Hard drive seems to be renamed?

So, I was doing some Safari browsing for the better part of 2 hrs (sucked into Wikipedia for a while). When I exited, I noticed my hard drive icon was moved to the other sideof my screen and now has the name "415263*_". This seems very scary. Should I be freaking out? I did a Virex scan immediately, but nothing came up.
Someone please help! I'm worried that my system has been compromised!
Thanks!

It happens to me sometimes when I double click to slow and then start typing to find a file. Instead of opening the folder (or hard drive), it selects it and makes it editable. Then whatever I was typing becomes the new name.
As for why yours changed to numbers or why the icon moved, I can't explain that. Just out of curiosity, what files does Virex say are suspect (if it lists the file names and locations)?

  • Ibook g4 won't boot, but hard drive seems fine

    I have a ibook g4,800mhz. osx 10.4.8
On start up i get the folder & question mark. I have tried the following.
    1) i booted with an os install disk. disk utilities reported the drive was ok it but couldn't see a disk partition so disk first aid had nothing to do.
    2) next i ran disk warrior which had the same probably, it could see the hard drive, reported that the drive was functioning, but saw no partition.
    3) finally i gave up and reformatted the disk, and re installed an os. this worked for 48 hours at which time the problem came back.
    4) i can put the laptop in firewire mode connect it to a desktop and access the hard drive. I can format the disk using apple disk tools, i can install an new os, but after all this it still won't boot from the internal hd.
    5) I reset the pram. also tried starting up with the option key down .. no hard drive is visible when i do this.
So the hard drive seems to work ok. Two different disk utilities see the hard drive and think its functioning ok. OSx installer runs without complaint, but the &$%! won't boot from the hd.
    Anybody got any suggestions?

...this worked for 48 hours at which time the problem came back...
This is the time period that I was commenting on. If something was used during that time that corrupted the OS, it would cause the situation you are in.
If everything is perfect with the OS then something is wrong with the hard drive or the motherboard's interface to the hard drive.

  • How I can back up my data from macbook pro that its hard drive seems to die soon?

I need your help guys from the whole world.
I am now in Erbil (North Iraq) and there is no apple authorized resellers or anyone who can fix macs, they can destroy them as they try to repair it ( this is what happened      to me recently with My I phone and I pad). So I am left alone to fix it with your global help I hope.
The issue is, I didn't do back up on my mac book pro for over  a year. I woke up 3 days ago, switched my mac and there was this funny pinc ponc noise coming from the lower right hand side of my mac (between track pad and keyboard), the computer was going slow and I wasnt able to do anything even after few restarts. It is always too slow to perform anything and this noise always start after few seconds of starting and keep going. the computer can still function very well on guest account *(safari only) and I don't hear the noise then nor when I press T. But if I try to log in to all my drive or in safe mode I get this noise and none function computer. when I went to disk utility there was message in red to back up my data immediately and take the hard drive to authorized service center.
I checked on internet, you tube  and others..and it seems I have faulty hard drive. Since I am here alone and no service center so I think I will replace it myself. But first thing first i need to back up my precious data. I found few ways of doing this and I wonder if you can give me some tips, advise or any other method to do the back up.
    1) Transfer data on target mode:  I havent done this before but I am thinking to connect my faulty macbook pro to another with firewire, pressing T on the faulty Mac and install Super Duper on the other mac. Then I connect external hard drive to the working mac via USB. And the question is     :      can I transfer the files this way to an external bootable hard drive connected to the working mac     , so the working mac will function as bridge between faulty mac and external hard drive. Also can I do this process through my old none intel based power book(which I am using now)  instead of borrowing macbook from friend?
    2) Buy new hard drive, open my mac and replace the faulty one. then put the faulty one in external inclosure, connect to refurbished mac and transfer data back. Can I do this? will I need to install the mac os from the CD associated with it before I do transfer?
Is there any other way to do this please?

where do I download the superdoper please?
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/superduperdescription.html
    its here:
    Download the free trial now!
This simple software is free and very easy to use, yes, it makes a 100% clone of ALL on your HD, everything.
(assuming its not so dead it wont copy).
you only need the free trial version to clone your HD.
can I download it on guest account? this one I can login and seems to function fine.
Then install same on your guest account, that wouldnt matter, since Superduper clones everything (except the recovery partition which you dont need in your case right now).
LaCie is Seagate (lacie doesnt make HD) , yes, that would be fine,  clone your HD ASAP and hope it works.
there is no software fix for HD hardware failure, ......this is why a backup copy of data is so very important all the time, period.

