Hard Drive Space goes down when I turn on AirPort and go online.

So, when I turn the AirPort on on my MacBook Pro you can see the hard drive space go down on the bottom of a finder window. When I turn AirPort off the the GB available on the hard drive stays the same. I'm not downloading anything. that I know of. Is some virus downloading in the background that I can't control? I did a full scan with VirusBarrier Express and it says that there are no infected files on the computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Launch the Console utility and look in the "All Messages" category for repeated messages. If you see such messages but you don't understand what they mean, copy a few of them and paste them into a reply to this thread.

That's extremely doubtful.

I noticed that you responded to a very old thread about the split keyboard that I was in a couple of years ago and you asked this question about Skype and the spli keyboard.
I Googled the question and the very first thing that I found form the Skype community was the recommendation to disable the split keyboard or just not use it, like I already stated.

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks my Interface and hard drive are shutting down when Mac put to sleep

    Hi,
Since upgrading to Mavericks, when I put my Mac to sleep both my audio interface and my time machine hard drive are put to sleep also. Effectively making it so that when I start up my macbook again it means removing both the aforesaid from the usb outlets and putting them in again so that the mac recognises them.
This means two things. First of all all my time machine backups fail that are attempted whist the mac is put to sleep, whereas before they succesfully ran. It also means that my audio interface does'nt work and has to be re-set.
Anybody have the same kind of USB / Sleep issues?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • IMac hard drive keeps going down and now will not boot up.

This is my first post here so I hope I am in the correct area. I recently purchased a iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM. It ran well at first but now I keep getting errors that say "There has been a problem with your system, you must turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button on the back of the panel". This has been happening more and more often.
I took it to a local Apple auth repair shop. The guy looked at it for 10 minutes, said everything is fine and sent me home.
Now when I turn the computer on all I get is a blank white screen that never changes.
I just switched from PCs to Macs, I have to say that I am more then a little frustrated with how poor the computer has been. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do now. I do have the Applecare for another 26 months. Thank you.

"There has been a problem with your system, you must turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button on the back of the panel".
This means Mac OS has crashed. Mac OS shouldn't crash too often. You should give applecare a call. They'll probably tell you to re-install the OS.

  • Final cut version 10.0.6 crashes every time I put my hard drive in... when it's already in and I click on final cut, it opens for a few seconds, then 'quits unexpectedly'

Someone please help me, trying to edit a project for college and I literally can't. I don't understand why it's not working, I've been on utilities and checked the hard drive and there's nothing wrong with it and I've made sure there is enough space on the drive.

Have you tried trashing the preferences?
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • The screen on my iPad 2 goes white when I turn it on and black when I turn it off.

I've tried pressing the power button to reset it but nothing shows up.
The screen occasionally goes white as if I received a notification supposedly on my lock screen. Of course, it's just white this time.
I've also tried plugging it in but nothing works either. So I don't think it's a power problem.
I tried to plug it into the computer and bring up iTunes and checked to see it wasn't a storage problem either.
I can't back anything up since there isn't one on my computer and I don't have enough space on my hard drive to back it up.
I've had this iPad for around three years though and it's still in good shape.

To reset your iPad you have to push the Home and ON/OFF buttons at the same time.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds). No data will be lost.
    Try that.

Here are step by step instructions with pictures on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • Firefox eventually consumes all available hard drive space while running

I have 1-2 GB available on my hard drive. When I leave Firefox running for a while (a few hours to a few days, not sure what triggers this behavior), my available hard drive space goes down and down until it gets down to 0. If I quit Firefox, the hard drive space frees up.
I always have multiple windows and tabs open. I'd rather not quit Firefox ever, but I have to to get my HD space back. Sometimes it doesn't seem to happen for a long time, and then it starts happening. I've been rebooting about weekly recently and it hasn't helped any.

