Hard Drive Reformat

I ran disk utility and it said the disk couldn't be repair. It said I should reformat and restore from Time Machine. My question is how do I reformat?  I also want to know what happens to my music in iTunes Match that I don't have stored on my hard drive?  I have a Time Capsule, will my music still be in the cloud when I restore?

Reboot while holding down the command-r keys. Select Disk Utility and then run Repair Disk. Post results.

  • How can I sync iPod Mini after hard drive reformat?

My son has an iPod mini. Recently, we had to have our computer hard drive reformatted and had to reinstall iTunes. When we try to sync the mini, it shows up with all it's songs, but the songs won't update into the library, so the desktop iTunes has nothing in it. Anyone able to help me with this? I'm sure it's an easy fix but for now I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance for any help you can shed on this.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sounds like you have to transfer the songs from the mini back to the computer first.
    Check this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=797426#797426
Before there is a next time, consider backing up the songs on your computer on CD-R or DVDR or external hard disk before doing a reformat.

  • HT1420 Do I need to deauthorize my pc if I need to have the hard drive reformatted?

Do I need to deauthorize my pc if I need to have the hard drive reformatted?

You should deauthorize it first; you may not be able to later except through the Deauthorize All function, which is use-limited.

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

  • How to restore library after hard drive reformat?

Hello, I am going to reformat my Mac Pro's boot drive, and I want to make sure my iTunes library remains intact (I'm using iTunes 12).
I keep my iTunes music files on a 2nd internal hard drive, in a folder that I titled "iTunes Folder". I also plan to reformat this internal hard drive.
I have backups of both drives on an external hard drive. I'm assuming that in order to restore my iTunes library, playlists, etc., to their current state, I simply need to a) restore the user/Music/iTunes folder to its current state and b) restore the "iTunes Folder" to my 2nd internal drive. Is that correct? Or is there a different way that it should be done?
    Thanks.

Our hard drive crashed completely and we installed a completely new hard drive. My sister and I both shared the same library for our Videos. She plugged her's into the computer and all the music was erased almost immediately. How can I plug my ipod in with out having the music and other files erased??? Is there any way I can transfer music from my ipod onto her's??

  • Updating iTunes library after hard drive reformat

Is there a way to upload songs from an iPod to the iTunes library? I had to reformat my hard drive and was able to upload purchases, but I would like to upload all songs on my iPod as opposed to reloading all the CDs.

For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc.) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Hard drive reformatted. Need to delete iweb site. No backups available

Hard drive was reformatted and the iweb site material obviously lost. I would like to delete all the iweb pages i have posted using 'mobile me' as they do not show anything. Is this possible. I though it would be possible to delete the pages using 'mobile me' online.

Mount your iDisk and use the Finder to navigate the folder structure.
Delete the contents of the "Web" (no quotes) folder and all of your previously published pages will disappear.
Redo your pages in iWeb and Publish again to make new pages.

  • Re: External hard drive reformatting

Bought a new external hard drive recently, and have been using it for around 2 weeks now. It worked fine, until today, when I noticed its performance speed (folders take a long time to load, video take eternity to start up) drop. I tried to repair it using Disk Utility but it told me i had to reformat, in which i did. The problem is, even if I've reformatted it, the partition still seems to be corrupted (despite it being a newly created partition). I've been trying to repair - erase - repair -erase again and again but it really isn't working. Any advice?

I actually LIKE Hitachi drives - I have three of them that I use for cloning. It just seems as though you got a bad one - if it was a gift, could you ask the giver where they purchased it so you could exchange it for another?

  • External hard drive reformat

I purchased an external hard drive ( a Seagate 2 TB Expansion Desktop Drive) and was told by the MAC rep in the store to perform the following simple task to reformat the disk so I could drag and drop files from my iMAC and store them on the external hard drive:
    1. Go to Disk Utility
    2. Choose the External Hard Drive
    3. Select Erase
    4. Select MAC OS Extended (Journaled)
    5. Click on Erase button
Unfortunately when I do this, I get the following error:
Disk erase Failed with Error: File system formatter failed
    I have Mac OS X (10.5.8) ... what am I missing here ?
Is there something wrong with my system ?

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • External hard drive - reformat for my Mac book - HP

I have been using my HP 2TB external hard drive on my PC and ant to use it on my new mac book pro. I can see the hard drive on the mac book and I can watch movies from it but can't move any thing or add anything to it.
I gues I need to reformat it please can you explain to me how I do this.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your external disk is formatted with NTFS, a filesystem that OS X doesn't support in order to copy data to this filesystem.
If you don't want to erase your hard disk, you can use an application like Paragon NTFS that will allow you to write in your external drive without having to format your external disk.
Another option is to format your external disk. As you have movies, you should format it in exFAT. You have to format the external drive on a PC unless you haven't got a PC. If you want to do it on a Mac, use Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
If you aren't going to use your external drive with PCs, you can also use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", designed for Mac OS X but it won't be read in any PCs

  • External hard drive reformatting error: 'could not unmount disk'

I've bought a TrekStor DataStation maxi light 2TB external harddrive and I am trying to reformat it so I can use it with my Mac.
Unfortunately when I try to either 'Erase' or create a partition as detailed here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2701878?start=0&tstart=0 I get the 'could not unmount disk' error.
Is anybody able to offer a solution?
    Kind regards,
    Rhyno

Sounds like something is using (or trying to use) the disk.
Eject it if you can.  Then unplug and reconnect, and try again.
If all else fails, you may have to power down, start up from your Snow Leopard Install disc and erase/format it from there.  See the yellow box in #6 of Using Disk Utility.

  • Can I use an old Windows hard drive with Boot Camp?

I have an old windows desktop that has FL Studio files I want to transfer to Logic Pro. I'm working on a Mac Pro with 4 hard drive bays and only 3 hard drives.
I understand that Boot Camp lets you boot Wndows, but can I install Boot Camp without erasing the hard drive? I just want to be able to plug my PC drive in, hold the option key, and choose to boot the Windows drive from time to time.
Alternately, could I make a disc image of my PC hard drive, reformat it to FAT and reattach the disc image?
    Thanks,
    Jon

You can, but it's illegal. A OEM version is designed to be installed on a new computer, not on a computer with an existing operating system, so you can install Windows from there but you should know that's illegal, so Apple doesn't support it. To do this legally, you have to get a full Windows 7 disc version and use it to install Windows.
If you need the steps to install Windows on the MacBook, read > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • NB200 -00L stopped during the middle of formatting, can no longer use the hard drive recovery option

    Hello,
    NB200 -00L is the model
Power was down during the beginning of hard drive reformat,I had tried to press 0 (zero) during restart
I had also tried to press F8 during it restart, then choose repair option, but it kept rebooting itself in a loop with no error message.
I really would like to restore to the manufacturing settings.
I had my usb drive, but the system does not recognize the mirror image on my usb flash drive anymore.
Unfortunately, my model does not come with a dvd reader neither.
    What are my options?

    Netbook NB200-00L (PLL28C-00L011)
Everything for that Canadian model is here.
the system does not recognize the mirror image on my usb flash drive anymore.
I don't understand what's happening. If you cannot boot from a flash drive with recovery media, it may  be that the drive does not have the proper contents. You can remedy that by ordering a new flash drive from Toshiba.
See the section Restoring the pre-installed software from your created Recovery Media, which is on  p. 3-14 of your User's Manual.
If you cannot boot from a known bootable flash drive, I would seek service.
