Hard drive replaced, iphone not recognized

My MacBook's hard drive failed yesterday. The Apple Store replaced it in a few hours (sweet). I have been lazy and have not backed up my MacBook since February. When the set-up menu appeared for my new MacBook hard drive I transferred over info from my February firewire drive backup. Now when I plug my iphone into my MacBook nothing happens. What do I need to do to fix this?

if you have little snitch running disable it before opening itunes ... don't forget to re-enable it after your done syncing.

  • Hard Drive replacement does not let HP System Recovery execute.

I have a HP Pavillion HP3 (H8-1114) and I want to replace the hard drive on the machine. However when I try to run a System Recovery from the HP Recovery Dvd's I created using the HP software that came with the PC, it tells me that the Hard drive size does not match, and the recovery process fails. As much as I hate to say that I don't want to live off a bare Windows 7 Image, and drivers.
What I Am trying to do is: downgrade from the 1TB hard drive to a 250gb hard drive due to the fact that after using the computer for 2 years the Operating System has failed me more than 5 times, and rather than wiping the entire 1TB hard drive, I just wipe off the 250GB hard drive, reinstall from recovery discs, and when I have Windows up and running, then let apps know where everything is. (Example, I have Steam, and when ever I used to do restores on my old PC I just tell steam that certain games are located on another hard drive, Windows Libraries, {Music, Videos, Photos} etc. etc. etc.)
is this possible or AM I going to have to back files up and restore them everytime I have to do a system restore? What if the stock hard drive really fails and I can't install the operating system I bought with my HP computer into the new hard drive because it just won't do it? And is it possible to tell the recovery software to just use a partition in the hard drive instead of having to wipe the entire drive and continue the recovery process?

Since the HP Recovery discs will not install on a hard drive that is smaller then a predetermined size, I would consider recovering the HP OS (using the HP Recovery Discs) to a 1TB. After the OS is on the 1TB, it can be shrunk and "cloned" to your 250 GB hard drive. Once this is done and all the drivers are update and all the software is installed, you can create a "system image" that can be restored to the hard drive at a later date.
This way you don't have recover the OS, update the drivers, and install all your software everytime the system craps out on you.

  • External hard drive clicking and not recognized by mac will DiskWarrior work?

First of all apologizes if I've posted in the wrong community I couldn't find one that really fit my particular query.
I'll give a quick rundown of what happened and see if anyone can help or suggest a course of action. My Seagate External HDD model SRD0SP0 was mounted to my 2013 MacBook Air when it started to make a loud noise freezing the computer and requiring me to force shutdown the entire system. I immediately rebooted the computer and it started up again fine but when I tried plugging in the drive to the USB it would only spin and beep at regular intervals and then go quite. The drive did not mount to the desktop but I could see it in DiskUtility although the 'verify' and 'repair' options were greyed out. I tried to connect to a PC but it would not recognize the drive either. I left the drive alone for a few months and now when I plug it in it starts to fire up with the whirl sound but that is quickly followed by 5 faint ticks followed by a louder click. It almost sounds like something is dragging and the click is it coming to an end before starting up again. (I have a .m4a recording of the this but I don't see an option to upload) This goes on for about 20 seconds and then a window pops up saying something along the lines of 'this disk is not recognized by this computer' and the options to 'initialize' 'ignore' or 'eject'. I have only ever clicked eject. As before the drive is visible in DiskUtility but the options are greyed out.
I contacted a data recovery agency and their response was:
I would recommend to remove bare drive from the External casing and connect it to a computer directly or via another USB enclosure. If the drive is internally fine you should be able to see and copy the files. If you still get the same symptoms then your clicking hard drive most likely has internal problem with read/write heads and needs head assembly swapped from a donor. It's a very serious problem and recovery procedure in this case requires a lot of experience, use of class 100 clean room and specialized equipment.
If stored files are not particularly important you should replace the hard drive. If you need data from the drive we could recover it for $950 USD.
At this time I am not comfortable taking my drive apart and I can not afford close to 1k in repair costs. From my research on this forum I have seem multiple suggestions to try DiskWarrior but I am not sure that it will work with the problems that I am describing. Before I spend the money has anyone had a similar problem and had success recovering their data via DiskWarrior? Or do I have to resort to the data recovery agency or the freezer technique?

If the drive is making clicking sounds then it will probably fail. That's evidence of a mechanical issue. DW isn''t going to fix that nor will Disk Utility. Only replacing it with a new drive will fix it. While you can you should make a backup.

  • Macbook Pro.. Trying to change hard drive.. Not recognizing it..