I would also have assumed it was just variations in VM usage & application or system memory usage - except that it may show, say, 300 MB available AFTER rebooting, and then, without my launching any applications or using the computer, just immediately rebooting a second time, show 2 GB available.... so somehow the space available isn't be allocated properly it seems to me...
I was also afraid that I was running with too little available space - but have been doing so for months now without these problems. I've got a lot of large video files on the drive, no other drive available to transfer them to, no $$ right now for purchases... and didn't want to delete the videos. I need to transfer more to CD/DVD's but have done all the 'easy' ones that are less than 700 MB already, and have to either waste DVD's or take the time to convert them to versions that will allow the DVD to play on TV also - something I haven't tried yet and gather takes a bit of time. So I've been running along with the drive pretty full.
I would really like to know how to find any 'junk files' like temp files, any duplicates, etc that can be safely deleted, but also not sure how to do that on a mac? So there's this issue, and also the first paragraph, e.g., that it seems to me that somehow the space available allocation isn't being properly shown - is there some way I can check that, find out what is using up the space?

  • Quicktime Movies that Open in Safari eat up hard drive space. Howto Delete?

I have a Mac Book Pro. The hard drive space is minimal as you probably know. Whenever I open up a Quicktime Movie in Safari the movie will open in a new Safari window. Some of the movies are rather large trailers and what not. I notice that my hard drive space goes down with each movie I open. Where are these movies saved? How do i clear up this space after i'm done watching? I hate needing to delete other stuff to open up quicktime movies.

If you've set the cache to 100 MB's that all QuickTime will use.
You're going to have much bigger issues with such little free space on your drive. Why not buy a cheap external drive and move large folders like Music, Movies and Pictures to it.
iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie can all store their files on external drives.

  • Hard drive space literally disappearing while I watch...

    Hi there-
I'm wondering what is going on... I can literally watch my hard drive space tick down to nothing. I keep clearing and seconds later it starts ticking down again to nothing until everything is unable to run.
Where should I start with this?
    Thanks in advance!
    --Jeff

    Hi Allan-
Hard to say what the free space was... It literally changed every couple of seconds until I had nothing left. (ZERO).
I cleared my iTunes library to give it about 40 gb of space - and it's doing okay now - or so it seems.
I have 3.5 GB of RAMM (physical) in the machine.
    Weird... Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Can you share an external hard drive over a network when your Apple Airport Extreme is in bridge mode?

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?  I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive.  I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear.  I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question.  I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked.  I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think there is some confusion in this thread..
If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.
is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?
Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
    Service: SMB
    Type: TCP
    Server IP: xx.x.x.x
    Port Start: 445
    Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.

  • How to Reclaim Hard Drive Space

    Hi there,
I have deleted several GB of messages, folder by folder from Entourage as I have the complete set in Mail. However, I had restarted my iMac and there seems to be too small amount of hard drive space available after this delete has been completed. I don't see anything left in the Entourage folders, nor in the Trash on the dock. So, where else can I check to reclaim the hard drive space? I'm currently showing 140 GB and there should be around 155 GB free.
    Advice much appreciated. Thank you!

  • I had no hard drive space on my computer when I synced- Lost alot of info

While syncing my Iphone 4 a while back, I stupidly ignored a warning that said that I did not have enough hard drive space on my computer. It said that some of my info will be lost. So I did it anyway. When it was completed about the only thing that made the sync was my contacts. Everything else was gone, apps, music, photos. I manually installed music & photos but my text messages did not come back. Someone told me to back it up from an earlier backup which I did find in my Itunes folder but I have been kinda timid about doing it. Should I rename this back up (or Iphone) Or what the **** do I do to get back my older text messages that go all the way back to my first Iphone from June 2007?? Help..

    Welcome to the discussions!
463GB sounds about right for "backup" space on the 500GB TC disk. Time Capsule usually "reserves" about 8-10% for system operations, etc. On a 1TB disk, the usable space on my Time Capsule is about 928GB.
If the Time Machine is not backing up to the TC, try resetting as follows:
Open System Preferences and click on Time Capsule. You will need to select the disk that you want to use and click Use for Backups. This should get things going again.
If no luck, then go Hard Drive > Library > Preferences and delete the com.apple.timemachine.plist file and start the process above again.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.
