Hard Drive Repeatedly Unseats Itself

Hey everyone, I have a 20GB iPod 4G from December, 2004. Lately I've been having some problems with it that result in the folder icon appearing on the screen. I've tried restarting it and doing a software restore. Neither work, infact the software restore can't even be completed. Apparently the hard drive is coming unseated.
I brought the iPod in to a nearby Apple store, where they reseated the hard drive and temporarially fixed it. A few days later the hard drive came unseated again (the guys at the Genius Bar ask me if I run with it or have dropped it, I haven't) and they reseated it for me. Then it died again.
I tried opening it up myself with a guitar pick and checking all the connections. This got me about 10 minutes of music playback before it died again.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had a simmilar problem or has any ideas of things I could try. I only want to get about 5 more months out of it, and would really rather not make another trip to the Apple store.

First off, is it possible that your first language is not English (I don't mean that sacrastically)? I really don't feel like you're understanding my posts.
Try searching around the Discussions though.
The first thing I tried was searching the discussions. I couldn't find anything on an iPods drive coming unseated, so I started my own thread.
It must be a problem with the disk on the hard drive,
it's having trouble reading it.
Like I said earlier, the hard drive is physically unseating itself, even under light use. It's not an issue with the actual drive platter ("disk").
Your best/safest option is to get a new MP3 player.
Once again, I really don't feel like you're understanding my situation. My iPod is physically intact and the hardware is functioning properly, but the hard drive keeps coming unseated.
Thanks for trying to help, but I don't feel like your responses have adequately addressed my problem. Does anyone else have any ideas? I may try opening it up and inspecting the interal connection again.

  • Hard drive has 'fixed' itself... can this last?

My iBook (G3, just over four years old) suddenly started making clanking and clicking noises, and 'hanging' while this was going on. It would do this for short periods, then longer periods, then finally it would turn itself off. I took it to a Genius Bar, where they said it was the hard drive dying. That evening it totally failed to reboot.
However, the next morning it booted fine. For the next day or so I got occasional clunking and clicking, but it seemed to work well for longer and longer periods. Now it's as if nothing ever happened.
    Can anyone suggest an explanation?
Should I assume that the hard drive (assuming that's where the problem was) is on its way out, or might it really have fixed itself?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for this. Everything is backed up. Unfortunately, a new hard drive will cost £220 sterling (around $400 US at the moment I think) to buy and intall - I've had two quotes, both around this price (including labour). Given that, I was thinking of buying a new machine - the cheapest MacBook, on the student deal Apple are offering until October.
So I guess my question is: should I hang on and see how much longer my HD lasts (could it be a year or more? or is that extremely unlikely? I've had no problems now for two days) or should I get the new machine while the deal lasts, on the assumption that the HD may have calmed down for now but will definitely act up again soon?
    Opinions welcome!

  • HDD Invalid Sibling error, one hard drive has renamed itself with another harddrives name and now gives invalid Sibling error, what can i do?

    Hi
So I have a few dozen hard drives for archiving and two of them have gone insane, The drives are named B1A and B6A. B1A is mounting and can be accessed however the desktop icon shows up as a faded yellow instead of the regular color and doesnt show in the finder sidebar.
B6A is showing its partition as B1A (this is wrong) and not mounting at all. when repair is run it gives an invalid sibling error.
What can i do, i've never heard about something like this.
These two hard drives were used recently and worked fine could OSX somehow have mixed up HDD partition names on different drives
Also these are mounted via USB, OSX 10.7.5

    Thank you Jim and Apple2Freak,
I appreciate your comments. I am now suggesting to my friend to buy a legal OS and if that is the case I am suggesting to him to move to OSX instead of OS9. Luckily he let me know there wasn't much data on that drive that he needed to save. I am still trying to determine if I could still use this hard drive with the keylength errors if I erase it or if the hard drive has permanent damage. I am hoping that I could install OSX on it and erase the hard drive to start again.
This imac (slot loading version) can support up to OS 10.3.9 however I might consider Xpostfacto to try to run 10.4. But then I would need to buy 10.3.9 as well as 10.4 and that would double my OS cost. I think I might just look for OS 10.3.9 only. Its not worth it for me to buy two OSes for it.
Jim, your post was very interesting because it also pointed out that it could be an issue of bad RAM. A few months ago we installed some new second-hand RAM and I wonder if that is the cause of all these problems. I will have to check that first.
    Thanks again!

