Hard drive permissions problems

My Mac Pro has four internal drives plus a fifth, external drive. I keep running into error messages about “you don’t have permission to do that.” Here are the five drives and their permissions:
Macintosh HD (internal drive)
thomaskehoe – Read only
system – Read & Write
wheel – Read only
everyone – Read only
SSD (start-up drive, internal)
system – Read & Write
wheel – Read only
everyone – Read only
Documents HD (internal drive)
thomaskehoe – Read & Write
tdk (Me) - Read & Write
system – Read & Write
admin – Read & Write
everyone – Read only
2TB HD (internal drive, Time Machine only)
thomaskehoe – Read only
staff – Read only
everyone – Read only
Videos 2010 (external drive)
tdk (Me) - Read & Write
staff – Read only
everyone – Read only
When I open the “Users & Groups” System Preference panel I see three accounts:
Thomas David Kehoe (current user) - Admin
Thomas Kehoe - Admin
Guest User – Sharing only
But the hard drives list the following seven accounts:
thomaskehoe
tdk (Me)
system
admin
staff
wheel
everyone
Lots of questions:
- Why doesn’t SSD (the startup-drive) show my account? Is Lion somehow running on Macintosh HD even though SSD is set as the start-up disk? From the speed of start-up it seems to be starting from the SSD. The desktop icons have Macintodsh HD as the top icon.
- Am I “thomaskehoe” or “tdk (Me”)? Are these accounts? If not, what are they?
- I appear to be “Thomas David Kehoe – Admin,” not “Thomas Kehoe – Admin.” Should I get rid of the latter account?
- I understand that “everyone” isn’t an account.
- “admin,” “wheel,” and “staff” seem to be different ways of saying “group,” which isn’t an account. Why do different hard drives have different names for this?
- “system” seems to be on every drive that has an operating system, so that’s not an account either.
- Should I set every permission to “Read & Write” except “everyone”?
- Should I run Disk Utility > First Aid > Verify Disk Permissions and Repair Disk Permissions? I ran this on SSD and it found lots of stuff to repair.
iTunes and iPhoto seem to be the apps that have the most problems with permissions.

You are getting groups and accouunts confused. You have 2 admin accounts, either because you created them or because you used Migration Assistant after Setup Assistant, instead of on your first boot. The Guest user is standard from 10.6. It is an account that can be used by guests and will preserve no data created after use and return to default.

Easy way to find out Apple Menu > About this Mac > Startup Disk.

You're asking me? If you have everything you need in “Thomas David Kehoe – Admin,” then, yes you can delete the other account.
- Should I set every permission to “Read & Write” except “everyone”?
Nooo. Don't do that!
When you "Get Info" (command-i) on the you should have "Ignore ownership" at the bottom NOT checked.
Although, this may not be an option on internals.
- Should I run Disk Utility > First Aid > Verify Disk Permissions and Repair Disk Permissions? I ran this on SSD and it found lots of stuff to repair.
You can. As long as it reports "Permissions have been repaired" you're good to go. No need to run it more than once, it won't change. Read this.

  • Airport extreme with USB hard drive permissions problem may be parallels

I cannot access my external hard drive because of some permission problem. I know because I can see this through the disk repair utility. I've attached my external hard drive to my airport extreme. It originally came up well and worked fine. Then it lost connection and now doesn't recognize my password. To confuse matters worse I have parallels installed. This might be where the password problem is as the mac wants to access as a guest and the parallels (windows MX) as my account name. It's all pretty complicated to explain. What I want to do now is just to forget the airport plan and reach my hard drive but it won't boot up even with airport off and a direct firewire connection. It does show up in disk repair utility but with permissions. How can I get to these permissions and drop them. What if they're windows permissions somehow? How can I get started.
    Thanks

I have a very similar problem. I have a 2.8 GHz iMac with 2GB RAM and am using OS X v10.5.4, and an Airport Extreme (v7.3.2), both updated to latest firmware. I have a 500 GB TrekStor external HD connected to the AEBS via USB. The TrekStor HD was pre-formatted in FAT32 and is visible on my iMac's desktop and in Finder but I cannot transfer files to it or see files on it. When I drag and drop a file on the TrekStor, it sometimes seems to go well but then the file is not visible via Finder, and sometimes I get an "insufficient privileges" message. I repair permissions on the iMac's internal HD without any change. I am logged in as the admin. All assistance is much appreciated!

