Hard Drive shutting Down, beeps and fan turns on

Have new Lenovo K100, model 57061334, purchased on TigerDirect.
Suddenly (after about a week of using it), it starts shutting down, beeps, and the internal fan goes on.  Once I was able to restart it right away, but now I can't seem to restart it (if I do, the beep and fan starts).
Help please!
Thanks.

Do you get any specific beep pattern? Like 1-3-3-1? This latter would mean a RAM/memory problem.

External hard drive, shut it down or leave it running 24/7.

    Hi Tom
Yes they do have their own power supply, however no on/off switch.
I don't suppose it will do any damage to leave them on. Seems a bit of a fact to have to unplug them when not in use.
    Thanks again

  • Envy 23 Shut down unexpextedly and wont turn on.

    Hi.
My Envy 23 Just Shut down unexpectedly an hour ago and it wont turn on. I checked the power supply and let it cool for a bit before trying to plug it in again. It still wont work. I was going to assume that the pc overheated but now im starting to get skeptical. I bought this pc about a year ago and this is my second replacement. Im just a young boy and i really dont want to tell my parents that my second pc broke again. Is there any solution to this without telling my parents at all?

Try rebooting it. Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears. This will take 10-20 seconds of holding.

  • I just replaced my hard drive on my imac and now when i turn the computer on the fan is running and slowly gets louder and louder. how do i turn it off?

    thanks.

If your machine was made after 2009 you probably installed th wrong HD. Beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's that had an integrated fan sensor. If you did not use one of these drives then that is the problem. You should contact OWC (www.macsales.com) or visit your local AASP and they will help you select the correct HD to use.

Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • I was surfing online when suddenly my mac just freeze. So i had forced shut down it and turned it on again but then the folder with questionmark icon shows up. And i pressed (option key) to go to the utility but i cant find my startup disk anywhere!

Well, if the internal hard drive  is no longer readable, there's pretty much nothing anyone here can do about it. There are no magic words that will fix a hardware problem.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and have it looked at.

  • My imac shuts down unexpectedly and now a fan is running??

    Hello,
I have been working on my iMac all morning and it shut down twice within a half hour and I had to press the start button on the back to get it going again. Now their is a loud fan running and I have no idea what is going on. Help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi ebeugs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information about resetting the SMC here:

  • Hard drive spins down and have to do a hard reboot

I have an Intel iMac 3.06 (April 2008). Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard especially when I am using itunes (9.02) (downloading) the hard drive spins down for no reason at all.The energy settings are fine. The only option I have is to hold the power button down for 5 sec and reboot when it happens. I know this has been an issue with other intel iMacs but when the "fix" for other machines was available it said my machine did not need it. I beg to differ. This is getting very annoying as I am sure it is not doing the hard drive any good having to hard reboot all the time.
I have tried the power management reset which has not resolved the problem.

    Hi David
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    1. In the Energy Saver preference try setting Computer sleep: to "Never" and make sure the the box "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is unchecked.
    2. Try resetting the System Management Controller as described in the article below.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
Now then if you are still having a problem you might also:
    1. Use the Restore Default button on the Energy Saver preference panel and then reselect your sleep settings.
    or
    2. Go to: Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration and trash the "com.apple.PowerManagement.plist" which also restore's the Energy Saver preference to default, then go back to the Energy Saver preference and reselect your sleep settings.

How long are you leaving it on the charger?
Are you connecting it directly to an electrical outlet or trying to charge via USB?  USB may not provide enough power to adequately charge the device if the battery is that low.
If none of that helps, then the only option would be a warranty replacement as either the battery or system board is bad.

Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.
