Hard Drive rename / re-purpose

I have a question: I had disconnected (physically) a firewire drive (LaCie) - not my TM Drive - from my iMac a couple of weeks ago, but TM is still showing that drive every time it does a backup. I have now connected that same HD again and renamed it, reformatted it and am using it for another purpose with different files on it. TM is now showing the original HD name with all the original files as well as the new HD name with the new files.
Here is the question: I want to delete all reference with TM to the old HD name and files because I don't need them anymore and they just take space on the TM drive. It seems that Apple build in some logic so that I can not delete them. Is there a work around, or will it break the complete TM logic?

When you say the drive is showing "in Time Machine", I assume you mean in the TM environment, and not anything to do with the TM preference pane?
Have you tried the "Delete All Backups" command? When Time Machine's running, select the drive (click on your computer in the sidebar so you can see volumes). Select the old drive, and then choose "Delete All Backups of ..." from the Action menu in the window's toolbar. This gets rid of all backups, but not the current version of something, under normal circumstances, but since you don't have a current version, this might do the trick.

  • All of a sudden unaccessible imac internal hard drive, renamed "disk1s3"

    Hello,
I am having a very serious problem and I hope someone can help.
Yesterday I turned on my imac G5 1.8ghz running Mac OS X (10.4.10) and I got this message:
*"the disk you have inserted is not readable by this computer"*. Not having inserted any disk I just clicked ignore and restarted the imac. After the restart it looked like the computer frose, I could see my desktop wallpaper but none of the files on my desktop and then when I restarted again the computer I had the case of grey screen with the blinking question mark/file icon.
Knowing that this means that the computer can't find a startup disk, I restarted the computer and inserted the CD with the OS X and opened utilities manager from the CD.There I saw that the internal hard drive has been renamed "disk0S3" and the only info the manager was giving me was that it was not mounted, it's size and that it is mac OS Extended (Journaled) formated. I tried to repair it but I got an error message each time I tried.
I tried to restart the computer several times during the day and each time I had the grey screen/globe followed by the grey screen/blinking question mark folder. At one point the computer went into a kernel screen and frose.
I then tried to restart in target mode and use the utilities manager from my intel 2Ghz Macbook. In target mode the fans of the imac go nuts, it sounds like the computer is going to take off and then I get on the MacBook the *"the disk you have inserted is not readable by this computer"* message. There the manager recognizes the internal hard drive of the imac as "disk1s3" and gives me the same info as the OS X CD manager.
If I click on the icon of the hard drive "above" on the utilities menu, the manager recognises the imac as AAPL FireWire Target Media, it's size, it's write status, apple partition map but says that the S.M.A.R.T. status is not supported.
I shuted down and restarted in target mode but now, when I try to open the imac in target mode it goes into target mode but the MacBook freezes.
Now I must say that this happened out of nowhere. I didn't do any software update, I didn't perform any different task on the imac from the ones I normally perform.
I have so many important files in that computer I cannot begin to describe how serious the situation will be if I lose them all. I know I should back-up my files and I usually do but now it's been a while and I am really learning the lesson the hard way.
Please if someone can help I would really appreciate it.
I apologize for the length of the post but I tried many things before posting here and I thought that it would be useful to give as many details as possible to someone that could help.
    Thank you in advance

Welcome to Discussions - the fact that the S.M.A.R.T. status is not recognized and the flashing questions mark appear seem to indicate that your hard drive has failed. If you have access to TechToolPro or Disk Warrior, try to use them to check the drive status. This will likely not work, and I'm afraid your disk is toast.
You could try to remove the drive and put it in an external case and try to mount it on your MacBook, but I don't hold out much hope for that either. You can try using [Data Rescue|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/211375] to retrieve your data.
You can also take it in to Apple and see what they say. Please let us know how things turn out,

  • External hard drive renamed, now lightroom does not see my files

I have been putting all my pictures in a folder on my external hard drive and then pulling them into Lightroom as they are added. The external HD  was named (J:). I just went on vacation and decided to take a laptop and my hard drive along to work on photos. WHen I returned and plugged my hard drive back in to my regular desktop  it showed up as (L:). I tried to simply rename it, but that did not work. Lightroom does see any of my folders as they were all mapped to the (J:)  drive.
    Any ideas?

