Hard drive replaced w/ Seagate drive -G4 starts up but won't recognize it

Hi,
I'm trying to help out a friend with a 733 MHz G4 that I'm giving to him. I pulled out the hard drive because, while it was working ok, Disk Warrior said that it was too damaged to make repairs. So I found someone at work who had an 80Gg HD Seagate Barricuda that he said worked great but was too small for him.
I popped the damaged HD out and put the Barricuda in. I started up the 733 MHz G4, it chimed up, and displayed the little icon asking for a hard drive. I inserted a Mac OS install disk, and it proceeded to install. When it came to the part of actually assigning a hard drive to install the OS on, nothing showed up. It does not recognize the Barricuda hard drive. So my questions are --
1) how can this mac start up without there being a hard drive?
2) do I need to go back and fidget with the two cables?
3) what else can I do to make this a happy marriage of barricuda meeting G4 - or did I snag the wrong kind of hard drive for this? The cables seemed to fit in perfectly.
Any help is much appreciated!
Sheila

Just because the drive could not be repaired by DiskWarrior does not mean that there is anything PHYSICALLY wrong with it: It might just mean that the Directory is too badly mangled to make sense of.
I am aware that I ended the above sentence with a "dangling participle," a practice to be avoided.
In my many years of this sort of thing I have only ever has one case where a drive was too scrambled for DW but it can happen.
If it were MY G4 tower, I would pull the 80-gig drive out & put the other (damaged) drive back in.
Fire up off the System disk and eradicate erase reformat the old drive & re-install a fresh system on it.
This will verify that the beast is mechanically firing on all cylinders. If your G4 (like mine) has a short ATA cable with TWO connectors make sure that the Bananacuda drive is the ONLY HD in the G4, connected to the LAST connector on the cable, and configured to be the Single or Master....
OR....
LEAVE the old HD, configured as Master, on the end connector and configure the Bananacuda as Slave and plug it into the MIDDLE of the ribbon cable.
If the computer still fails to see the 80-gig seagate drive look for it by booting off DiskWarrior to see if it is actually present on the ATA bus.
I love a mystery.
The drive MAY be NFG, or the cable might be flaky (rare but possible) or simply loose. Make sure the POWER plug is good: try another one.

My external hard drive works on pc but won't even show up on my mac? What can I do?

If it is in the wrong format it must probably still show up though, if your mac does detect it, go to disk utilities> choose the device from the left hand side > go to the "erase" tab and change format to "Mac OS extended (Journaled) then hit "erase".
IMPRTANT! : this will erase ALL of the files on your external hard drive
If this dosent work, make sure your external hard drive's USB port is compatibe with both USB 2.0 and 3.0 and also make sure your mac USB socket isnt damaged either.
    Hope this helped

  • New external hard drives.  LR (4.3) won't recognize them

I replaced my old external hard drives where all of my LR photos go.  They were full. I copied data to new HD's using Carbon Copy Cloner and did all that Matt Kloskowski suggested as far as ejecting drives, renaming new drives, find missing folder etc.  Then I connected new HD and all was good.  Ejected it and connected new back up HD and still good.  Then, I reconnected new HD and LR would not recognize.  All question marks.  Tried reconnecting, renaming, even tried using old external HD and still all question marks. Now what should I do?  Thanks,  Mike

    Hi mcnLR,
I am no reader of Matt Kloskowski, so I do not know his advice.
    Are you on Windows7?
Am I understanding correctly that you have 2 new HDs, one for "working", one for "backup"?
I am at a loss why you want to have both HDs, which are technically different, both recognized by LR as if they were identical.
My usual working with backups is: I have a safeguarded copy elsewhere, and I can copy from there over a file which I lost in my working setup.
If you want to plug either the working HD and the backup HD into LR, and have it recognize both identically, you might get confused if you write xmp back to the files/sidecars.
So my advice would be: have one working copy HD recognized by LR, with one fixed drive letter.
Use your carbon copy software to backup the content of your working HD to the backup HD - the backup-HD having a different drive letter.
Only plug the backup HD into LR if your working drive has died.
And then update the folder location for the different drive letter of the backup-HD.

