Hard Drive Question, how to transfer files etc.??

I hope I'm posting in the correct forum. In the past, I've had issues related to a nearly filled to capacity hard drive. I finally got aroung to getting a hard drive ( external ) for my 2 macs ( my laptop arrived from the seller with its startup disc nearly full, still not quite sure what that means or how that happened..) I have a G4 powermac and a macbook. I was told my new porsche lacie 350 GB hard drive could be used with both machines.I have partitioned my hard drive into 3- don't quite know why I picked three, but since it can go up to eight, I figured and extra partition might be useful- My problem is this; I figured that with contemporary hard drives the software would automatically back-up your info, but I can't seem to manage this. Is it normal to have drag and drop all your applications and files onto your storage device? Even on a brand-new hard drive? Many thanks in advance.

If you have Lacie it should have came with a disc that has a utility on it for backups. If not its downloadable from Lacie.
Second if you have .Mac membership you can download Backup and this is also a utility for backing up.
Lastly, SuperDuper is a good backup utility that a lot of people use.
Anyone of these three with work.
There was at one time a program called iBackup that was being developed. You might want to hunt for it on the internet. If I remember right it was a pretty good freeware program.

  • Can't create new folder on an external hard drive, and how to transfer files?

    Hello everyone,
the non-English speaking videographer I translate for is having problems operating his Premiere CS5 for Mac from an external hard drive. He cannot create new folder on the external hard drive (the "New Folder" button is grayed-out when tries to export media onto the external hard drive) and when he simply tries to create new folder, the "new folder" option isn't available.
He suspects it's because the hard drive was formatted for PC.
    Questions:
    - should PC-formatting cause that problem?
    - what's the proper way to transfer media files from PC-formatted external hard drive to the internal hard drive on Mac?
    Would appreciate your advice.
    Dimitri Vorontzov

He is right on the money
Now, for the sad or FAT part. You need to format the drive as FAT32 to make it work both on PC and MAC but, and that is a big BUT, the max file size of any given file will be 4GB. I haven't treid other formats yet, like the journaled MAC OS extended, but I don't think that would work. We transfer our files through or own gigabit network so I never had to try it, other than FAT32 formatted SDHC cards.

  • Upgrading Hard Drive, best way to transfer files etc?

    I have a 13" MacBook (White) Intel Core 2 Duo 2Ghz w/ 4G Ram and a 80G HD.
I want to replace the HD (with maybe 320G). What's the best way to seamlessly transfer all my files, setting, applications etc. as easily as possible.
I have Retrospect; can I just duplicate the entire HD to the new drive (by putting it in an external enclosure first) and then take the drive out of the enclosure and drop it in to the computer. Will all the OS settings, preferences transfer properly?
I'm trying to avoid having to manually mover over a lot of settings, or reinstall printer drivers etc if possible!
Thanks for any help or suggestions

I'm not familiar with Retrospect. Does it make a bootable clone? Can you attach your backup to your MacBook and use it as the startup disk? If so, make the backup onto the new drive and test it. Then put it into your MacBook using [These Instructions|http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbook13_mem_hdm>. (The video shows RAM and HD installation) If you're careful and follow the steps, you won't hurt your MacBook. If you don't feel confident with the procedure, get outside help.
If the Retrospect backup is not bootable, better use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner instead.

No you cannot, it doesn't allow that level of customization.

  • Lost my hard drive. How to transfer from IPOD to MacBook -OR!- Match?

I lost my entire harddrive on my W7 PC.  I have most (but not all) of my music on my iPod.  I just purchased a MacBook Pro, and iPhone 5, and subscribed to iTunes Match.  QUESTION: How can I transfer all the songs on my iPod, from the ipod up into iTunes Match?  In order to get those songs on ITunes in the new MacBook.  Or is there a better way?  Perhaps it is better to try and rip the songs off the iPod into iTunes and then up to iTunes Match??
(Point of note - not all of these songs that I lost were from CD's, or from iTunes purchases.  Yes, many of them came from YouTube.  I mention it so as to save any misdirection people might offer as a solution)  Thank You!

You can use MobiKin Assistant for iOS to transfer data or files from iPod to computer directly. It is an excellent software and can sync data from iOS device to computer easily. These data including text messages, contacts, music, photos, video, tv shows, voice memos, podcasts, ringtones, books, etc. Beside, it can support almost all iOS devices, including the latest iPhone 6 plus/6, iPhone 5s/5/4s/4, iPad air/mini, iPod, etc. High compatibility make it become the one of most professional iOS tools. You can have a free try. Believe it can help you a lots.

  • I can not transfer files and data from macbook pro to my external hard drive, i can not transfer files and data from macbook pro to my external hard drive , so what should i do ?

i have an external hard disk but whenever i tried to transfer any file or data from macbook to this ext.disk its failed before that i used to have another hard drive with same problem ,then i thought may  be this hard drive is not support mac then i bought a new one which supports mac but still i have same problem what should i do ?

    Ok.
Go into Disk Utility, and make sure you select your external hard drive.
There should be 4 tabs, one being erase. I have taken a screenshot to show you what it should be set to (obviously name it what you like), and set the format to Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) as per the example below & after double checking your in the right drive, you can hit erase. And you're done! *hopefully*

  • How to transfer photos from iPhoto to external hard drive?, How to transfer photos from iPhoto to external hard drive?

    Hello folks
My start up disk is full and I've been advised to delete some items
from my computer. I have too much pix/videos. How do I transfer them
from iphoto to an external HD?
    Thanks

just move your iPhoto library to the extrnal drive being sure it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • I have all my music on an external hard drive. I just transferred all my files to a new hard drive . How do I sync all my files with my itunes library without losing all my playlists etc and keep everything intact?

I have all my music on an external hard drive. I just transferred all my files to a new hard drive . How do I sync all my files with my itunes library without losing all my playlists etc and keep everything intact?

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

  • How to transfer files(pdfs/music.etc)between two pcs

how to transfer files(pdfs/music.etc)between two pcs?

Yes, you pretty much just drag and drop or copy and paste depending on which way you like better. It is pretty much like connecting an external hard drive. Just find the files you want and copy them over to your other computer.
This is one of my favorite features from Macs. It's very simple to do and because it's Firewire even large files transfer over very quickly.

  • How do i transfer a single CD on to my back up hard drive without having to transfer the whole itunes library?

How do I transfer a single CD recently loaded on to itunes to my hard drive without having to transfer the whole itunes library?

Copy just those files. But that isn't ideal. You really want a differential system that efficiently updates the backup set with all new and updated files.  See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a suggested strategy.

I will then download and install a new version of itunes on my new computer.
My question is this. When I do this, will itunes have all my album artwork for all my library? My library has a lot of my own music and I have spent quite a bit of time copying album artwork that itunes did not add. I am really hoping I don't have to do this again!

  • How to transfer files to external hardrive to free up space on my internal drive

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES TO MY EXTERNAL HARD DRVE TO FREE UP SPACE ON MY INTERNAL HARD DRIVE

Depends on the file type. Most files - documents you have created, like MSWor files - you can drag and drop.
You should not do that with Applications.
Here's how to move iTunes and iPhoto libraries:

Moving Applications is more complex. Post back if you want to do that.
Do not forget to trash the originals on the internal drive, and then EMPTY the trash.

    Either of these should help.

Or search 'disk size' in the App Store.
Be carefull with what you delete & have a backup BEFORE you start, you may also want to reboot to try to free any memory that may have been written to disk.