  • Hard drive keeps cloning itself in finder

This is the second time I saw this on a Mac, and never happened to me before (being working in a AASP for the last 9 years)
The disc fails, and won't boot, but you can see all the data starting up in Target or mounting the HD as an external device in a known good computer and system.
But, after a few minutes the disc mounts again as a new FW external drive, and kees doing it as long as its conected.
I was able (apparenty) to extract all the info, conning it with third party software, but, the surprise is that none of the cloned files worked.
Disk utilities repairs the volume, and restores permissions... but the disc fails again.
I've tryed disc warrior (wich is unable to fix the drive as it keeps mounting itself every few minutes) techtools, data rescue... all with the same result, the drive seems to be repaired but as it keeps clonning or mounting, eventually fails again, and no data can be copyed  if the copy time tooks more time than the time the drive takes to cole itsef agai.
So, any idea what this could be?
any possible solutions or work arounds to extract the info?
Even GSX didn't know what that was, at least a few months ago...
    I will appreciate any ideas.
(Mac OsX 10.7 installed on bad HDD, OsX 10.7, 10.8 & 10.9 tryed to solve this matter)
    * One common error when trying to copy items is: The finder can't complete the operation because some data in ".DS_Store" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)
Picture shows three FW external units identical to each other.. (as it turns to be the same one replicating itself)

Assume for second your drive has failed totally, and get another backup drive to backup your source.
Once backed up you can determine how bad the failure is with Disk Utility Repair Disk, or if not revealing Alsoft Disk Warrior. Always have at two known working copies of your data at all times.

  • HELP: WD External Hard drive disconnecting by itself after Maverick OSX update.

    Hello!
I just finished updating my OSX from Mountain Lion 10.8 to Maverick 10.9
I am using 15 inch Macbook Pro late 2011 processor is i7 and 4GB memory.
Before on ML I'm rarely or never expirience this where my external drive is disconnecting
by itself. I am using USB hub (10 ports) I have 2 HD's both are 1TB and on that usb port
my cooling pad is also connected as well the data plug for iphone. My USB port has another
power cable which is also in use.
    Now I have three questions
    1) Do you think that one of my HD has an issue? because this is the only one
that is disconnecting by it self? when I unplug and plug it back it shows to Utility Disk
but it is not mounting. I manage to restore it by clicking the repair button several time
but it keeps disconnecting by itself and I am not comfortable on doing this time to time.
    2) Do you think updating to Maverick is one of the reason why this is happening?
    3) What solution i can do to solve this issue.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi to All
It seems my issue is already solved I didn't expirience any auto ejecting anymore after I formated my 1TB using the Disk Utility. I already bring back the files that I removed before from my 1TB and so far its all good.
Another tip is if you will plug your external HD's to a usb port give a one interval slot because if you do there's a possibility that it may auto eject again, this happen to me since updating to Maverick but in Mountain Lion maybe it happen to be once or thrice maybe because of bad ejecting that i've done to my 1TB.
This all is as per my intuition, observation and pure guts but now im good and my usb's are not auto ejecting anymore from the day I'd format it to disk utility using erase (of course in exfat format) until now. I wish this will help others too...
    Have a nice day!

  • Installed leopard, now secondary internal drive repeatedly dismounts itself

After searching the discussions, I'm now resorting to posting for help for the first time in about a decade of owning macs.
I finally upgraded to leopard and now my secondary internal drive keeps dismounting (disappearing). I get the same error message that I'd get if an external drive had been disconnected without first dragging it to the trash. When I restart the drive reappears but then decided to unmount at some random time afterward.
I'm about to reset the SMU. I've already reset the PRAM and run Disk Warrior. S.M.A.R.T. status is verified on both my main and secondary drives. Disk Utility shows no problems. I've backed up all my files and am thinking I should just replace the drive. I'm worried that I'll just run into the same issue though and wind up spending money on a new drive that I don't need.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    James

I have the same problem randomly although I don't get an error message. One time it has unmounted after startup otherwise it fails to mount at startup. I had been leaving a CD in the machine at startup and wondered if this could be the reason. I started removing the CD prior to shutdown and the problem has pretty much gone away, but not completely.

  • Hard Drive Turning Itself Off

    Hey,
Recently my Toshiba Netbook NB505-N508BL hard drive would turn itself off and then after a few seconds, it would turn itself on and sometimes this happens right after another, sometimes a few minutes later. I turned the "turn hard drive off after X minutes" option off in windows 7, but it is still doing the turning off then on thing. When the hard drive is off, I can still surf the web and play game or listen to music, but when it's about to turn on, my screen would freeze for about 1 sec. I used the check for disk error thing, but it didn't find anything.
So I used an external optical drive and formatted the hard drive and did a fresh install of windows 7. At first I thought the problem was gone, but on the 2nd day, the hard drive started turning itself off and on again. I am not sure if there's a problem with any of my netbook devices or not, but they are all functional. My suspicion is that it's about to die, so I downloaded a few disk diagnostic programs. I ran the quick and full test, both turned out "pass". I am currently out of ideas and couldn't find anyone with the same problem online.
I have back ups of my files, so I'm not that worried. I am just really annoyed by that sound as if the system would shut down any minute. Anyone have any solution to this?
    Thanks a lot!