  • No internal hard drives seem to work! Please help!

    Hello,
I'm really hoping someone can help with this as I am losing my mind! I wanted to upgrade the internal hard drive of my 2009 Macbook Pro from the stock 250GB to a 500GB. The first try was with a Western Digital Scorpio Black (7200 RPM), the second try was with a Hitachi 5400 RPM, and the last try was with a Hitachi 7200 RPM. None of these have worked. I first noticed the problems when trying to perform a backup. Both Time Machine and SuperDuper would fail. When I tried the first drive, the OS loaded fine. But after install, the system lagged really bad. Opening applications would take much longer than they had before and even opening new windows, writing files and such seemed to cause the system to choke. Removing the hard drive and running from an external enclosure produced the same results. The drive checked out in Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. So at this point, I assumed there was something wrong with the drive. Fast forward to the second drive...At first, everything seemed fine except that I was not able to complete a backup via Time Machine or SuperDuper. However, now I was having a rough time even getting the OS installed with the drive in the computer or plugged in via an enclosure. I tried using the restore disks, a retail copy of 10.6, and a disk image of 10.6 as well. On the off chance that the OS did install completely, the system would revert back to its laggy behavior. I just thought I had EXTREMELY bad luck and purchased another drive. Same results across the board.
During attempts at backups, the system would lock up and I would have to to a hard shutdown. After that, Disk Warrior would usually find a boatload of errors to fix. But it would successfully repair.
I should also mention that I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB as well. In fact, I suspected a RAM issue, so I even bought an extra set of a different brand! The first set was from RamJet and the next was Patriot RAM. In addition, I tried using single RAM sticks; one in each bay at different times.
The laptop is at the Apple Store now. But the "genius" thinks it's a bad hard drive! I tried explaining to him that this was the THIRD hard drive to go in and that the one that was in worked perfectly when using it to boot up an iMac. I did ask him to replace the SATA cable as well thinking that maybe something might be wrong with that. But at the same time, the computer had its issues while the hard drive was in an external enclosure as well. Could it be that these newer Macbook Pro's are just really picky about what drives go in? Or am I looking at some other strange problem? Everything was working just fine before the attempted upgrade.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Assuming that you've already tried the brightness controls, you can try an SMC and PRAM resets.

  • My external hard drives seem to slow down my iMac

    Hello,
I've encountered an odd situation in that the external hard drives I use to hold all of my files seem to slow down the performance of my iMac. I have two Lacie 1 tb externals plugged into my 2006 2.0 Ghz iMac with 2 gig of ram. I've had these two externals for about two months and for the same amount of time, any other item (ipod, card reader, thumb drive) I'd plug in would take several min to mount onto my computer. From there, the data transfer from my external or internal hard drive is slightly delayed and slower as well.
I unmounted these externals today and plugged in a thumb drive to test and it immediately mounted to my computer! I never thought an external could effect the mounting of other, smaller, externals!
I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to fix this problem? My itunes music files are stored on my externals and I'm a photographer, so I'd need regular access to my externals to get to my pictures.
Thanks for all your help. I can usually find the answer to my problem by browsing around in discussions, but I find this situation to be a bit of a unique one!

Sorry, It's connected to my iMac via Firewire 400. I have the externals connected to each other via Firewire 800.
In regards to types of files, I have my itunes library, photo (Raw Canon 50d files), Adobe (photoshop, indesign, illustrator) and Word files all on the external. I basically moved everything off my internal and store it all on my external now, so I'm accessing it a lot through the day.
I'm wondering just why you did that. Surely you know that F/W 400 is much slower than your internal HD?
I'd be inclined to move things that involve heavy I/O during editing (photos and videos, especially) back to the internal. I suspect you'll see a large improvement.

  • Faster Hard Drives seem to make a difference

    Hello,
I just swapped out Apple's stock Maxtor 250gig SATA I drive that came with my quad with a Seagate 750gig SATA II drive. Aperture seems a little faster. I don't know if anyone has posted on this but it makes sense. The faster the comp can read in the files the faster it can display them.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    Luke

I have been reviewing my storage needs and thinking about how best to expand. Looks like a sonnet eSATA e4P & Fusion 500P for me, just need to find a good price in the UK. Anyhow i was checking hard drive perfromances/specs and noticed my default drive was specified pretty slowly compared to current options. So i'm also considering changing my boot drive for a raptor 150 and move the old one into the drive enclosure for backup.
One point when comparing, if your stock 250GB was near-full, it will significantly slow down. To be optimal drives should be kept to ~75% capacity or less. I now find that impossible hence i need more giglar blites of space.

