Hard Drive Recovery Not Working

Hi,
I just got a new hard drive for my HP Pavilion DV6 with Windows 7 after the original one crashed.  I am using recovery discs I made when I first got the computer to reformat it.  The beginning of the installation process goes great.  It prompts me to put in all three CDs and all three CDs are installed.  It then tells me to remove the third CD, and the next process involves installing drivers and software, I need to restart my computer, and in this next process, my computer will be restarted many times.
So I remove the third CD, press continue to restart the computer, the computer restarts...but brings me back to the same screen that it did when I first put in the new hard drive, "No boot data available, please insert recovery disc and press any key to continue".  It did this a second time when I went through the same process again.  Not sure where to go from here, and any help would be appreciated.

Hello jahebda2466,
I see that you are having a problem installing the operating system on a newly installed hard drive. I have some suggestions that may help with this issue.
You can try to take one of the memory sticks from the computer and try and reload the software. You can also re-seat the hard drive to make sure it is securely connected.
If you continue to have issues you can contact HP support for a standard set of recovery discs. Here is a link to the contact options for HP support.

My Hybrid 1TB Seagate Hard Drive will not work in my data doubler caddy installed in the optical bay of my MacBook Pro

Thanks for all the advice. It looks like I have finally got my MBP working again (after two weeks of pain).
The WD HD works fine internally, but restoring from TM introduced a whole load more of issues/incompatabilities (see above). Eventually the only thing left was to re-build rather than restore:
    i) mount the WD disk internally and install Snow Lepoard from the orginial installation disks
ii) get online, and after much trying download Lion (previously purchased). Perfrom all update.
iii) Connect my Time Capsule, identify my data, photo and music files and then copy them accross by hand
iv) install all the other applications (e.g. MS Office:mac, etc) from scratch.
This exercise has shown me that even though tools and procedures exist to address separate issues, when the complexity of inter-dependence is introduced there are a raft of problems that crop up.
Now I am back in business I will be using TM and CCC to take full and regular copies. I did this previously, which has saved me from losing my data and cherished pictures, but hopefully next time (and I'm sure there will be a next time) the recovery will be less infuriating.
BTW I got a refund on the Seagate Momentus XT. They guy in the shop said it wasn't the first time he'd heard of this issue with MBPs. Great.

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You could contact Apple Support and see if they have the original discs for that machine but it would be 10.4.11 and there's no reason not to go to at least Snow Leopard, especially since the 10.6 discs would probably cost the same as a replacement set of 10.4.11

  • External Hard Drive Will Not Work

I  purchased the recommended 1TB WD hard drive.  It worked for a couple of days, recorded some programs-- all of which froze after a few minutes, and now my DVR repeatedly shuts down and reboots when the external drive is plugged in.  Here's the message I get:
the set-top box will reset because an external hard drive was improperly disconnected
The only way I have disconnected the drive is by going into settings and clicking on "EJECT" as recommended.
Would someone please tell me what is going on here?  Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with the drive. One thing you can do to try to correct the drive issue is to hold down the power button on the drive. You will get a pop up message that an unknown storage device has been found. Click to accept the new device. The drive should now be connected. Go to the main menu of the DVR box and select the option for DVR.  Go to expanded storage and format the drive. Let us know if further assistance is needed.

  • Backing up to new external hard drive is not working

I just purchased a new 2TB FreeAgent external hard drive. I hooked it up to use as a time machine backup and in the preferences of Time Machine it said that the drive needed to be formatted. I then went to Disk Utility and erased the drive using the format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and gave it a name. Once that was done I attempted to back up again through time machine but it started the "calculating changes..." at 23% and stayed there all night. I do not know if I need to reformat it differently or why it is not working.... any suggestions?

    jwsand wrote:
I tried to hook up the external hard drive to a different computer (imac) and it worked without any problem.
Did you cancel the backup it was attempting to do, before disconnecting it? If not, did you eject it first?
Do you mean it ran backups? Or just that it was recognized? Those are very different.
The mac pro has 2 internal hard drives. One for the OS and the other for a tm backup.
Be sure that second drive is now excluded from TM Backups via TM Preferences > Options. If TM is trying to back up the internal disk's TM backups onto the new external, that might explain why it's confused (I know I am!)
I attempted to hook up this external drive to a second external tm back up
Do you mean you've "daisy chained" it, to yet another disk also containing TM backups?
and noted the different disk in the tm preferences.
Do the two disks have different names, and does TM Preferences show the new name? If not, the preferences file may be corrupt. In that case, do a "full reset" per #A4 in the Troubleshooting Tip.
Do you have any idea why this drive would not work on my mac pro but does work on my imac?
I'm not entirely sure that's true. Please clarify exactly what you're doing; what's connected where and how, and what's being backed-up.
On the Pro, you have 2 internals and how many externals? Which ones are being backed-up (ie, not on the exclusion list in TM Preferences > Options)?