Hello all.. Thank you ahead of time for your help.. My brother recently gave me his MacBook Pro 13".. He told me that the hard drive was broken and would just need to be replaced.. So i ordered a new hard drive off amazon and followed the directions to put it in.. It seems pretty easy to pop in and the model # matched the old hard drive.   Sadly, my brother has no disks or anything of that nature.. just the box it came in.  When I started the computer the white screen came up so i held down option and signed into the wifi.. I attempted the Internet Recovery method and was able to get to the screen shown below.. When I went to Disk Utilities I was unable to find the hard drive i just installed.  Here are some pictures of what I'm seeing.. Is it a faulty new hard drive?  Am i doing something wrong?
    Old Hard Drive
    Can get to this screen....
When trying to press Reinstall OS X.. this pops up.. probably bc HDD is not recognized...
When entering disk utility.. It does not show the new hard drive
This is a pic of the new hard drive.. pretty much identical to the old one.. New one says TW01 T while the old one says TW01 S.. not sure if this matters
When popping back in the old one.. I get this after holding down option.. Does this mean it is reading the old HD and it is not a cable problem?
After choosing either of those options it goes to this screen and no further.. So it seems like it recognizes the old HD but is only able to access Internet Recovery with the new one.. But is not picking up the new HD.. Any help would be much appreciated.. Thank you!

When popping back in the old one.. I get this after holding down option.. Does this mean it is reading the old HD and it is not a cable problem?
Well, clearly it recognizes the old drive. For one thing you are able to boot from the Recovery HD. You cannot do an Internet Recovery because that model is too old. But you can try erasing the Macintosh HD volume and see if the drive is truly dead (old one, that is.)
Drive Erase for Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select the Macintosh HD volume to erase from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
After you erase the volume quit Disk Utility and return to the Utilities Menu. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
If you can succeed with the above you don't have to replace the old drive just yet. As to why the new drive failed to appear is likely due to one of two reasons:
    The drive itself is DOA.
The ribbon cable was not properly connected.

  • My external hard drive is suddenly not recognized.

I have a thunderbolt enabled 1.5 Terabyte Seagate FreeAgent Go Drive. It was used as a simply external hard drive and then I added it to be used as a time machine location. After the first initial backup, it suddenly became no longer recognizeable. It does not apear in the finder, disk utility, or in the terminal when I ask for list of the Volumes. The drive light is on, I can hear the disk spinning, and it warms up as normal after being plugged in to the computer for a period of time. Still, I am unable to recognize the drive in any way.
Ideally, I would like to save the files if possible. If not possible, I'm happy to reformat the disk but this is not possible at this time with the drive being unrecognized by any means I am aware of.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am using 2.3 GHZ i7 Retina MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM. I'm on 10.9.1.

Yes, exactly. It's very strange. I've never had this happen. Drives fail but then don't apear in the DiskUtility app. This drive is "there" but I cannot seem to preform any action on it. This is the type of response received (in Log) I get whenever I attempt any action:

  • WD Smartware, external hard drive back up not recognized by Macbook Pro

I use WD external hard drive as back up for my Macbook Pro using WD Smartware. All software is upto date but when I plug in my external hard drive it is now not recognised by my Mac. It does not appear in Finder or Disk Utility but it does show up in System Profiler. It has worked fine until now. I have changed the UCB cables multiple times, the external WD hard drive has its own power suppy and other external hard drives work in the same usb port. When I plug the external drive into a PC it is recognised but obviously will not let me use it. When I go to access via the PC it prompts me for the password to open the drive, however when I plug into my Mac, when I click on 'unlock drive' its says that the drive is not locked. The WD Smartware software runs to check the files on my Mac but after categorising them the 'back up' option is not highlighted and it will not access the external WD drive.
How can I access the WD external drive ? System Profiler data is below. Many thanks, apologies for any ignorance and thanks in anticipation of any help !

  • External Hard Drive and Computer NOT recognizing IPod

Can anyone please help me? I purchased an external hard drive to store all my songs instead of on my internal hard drive. I change the location of all my songs to the external hard drive and even import any new song there as well. But when I connect my IPod to my computer to update and import my new songs, my computer DOES NOT recognize the IPod. The only way my computer will recognize my IPod is if I disconnect my external drive first and then connect my IPod. But then I cannot import or update my IPod. This is driving me nuts. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
    IPod 20G   Windows XP

Anyone find a solution for this yet??? I'm having a similar problem. I have an external drive but my tunes are on a partitioned drive on the internal. The external is off but when I go to enable disk use it keeps turning it off on me. When I have selected manually sync songs then it tells me that disk cannot be read from or written to. The computer never shows a drive for the ipod. This is really getting on my nerves!

  • Hard drive in Pismo not recognized; is my logic board fried?

Sorry to post another Pismo question so soon, but the Powerbook has me baffled again. Initially, the G3 laptop (actually it is a G4 as I put in the Newer upgrade long ago) had kernel panics and wouldn't boot completely even on the install disks. I tracked that down to bad memory but before I concluded that it was RAM at the source of my troubles, I thought that the problem was a bad hard drive ribbon and connector. I ordered the hard drive cage/ribbon and received it today. In the interim I have been running the Pismo via a firewire drive (and it runs fine), so I took the drive out of its firewire enclosure, put it in the cage, connected the ribbon and installed it in the computer. Flashing question mark on the screen. I removed it and made sure the ribbon was securely attached to both drive and mother board, then attempted to boot up again. Flashing question mark (which I know means no available boot drive). I started up using the install disk, ran disk utility and no drive other than the install disk showed up. I even tried the old cage and ribbon; flashing question mark.
My mind says there are only two possible causes: either the new ribbon/cage is faulty or my logic board is somehow fried, not allowing the disk attached to the ribbon to connect. Am I missing something? Right now I'm about resigned to just using it via a firewire drive, but the challenge to figure out the problem still spurs me, so I come to this great forum seeking any wisdom. Could the problem be anything else than a bad logic board (assuming the new ribbon is OK)? All help is appreciated.
    Thanks, Will

