Hard drive specs for Pismo?

Hi I would like to upgrade my Pismo with a new HD.
I just wanted to check with the experts that I know what specs to look for.
So, as long as its an IDE laptop drive thats 9.5mm tall I'm ok. Is this correct?
Thanks!

Steven,
Yes, Tiger is very compatible with the Pismo and the ideal version of OSX for this machine. Please limit yourself to an HD no larger than 128GB; the BootROM in these older powerbooks are unable to "see" any HD space beyond this limit.
I would generally avoid the Seagate Momentous HDs; there has been a higher than normal failure of this manufacturer's HD in the MacBooks. Although the MacBook uses the SATA HDs and not the ATA/IDE (PATA) used in the non-Intel powerbooks, and the design may be somewhat different, it makes sense just to select another brand.
If absolute speed is a high priority, then go with the 7200rpms; otherwise, I would just buy the 5400rpm drive. The average person, and I include myself, will notice little if any difference.
Other than what I have mentioned, just pick an HD and go with it.

  • Hard drive specs for Time Machine backup

My LaCie external HD has died an ugly death.  So I am in the market for a new drive to use as my Time Machine backup.
I am looking at two Western Digital drives.  One has NTFS file system, the other HFS+.  Does this make a difference in terms of compatibility with my iMac and Time Machine?
I am currently running OS X 10.8.5. but I may upgrade to Mavericks 10.9.  Does that influence this?

Thank you for your quick answer to my question.  One other question:
These hard drives all have usb 3.0 connections.  My iMac has USB 2.0 which will work but is much slower.  It also has a Thunderbolt port and a Firewire 800.  Do you know if are there adapters that allow the usb3.0 to connect to either the Thunderbolt or Firewire ports?

  • Hard Drive Specs for Thinkpad R51 - namely drive height please?

I have a ThinkPad R51 which I love. I run Linux Mint Maya edition. It has been a faithful laptop for me for several years.
My Harddrive apparently is failing - as it makes loud squeels when I try to run the system. I have not been successful in getting my data off the drive - since I can barely load the OS right now. (Right now I can't load it at all)
My old HD is a 30GB Toshiba MK3021GAS.
What is the DRIVE HEIGHT that I need to search for in getting a new HD?
I could live with even a 10 GB drive to get going again - can anyone point me to anything REALLY inexpensive? (I have only $10 today - and maybe $20 on Friday.)
I have a CD of Linux WattOS R6, which I could boot from. However, it doesn't show me the HD when I boot from the CD. Is there any way I can save my data from my HD? I could surive with extracting just a few hundred MB of files. It failed when I was tryihng to copy to a USB Stick this morning.
    Thank you in advance.
(I'm writing from my antique iBook G4, which is limping along on a failing HD itself.)

    Welcome to the forum!
Your machine will be able to use a SATA III drive, but it will be locked to SATA I speeds unless you
install a modded (non-Lenovo) BIOS that enables SATA II speeds.
As for a 1TB drive, as long as it's 2.5"/9.5mm laptop format, no issues there.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Maximum hard drive size for 350 MHz slot loading?

    Hello,
What is the maximum hard drive size for a 350 MHz slot loading imac?
I am aware of a 128 GB limit on imacs. Does the 128 GB hard drive limit apply to all imac CRTs or just the earlier models?
Here are the specs of my imac:
    Blueberry 350 MHz
    Slot loading CD-ROM drive,
    6 GB hard drive
Is the maximum hard drive size limit of 127GB apply to this particular model?
    Thanks

Yes, the last CRT iMac was in 2001. The first machines with built-in greater than 127 GB support were released in June 2002, as this article explains:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
So all CRT iMacs have that limiation.

The 8 GB limit is explained here:

  • Solid State Hard Drive Replacement For HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j053cl?

    Hello there,
I want to swap out my current 1TB harddrive from my year-and-a-half old HP ENVY with a 500 GB solid state harddrive that I just purchased from Amazon.
    Two questions:
    1) Is this solid state harddrive compatiable with my computer (specs below)?
    2) I want to reinstall windows onto the solid state harddrive after I install it (assuming its compatable).  How can I go about putting Windows 8 on a bootable usb drive to do this?  The computer does not have an optical drive and I don't have an external optical drive, so installing Windows via bootable usb is my only option.
I'm aware I can "clone" my PC onto the external harddrive if I wish, but I'd rather do a clean install if I can.
    Computer Specs:
    HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j053cl
    Product: E0K05UA#ABA
    Solid State Hard Drive Specs:
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OBRE5UE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Please let me know any advice you may have.  Also, please feel free to ask any questions - hopefully I provided enough details.

Windows 8.1 has a built-in tool to make a recovery usb drive:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-usb-recovery-drive
The HP Backup and Recovery app can also do it. This is a factory clean install image and any data and programs you have added will be lost. If you have an external hard drive you can also do a backup with Windows File History. Then, add the backed up files to the factory install. You can also use File History to make a system image type backup and restore it to the new drive using a repair disk but this is virtually the same as a clone, which you said you do not want.
    Manual
Your service manual linked above. See page 47.
The Evo 850 is the best SSD on the market in my humble opinion and will work just fine for you.

Possibly by using an Airport Express, but depends on what type of port connection the printer requires.

My itunes library was on my PC.  About two years ago I switched it to my Seagate server/hardrive. (itunes-preferences-advanced-change library). Last summer (2012) I bought a macbook, which seems to access the seagate server hard drive fine for word docs, excel spreadsheets, etc. It also seems to have started its own library which is not complete. My PC died this summer (I still have it though).
Now when syncing any of the multiple devices (ipods, ipads, iphones) that we have with my mac book, itunes states that "an error occurred" or the "app cannot be found".  Itunes wants me to erase the device and sync with my macbook. The message "The iPhone “Renee’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library on “Renee PC”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."appears.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Apple TV & Time Capsule's Hard Drive Used for iTunes Media Only !

I would like to use the Time Capsule Hard Drive just for my iTunes. Not Time Machine. Time Capsule will be my Wireless Base Station (router) as well. But I'm going to plug my Mac Mini into the Time Capsule via Gigabit Ethernet. Will this work & how well (fast) will it stream the media from my iTunes to the Apple TV? I'm not synching any files on the Apple TV's Hard Drive. All Video & Music will be streaming! I know this is not what Time Capsule was intended for, but will it work & again, how well will it stream ? Is there a downside to setting it up this way ? Also, I'm not buying any Movies from the iTunes store. Thanks in advance!

OK, so having my Mac & TC hardwired by Ethernet, is like having the Hard Drive inside the TC hard wired to my Mac? Correct ? I'm sorry to repeat myself but I'm just trying to understand all this. I'm bad with Networking! So you think I should be streaming OK even with watching a movie I have in iTunes (which lives on the TC Internal Hard Drive) on my Apple TV? My Apple TV will be used Wirelessly. No Ethernet to Apple TV. Again, I appreciate the help. I don't want to buy it & find I can't do what I want. B&H in NY have the older TC 500 GB Model for $199.95 And I have a crappy router currently. So I figure I can kill 2 birds with one stone.( I love Birds. It's just an expression! If it works, it would be ideal for my situation.

Trying to copy ANY file from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive spins for 45 minutes then fails. I hate this computer and WISH I never would have wasted my money. Any ideas? WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Worst computer I have EVER owned, crashes non-stop, constantly freezes, and seems like EVERY operation is more complicated with this thing. Literally, my 1997 Compaq was FAR MORE reliable and user friendly.

This is one of the messages I keep getting; The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in -- File Whatever -- can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)
I have copied things to the hard drive in the past, but it has always been incredibly slow, and now just seems to freeze and fail

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

I see 10.6.3 in your profile---is tthat what you are trying to load? If so, it won't work. No PowerPC Mac like your G5 can run a Mac OS version higher than 10.5.8
