Hard drive read/write question

Hi,
I purchased this mac pro(2008) with the stock seagate 320gb hard drive (model ST3320820AS_P) and I am interested to know what kind of read write numbers to expect from this drive.
I am having a tough time trying to find any numbers that aren't in reference to RAID setups, and became concerned that this drive might be working at peak performance due to firmware issues others are talking about.
(tangent - I would like to add more drives, but am on the fence for WD or seagate)

750GB WD SE16 $168 is hard to beat.
I saw some systems came with WD 320GB. Guess Apple is using both for now.

  • G710 hard drive read/write speed

    Hello,
    I have a brand new Ideapad G710  with 1TB Serial ATA 2, 5400rpm with advertised speed of 3 Gb/s (= 384MB/s).
    I am running Windows 7 ultimate x64 with SP1.
When I test hard drive read/write speed (I used CrystalDiskMark) I get results of about 100MB/s, which is 3-4 times slower than it should be.
I am not running any resource heavy applications (Resource monitor reports Disk I/O to be 0 most of the time in idle state). I have 3 partitions, each with 16-32GB paging file size and all are >90% empty. All partitions have been defragmented before testing.
Is this normal? Are there any lenovo drivers or utilities than I might be missing or that can slow/speed this?
    Solved!

    hi Daew,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
The results that you got while running CrystalDiskMark is normal. The SATA 2 (3Gb/s) that you mentioned is actually the SATA interface support, not the actual read/write performance.
If you have a Seagate HDD (eg. ST10000LM024), check these specs
From the above specs, the unit has a cache that has a read/write max speed of 145 MB/s but there are environmental factors and power requirements to get this speed (eg. read/write speed on AC power is differente from battery power).
AFAIK, if this is the specs that is design for this drive, there's no way to speed it up.
If you're planning to upgrade in the future though, you can get an SSD for faster read/write.

  • Make external hard drive read/write

Not quite sure if there is in the right section but oh well.
    Here's the story:
SeaGate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive (1.5TB) (THE FOLLOWING INFO WAS TAKEN FROM ITS APPLICATION: ("SEAGATE DRIVE SETTINGS")
    Drive Info
    Model: FA GoFlex Desk
    Firmware: 0D19
    Volume Info
    Format: Windows NT Filesystem
    Capacity: 1397.26 GB
    Available: 1224.35 GB
    Used: 172.91 GB
    Mount point: /Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive
So it seems to slow down my iMac (10.6.8), 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.5GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (memory) (1st Generation 17 inch) a fair bit. Could this be because of the Format? I have no idea why it says that. When I first installed it, it asked what OS I'm going to use it for. Not quite sure if I chose both or just Mac. But those files have somehow dissappeared.
Now in Disk Utility...the RAID tab, Format says it is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but then in the Erase tab it says Format: Windows NT Filesystem
Which format is it set to!?!?!?!?!?!?!
    Now to the main point:
I also have a new 13" MacBook Pro. When I plug it into it, I only have Read Permissions. How do I make it have Write Permissions as well?
Sorry for the long essay...I hope you can help me. I might have two problems here.
    1. Is the format correctly set up for my iMac?
    2. How do I set it to have Read/Write permissions on different computers?
    Thanks.

The Format is incorrect for Mac use, as you guessed.  Go into Disk Utility again, highlight the external har drive in the left hamd column by clicking on it and select the "Erase" tab, up and over to the right.  Then select the Format below that will be installed as "Mac OS Extended (Journeled)".  THEN, OK the erasure.  That should clear things up.
Note: your Windows PC will NO LONGER be able to read the external hard drive.  It will be formatted for OS X use.
    Hope this helps

  • [SOLVED] Log hard drive read/writes

Is it possible to monitor everytime a file on the hard drive is read from or written to and to add that information to a log?
Last edited by Chris Denton (2010-07-25 10:32:57)

Thanks. That seems to be working quite well.
One problem though, I notice I have to exclude /dev (otherwise it seems to get stuck in a loop like fukawi2 mentioned). This does raise a question though, I notice that it isn't actually accessing the physical disk when this happens, so I wonder, is there a way to tell it to only include events that occur on the disk?

  • Hard drive read/write problems

I have three external hard drives connected to my iMac that are always on with the computer. Just recently, I started having trouble with permissions. Every day I have to go into disk utility and click "verify disk" to be able to write to the drive, if I don't do that then I can only read the drive. It's the same with all three of them! This just started a couple of weeks ago. What is wrong?
Oh! My recollection recalls that a couple of weeks ago upon starting the iMac one morning, one of my hard drive's name, as well as a .iso file that I have on my desktop, were totally wacko. Full of numbers and characters, etc. I'm wondering if my HD problem is caused from this?
    I desperately need some help!

if running "verify disk" helps at all it's definitely not a permissions problem. it's a file system problem. when system detects a serious file system problem when mounting an external drive it will mount it as a read only file system. run "repair disk", not "verify disk" using disk utility on all the drives involved. see if that helps. and are there any errors when you run it?