Hey there. I'm trying to draw back my G3-era knowledge but it's taking me a while!
I can't remember if you can access Apple System Profiler from the 10.4 install disk, but if you can, do so with the internal hard drive connected and see what it says for the ATA section.
PowerBook G3s are wonderful computers. I still have mine around although I finally retired it from my desk a while back (it was not as my main computer of course, but usually was used for IRC or Facebook or something like that) because my mom entered the computer world when someone gave her an iMac G3 with 333 whopping MHz! I gave her the RAM modules out of my Wallstreet G3 to get her from 64 to 512 MB and imaged my drive onto hers (to keep from having to redo the lovely XPostFacto 10.4 install) and she used it for around a year, happily, before upgrading to a MacBook Pro. Now that she's not using the iMac, I could steal my RAM (and that 333 MHz CPU card, heh mine's only a 266!) back. :-P
I had one of those SCSI adaptors that turned the odd square plug (can't remember what it was called now) into a normal 25 pin. I left it connected all the time because the screen hinge had failed and it kept the screen at a usable angle. Some may call it "ghetto," but I prefer the term improvisational usage technique.
Anyway, forgive my going offtopic. Lets just hope we can get yours running again!
    Regards,
    -Ryan

You will need to use third-party software to transfer music from your phone to the iTunes Library. I recommend Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac | Macroplant.com.

How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

  • Time machine won't back up since I have restored from time machine following hard drive replacement.  I am being told there is not enough space, however the back up is less than the hard drive size

We recently had the hard drive replaced on our Mac as part of Apple's replacement programme.  Prior to sending it off for repair we did a final Time Machine back up, which was completed successfully.  SInce getting the computer back we restored everything from the backup disk using Time Machine, which all worked fine, however now we are having problems with it completing regular backups.  We receive a message each time telling up that the backup disk doesn't have enough space on it.  It is telling us that it needs in the region of 370gb and only has around 30gb available.  The computer hard drive is in the region of 350gb and the hard drive is a 400gb one.  It is almost as if it is not recognising that the data already on the disk is the back up of this computer and is trying to complete a completely separate back up as opposed to just updating the backup already on the disk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this and therefore could give me some hints on what to do.  I am reluctant to wipe the backup drive and start again, however I would prefer not to have to buy another hard drive if I can avoid it as this one is technically big enough
I look forward to getting some responses

Hi, I never use TM myself.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there.
PS. It's generally recommended a TM drive be at least twice the size of your main drive.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can't doing anything abouty this, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • I just had to have my toshiba laptop hard drive replaced and I am unable to move my itunes library from my ipad back to the laptop.  It says it is linked to another library  and I can only transfer purchased music etc and not the rest of the library.Help!

I have just had my Toshiba laptop hard drive replaced. This has resulted in all previous content held on the laptop to be lost.   I wanted to try and transfer my music library from my ipad to the laptop, but it will not allow me to do so.  The message is that the ipad is linked to another computer and it will only allow the transfer of the items purchased on through the ipad and nothing else.  Does anyone know if the full library can be transferred back to the computer?

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • I just had my hard drive replaced and restored everything from a Time Machine external hard drive backup and now my "note" widgets won't load. Any ideas ?

I just had my hard drive replaced. I restored it using a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive. When I open Dashboard none of my "note" widgets will load. The other widgets open, such as weather, weather radar, calculater, dictionary, stock...  Even the iPhoto Mini widget works, just not the notes ( Sticky Notes and K-Notes ).  Any ideas on how to fix this ?

I did some research and found the solution to my problem. So I hope it's okay to answer my own question.
When you reinstall the OS, your Preferences go back to their default settings. Apparently Preferences is where this widget information is stored. This Preferences folder is located in the user Library folder which is hidden by default. You can access it using "one, or the other" of the following actions.
Action 1:      (1) In the Finder, choose Go > Go To Folder
                         (2) In the Go To Folder dialog, type ~/Library
                         (3) Click Go
                                                          -- OR --
Action 2:     Hold down the option (alt) key when using the Go menu. The Library folder is listed just                            below the Home folder.
After opening the Preferences folder, the file that you want to locate for k-notes is named
    widget-com.rakoth.lichlord.widget.k-notes.plist
After you locate it make note of the byte size of the file. Now, with the Preferences folder still open, open Time Machine and go back in time until you see a big jump in the file size. That will be your uncorrupted plist. Restore it and close Time Machine.
    Then Restart your computer.
After following this procedure I brought up Dashboard and my blank k-notes were now refilled with the previous text and color that occupied them before I had to restore the OS.
This procedure also worked for Sticky notes, which in the Preference folder are named
    widget-com.apple.widget.stickies.plist
