Hard Drive problem - lost all my music help?

Hey,
I recently got a hard drive so i decided to move all my music from my laptop to it. This included iTunes and everything. Everything was working fine - I imported my music and it was playing etc. But, I decided to defragment my Hard drive and this seems to have included my music collection. When I go to the file to import instead of the iTunes icon there is the - "which file would you like to view it with" icon. Then, when I use the iTunes icon it doesn't work. The folder still is the 39GB size it was when my music was there. So that means it's still somewhere right? Does anyone know how I can restore my files again? I have over 10,000 songs that I have been collecting for over 6 years. And help at all would be greatfully appreciated. Thanks.

Jarrod, Redcube is correct that it's store policy about downloading once & it's the user's responsibility to backup important files. Now, to give you a little hope, the store has been known to grant a one time re-download to folks with special circumstances. You will need to pick the appropriate link to e-mail the store, politely explain what has happened, & ask for a re-download. Keep in mind that if you are fortunate enough to be granted a re-download, to get your new library backed up because if something should happen, again, I'm afraid you will be out of luck. Also, keep in mind that the store is not required to grant you a re-download. Hope this helps.

  • Had to wipe my hard drive and lost my purchases. Help?

I know how to get purchases off my ipod and on to my new itunes but I have one little problem that I hadn't anticipated. The day I had my hard drive wiped I bought some music and hadn't yet had the chance to put it on my ipod. Is there some way I can get these purchases back or do I have to beg the 'rents for more money to re-purchase the songs?

The iTS terms of purchase allow you one download. It is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
With that said, the iTS has been known to allow a second d/l under certain circumstances. You can contact the iTS web based customer service via this page and plead your case if you want - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/

  • External Hard drive crash - lost all music

The external hard drive where I store all of my iTunes music crashed today and the only other copy of it is on my iPod. Is there any way I can set up my iPod to transfer the music back to my hard drive without losing it? My iPod is set to sync automatically and I'm afraid it will erase everything if I hook it up to my computer. I've poured over the help topics on the Apple site, but nothing addresses my particular problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

*Is there any way I can set up my iPod to transfer the music back to my hard drive without losing it? My iPod is set to sync automatically and I'm afraid it will erase everything if I hook it up to my computer.*
If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • HT203167 I had a hard drive crash & lost all of my music. Most of it came from ripping my CDs, which I can do again. I'd like to clear my iTunes library without emptying my iPod too. Can I do this?

When I tried to remove the existing library so I could start ripping again, I got a message that said that all of the library entries I delete will be removed from my iPod next time I sync.  I do NOT want to do that.  It will take me some time to rip all of my CDs again, and I don't want to have an empty iPod in the meantime.
Is there a way to clear my iTunes library of all of the invalid songs (which is most of them) and not have them deleted from my player?
Thanks - any help is appreciated.  Hard drive crashes are awful.

Unfortunately I do not.  I had all of my music on this external drive that crashed.  I have a replacement drive now but the re-ripping process will be slow to come.  I just basically wanted to start with a `clean slate' in iTunes without emptying the contents of my iPod.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Can I use my external hard drive to keep all my music for itunes?

I am trying to clean up my itunes and computer. Once I figure out how to get rid of all of my duplicate songs I want to keep my entire music library on my external hard drive so my computer has free memory. Is there a way to set this up? Im a novice and its very frustrating not knowing how to do this!
    THANK YOU!!!!

Consolidate it from the Library section of the File menu, drag the entire iTunes folder to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it there.

  • My external hard drive which contained all mu music has failed.  How do i create a new itunes library with the music on my iphone?

I had all my music on an external hard drive which itunes referred to as the stored location.   this drive has now died and I only have the music on my iphone/ipad.  How do I recreate my music on another external drive using the music on my iphone/ipad?

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy?
If so, not good, you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You may be able to purchase a third party program to get the rest ( not supported by Apple).

  • My hard drive failed, lost all my software for CS6. How can I get it back?

Last year I purchsed CS6 in the form of CDs from the University of California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo.
I installed them on my MacBook Pro.
I transferred colleges to the University of Wisconsin Stout.
Last week my hard drive corrupted and I lost all my Creative Suite software.
I doubt that I have my product code or CDs anymore (just lost in the travel).
Is there a way I that I can be given a download from Adobe to get my software back?
I've already paid for it once, and even with my student discount it was not cheap!

  • What are the consequenses if I use my iPod Touch 4th generation as hard drive?  Will all my music still be on there if I choose to set it completely to hard-drive or not?