  • I have a macbook pro and i put a new hard drive in it but now wont start up but when i firewire it to another mac the hard drive seems to be fine

i have a macbook pro and i put a 500 gb hard drive but know pro wont start up but when i firewire it to another mac the harddrive seems to be fine

When you formatted the drive, before installing OSX, did you click Options on the Partition and select Mac GUID Bootable ?
Just because it mounts as an external does not mean it's a bootable Volume ...

  • New internal hard drives, seems slow with Logic 8, how can i test

    Hi,
I just bought a new internal hard drive, but it seems subtley too slow!,
On a Logic 8 song i'm working on the tracks timing seems slightly off, it's kind of driving me crazy because at times it is subtle, and other times obvious.
and 2 other things, one is an iTunes playback stalled twice, and that's never happened before,
also, when working on a Word doc, the screen was not re-drawing properly. i had to repeatedly reisze the doc window to get it re-draw itself. this has never happened before either.
is there a way to test this new hard drive?,
    thanks

There are though all the ones I've used, TechTool Pro, Disk Utility, Intech Speedtools, none were 'perfect' or as good as the vendor's own utility which runs on Windows.
But you might do something for us - include the drive make/model version, and, do a look up with Google and see if you get any helpful hits.
How you have your system setup, number of drives and organization of files, can also have an impact.
Off hand, WD Caviar 640GB is cheap and fast, or there are some 1TB drives that look good, too.
Drives do break in over a period of days or first week, and it can help to break in and torture, zero the entire drive, run media scan, use a benchmark utility to graph I/O over the full drive.
Check out Barefeats, they do a bit of drive testing benchnmarks and see what they use and results. Or Tom's Hardware.

  • Hard-drive seems to be constantly in use?

    Hello,
I've recently bought the Lenovo Idea Centre K430 and while I have been very pleased with it to date I've noticed that the white hard-drive light on the top of the box is constantly flashing even if I'm not doing much with the computer and I was wondering if this is the norm? If not, what do I need to do to stop it? Is there something running in the background that needs to be switched off for example?
I'd appreciate either confirmation that my PC is running as it should or any suggestions to resolve.
    Many thanks,
    Richard

    Hi,
Thanks for the helpful and prompt response. I've opened up Task Manager and there are a few programs running in the background mainly; Internet Explorer, Microsoft Windows Search Index and Search Filter. I'm not currently installing anything and I'm using Windows Defender which isn't running at the moment either. Perhaps with the particular make of hard-drive it just flashes all of the time and this is normal. It is also quite noisy but it will probably have to be something I will need to get used to unless someone can identify what is causing it to behave like this.
    Thanks

  • My external hard drive seems to have a problem ?

movies played from my my external hard drive lag or either very slow, almost anything i open from my external lags, what does this mean ???but if i transfer them to my laptop and open them they work perfectly ! i tried to repair it but this happened .....

Streaming content from an external HD is always going to be slower than if the content is local on the SSD. Especially if you're using USB2 with hi-def content, it'll be even worse. For example, I had a 176GB copy of a 1080p movie that I tried to stream over USB2 and the movie was unplayable on my machine. It'd show 5-10 seconds of video, buffer, skip 8-10 seconds and then repeat the cycle.
Moving to FireWire 800, Thunderbolt of USB3 will definitely improve (if not completely eliminate) these problems. Otherwise for media that requires constant disk read access, you'll want to run it locally.

  • Hard Drive seems to be full but it really isn't

    Hi all.
My brother's hard drive is having a strange issue. It says it has 111MB of free space, but its a 300GB hard drive with around 120GB of files on it.
Using Whatsize does not reveal any more than the 120GB. There is only one login on the Mac.
Any ideas what this could be?
A screenshot of the issue is here:

    Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Crashed and now "my" hard drive seems to be called MATSHITADVD-R

Computer froze so I forced it to shut down and then upon restart all i had was a grey screen with a folder and flashing question mark. I went to disk utilites to try to repair what went wrong and now it shows my hard drive as being called MATSHITADVD-R any ideas? Is all of my info lost?
    Thanks

Hi mwafle, and a warm welcome to the forums!
That means your Mac isn't seeing the Hard drive at all, most likely dead, they last very few years anymore, sorry.
    That is your CD/DVD Drive.

