Hard drive recognized in mac but not in windows

Hi, I have an external hard drive which I loaded up from my Mac originally and has only been used in my Mac since.
Today, I plugged it into a Windows computer and it would not show up in My Computer...
does anyone know why my external hard drive is recognized just fine on my Mac, but doesn't show up in the Windows computer?
If it has to do with naming my hard drive, how do I do it correctly on the Mac?

That's really a question you should be asking Microsoft, however it may have to do with the way the EHD is formatted. Is it formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or is it formatted another way. You can check this by right clicking the EHD, and selecting Information. Of you can select the EHD in Finder and type Command I.

WD 1TB external hard drive recognized by Mac, but Finder can't open it

Recently my Western Digital 1TB external HD is giving me problems... First it would read but wouldn't let me write and asked me to reformat, so I did a reformat (to NTFS) and at the beginning it seemed fine.... All of a sudden this morning when I try to backup something from my Air (FYI: tried on my 15" MBP as well same following result), Finder wouldn't open the external HD, and by clicking on the external HD it made Finder freeze. Trying to relaunch Finder did not make Finder work. Force eject did not work. Tried to use Disk Utility to reformat again, it made DU freeze after clicking on the volume...
Anyone any idea what is wrong with my external HD? I don't really care about the data on there, so how do I reformat it?

EDIT: Tried the WD Quick Formatter, it froze at the "Dismounting Volumes" stage.

There may or may not be a physical fault with the WD drive, but Macs can read but not write to NTFS disks unless you use a third party driver like Paragon NTFS for Mac, or NTFSMounter.
Your post seems to imply that before the current problems it used to be OK (ie you could read and write to it). Have you got NTFS for Mac or similar?
Did you have a reson for formatting NTFS? Mac drives are formatted HFS+. If you want Windows to read Mac disks you can install MacDrive in Windows, and Paragon HFS for Windows.

USB FLASH DRIVE WORKS ON MAC BUT NOT ON WINDOWS... CAUSE I ERASED IT IN MAC

I decided to take my work flash drive home to work on a file. At home I saw that some weird files were on the flash drive and wouldn't delete, so I decided to save my files on my Mac and erase the USB flash drive. I selected the flash drive (by the way it's a 2 GB flashdrive) and I used the SECURITY OPTION 35 PASS ERRASE. Format: MS-DOS (FAT).
Everything was fine until I took my flash drive to work and plugged it on a Windows XP Computer and it appeared as Drive E I think and when I tried to open it it asked me to format it. I risked it and clicked OK and it said that I didn't have sufficient rights or something.
SUMMERY:
2 GB USB ERASED USING MAC DISSK UTILITY
EVERYTHING FINE UNTIL I PLUG IN THE FLASH DRIVE IN A WINDOWS
WINDOWS ASKS ME TO REFORMAT FILE

The drive is probably now formatted for a Mac only file system. To format for a PC:
Insert the drive in the Mac and start Disk Utility (Utilities folder).
Select the drive in the left column. Be sure to select the drive (all the way to the left) not a volume (indented below the drive name).
Select the "Partition" tab.
Set "Volume Scheme" to "1 Partition" (not "Current" even if it's already one partition).
Click the "Options" button".
Select "Master Boot Record".
Click the "OK" button.
Enter a volume name (all uppercase).
Set "Format" to "MS-DOS (FAT)".
Click the "Apply" button.

I finally got a representative that was able to help me, she had me go to Get Info, by right clicking iMovie from the finder, and I had to click on Sharing & Permissions>Everyone>Read & Write

My external hard drive appears in bootcamp but not on my mac partition

This is intriguing. I own a macbook pro and run osx 10.6.8
I recently bought a new 1 tb hard drive and partitioned it. (300G for time machine and another for 700G for random things). It was working fine until I tried logging onto my bootcamp partition. I couldn't edit any files (due to the format of the drive), so I decided to relog back onto my mac parititon. Now the disk is grayed out in disk utility, under a different name and a different format type. I can read the files on my windows partition, but I cannot even access the drive on my mac partition. This drive is rather big, and I have no idea how I would even begin bcking it up... ( i don't have any other drives this large..)
Any ideas?