  • Old folders deleted from hard drive are grayed out but won't delete

Some kind of error occurred in lightroom 5 that caused a folder of photos I had previously imported to be grayed out and have a question mark. To the right where the number of photos shows, it says inval... (invalid?). The usual process for matching up missing photos didn't work and I got error messages.  Finally I removed the folder of photos from the hard drive and copied it to another drive and renamed it. Then I copied it back to the hard drive where I usually store folders. This time the import worked as usual.
However I have a couple of grayed out folders with a question mark and "inval..." that are non-functional and nothing happens when I choose "remove".
How can I get rid of them?

However I have a couple of grayed out folders with a question mark and "inval..." that are non-functional and nothing happens when I choose "remove".
Try rebooting your computer.  In previous instances, that sometimes caused these phantom folders to disappear from Lightroom's folder pane.

  • Dead internal eSATA hard drive - spins and clicks, but won't mount

I'm trying to help a friend whose internal drive died. She has since replaced it in her Powerbook, but would like to salvage the data on the old one.
I got it connected to my laptop via USB, with one of those Newer Tech multi-connectors, but all I get is a cycle of spinning and clicks, which repeats itself without the head actually reading, or mounting the drive's image on the desktop.
I'm not interested in using the drive in the future. I just want to be able to copy the data within it, so I can give it to my friend. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    BK

No Powerbook can use a SATA or eSATA drive internally. The drive is an ATA/IDE (aka PATA) drive. The reason it doesn't read or mount when connected to your laptop, which I hope is a Mac, is that it has failed. If you're connecting it to a Windoze PC laptop, don't: you'll get nowhere that way. Connect it to your G5 instead.
Once you have the bad drive connected to a Mac, download and run the free demo version of any or all of these data recovery utilities:
    Data Rescue
    FileSalvage
    VirtualLab
All three come in demo versions that will show you what the full version could recover before you have to pay for anything.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

Please refer to the help document below for deactivation:

Also, the creative cloud membership can only work on 2 machines. You will receive an error automatically on the third machine.

Hello, I changed my Imac hard drive which no longer worked. I installed a hard drive
Western Digital 500 GB 7200 rpm SATA3 WD5002AALX 32M Black. Sometimes I see the hard disk in the utility on the Starter CD, but access seems very slow. By cons when I want
install OS X 10.4.2 on the hard drive, I do not see the disk. What is the problem?

    Thanks for the help
I started on the installation CD OS X 10.4.2, I used Disk Utility
to partition the disk according to the document that you have proposed. unfortunately
I have not succeeded. When I partition the disk, even if I called it Macintosh HD, it
does not keep the name and it shows disk0s3 instead. I did an erase on disk.
When I mount the disk it tells me that I must repair. When I tried to repair, I got
    the following message:
    Volume check failed
The underflying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
    I also had a message:
    Invalid b-tree node size.
Note: The disc is new, but it has already been formatted on a computer Imac 27 inch 2011 OS X Lion.
I used a USB 2.0 to SATA cable to adjust the formatting.
What to do to fix it?

Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

    Hi greg v.p44270855,
We would love to help. What part are you having trouble with? For starters, please make sure that you're logged in as an administrator, and temporarily disable any antivirus software. If you don't have the Acrobat installer, you can download Acrobat from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.
If you're running into a particular problem with the installation, please provide some specifics about the problem (error messages, operating system and version, and so so).

I replaced the hard drive, motherboard, and battery but now can not restore my Ipod 5th gen?  Error code 1416, any help?

When I did a Google search on "1416 error ipod 5th," there is some discussion that the earlier version of the logic board only accepted 30 and 60 GB drives (or words to that effect), but the later "5.5" version did allow larger capacity drives.  If that info is true, the question is, do you have a compatible combination of logic board and hard drive?

Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro?  From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended.  But how/where?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance
