Thanks

Well, I had the same situation after upgrading to 10.6 (as if the 10.6 installation wasn't already hard enough). I went poking around Google and I found a forum on the D-Link website with people like us with the same problem.
In two of those forums, I saw some had upgraded their DNS-323 firmware from 1.06/1.07 to 1.08 (beta). Mind you, 1.08 is a BETA and that some people on the D-Link forum had problems after upgrading the firmware. Specifically, issues concerning automatic formats of HDs after the upgrade and others ( I can't remember them all).
I downloaded the 1.08 firmware and upgraded the firmware. However, to ensure that my HDs were not formatted or corrupted by the new firmware, I shut down the DNS-323 and took out the HDs. Then I uploaded the firmware without the HDs. after the firmware upload was successful, I shut down the server, and put the HDs back into the server. The BETA firmware definitely worked for me and I was able to mount my file share.
The only thing that didn't work for me was the mail feature. I put all the correct settings into the mail section to give me daily reports and logs of the server. However, when I tried to send a test message, the server's web administration site timed out on me for five minutes. Although this does not affect the mounted file share (I was able to read and write to my server during the timeout), i cannot get daily logs of my server's activity.

  • I dont have an external hard drive. How do I back up my computer before installing the Snow Leopard?

I am upgrading my computer from leopard to snow leopard. Is it necessary that I back up? I'm afraid I will lose all my data. I dont have an external hard drive. Is there another way to backup? I dont even know how to use Time Machine...
    AGH!! PLEASE HELP!

Go out and buy one. You should have a backup.
To upgrade you don't need a backup, but if the upgrade goes awry then what? You've got nothing but a ocmputer that doesn't work. Now you must erase the drive and restore everything from scratch. And, all your data are gone. Is that all worth the risk?
If you choose not to make a backup then at least do this before installing Snow Leopard:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now, boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and install it.

  • External hard drive/server across machines

    Hi everybody,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, so if not please let me know where you think would be better.
The studio I am working on uses 3 machines:
    1 - MacBook Pro running 10.5.2
    2 - PowerMac G4 running 10.3.9
    3 -
What the boss here would like is an external hard drive or server that can be used as a central location for files that can be accessed by all machines. Ideally, this hard drive/server could also be accessed by the 3 laptops when being used at home or out of the office over WiFi.
What would people suggest is the best way to do this? All ideas and trouble shooting is welcome.
    Thanks

sorry, forgot to add the 3rd machine. It's a Compaq Presario PC running Windows XP.

I have all my movies on an external hard drive.  I want to be able to access them without copying everything to my iTunes.  How can I do this?

I think DebinSC might mean using the movies without copying to the iTunes library?
Maybe the solution is to uncheck this box?
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I accidentally updated iPhoto on my (now) external hard drive and now it won't let me access any of my photos. What can I do?

So, you have two versions of iphoto? One from the old machine and one from the new?
If so, forget about opening with the older version of iPhoto.
    For the newer version:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

can i use Iomega 1TB MiniMax Hard Drive FireWire 800/USB for ipad 2 to access videos without using mac or pc ?

No, you can't connect an external drive to the iPad - the iPad doesn't have a USB or firewire port and the camera connection kit only supports the transfer of photos and videos into the Photos app. There are some wifi-enabled drives that can be used to stream content to the iPad e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite

You can reinstall MS using your install disk(s) and the original registration key(s).

  • Time capsule as an external hard drive/server

I'm thinking about getting a macbook air as a replacement for my aging windows laptop but don't think the storage is enough for me.   The replacement will be my main machine.  I'm wondering whether I can use Time Capsule as a sort of wifi external hard drive?

You can but some care is needed.
    1. The TC has no backup built into it.. ie if the TC is the only place you have these files.. then the TC can easily corrupt itself or wireless will corrupt a file.. which can have big consequences in itunes library for instance.
SO WARNING.. back up of the TC is important..
But the TM application cannot backup network drives.. and where will you back it up to??
    2. The TC is designed for fairly slow disk start up and very quick shut down.. to keep its power demand to a min.. there is no way you can change this.. you might find accessing the TC can be pretty slow.. but then again so is wireless.. do not expect this to be the perfect combo.
    3. As great as it sounds.. a decent size internal drive makes a lot of sense.. and plugging in external drives is a pain on a laptop.. i also get that.. would a 13" MBP be a better option??

  • New Hard Drive- How to upload from iPod Photo without access to old drive

Needed to purchase/install a new hard drive after Windows corruption on my old pc. My iPod Photo is completely backed up with my entire library/playlists, etc. Old music files were copied to my new hard drive but the iTunes application needs to be reloaded. I am hoping there is a way to sync my iPod with the new version of iTunes on my new hard drive and have the iPod used as a backup drive. Everything I read about this suggests I need access to my old hard drive to change settings on the iPod before I will be able to upload to the new software from the iPod. Does anyone know if what I want to do is possible so that I can retain all of my playlists, etc the way they are? Thanks so much.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 and Vista so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • After iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive, after iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive

I was just about to order a photo book, using photos stored on an external hard drive. I organised the book and pressed 'buy'. IPhotos instructed me that I needed to upgrade and so I went on the ASpp store, bought the upgrade and installed as directed. I then used the iPhoto Library upgrader as directed.
After the iPhoto upgrade I can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive. I am able to access the photos stored on my internal hard drive - the remainder (including the photo album) seem to have vanished into thin air.
    Any suggestions please?

What format is the external drive?

  • External Hard Drive can't be opened and alias cannot be deleted or fixed

I've just got a new iMac with Snow Leopard, but my external hard drive won't open.
    1. I have the message *"The alias XXX can't be opened because the original item can't be found"* with the options to delete the alias, fix the alias or OK. I can't delete or fix the alias.
    2. I can see the disk on the Disk Utility, and can verify and repair the disk (which I have done), but cannot verify or repair the Disk Permissions
    3. I can see from get info that of the 1TB capacity, 511GB is used - therefore the files are still on it. I have tried to select new original but am unable to so do as this disk is greyed out in the finder. I have also selected ignore ownership on this volume.
Any suggestions so I can open the external hard drive, or fix the alias?
    Thanks
    Bill

Thanks Dave - I tried that but what happened was that the disk, which was in the left hand finder winder with the other devices turned into a cloud and disappeared when I dragged it out of the finder window.
Any other suggestions? I am keen to be reunited with the files on the external drive
    Thanks
    Bill

  • How do I erase the data from a partioned hard drive.  I've already erased trhe bootcamp drive but I can't erase OSX.  The operating system is Snow Leopard.

How do I securely erase all the data from my hard drive (it has a bootcamp partion which I succesfully erased).  I'm giving my Macbook Pro to my daughter but I want all the data securely gone before I give it to her. Disk Utilities does not allow me to start the erasing process.

You can not erase a drive you are using to boot and run the computer.
You have to boot the computer from a CD/DVD disc, thumb drive or external drive that contains the files need to start the computer and has the Disk Utility program on it.
Tha would be the original system Discs that came with your computer or a CD/DVD disc, external drive or thumb drive you specifically made to do this.