Right click on the top level folder in Lightroom folder panel and choose Finder Missing Folder or Update Folder Location. The first usually only shows in your situation, but on occasions it might note, therefore the second should be enough. This linked tutorial should guide you through the remaining steps.

  • Hard drive renaming.

Is it possible, with or without Terminal, to rename an external hard drive?
The screen shot shows exactly which part I mean with the arrows.
I actually use this hard drive on my TV, and the TV recognizes the names "2TB Hitachi" and "1TB WDC" instead of Movies 2 and Movies 1.
I had difficulty web-searching because I don't know the different terms for the two different labels of the drive.  (2 TB Hitachi versus Movies 2.)  The only results I found were to rename in Get Info or by highlighting and pressing return.. both of which I already knew.

That's a bummer.  But thanks for the reply.
What is the nomenclature of the different headings for the drives?  If I know the difference between "2TB Hitachi" and "Movies 2" I can try a more targeted web-search for some other utilities.

  • Hard Drive Renamed?

A friend was using my computer for about two weeks. When I got it back, I noticed that the hard drive was renamed on my desktop. I asked my friend if he renamed the HD. He did not, and he doesn't know how it happened. (He also never used a Mac before). Is this something I should be concerned about? Oh, and if it helps at all, it was renamed "bods." Thanks for any help.

Thank you. So, I'm guessing that I should not be
concerned that the HD was renamed. Thanks again.
    No damage done.

  • Hard drive renamed to в,./?

Finder error came up. I restarted my MBP and after restart my hard drive was renamed. My wallpaper was also missing. I couldnt find much online. Would appreciate any help please.

Your HDD name was probably changed through some keyboard accident. Select the HDD icon on your Desktop. Press RETURN to activate the name field. Rename to "Macintosh HD" without the quotes, then press RETURN again.
You can change the Desktop picture using the Desktop & Screensaver preferences in System Preferences.

  • Hard Drive Renamed, Aperture Crashes

I recently noticed that the portable hard drive that I use to store my referenced photos in Aperture has been renamed to "20070605034" in the Manage Referenced Files volumes list (the actual hard drive name has not been renamed). Now, all of my referenced files stored on this drive need to be relinked.
The problem is that when I try to manage the referenced files and click on the "20070605034" volume in the list, Aperture crashes. I really don't want to have to re-import all my photos again, sort them, and apply adjustments. Has anyone had this same type of problem? Any recommendations on how to easily fix the volume reference?

You probably had the drive selected and inadvertently changed the name. Just select the drive and click once to activate the name then change it to what it was - usually Macintosh HD.

  • My hard drive renamed itself ??

I booted my macbook up this morning and instead of saying 'macbook HD' all it has is a ']' symbol. I looked and it says it was last modified a couple months ago when I put a new hard drive in. So it doesn't say it was just modified. I'm so confused. My camera was also on when I booted it up. I had to completely turn it off to get it to turn off. Rebooting it didn't turn it off.
Is something wrong with my computer? Why did it rename itself?

Try resetting your SMC, trash your Finder preferences and reboot.

  • Hard drive renamed itself

I woke up my MacBook Pro this morning to find that the hard drive name had changed to ';lkjhgAZ. With that many characters in the name, I don't think I accidentally changed it.
Google tells me others are having this issue, and most of the "new" HD names seem to start with a '.
The only recent thing I've done was install the latest updates for iTunes and Safari on 12.19.11.
Anyone know what is causing this, or how to fix beyond just renaming the HD again?

I just had this same problem today. It's not a probelm per se, as you can just rename it and continue as if nothing happened. Still a little bizzare nonetheless...
Mine got renamed to 3sz FWIW.

  • Hard drive renames itself

My hard drive keeps renaming itself for example this is what I had "Harddrive for mac" and now it's been renamed as "Harddrive for mac 1" .That wouldn't be so bad if the computer would let me change the name back. Every time I try to change the name back to "Harddrive for mac" the computer keeps renaming it as "Harddrive for mac "1". I go to the get info Side bar but every time I press enter it adds "1". Even if I don't press enter and I close the window for get info it's still named as "Harddrive for mac "1". I've tried other names and it doesn't add the extension "1" only on"Harddrive for mac" it that's the extension. And I have to keep the same name because there are programs that can't have their permissions changed(at least that's what they say). OH and the hard drive is an external hard drive via usb 3.0 and is from Western Digital (wd).So can someone please help me with this PLZ.