  • 10.6.6 update killed Hard Drive - endless problems

Like most people posting here the 10.6.6 update went fine at first, the App Store worked perfectly (of course...), then I tried to move a file to my External HDD and I got Error -36.
I rebooted. Grey Screen with the spinning wheel never ending. Ran all sorts of Disk Utility things and various error messages came up (Signal 8, I/O ballsed-up - stuff I don't normally deal with so don't know about), then reading forums and this site in particular led to no avail. So, re-installed, losing a ton of stuff (yes, I know...). So far, so fairly pi$$ed off.
So I'm back with 10.6 trying to update using 10.6.6 at first, then 10.6.5 (both normal and combo update) - nothing works. The Software Update fails when it tries to update before restarting, then each DMG file from Apple has an invalid checksum.
So, for the chance to buy another version of Angry Birds I lose tons of work and my MBP is knackered.
Can anyone suggest a next step? Merci in advance,

That's why I'm thinking the drive really is going bad. If it can't write/read from those areas, then you're not going to get a good download unless it finds and area that has no problems.
First, open Disk Utility and repair permissions. You'll probably see lots of things that aren't repaired. That's normal.
Second, boot from the Install disk and repair the disk using DU.
    Then, try the update again.
Also, on the original gray install disk that came with your computer is the Apple Hardware Test. If you boot to that disk while holding down the D key, it should start the hardware test. You can then run all the diagnostics to see if it finds anything. I haven't run them, so I'm not sure what options are available, but if it has an extensive test for the hard drive, that's probably what you want to do. But, don't exclude any other hardware tests, it could be something else interfering.
Even if it says the Disk is OK and the SMART status in DU is Verified, the drive still could be failing.
I had a drive that was acting up only when accessing certain files. I repaired, erased, installed, repaired, … Finally, the SMART status indicated the drive was failing. That was over several days of pulling my hair out trying to repair/restore etc. My point being it is hard to tell when/if a drive is going bad. Yours may be fine. You may suffer like I did for several days trying to get it working, eventually finding out you've been wasting your time.
Since it sounds like you don't have a backup, you might consider purchasing an external drive, installing Snow Leopard on that, and then boot from it. If everything works fine on that, you can blame the internal drive. If it is still wonky, then there's something else going on. You've still got a good backup drive to use in the future, either way.

  • Can't update iPod - external hard drive permissions error

I'm trying to change file permissions on an iTunes folder on an external hard drive. I'm able to get to the folder, but when I open the documents info screen, the Ownership and Permission section of it is disabled and I can't change it. I'm the administrator of the computer- there are no other users other than me, so I assume I can change permissions for a folder.
The problem is that all the easy options (I'm no UNIX tinkerer) are grayed out. I don't have the option to lock/unlock, change permissions, etc... because there is no way to access these options. See the screenshot of the folder here:
    http://digital-goddess.com/img/itunes_screengrab.jpg
I have tried changing permissions on the parent of this folder and applying to all subfolders, but that didn't change this folder or my access to it. This folder holds half my iTunes library and throws up an error that I don't have sufficient permissions to update my iPod. This is very annoying and worrisome. Any help?

    Sorry, I forgot one step.
When you expand 'Details' a button called 'Apply to enclosed items..' appears. Click on that to apply all permissions to the files inside the folder.
You can also use a free (donationware) utility called BatchMod to set the correct permissions.
    Hope this helps.
    M
    Edit:
Just realized, you have that folder on an external HD.
Apply the Ownership & Permissions to all contents of the drive to prevent possible trouble with other applications.

  • Partitioned External Hard Drive - Permissions.

I have an external hard drive that is partitioned into two volumes. Recently one of the volumes has not been showing on the desktop. I tried repairing and verifying the drive with Dick Utility (this second partition is visible with a generic icon) and says everything is okay. I think this might be a permissions issue - this problem appeared shortly after changed volume permisions for differnt users. Problem is no user can see the drive (Admin or others). Is there any way to revert, delete or fix this so that I can access the second volume?

  • External Hard drive permissions

I have a 4 TB external hard drive which is formatted as NTFS - when I load it on my mac I can only read the drive and cannot edit, add, delete etc. therefore obviously making it useless!
This problem hadn't occurred to me before purchasing my mac so I guess I have 2 questions,
    1. Is there a single format that I could use which would allow me to read and write on my Windows PC and Mac.
    2. Is there a stable and reliable way of changing the permissions on this drive so that I can read and write on both my mac and PC? Also as it is several TB in size and I do not have a larger drive to back it up to is there a way I could do this without losing the data??
    Thanks

Great I'll try formatting it to that - will I be able to use Disk Utility to do that??
I've downloaded paragon which has worked a treat for now but I don't particularly want to pay for it... needs must perhaps though.

  • Spotlight not finding files on my Hard Drive - permissions issue?

I found that Spotlight in Mountain Lion was often not finding files when searching for words within the file (searching file names seemed to be OK).
I found various threads suggesting that it may be a problem with File Permissions. I use Dropbox and was concerned it may have messed up permissions after a relinking a while ago.
I tried to reset permissions from within Dropbox (under Settings, as suggested by some), but no help.
Finally I found this EXCELLENT TIP to reset permissions from within the Repair Utility (in Mountain Lion), Not the Disk Utility, which I had not been aware of:https://discussions.apple.com/message/20421138#20421138
It took a little while and then Spotlight re-indexed all my files. SO FAR it seems to be working well.
    THANK YOU!!

    Might try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • HELP!~  new mac user with MAJOR external hard drive/iTunes problems

    Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me out. I just got my new Powerbook Pro 2.0. It is really nice, but I am having a **** of a time with iTunes. I had an old Sony Viao and my friend turned me on to mac. So here I am, new computer and new 80G iPod. I have 120G of music on my external hard drive that played music right from the HD on my Vaio with no problems (until I upgraded to iT7.0, then the music ran choppy, but thats another issue). No, thinking that the Mac and iTunes will work perfectly together, I plugged in my External HD, turned on all the equipment, the mac finds the HD and I can see the music. Good. So, I change the location on the preferences to find the music on the ExHD and nothing. Then, I read all the forums and all and try EVERYTHING, moving the .xml file to the dektop, restarting iTunes, changing the location again, NOTHING works. I am about as frustrated as I can be. With over 26,000 songs that I cannot listen to.... I am about to regret this discision to get the mac. Any ideas? I also tried copy the files in the iTunes folder on the mac to the folder on the ExHD, but i don't know how on mac (there is no copy and paste command when you right click the mouse). I know my frustration is because I am new and dont know all the tricks yet.
I wish I could just call my buddy, but I am in Afghansitan fighting the taliban and he is in Hawaii. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks
MBP 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Brand New Mac user.......

Select your ext HD and do a key board command - CMD+I (Get Info - File Menu). Under the Ownership & Permissions tab - do you have read and write access? If not give yourself that access. You may be prompted for your admin password.
If your ext HD is the same one you used with the Vaio then I am thinking your ext HD is formated as a FAT32 and not a NTFS. Mac can read NTFS but not write to a NTFS format disk. If it is FAT32 then Mac can read and write. If it is a HFS+ format (Mac format) then there is no issue of read and write unless the disk is locked.
To copy files from one HD to anorther on a Mac - all you need to do is select and drag to the new location.
Check the Help Menu's of iTunes and the Finder. There is wealth of info built into your Mac OSX.

  • Time machine and hard drive space problems

It's a long story, but in a nutshell...I've had some problems with my time machine backups on my external hard drive and my MacBook Pro has been taking a long time time boot up.  So, I decided to wipeout the backups on my external by deleting them (I know that's a bad idea) and then I started to transfer all the stuff from my MacBook Pro that I wanted to backup, and now I have ran out of room on the external (1TB) drive.  However, the space that is being used doesn't seem to match what should be available.  There is around 200gb (I think) that isn't accounted for.....is there some hidden stuff I might have missed?

johnl927 is suggesting you wipe your external hard drive to remove any ghost files or errors in the file system. That would be the fastest and least time consuming way to go.
Your alternative is to run Disk Utility, verify disk and the partitions of the external hard drive, and if still in doubt verify permissions. The disk may sometimes claim to have less free space than really available because at some point in the past your computer or else where you plugged it in forgot to do some general housekeeping on the external hard drive.