LMAO, should have known not to ask in here XD

  • Hard drive parks itself every 10 to 30 minutes

    Hi,
I just received a L750-BT4N22 Toshiba laptop. Every 10 to 30 minutes when the computer is not in use the hard drive will park itself. I have searched on the internet and some seem to think this is related to the power settings. The only thing I changed was when the computer is plugged in I have it set to "never" go to sleep. Has anyone ever heard of this and what can I do to stop the hard drive from parking itself every so many minutes?
    Thanks,
    yeto

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
I changed the settings to 360 minutes but the hard drive still (parks/or turns on and off very quickly) every ten minutes. It makes a click-click sound. It is not coming from the speakers. It is coming from the drive itself. Would you know of any power settings that Toshiba has installed that might be different versus Windows 7? Would you have any other suggestions that I  can try?
I have 4 Toshiba laptops and this is the only one with this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Hard drive renames itself

My hard drive keeps renaming itself for example this is what I had "Harddrive for mac" and now it's been renamed as "Harddrive for mac 1" .That wouldn't be so bad if the computer would let me change the name back. Every time I try to change the name back to "Harddrive for mac" the computer keeps renaming it as "Harddrive for mac "1". I go to the get info Side bar but every time I press enter it adds "1". Even if I don't press enter and I close the window for get info it's still named as "Harddrive for mac "1". I've tried other names and it doesn't add the extension "1" only on"Harddrive for mac" it that's the extension. And I have to keep the same name because there are programs that can't have their permissions changed(at least that's what they say). OH and the hard drive is an external hard drive via usb 3.0 and is from Western Digital (wd).So can someone please help me with this PLZ.

Man sometimes I feel like an idiot. I'd already tried clicking on it to see if I could rename it but it didn't work. When i tried ctrl-click, I saw that I could rename it and did. Duh.
As for how it could have happened, your post gave me a pretty good idea: kitten that sometimes crosses the keyboard.
However it required a password to finalize the change which the kitten couldn't possibly have known.
    Thanks.

  • Having trouble with USB2.0 external hard drive "unmounting" itself

    ibook g4 (early 2005)
I have bought an external 120 gig hd and am trying to use it to store files on. when i transfer files to and from it, the hard drive magically unmounts itself and gives an error device removal. I don't know if the HD needs too much power or what. I have tried to update my system... and no help. what can i do... besides taking the freaking hd out of the external case and installing it in my laptop.
I have never had a problem with usb devices before on this laptop. what gives?

I'm not sure of what is the cause for this is, but because it stays alive while it's in use makes me think there is some sort of hardware sleep mode or something. I don't know enough about USB to be sure though. Maybe a temporary fix would be some sort of script we could launch at startup that reads a very small amount of data from the afflicted drive every 10 seconds or so. I have a little programming knowledge. Maybe I can figure the script out. It's definitely not a true fix, but it might get us by for the meantime.

  • Incremental back ups to external hard drive and importing to new computer

I need some clarification on precisely how to back up additional pictures on a PC to an external hard drive to keep all the pictures in the same catalog and folder structure.I have exported my existing catalog (exporting the negative files and including the previews) to an EHD to a folder I have created called My lightroom Photos.Within this folder there are three sub-folders:(1)My Lightroom Photos previews.irdata, (2) My Lightroom Photos.lrcat LRCAT file and (3) Pictures (which contain copies of all the subject folders I have created on import-the original pictures being retained on the computer hard drive). When LR opens you have the option of backing up the alterations to pictures in an EHD (but not the pictures themselves). So if some alterations in the develop module are made, these are backed up as a fourth sub- folder on the EHD with the date recorded. However,if certain pictures are added to Lightroom following the earlier catalog export, how can these pictures together with the alterations be added to that same exported catalog with pictures added to various established folder names -eg France, Italy etc? LR is currently set to back up to the parent folder-My Lightroom Photos.
Secondly, I believe that to import the catalog into LR on a second computer, all that is necessary is direct LR to open the last dated LRCAT file from My Lightroom Photos folder on the EHD.However,my last backed up "fourth" LR folder only imported two grayed out images with no previews visible.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    I assume that what you really need is some form of keeping the photograph folders on your internal hard drive in sync with the folders on your external hard drive (the catalog itself can be backed up from within Lightroom). This downloadable little utility works for me when I want to keep my spreadsheets, letters, iTunes files ...etc... backed up;
    http://www.goodsync.com/download/update
It's nothing to do with Lightroom. You first set up simple jobs within the utility, telling it which folders on your internal drive should be backed up to which folders on your external drive. It will then run, and copy to the ehd any items in the source folder that have changed since the last sync. Then, if your internal hard drive fails, you can copy these folders and catalogs from your ehd to the replacement hd, using the original folder structure.
In Lightroom, the catalog is the main organisational tool, rather than the folder. I let LR decide on it's own folder structure, because I never refer to my RAW files outside of LR. Hope this helps.

