Hard drive toshiba & Mavericks

I had a problem with my STOR.E BASICS 2.5 1TB Toshiba hard drive. I formatted in exFat format for using it both in Mac and Windows and I put on it all my files and everything went good. I ejected and reconnected the drive many times, because I knew there were some problems with Mavericks running hard drives.
Suddendly today I connected the drive and my MacBook doesn't detected it nor in the Devices window nor in the Utility Disk. I say it again: the hard disk worked fine, but SUDDENDLY It doesn't anymore. I had so MANY IMPORTANT files on it for my work.
Also I noticed on the Console this message when I connected the hard disk
10/11/13 04:06:59,000 kernel[0]: USBMSC Identifier (non-unique): 2222391176CF 0x480 0xa009 0x3712, 2
I have a MacBook 13'' aluminium late 2008 with OS X Mavericks on it (I didn't have any problems with this OS on my machine, until now).
What can I for the data on the hard disk and to make it works again ('cause I bought it just 3 days ago -.-')?

It sounds like your drive has died.
On rare occasions when Disk Utility cannot fix a drive, TechTool might be able to. Techtool Pro 7
If not, then I'd return the drive for a refund.
If I have a really important file, I also back it up to Dropbox or iCloud.

    You need only post once.
More information would help.  The simplest answer is drag the files from the old drive to the iTunes window when you have the application open, or the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.  If you mean the whole library that is a different answer.

Justin, your new HD needs to be formatted for Time Machine in Mac OSX Extended Journaled.
    peter915
Seagate backup plus all the way.  It works on both Windows and Mavericks . Download Paragon NTFS driver
.....Peter, incorrect, Time Machine cannot communicate THRU Paragon, it has to be Mac OSX Ext. Journaled formatted,
    1. There is no such entity as "backup plus", its just a mfg. name given to a HD, it doesnt designate anything.
Terms such as:    "WD Passport, Expansion drive, Seagate Backup Plus, PC hard drive, Mac hard drive, Free agent, backup drive, Passport plus, Elements, Toshiba Canvio, Slim, ultraslim, pocket drive, Touro" etc. etc. ........all these terms,...they dont designate or mean anything.
    2. Any HD will work with PC or Mac
    3. Paragon is for use with a NTFS drive for use with a Mac to communicate with a PC NTFS formatted HD....., not however for Time Machine to do a backup.
    justineppie
For using your new HD for Time machine format it ..... >
    Go to .... > Finder > Go >  Utilities > DISK UTILITY
    enter DISK UTILITY
Format (erase) it in "mac osx Extended journaled"
see from mine below, HD on left selected,   .......ERASE tab highlighted.... and middle right roughly, it says "MAC OSX EXTENDED JOURNALED"
thats the format,  but yours may be different of course
bottom right ERASE tab lets you erase/ FORMAT your external as you like (remember this erases all data ON THE HD)
highlighted in RED   Erase.......format (middle) ...........erase ACTION to Erase/Format (bottom)
To show your HD on your desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • Installed new hard drive, formatted, mavericks won't install, says need 2GB or more memory, I have 8GB memory

I have two 13" Macbook pros, #1 has 2GB memory and #2 has 8GB memory. I installed a new 1TB SSHD hard drive in Mac #2. I downloaded OS X Marericks to Mac #1 and made a bootable USB. I put the USB drive into Mac #2, hold down the option key and start up. My install Mavericks usb comes up and i click on it, it brings up the next window properly and i go to disk utilities and formated the new hard drive properly. I than click on install OS X Marericks, the next window comes up and I click on continue. The next window comes up, and instead of being able to click continue again, there is a message that says OS X Mavericks requires 2GB memory or greater and a button to click that says Quit. This is the Mac that has 8GB memory ???????
I put the bootable OS XMavericks USB in Mac #1 with only 2GB memory and it works fine. Both Macs are mid 2009 and both work fine.
Anyone have a clue to what the problem may be??

Could be Apple is locking the Mavericks install to the system it is downloaded TO. Not sure as I only have one Mac that has Mavericks installed and I have no desire to install it on my Mini.
Why not just download Mavericks to the other Mac?

"Photos" won't open my iPhoto library. Ideas for how to import that iPhoto Library into Photos?
What is the file system of the external drive, and how is the drive connected?  DO you get an error message? If yes, which message?
You can only open a library on a directly connected drive, formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).  If the drive is correctly formatted, hold down the alt/options key while you are launching photos, and then select your library from the Library Chooser Panel.
If the library is not listed in the panel, use the "Other Library" button.

Handycam won't power up. Removed hard drive and hooked it up with a usb adapter to a laptop. Drive not shown in my computer. I found drivers for the adapter and toshiba hard drive but hard drive is not found.

    Hi newbie-515,
Unfortunately, the failure code for the hard drive is fortelling you of what is to come. In my opinion I would address the solution by the following specific actions:
1: Back up any data that can be accessed from the original drive, onto an external hard drive. To minimize the risk of losing any information.
2: Replace the failing hard drive, before it gets to the point of complete failure. This may also prevent loss of personal data.
and 3: Decide whether you want to upgrade/restore Microsoft Windows 7 onto the pc. That particular pc has current drivers available online at HP Support for the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.
Once this has been completed, then you can recover any personal data that was backed up to the external hard drive, onto the newly installed hard drive.

  • External hard drive causes Mavericks to freeze

When connecting an external hard drive Mavericks just freeze, and the only thing I can do is to do a force shutdown. The external drives are Western Digital (USB 2.0) and LaCie (Firewire 800), connected to a MBP mid 2007 4 GB RAM running OS X 10.9.5. I did a clean install of Mavericks.
I've tried to repair permissions but that didn't do the trick.
I'm totally lost here, don't know what to do, so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks.