  • External hard drive mounting problems :(

I've been using a Western Digital My Book Pro 500GB drive on my G4 (mirror door) with OS X 10.4.8 via FireWire 400 for a long time now, works great. It looks like this:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=242
When I try to connect it to my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.4.6) via FireWire 400 or USB 2.0, it recognizes the drive, even mounts it (according to Disk Utility), but it does not show up in Finder. It's totally unusable. The icon in disk utility when the drive is mounted, is not a drive icon. It's just like a blank document icon. When I unmount the drive, it shows the drive icon.
It also does not connect to my wife's PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.8.
    What I've tried:
    - I've tried connecting the drive via USB and Firewire
    - I've tried shutting down the laptops, and re-booting.
    - I've tried zapping the PRAM on them while booting back up.
    - I've tried shutting down the hard drive, turning the drive on, waiting, and then connecting the drives again.
    - I've tried to access the drive via terminal, and it does not allow me to CD into the drive. It says "permission denied"
    - I've tried verifying the disk
    - I've tried repairing the disk.
    - I've tried Disk Rescue II 1.1 (which allows me to "recover files" but it's a lengthy process, esp for 250GB I have on it, that you have to restore to another hard drive)
Is this a permissions problem? I don't get how come it works with one of my Macs flawlessly, but the other two doesn't allow me access to it.
MacBook Pro Core Duo, G4 PowerMac, PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry, so much I forgot to include that I've done. I forgot some people are dumb and don't use A/C adapters or use FAT32 drives on there Macs.
I re-formatted it a long time ago using Disk Utility Mac OS X Extended Journaled on my G4 Tower (mirror drive door) with Apple Parition Map. I didn't zero it out, but it was brand new FAT32 drive from Western Digital, and nothing was on it when I reformated it to HFS.
I didn't think the problem was Intel chip related, since it doesn't work on the G4 PowerBook either. I'm unfamiliar with GUID parition map vs APL.
Can Intel Macs read off an APL external drive OK?
I'll look into Disk Warrior and see what it thinks.

  • Drive Permissions Problem

    I have several hard drives.
All of the drives and enclosing folders have been set with the following permissions ...
    owner = system
    access = read and write
    group = admin
    access = read and write
    others = read only
    - ignore ownership on this volume = unchecked
    - for some reason one of my drives is not using permissions correctly. Even know I reset all the permissions ( and copy permissions to enclosed folders) for the drive as above several times - it has the following problems ...
    - every new folder I create uses a different permissions set up from what is listed above...
    - if I tried to delete a folder on the drive - it says it will be deleted immediately - rather than putting it in the trash...
    - this is just a dated Drive - there is no system on it.
    - I ran disk utility on the drive - repair disk - but it did not help.
    * Question: How can I fix this? What is going on? I sure would hate to reformat the drive...

    Rev,
First, I'll advise you not to try to change permissions on an entire drive with the "Apply to enclosed items..." button. Hidden files on that drive should have specific permissions. Like the .Trashes folder and its sub-folders. You cannot change the permissions on a folder or file unless you own the file or you are the root user. The "Apply to enclosed items..." button will not work if you do not own the enclosed files or folders.
Firewire drive are set to "ignore permissions" when you initialize the drive (put a file system on it). Unchecking the box in the Finder's Get Info window can produce varying results. In the Terminal application, type:
    vsdbutil -c
and a space. Drag the hard drive icon on to the Terminal window. If the drive is permissions enable you should see something similar to this.
    Permissions on '/Volumes/<nameofvolume>' are enabled.
If the drive is set to ignore permissions you cannot change the owner or group of the folder or file until the ignore permissions bit is removed from the volume header. It is "legal" to have an attached drive set to "ignore permissions" or have a drive owned by a specific user other the root (system). My preference is to have every attached drive owned by root (system) with read, write, execute permissions, the group set to admin with read, write, execute permissions, and others set to read and execute. With this setup only the root user or an admin user can grant rights within the drive's file system.

  • Invalid index key - hard drive/ OS problems

After a power surge, I was unable to boot up (using 10.5.1). However, running repairing disk permissions solved this. I still have lots of issues with the hard drive itself though - mainly with files being reported as lost, incorrect reports of the hard drive being full, lag, crashes, etc. Tried Disk Utility and Fsck, neither have been able to repair the hard drive - both report an invalid index key or problems with the catalog file.
Is Disk Warrior the only solution, or would a format and clean install possibly solve the problem? At the moment I can still access my hard drive, and a back-up then clean install is a much easier (and less costly) solution for me.
    Thank you!

"Invalid index key" is a much more serious error than you're likely to actually have, since you can mount the hard disk and access files on it. If the Catalog's index key is invalid, the whole filesystem is basically trashed. It's far more likely that other components were damaged by the power surge.
In my experience, the most common components to fail this way are the logic board and/or the RAM, which means a potentially expensive trip to your local Mac repair shop.
Sometimes a computer that was damaged by a power surge behaves better if it's placed behind a line conditioner, but your mileage may vary. Most good surge protectors are also line conditioners.