External hard drives work on tiger but not on leopard. WHY?

My 2 external hard drives worked fine on tiger. I had the backup program and used it every week. Now that I loaded up leopard, I cant see the external hard drives. When I take the drives and plug them to my mac book pro which I have not yet upgraded, they come up fine.
I cant even see them in disk utility

My external doesn't work either. It seems like it is trying to boot, but doesn't. Meanwhile, the Mac Pro churns and the fan goes into high gear. At that time the screen freezes and the little rainbow wheel just spins. The only way I could get the Mac back was to power down with the power button on the front of the CPU and unplug the external drive. It's just a backup drive but I would like access to it. I'm looking to see if the manufacturer has a patch online, but I'd appreciate any suggestions ion the meantime. I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet on my MacBook Pro, maybe I'll wait a few days... Anyone know what to do?

External Hard Drive Recognized on Mac and PC

Still in context to my other posting (Weekly Broadcast), I was wondering if anyone had any experience with formatting an External Hard Drive in Mac and still allow a PC to see it? I need to export a DV file from Final Cut Pro (which is 5.6 GB large) and save it to an external hard drive, connect that to a Television stations PC and put that file on their server. Any suggestions? And thanks for everyone's help in the past.

This can happen but in my experience it needs to be over a network.
If you use a MS-DOS formatted drive- which the mac can read and write to directly - you bump up against the 2gb file size limit. Windows NTFS drives do not have this limit but, Macs can not write to them if directly connected.
So, my solution has been to hang the NTFS drive off of a Windows machine, share it, and through the network, copy the file from a Mac to the drive.
I hope others have a more elegant solution for you.

New hard drive and OSX install but not linked to my Apple ID

My hard drive died on my MacBook Pro (2012) and so I had a new one put in. Before this they managed to save a back up of all my folders, files, pictures etc. They then re installed my OSX software (not my original as that was Lion, I think this one is Mountain Lion - it's version 10.8), and started up my computer to put my 'back up' of my folders etc onto the computer before returning it to me. However, by starting up the computer and going through the welcome section, they have logged in without my Apple ID and so my computer is not synced to that apple account. This computer is now not registered with my apple account. This means, my iLife is gone (iPhoto etc). How can I restart and have the computer linked with my Apple account. I need to be able to sync up to access my iLife, my previous purchases such as Pages, and sync my iPhone with the computer again.
How can I fix this?

'They" are Apple technicians or an AASP tech? I had a similar situation where Mt. Lion was installed on my MBP, by a genius bar technician, which originally came with Lion. The solution was to reinstall Lion. Then to install Mt. Lion, I had to get a redemption code from Apple and then install it. This then connected my ID with Mt. Lion.
If you have purchased Mt. Lion, it should still be in your App store account. If you have not purchased it, consider installing Mavericks instead (it is free).
I suggest that you start the MBP with the OPTION-COMMAND-R keys down. The display will show a revolving globe and proceed with the installation. This connects with the Apple servers and installs the original OSX. You will need a solid Internet connection.

Can't see shard hard drive on my mac, but can on both my pcs.

I just bought and hooked up my airport extreme. After having my room mate switch out his old networking devices and getting frustrated with trying to set it all up, I finished the job. I have the printer hooked up and can print from the 3 computers in the house. We wanted to hook up a shared hard drive so we can share work related materials. We plugged in the hard drive and both his pc and laptop can see and use it, but I can't find it anywhere.
What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to where I can put my files on the hard drive also?

I used OS X Mountain Lion and Windows 7. I bought an External Hard Drive Several Years Ago. I can't import files on it, just read it. In Windows i can read and write it. I want to upgrade my OS X Mountain Lion to OS X Mavericks. I am afraid that i will lose all of my files. Please help

That is because the external drive you are using is formatted in the Windows NTFS format, which is fine for Windows.
OS X can READ files from that format but can NOT Write to that format. If you want to use that external drive with both Windows and Mac OS X you will need to reformat it in a format that both Windows and OS X can Read from and Write to.
Those would be FAT32, in OSX it is called MS-DOS (FAT), or exFAT. You do that formatting in either OS X Disk Utility or Windows Disk Management.