Man sometimes I feel like an idiot. I'd already tried clicking on it to see if I could rename it but it didn't work. When i tried ctrl-click, I saw that I could rename it and did. Duh.
As for how it could have happened, your post gave me a pretty good idea: kitten that sometimes crosses the keyboard.
However it required a password to finalize the change which the kitten couldn't possibly have known.
    Thanks.

  • Odd issue with hard drive renaming itself on reboot.

I have an odd problem I have no idea what is causing it. I have a mac pro and I have multiple hard drives internally and i also have two esata hard raid drives connected to the extra esata ports using the cable extender. Anyways, one of those drives renames itself on reboot, causing all kinds of problems when i then try to access files on it. For example, if I had a program that had its files stored there it wouldn't be able to find them when it went looking because the volume all of a sudden is "missing" but what happens is it will attach a 1 to the end of its name. Then when I reboot, it will remove the 1. On next reboot, it will repeat and so on. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

My guess is that there is something wrong with the connection between the computer and the drive. The commonest cause is backup software that is in the middle of backing up something when the connection to the backup drive is dropped, so that the backup software creates an actual folder inside the /Volumes folder with the name of the drive and does its backup to this folder. The result is that the next time the drive mounts it gets the "DriveName 1" designation, and a bunch of space on your startup drive has mysteriously disappeared. So I think what is happening is that you are intermittently losing the drive. Whether the problem is the cable, the connectors, or the drive itself, you could try experimenting to find out. Try swapping the cable for another, and if that doesn't work try plugging the cable into a different connector on the computer, and so on.

  • PSE7 External hard drive rename does not disconnect files but...

I am running Vista, and keep my pic files on an external HD (Drive F:).
Occasionally I would run into the issue that my EHD would get bumped to the G: drive (because I would plug something else into the USB port). When I would open PSE6 Organizer with the drive designated as G:, my files would show as disconnected. I could either search and reconnect all the files each time, or just remap (am I using that term correctly?) the drive back to F: and reopen the organizer and it would find them fine. I understood how to fix this problem in PSE6. I also assumed if I wanted to change my EHD designation, that would be the way to do it.
Here's the issue: I've upgraded to PSE7, converted my catalogs, and all is well WHEN the drive remains as F:. I want to remap my EHD to the W: designation (to solve the bumping to a different drive letter name issue). But now in PSE7, if I change the drive letter to anything other than F:, and then open the Organizer, the F: designation shows up as a 'ghost' (greyed out, and read-only evidently).
I can still view the files, edit them, print them, and if I try to reconnect like before, it tells me there are no disconnected files! I CAN'T move the files or folders, create new folders, add folders to watchlist, etc. (by right-clicking in the folder location view). Incidentally, the properties for each file lists them as on the W: drive, but clicking on a file points to a 'ghost/greyed' folder under the 'ghost' F: drive in the folder location view.
HOW can I change the drive designation and get the organizer to update the thumbnails to point to THAT drive designation, so I can work with all the files and folders like normal? Am I stuck on the F: drive forever???!!!
    Thanks!

John, Thanks for the reply. Here is what I get when I run the utility with my EHD set to F:, which is where PSE7 knows most of the the files to be. (I do have some occasional files on the internal C: drive.)

OKay, I KNOW there is a wrong drive letter in the catalog, but when this happened in PSE6, I could just reconnect files and go with the new drive letter. That's actually what I want to do here (as painful as it will be to reconnect all my files!) I'm tired of my EHD drive getting bumped around to different letter designations (and causing problems like this), so I'm trying to set it to something far out that won't get bumped.

  • Using external hard drive connected to desktop as time machine disk for laptop

I recently purchased an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up my laptop and desktop macs. Both are running Mountain Lion (10.7.5). The desktop is physically connected to both the hard drive and to my modem. I have enabled pretty much every sharing option on both the laptop and desktop. When my router crapped out I began just using the internet sharing capabiilty.
I have been able to chose the desktop as the disk for backing up my laptop, but I want to use the hard drive (connected to the desktop) as the disk. I cant figure out how to do this yet. I can easily access the hard drive by using either the "connect as user" option. I thought that perhaps I could broadcast the connection somehow as an airport connection, but I don't know how to, or if this is even possible.
The desktop is a mac mini, and the laptop is a macbook pro. Both were purchased in mid 2011.