  • Hard drive read write speeds are too slow

I was having an issue with 17inch macbook pro. was getting 4.0mb/s read write speed tops. and smart status failure.
So i replaced the drive. The new drive is a 7200 RPM 500GB WD drive. I'm getting 12.0mb/s on top speed. Computer feels a little quicker but still slow overall.
I ran this test on a fresh install of snow leopard.
Is it just me or do those read/write speeds on the new drive still seem slow?

That does seem slow - on the other hand, what are you using to measure it?

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

Is there any way to store the back up to Mac and restore after formating?

  • New Hard Drive still have Question Mark Folder

So I first got the 'Question Mark Folder' and had to keep running Safe Boot Mode to use computer. Finally got around to replacing the Hard Drive, but this Question Mark Folder still comes up trying to turn the computer on and now trying to setup the new hard drive. Won't let me do anything. I've tried all of the button combos/recovery mode/etc. Tried inserting both a backup disk of Mavericks and Snow Leopard, nothing. Is there any other problems that could cause this? Maybe a dead SATA cable? or something else small hopefully?

My newest Mac just did the same "folder of death" dance. It's too late for you now, but you might consider a passport backup drive. You can get 2&3 T-bytes now fairly reasonably priced. A given with computers is they will crash, just a question of how bad and when, so you can be prepared for the next time.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • How do I use migration assistance with hard drive reader for dead macbook

    Hi,
My old mac laptop died without warning.
I took it to the apple store and they suggested getting a hard drive reader and using that to transfer
    across my files.
I've connected it up and have requested the migration assistant to transfer the files. Last night it
said it would 27 hours to transfer and now this morning it is saying 72 hours. This seems to
be a very long time - is it correct? Can I make it go faster or is there another way?
I've got a bit of music on there but nothing excessive. I do have about 15,000 photos though.
I'm not very techy so any assistance would be very helpful
    Thanks
    Sarah

Hi, that's far to long, unless maybe it's USB1.1 speed.
If USB2 or Firewire, I'd start ober & try Disk utility>Repair Disk on the external drive.

Hi, my ipad 2 just got the same problem and after reading all relative post, finnally i figrue it out, that is no software issue at alll just hardware,
I did attemp replace the power button cable on my ipad so i must disconnect the back camera cable so there is my problem. Because the connect some how not exact in place, i took the camera out and the issue is gone. So, in your case, if you did try to replace anything look at them again or you just take them out one by one and reboot ipad until it work.
    Hope this help

  • Why is external hard drive read-only on one Mac, but read/write on another?

I have a Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive.  I bought it to be compatible with both Windows and Mac, which it currently is.  It works just fine on my PC and my MacBook.  However, recently, I bought a MacBook Pro.  The Seagate drive shows up as read only on the MacBook Pro, though it is read/write on my MacBook.  It's formatted NTFS, yes, but it already works on my MacBook.  What's going on here?

Nope, one of the selling points of the drive was that it came ready to work with both Mac and Windows (the product description says there is an NTFS drive installed for use on Mac).  No hacking or installing on my part.
But I think I figured it out.  Apparentely, Mavericks comes installed with something that does not allow it to write NTFS no matter what (well, unless you go through a whole bunch of technical stuff to rewrite the software).  My old MacBook was Leopard.
I'll just reformat the external hard drive for Mac, and if I ever need to use it on a Windows, I'll install HFS+ Explorer on the Windows.  Oh well.

  • Can only read external hard drive, not write to

    Hi
I have a Mac Book Pro and a 60GB external Hard Drive which I use to transfer files between my Win PC (!!) and my Mac. transferring files from PC to Mac is fine using the HDD but when I try to copy files from my Mac to the HDD it says I cannot write to the drive as it is read only. How do i make it writable as well as readable. Its formatted as Windows NT Filesystem if that helps.

    mp_photo wrote:

    Hi,
    that is the culprit.
Mac OSX is only capable of reading from NTFS drives but can not write to them.
    Possible solutions:
Reformat the external drive to FAT32 (using Disk Utility and 'MS-DOS'),
but be aware of the the size limit of 4GB for a single file
    use MacFuse: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
Caution: reformatting the drive will delete all files on it, so make a backup before.

  • Usb hard drive - slow write speed

Hey all you mac savvy people out in mac land.
I got the airport extreme n edition for christmas and I set the thing up at the 5Ghz N speed (300Mbps) and all is happy. then I connected my external usb 2.0 hard drive to begin using that as a network storage, the airport picks it up and sees it, and I can read/write to it. When I read from it, it reads really fast at about 6 MBps (i can see this speed by using the iStat widget) but the write speed to it is about 2 MBps (again, through iStat). I know that the hard drive itself is not slow because hard wired to it is really fast and i know that the airport extreme is fast for transfers because i transfer about 12-13 MBps to my pc. Why is it that the write speed going wireless to it is slow? any ideas?