  • My external hard drive is not working on my mac.

I have tried all options available such as going on finder and making my hard drives visible and disk utilities

Basically my external hard drive would not eject so i force quit it and the hard drive does not come up at all anywhere on my mac pro OS X version 10.9.4 and it isn't visible in disk utilities no and it doesn't say format either and i have tried it on a windows computer it does not show on their either. the format is Fatdos i think so i can use it on windows and mac and i cant see anything in system reports and yes it is connect by a USB. also it isn't making any noises either

  • IMac not reading hard drive, spotlight not working, all my files not showing... help!!!

    Hi folks,
I got home from a three week trip and turned on my imac, at first i realized it was running extremely slow. Then i plugged in my external hard drive, and it didn't read. I checked in disk utilities and profiler, and my hard drive was there, just not appearing in finder or desktop. I couldn't mount (it was grey) the hard drive in disk utilities either. (I tried with other hard drives, same problem; they all worked before)
Afterwards, I found out that spotlight wasn't working at all, it wasen't even initializing (see attached screenshot). When i opened "all my files", nothing appeared in the window - it was blank. Another thing is, launchpad scares me - it loads incredibly slow and the screen keeps refreshing itself.
Please help!! I don't want to reinstall the whole system and lose all my file, cause right now, I cannot backup anything since it won't read my hard drives!! Could this be some kind of apple-virus..
Anyone else with a similar situation? My system is 10.7.5, processor: i3

This is not related to any kind of malware.
It sounds like something is going very wrong with your machine, but I'm unsure what that might be that would prevent all external hard drives from working. Are you able to start up in recovery mode (hold down command-R at startup)? If so, from recovery mode, open Disk Utility and select your internal hard drive. What does the SMART Status say?

  • Clean space in hard drive does not work & storage ammount changes

Hi. I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50d). I got the message that my Start Disk is full. I have deleted almost 7G and I have cleaned the trash. But the storage says that I have just 600 Mg free and sometimes says even 30 Mg, now says 67 Mg ¿?¿?...
I am not able to make software update.
Any ideas of what is happening.
Mail seems to work strange too. When I delete some files they actually stay there.
    Thank you!

From what I have read about the usb installer, it is not intended for you to try booting from the stick after wiping your hard drive. You are to click on the installer
You may be correct, but this statement is quite confusing in that context:
    Important Note
When you install OS X Lion using the USB thumb drive, you will not be able to reinstall OS X Lion from Lion Recovery. You will need to use the USB thumb drive to reinstall OS X Lion.
So, if the Thumb drive is supposed to take the part of the Recovery partition, it seems that it should be able to boot. However, the license agreement still requires an Apple computer running Snow Leopard, so maybe it isn't bootable.

  • External hard drive does not work

I bought an external USB hard drive. At first, it worked. I could see an icon on my desktop and could load some stuff onto it.
Then I unplugged it (probably the wrong way, I just unplugged it) and when I replugged it, I could not see the icon anymore and when I go into the system specification/USB specs, I cannot see anything plugged in the port.
When I plug the drive in my old iMac, it work. I can see the icon AND the stuff that was previously loaded on the drive.
    What should I do?
    Thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The case's chipset(s) probably limit the size of drive/partition it can use.
If you need a larger drive than the case originally held, you probably need
to get a newer external drive enclosure that supports a newer/larger drive
of the type and kind you need.
As to the other issue ahead of this; if the hard drive in use is not discon-
nected properly, damages can result and you may need to use disk repair
tools or utilities to see if they can find the drive or fault behind this issue
and repair it. Maybe diskwarrior; or perhaps even the disk utility in the OSX
version the problem happened to occur. If there is a bad sector or startup
section in the suspect drive, it may be possible to find the drive using a
utility and see if it can be fixed; or it may need to be reformatted.
Pulling the plug on an attached drive is a bad idea; you need to drag the
icon of the external drive to the Trash, or use the finder's eject feature
to unmount these drives. They are not randomly hot swappable.

  • 2tb hard drive is not working in HP Pavilion a6614f

Does anyone have similar issue when you add a secondary hard drive, and the Windows Vista (64-bits home) can only see 1.5TB?  I did partition, and still not able to format the rest 500GB.
I did SATA driver update from HP web site as well.  Please help if anyone has solution.
    Thanks.

Please see if this NVIDIA Windows Vista/Win7 64-bit Driver Chipset Driver helps. Select "NO" for installing the GPU driver unless you are still running the original driver.