  • Hard drive formatting problem

    Hi there,
I've been stupid and I'm looking for some advice.  What happened was I went and tried to install Windows 8.1 on my iMac, had a problem with the installation process and whilst in the Windows installer, I ended up screwing up a partition which has ended up as free space which OSX disk utility won't let me format, delete or repartition.  It won't work either from within Mavericks or when booted from either a recovery disk or a USB drive Mavericks installer.  I've got everything backed up so a complete hard drive format is fine, in fact I already tried that, so starting from scratch might be easiest. If anybody has any ideas how I could fix this I'd be grateful.
At the moment the drive is showing four partitions, Macintosh HD is 2.5TB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s4 is 314.6MB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s6 is 134.2MB OS Extended (Journaled) and Free Space is 499.98GB Free Space.
    Macintosh HD is working fine.
disk1s4 I'm unable to delete, merge or reformat.
disk1s6 is between a rock and a hard place, because...
Free Space is just flat out unusable.
    System is 27" iMac 3.5GHz Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 3.12TB Fusion Drive
Any help would be appreciated, I'll try not to screw up this time...
    Thanks,
    Kev

    Hi malevolus,
It looks like the partition map of your iMac’s fusion drive is corrupted. Fortunately since you have a backup of everything, we don’t have to worry about data loss. Reformatting of a fusion drive does require some special steps though. See this article -
Mac mini (Late 2012), iMac (Late 2012 and later): About Fusion Drive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446
    In Particular -
    Troubleshooting
The version of Disk Utility that comes with Fusion Drive is unique. Earlier versions of Disk Utility can't be used with a Fusion Drive.
If your system will not start because you see a flashing question mark or another alert:
Press the Power button and hold it down to power off your system.
Press the Power button again. After you hear the startup chime, press and hold Command-Option-R to start up to the Internet version of Mountain Lion Recovery.
A globe should appear with a "Starting Internet Recovery" message. It is now OK to release Command-Option-R.
A progress bar should appear and Internet Recovery should start and ask you to select a language.
Once you select a language, click Disk Utility in the window that appears and then click Continue.
If your Fusion Drive can be fixed with Disk Utility, you'll see a Disk icon with red lettering. Click the disk icon.
A dialog box appears offering to fix the Fusion Drive (shown above). Caution: Clicking Fix will erase your Fusion Drive. If you have a Time Machine backup of your Fusion Drive Mac, see Mac 101: Time Machine for information on how to restore from a Time Machine backup once the drive has been erased.
              8.  After the process is complete, the volume will change color to black. Quit Disk Utility, click Install Mac OS X, then click Continue to reinstall OS X                         Mountain Lion.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • IPod hard drive crashing problems