An Apple Hardware Test may provide a clue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.
In any event an appointment at an Apple store genius bar may be the best option.   The diagnosis will be free regardless of the age of the MBP.  You will need to bring the external HDDs with you.
    Ciao.

  • Formatting external WD hard drives for Mavericks

    Hello all.
I have just purchased a WD external hard drive and need to format it for my newly updated MacPro Mavericks OS.
I have visited their website but the don't have the correct installation area to select to format it. Their latest version is for the OSX 10.8.
I tried following those instructions just to try out. In Disk Utility I select the correct information and then press 'apply'.
A wonder pops up and says Partition Failed. Couldn't unmount disk.
    Any help and advice please?

    Hello Baltwo.
Please accept my apologies, but I have managed to reformat the HD!!
Stupid me had unknowingly left open a file that came with the HD, thus preventing any formatting from happening.
I apologise for wasting your time.
    Hopefully all will be well.
    Many thanks,

  • My hard drive crashed, Mavericks fault??

Hi! I have never had a hard drive problem, much less any other problem, before today. I installed Mavericks last night and today while using it, my entire computer froze. After I rebooted it I got the white screen but instead of an apple it was a circle with a slanted line through it. I took it to the apple store within an hour and they told me the hard drive was broken and I need a new one. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had the same issue with Mavericks OS. It was not my hard drive's fault (the HD was clean with almost no files or installed programs). After the upgrade to Marvericks, my Mac got a gray screen with prohibitory sign (no Apple logo whenever I turn on the power button) and the computer failed to boot. So I would not always blame on the hard drive because there are definitely several cases where the upgrade to Mavericks can result losing all files and getting stuck with Gray Screen of Death. Therefore, I'd rather stay with Mountain Lion OS for the sake of my recovered files.

  • Does iBook Hard Drive: Toshiba MK4025GAS have shock protection?

does the Toshiba MK4025GAS hard drive have the thing where, if you move the computer, the drive mounts and stops spinning to prevent damage?
oh yeah, this is the drive in my ibook g4.

Hey LLL&D and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
does the Toshiba MK4025GAS hard drive have the thing where, if you move the computer, the drive mounts and stops spinning to prevent damage
This is from a post by simie in macrumors.com:
"SMS only exists on iBooks built after July 26, 2005. These iBooks are either 1.33GHz or 1.42GHz. All 1.42GHz iBooks have SMS. Only 1.33 GHz iBooks with a scrolling trackpad, 512MB RAM (stock), and 40GB HDD (stock) have SMS."
And an explanation of how it works by mkrishnan Demi-God (Moderator) in mac-forums.com:
"Well...there are two things. There's the motion sensor. But the hard drive itself is just a normal hard drive. All hard drives can be commanded to "park" their read/write heads. A hard disk works by a magnetic probe/sensor floating over the disk as the disk spins. It can read the HD by reading the magnetic state of the block underneath it, and when a potential is applied, it can change the magnetic state.
Anyway, hard drives often get damaged because this head crashes into the disk and causes physical damage and/or misaligns itself. Parking essentially pulls the head out of the way so this can't happen as easily.
When the motion sensor detects the motion, the software or motherboard or whatever commands the disk to park, and it does. But the hard disk unit itself is identical to any other 2.5" hard disk, and it's mounted in the same way"
I also wondered about this and knew it was in the later iBooks but wasn't sure which ones.

I recently installed a 2nd hard drive, it shows on the desktop I installed an earlier version OS and would like to use it. Problem is when I go to start up disc to select the 2nd drive all I am seeing is the original drive, I am obviously doing/done something wrong. Can anyone help please?

Thanks Allan but I dont understand, if I plug my external drive in to USB I am able to boot from it using a very early OSX version, it shows up in the start up disc too, the disc I am trying to boot from is in bay 2 on my mac, as I said it is showing up on the desktop...

  • Replaced hard drive: Toshiba Satellite L505 -still getting error message

Replaced the hard drive but still getting this message:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
No boot able device --insert boot disk and press any key
Anybody have any suggestions as to why I'm still getting this. I don't have a boot disk - none came with my laptop.

    The model is Satellite L505D-GS600
However I think I figured out the problem (one of those DUH moments).
For the initial error, I had problems with my hard drive. I was told it was mechanical and but the hard drive was not corrupt. I was hoping to recover my files. In any event, I did purchase another hard drive and realized after posting the question that I needed the recovery disk in order for it to work. I don't have this disk so I've got to order one. However, if I'm wrong please let me know. Also, I have not made any changes other than the new hard drive. Thank you for your reply.

    Jayden:
Here are some directions for formatting and partitioning a HDD:
    Partitioning a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel.
Select # of partition in pulldown menu above Volume diagram.
Select 1 partition at a time and resize. (you can type size in the size field in main pane).
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select each volume, in turn, under Manufacturer ID.
    Select on Security Options button.
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Quit Disk Utility.
Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery has some hints on partitioning.
Please don't hesitate to post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks, I can't connect to my external Seagate hard drive. How to I fix this??????

I have two Seagate hard drives that were working fine for a couple years until I upgraded to Mavericks. They connect via USB and never show up in Finder.

I tried to connect a Samsung hard drive. Before Mavericks it was working fine. Now it won't appear in Finder and it can't be mounted in Disk Utility. As with previous issues I reported concerning iOS 7 and Mavericks, I wrote in this forum, but Apple never reacts. People are trying to help each other with workarounds, which is great, but the core issue isn't solved by Apple. It seems after Steve Jobs they're not concerned about quality that much anymore. The fact that I can't use a very common Samsung external hard drive on Mavericks is just way beyond deplorable. And what did I get in return? iBooks?