  • WD external hard drive seems to crash my Mac just by being connected to it

    Is this even possible?
I apologize in advance if the question is too obviously n00b, or if it's been answered (I did search before posting), or if it's in the wrong forum.
I have a brand-new MBP, late 2008, and I was going to use a WD Elements 1.5 TB external drive for backup (Time Machine) and cloning (CCC). After about a month of use, my MBP started developing strange symptoms like some discussed elsewhere on these forums (apps apparently launching but invisible in the Finder, Finder unable to launch, Disk Utility saying my MBP's drive was failing, WD drive randomly disconnecting itself, and much more) and essentially became unusable. Three different Apple Geniuses were unable to help me. The third one was the most helpful and understanding and sent my MBP off to be repaired. I got it back with the message that they couldn't find anything wrong with it either.
They did a clean install of 10.6.2 and I created a new user account. Everything went fine until I tried to migrate some of my files only (no apps) from the WD drive. Then my clean new MBP began exhibiting the same symptoms as before.
So I did another clean install and created another new user account and didn't touch the WD drive. Everything has been running well for about a week now.
To test if the WD drive itself was the problem, I connected it to my family eMac this morning. The eMac (which admittedly isn't all that fast to begin with, of course) immediately began running slower and the WD drive began to randomly eject itself. I disconnected the drive and am sending it back to WD.
I'm just happy to have my MBP up and running again, though the loss of all my backed-up data is hard to take. I have two questions for the group, if you don't mind:
    (1) Is it possible that the WD drive caused all these problems on my poor Macs? I'm going to assume that it is, but I'm curious and would like to understand (briefly) how.
    (2) Is it safe to open and use any of the files I recovered from that drive, or should I just trash them to be on the safe side? I feel extremely snake-bit.
Thank you in advance for reading this, and for responding if you care to!

Those WD drives are junk and do not play well with Macs and most likely did cause all of your problems. Only WD seems to know the real reason why.
Those recovered files should be fine. I would no longer trust that drive with important data.

  • Won't let me copy to hard drive post power surge

Ok, to make a long story short, I hope, I had an electrical fire (everyone's ok) that involved and destroyed my laptop's power cord and as part of that fun I seem to have had a power surge that has reset some of the defaults on my computer but not all. Some of the folders I created prior to the surge are gone, etc. The only real problem is that the permissions on my internal hard drive seem to have been reset. Below are the things it will and will not allow me to do.
-- I cannot copy files from a flash drive, cd or external hard drive to the internal hard drive. I get that circle with a line through it. Clicking and dragging, copy/paste, nothing works.
-- I can move stuff that is already on the internal hard drive from folder to folder.
-- I can save email attachments to the internal hard drive.
-- I can copy stuff from internal the hard drive to a flash drive, cd or external hard drive.
-- I can read the files on flash drives, cds or external hard drives, such as a movie file, just fine, they run without a glitch. The peripherals did not suffer any resets as a result of the fire/power surge. When it happened the computer shut down automatically and I think that saved the accessories from being damaged because the computer is the only thing that showed any changes after it happened.
And before someone asks, yes, I checked, I have 40 GB of HD space so it's not a space issue.
I right clicked on MAC HD and did the Get Info and looked at the details of the permissions on various files and tried shifting some of those around but even though it says Read and Write it still won't let me copy to the internal drive from other sources. Interestingly when I got to the User file it was marked Read Only but changing it to Read Write didn't help. Something I did once worked but then it stopped working so I have no idea what it was. I put everything back the way it was. Could somebody please help me? My computer is old and dieing a slow painful death but if I can make it last a little longer that will make my life so much easier. Please let me know if you need any system info or anything.
    *Thank you!!*
PS. I'm not posting this on the peripheral thread because the problem isn't really the peripherals, it's the system not wanting to play nice with others, so that's why I put this over here.

Hi. It's not a dumb question, cause if it is then my answer is really stupid, what's a repair permission? lol I don't know what that is so I guess the answer is no, though I can guess from the name it's a program to fix permissions if the files get messed up? I knew how to change the permissions in Get Info but past that I was getting into things I don't know so I figured it was time to ask for help or I'd be on here asking how to un-erase a hard drive. jk So how would I do that and is there anything else I should do?
Sorry if my initial post was a bit defensive. I had a moderator give me flak over some minor thing on a post once and I was supremely frustrated with this problem. Sorry if it came out kinda angry. I appreciate any help you can give me.