  • Recovery discs do not work with new hard drive

Hi I have come here desperately seeking help as I am not too knowledgeable with the workings of computers and I have spent an incredible amount of time just trying to get my laptop to some level of functionality.  I purchased a HP Envy and it had a corrupt hard drive which would not work from day one, laptop was new.  After a year of constant pressure on HP they finally decided to replace it and let me choose any laptop so I went with the Beats Envy 14 as it was the best one offered from the selection.  Low and behold the thing would not work properly from day one, again my brother who is much more of an expert said that there was definitely a hard drive issue so for the past 3 years I have put up with a computer that constantly crashes with BSOD, where I have lost data on numerous occasions (only so often I can back up), that I have had to constantly reset the thing using HP recovery discs, and that generally cannot cope when performing multiple tasks.   HP are most certainly shocking builds from my experience.  Then just last week the hard drive just craps itself and the laptop no longer will boot up.  I took it to a guy to get it at leYst working again so he has installed a new hard drive but with an old version of Windows 7.  I want to go back to the Windows version I was akin to on the HP recovery disk , and essentially have it all set up as before except for now having a workable hard drive however I get the message:  "This computer is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs.Error: 0100 - 3385 - 3078" I also tried out of interest to load my old Windows 7 disc I had and XP but had no success.  Tried booting from startup etc and various things suggested on help forums.  Please tell me I am not stuck with this version of windows.  Whilst the discs included Windows 7 it was a totally different version, this home premium one is terrible. Any help/advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

no they were both 500gb. I read about that already, I heard about creating a partition for recovery etc but this is all a bit above me , as I said I am not very technical when it comes to the working of a computer.  These discs worked perfectly before but now with the new hard drive will not load at all.  I essentially hate the Windows Home Premium verions the guy who fixed it put on, whilst the discs had Windows 7 on them the icons were way smaller, the desktop neater, the buttons different, everything was a lot more modern and I was used to it.  This version looks like something from the 90s, have to constantly adjust size of Mozilla when browsing as it is huge.  I have my own version of Windows 7 on another disc but the hard drive will not let it load either........considering waiting for Windows 10 but again unsure if this new hard drive will even let that update Thanks

  • External hard drives quit

All my USB external hard drives quit by themselves time by time, and couldn't cope files to them. "not ejected properly" warning came up all the time whenever I wanted to copy something to or from them, and you can't delete files from them either. They were all used once with the old iMac. Can't format them, they would quit when you try it. They all have their own power supply, not used as Time Machine backup.
    Running 10.6.6 on Mac Pro.

Good point, thanks! They were all connected separately.
Before the latest OX 10.6.6 update, I had problem with the Mouse, it would freeze time by time, I had to unplug and replug it, sometimes this worked, sometimes not, diskwarrior wouldn't help. The screen looked weird during the start of the machine, had 1-2 seconds of sketch sort of graphic in stead of pure blue, I thought it was graphic card problem, but it was a newly upgraded card.
After the update, all became normal. But I didn't use those hard drives at that time. While I am writing the reply, the hard drive ejected by itself again. All internal drives seem working normal, including time machine, but it is getting full, that's why I try to move some to externals.

  • Seeing external hard drive for mac 1 mounted proprly on shared mac 2 deskto

    Hi
I have an imac with an external hard drive connected, which is on the desk top and can be accessed by imovie etc. On my MacBook I can see and use the external drive under the shared section and works fine, however I'd like it to appear on my desk top as an external hard drive so I can use it normally in imovie. When its time machine kicks in (sectioned off the drive for the 2 macs and storage), the hard drive section mounts itself then disappears as it should, so sort of thinking there must be a way.
    Than you in advance

    Hi VK
Thank u for the reply. It just wont do that. Its a sharepoint folder not a hard drive in the shared finder window under the imac.
what do you mean? do you mean you don't see it when you click on the imac in the sidebar? then it's not properly shared.