Sorry this is going to be long, as I want to give some background, because I would love to hear opinions about this:
I had a 6th generation 160g iPod for just over 3 years. I was on vacation using it over a long weekend a week ago. I was listening to music and decided I was going to watch a Simpsons episode that I bought from the iTunes store and was in my "tv shows" section of my iPod.
As I went to switch to the episode, the iPod froze black. I had been having issues with it randomly resetting itself or pausing during songs, so I thought it might be on its way out. - Sure enough when I did the reset it never booted back up. I tried several times. So when I got back home 2 days later and plugged it into my computer, I was not surprised that it still would not reboot.
I was bummed. 3 years is not a long time when you spend that much money. I am broke right now and since I am a music fanatic, with a huge music library I was wondering how I was going to carry on. I cannot afford to buy a new iPod.
My dear father came to my rescue and showed up at my house with a brand new 7th generation 160g iPod on Saturday evening, just as a nice jesture. - I let it sync up, went to bed. Sunday afternoon, I was taking my daughter to the park and I brought my iPod into the car. I noticed that much of the artwork was not popping up as I looked through both coverflow and sampled some songs in playlists. And when I went to try a video again... BAM, the iPod locked up and wouldn't reset, just like the old one.
I thought... maybe this is a fluke, but how strange that a brand new iPod would crash again on legally purchased iTunes video. So after trying to get it to reset, I plugged it in and again, it would not reset and my computer would not recognize it. The hard-drive just wouldn't boot up.
Then I thought... even though it wasn't plugged into my computer either time and I had used the old one for a while without syncing, maybe it was something on my computer... so I plugged it into my wife's laptop and it said "found new hardware" and then there was a new message saying something along the lines of "there is a problem with your new hardware and it cannot be installed".
My dad had gotten the 2 year warranty, but since it wasn't even 24 hours, I went to Best Buy and brought them back the iPod. They checked it out and said "wow, it's rare that out of the box it would crash, but it's crashed" and they gave me a new one. - I asked them about the possibility of something corrupting it, but they said it was unlikely and they since it's a hard-drive, hard-drives crash.
So on Sunday evening, I did the same routine, I synced my iPod. This time, I tried a little bit of music and a little bit of video without syncing my library and it worked... Then that night I let the whole thing sync.
This morning (Monday) I took it to work and played some music while I dropped my daughter off, and all of a sudden all the artwork is gone again... I figured I deal with that later, because although it bothered me, at least it was playing song after song with no issue.
I'm at work now and I was letting a playlist play on shuffle. It was working just find and was so happy to have an iPod back.
Then I hit the menu button and it takes me back to "coverflow" (the last place I was browsing) and all of a sudden the sound starts buzzing and the whole thing locks up. It's stuck, so I go to reset it...
And low & behold, it won't reset, like the hard-drive crashed AGAIN. This is the 3rd iPod in a row. I plugged it into my work computer, just to see if it would recognize it. (I downloaded the latest iTunes on there) It won't. Again it just won't reboot.
Now the first one, I was having hard-drive troubles, and hadn't been synced in a while, so unfortunately I think the product just doesn't last very long.
But now with 2 new ones, it's making me think that there could be a problem with something in my computer. But I can't imagine what. Everything is either ripped directly into iTunes from a CD, bought from the iTunes store or were WAV files I put into iTunes and converted to aac files. I am a musicians and don't believe in illegally downloading music and don't use torrents. I can't imagine what could corrupt anything I'm syncing.
I have about 110g of music that I am trying to sync. And then some tv shows, which I don't always sync all of them. Most of them were purchased from iTunes, but I have a few that I took from DVD and converted and put into my iTunes.
I have called the apple help line, but they want me to call them back when I'm at my computer at home and we can trouble shoot, even though I know they won't be able to help me, because my iPod won't be able to be read.
I would love to get some opinions and help.
    Thank you,
    Paul.

Okay, by looking at my previous posting in this forum, it has apparently only been 2 1/2 years since I got my last iPod.

  • Hard Drive Logon problems A20M

I have a bit of a problem I hope I can resolve with your help.
A friend of mine asked me to correct a few problems he was having with his A20M.  One of the problems was his ability to connect to the internet.  His laptop was had been set up to logon with a domain.  I took the laptop home and while troubleshooting a couple of the problems, needed to connect to the internet through my own home network.  To do that, I had to change the setting so it would connect through my network workgroup.  After setting it up, I had to reboot the laptop, and in doing so, when I tried to logon to the hard drive, I received an error message indication I needed to make sure the user name, pass word and domain were entered correctly before I could logon.
Prior to making the changes so I could use the laptop on my home network, ... during the logon process, the logon window that would open contained three entried (User/owners name, password, and domain name).  The users and domain names were already filled in, and the logon only required the entry of the correct password (which I have).
After making the changes, ... during the logon process, the logon window that opened contained only two entried (User/owners name and password).  The users name was already filled in, and the logon only required the entry of the correct password.  The box for entering a Domain name was not present any more.
Now, since the laptop is giving me the error message about needing to make sure a domain name is correct (and I'm not able to make a change to the domain), I've basically not able to logon to the computer any more.
I've checked the BIOS and it show that all three areas that can be password protected have the password feature disabled.  I'm at a loss trying to figure out what steps to take to gain access to the laptop again.  I sure hope someone will be able to get me pointed in the right direction.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer any input with my problem.

    Hey Brandon.
There are no screw extractors in that size
Well actually there are but they are a special item like from camera/jeweler repair suppliers.
I thought one solution might be to buy an extra screw and try to scrape all the plastic out from under the screw and then just buy an extra top cover on ebay. Is there any other way to do this?
I don't think I'd go scraping around in there. That's a very small Phillips head screw and that's probably why it got stripped. I've done an extraction like this by fitting a jewelers straight slot screwdriver in there. (I've got 10 different sizes) It can help to cut a slot a with the backside of an Exacto knife or use a very fine Dremel wheel or Swedish file.
