first, they were going to charge me shipping- but then she changed her mind and shipped the replacement 1 day fed ex. I guess that is why I always buy LaCie vs others. My older LaCie which I still had but was smaller- I plugged in and did a back-up and I had just enough room on it so I have that for safe keepings now as well.
Thanks again for your pleasant response. I guess I need to limit my profile to "registered members" only. I hope Apple monitors these discussions and people's responses periodically.