Airtunes streaming skips in iTunes 10 Mac but not iTunes windows

I have had problems with airtunes for a fair while now, definately the whole time i've had itunes 10, but recently noticed that using the same computer (MBP booted to Windows 7 using iTunes Windows) it streams perfectly. So now I'm really confused. Help!
Problem:
Here is the problem. Mac iTunes 10, play music streaming to me Airport express, will start to play then stop, pause, start, pause, play.... aarrrggg. Doesn't matter which song.
Environment:
I have Airport Extreme connected to Linksys modem. Wireless g/n network connecting to Airport express which is hard wired to stereo. Wireless network is perfect except for this airtunes issue, and support various mobile devices plus n and g apple notebooks. My main computer is Macbook Pro with dual boot windows 7 and mac snow leopard. I've recently found that itunes only behaves badly in Mac mode!
Diagnosis:
Have tried switching wireless channel from 1, 7, 11 etc to remove interferrence - but identified that this does not remove the issue.
Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes windows on same computer and works FINE
Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes on iPhone 3GS with iOS5 and works about 50% (skipping, but not as bad as from mac, but unacceptable quality)
Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes on Macbook Pro with snow leopard and iTunes 10 and basically skips constantly

. mov files playing fine on a Mac, but not on Windows with Quicktime 7.2

I have a few .mov clips that were created in Final Cut Pro and that I need to use on a Windows PC. They are playing fine in Quicktime 7.2 on my MacBook, but on the Windows machine, the files play only audio, no video. The screen is white.
I've tried to play these files in the Divx and VCL players, but they don't work there either.
Is there a reason these files would only work on a Mac?
--- As an aside, after installing 7.2 on above mentioned PC (running Vista), NONE of the .mov files on my hard drive run properly anymore. They are either jerky or "white". They will play fine in the VLC player. I've reinstalled quicktime; no difference. All these files were working fine in Quicktime before the upgrade.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's Avids answer:
Pro50 codecs only work in Macs, so the original files need to be EXPORTED from FCP with a special codec Avid created for Mac.
So that's that issue solved ... hopefully, let's see after the next export.
But .mov files are still screwed up on my PC.
Kirk - I did reboot the machine in SafeMode, reinstalled QT, but nope - version 7.2. still doesn't play any .mov files properly that are stored on my C-drive that previously were just fine.

Sync Settings works on the Mac, but not in Windows

On my Mac (Mountain Lion), the Sync Settings screen in Preferences is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I can choose any of the options. But on my Windows 8.1 machine, the Sync Settings options are all checked, but grayed-out. The Sync Now button is also grayed-out. Where it says "Signed in as", it's blank; it doesn't show my account name. But when I click the Manage Account button, it takes me to my CC page (creative.adobe.com/files) and I can see my stuff.
I just updated all the CC apps, but these options are still grayed-out. Anyone know why?

Always arrange pictures on your page. Select them and used Send backwards (button under). Do this till the button is grey. Now your pictures are under the text. Otherwise there is a mask over the text.

Flash drive recognized by computer but not opening.

My friend has a HP v240 flash drive with storage capacity 4 GB.
Yesterday I plugged it in my laptop and copied some movies in it. I removed it from the laptop after I was done and then I plugged it in the desktop. There was some message saying the flash drive needs to be formatted before use which i ignored and closed. After that the flash drive wouldn't open. i tried unplugging it and plugged it again but it didn't work. i tried using it in a different port. the computer recognized the pen drive but when i tried opening the removable drive from MY COMPUTER there was a msg saying 'No disc found'. It shows the same message in all the ports and also in my laptop when I tried plugging it there too. I tried all recovery options to make it work including the HP recovery tool but it wouldn't work. I tired all other methods for formatting but i am unable to format it because it shows a message that 'the device has no media'.
Please Help.

I get to answer my own question. The MacBook Pro did finally recognize the flash drive when I changed the filename of the file I copied to it on the iMac to the fat32 format. (only 8 characters --> 12345678.ext )
Makes no sense to me but I am not an Apple code writer.