I've noticed that you can partially or completely use an iPod touch 4th gen. as an external disc/hard-drive.  Since I don't want to risk losing all my music, photo's, videos and whatnot, I was wondering if they would still be on there if I were to set the device to it's complete capacity as a hard-drive?  And if so, wether I could acces and alter this content from within finder?

The iPod Touch does not support "disk mode" as other iPods did.  However, as you are already aware, there are other ways to make this possible, but you can try them at your own risk.

  • Upgraded ops and hard drive and lost all my folders in thunderbird. How do I retrieve them?

I was using windows xp and my computer was hacked so I had to get a new hard drive and I also upgraded to windows 7. After installing thunderbird I noticed that all of my folders were missing. I had folders specifically for emails from my bank, certain cites that included my passwords for those accounts, utility payment records and on and on. Now I can't even find where to make a personal folder for all of my new e-mails that I need to keep. I really want to retrieve my old folders and incorporate them into my thunderbird that I currently have downloaded on this new system.

Your folders are on your old hard drive is my guess.Did you copy any of your data over when you got the new drive?

  • I had a new hard drive and lost all my website info

    HI
I have just had a new HD as my computer just had a spaz attack. I thought I had everything backed up but I am not sure if I have done my iWeb properly as I can't get the info. i have all my website published to a folder and I thought that this was how to keep it sfae but now on my new HD I open iweb and I don't know how to put it all back, if at all possible. It must all be somewhere and I have published to Mac. PPlease help me before I start redoing it.

Yes, it does. But if that folder to which you published is still available, then some of the resources (such as images and text-images) can be dragged & dropped to your second-attempt iWeb site.
Meanwhile, consider regularly backing up via the free "SuperDuper!". It can create a bootable clone from which you can temporarily boot after which you can try to fix your internal HD via Disk Utility. Plus you can recover individual files (such as iWeb's Domain) from that bootable clone.

  • The hard drive on my laptop died, so i have lost all my music. It is saved on my iphone, is there any way to transfer it across onto my new laptop? Or does itunes keep a record of my purchases?

The hard drive on my laptop died, so i have lost all my music. It is saved on my iphone, is there any way to transfer it across onto my new laptop? Or does itunes keep a record of my purchases?

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • TS2776 Had to get a new hard drive, of course lost all my music in itunes. If I sync my ipod to itunes will I lose my music on my ipod??

Had to get a new hard drive, of course lost all my music in itunes.  If I sync my ipod to itunes now will I lose my music on my ipod?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software to copy over.  A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all my music (Cds that I had downloaded into itunes) except the once I had purchased from the itunes store. Can anyone help? Do you know what might have happened?

After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all the music that I had downloaded from my Cds. It was a lot of music! All I still have is the music that I had purchased in the itunes store. And before you asked. No, I did not have a backup. Never got around to do it.
Does anyone of you have an idea if and how I can maybe get my music back?
Your help is very much appreciated. Would it help if I recover my computer from an earlier date?? I am not even sure if I make sense here.

Hi - I seem to have a similar problem. I was prompted to update to iPhoto 11 yesterday (don't know why yesterday, I'm in iPhoto all the time). So I followed the instructions, library updated, all existing events and albums are there. I uploaded some more pictures and created a few new albums and did some new year spring cleaning, moving stuff around etc. And I started making a calendar.
I've opened it up today, my calendar is still there as are all the new events, but the pictures are empty outlines. If I open up a picture I just get the "!" but I can still see the thumbnails showing in the slider in the bottom - I don't know if that means the source files must still be there somewhere, or if it just means it captured thumbnails yesterday.
I've gone into it via "show package contents" and there just don't seem to be any masters for an upload yesterday. I also just had a look in the last import folder, because of a comment from someone above. As I scrolled down through the folder the images were there and literally disappeared in front of me - by which I mean, the thumbnails were there as I scrolled down and then would turn into empty outlines...!
All my old folders are still there, thankfully (although they're of course the ones that are also all safely back up).
Although I have a timecapsule, my photo library is too big to keep on my hard drive, so I keep it on an external drive - so it only gets backed up when I do it manually (thanks Apple for that, I will never understand why it was designed to work - or not work - that way). So if the pictures have been lost then they are gone for good which is super-frustrating (I just got back from South Korea and was in the middle of sorting out all my shots from that trip).  It seems that this can only have happened because of the update - I should have known better than to have pressed yes.
If you have any ideas, I'd be most grateful!
    Regards
    R
