Hard Drive Troubles

Hi guys,
I'm having hard drive troubles.. here's my issue:
I have 2 IDE 120gig hard drives (master slave) one I have as storage, the other I have installed Windows. Now.. my third hard drive is a SATA Raptor.
My problem is the 2 IDE drives work fine, no problems. The Raptor I can't get into (which makes it difficult to get into my very important data!) it does not show up under my computer. It does, however, show up in the Computer Management >Status is healthy active.
I need help guys.  I don't know what to do. I can't reformat because I need that data. Any help is appreciated.
The rest of my specs: amd 64 K8n Neo2 platinum edition, windows xp pro, 500wattpsu
Thanks .

Strange that the Raptor is marked active. That's only allowed on MBR disks (system or boot disks) - did the Raptor have an OS installation before? It's like trying to reassign the C drive letter - you can't do it as long as the partition is active.
When you right-click on the disk in disk management, do you get a "mark disk as active" option and if so can you deselect this so that it's no longer active? (If so and if you get warnings about possible data loss then best not do it unless you have a backup because I'm guessing here and haven't done this myself.)
If you can turn off the active partition marking  then I expect you'll be free to change the drive letter.

  • External Hard Drive troubles

I am having trouble with my external hard drive.
after formatting it to mac os x  I can no longer find it on the computer. when i plug it is nothing happens and it cant be found in the disk utility either. after I formatted it it could be found but now it cant at all.

I had the same problem... But my computer ddidn't recognize my ipod either (when plugged in through the firewire port). At first it would work sporadically, then it stopped working at all.
My guess is that your Firewire ports are starting to (or have already) failed. This is what happened to my computer (of course it out of Applecare, and it cost $400 to replace the motherboard). It also happened to my parents flat panel iMac (though fortunately they were still under Applecare).
Does the device mount to other computers? I would check... But honestly, I think it is the ports When I called and talked to Apple this seemed to be a common problem.
Wanted to add... Power was always going through the firewire ports, just not data. For example, I could charge my ipods through the firewire ports, just not connect to transfer data.

  • MacMini hard drive troubles

Have a macmini 1.66, standard config, OSX 10.6.
Few days ago it became nonresponsive so I restarted and the troubles start. It wouldnt boot (stack at grey screen with spinning mark).
I managed to boot from external hdd backup and save data, while hdd was showing some errors. Reformated disk, SMART is verified, everything seems fine, installed OS again, but it just doesnt work well, slowdowns, file transfer errors etc.
Since my DVD died, I couldn boot apple diagnostic tools, but diskutil says everything is ok.
So, is this drive dead or what? (Apple repair store is nowhere near)
    Thanx,
    V

The hard drive and the DVD drive share the same connection to the logic board. It is possible that the two problems are related.
Passing the SMART test does not prove that the hard drive is OK. SMART can predict perhaps 50% of drive failures, but not all drive failures.
I think the best (cheapest, easiest, and least risky) approach would be to use an external hard drive to boot your mini from now on. With the Intel Mini you can boot with either a USB or Firewire external hard drive. My preference would be to use a firewire hard drive.
The external boot drive needs to be formatted with the GUID partion map to boot an Intel Mini.

  • Hard Drive Trouble on New MacPro

Hello I have had my MacPro desktop for about 4 days now and am having some problems.
There is a 250 gb harddrive in my system and I when I get info the capacity shows as 232.57. I could have sworn it used to say 250gb.
Also on my desktop when I select view options and select "show item info" so it displays the hard drive info with the name it reads:
    232.57 GB,....14 GB free
The useful info is missing, I thought it was just truncated but who would care to see how much is remaining after the decimal. However, when I put in a custom desktop icon the information was back to: 232.57 GB, 219.25 free. I thought the problem was partly fixed but now it is displaying strangely again.
When I was installing photoshop it said I only had 4gb available on this drive.
Could someone please help me as to why this information is not displaying properly.
    Thanks

Thanks for the replies... I actually have the font size the smallest it goes. This info used to show up properly (I know that for sure). Like I mentioned earlier when I changed the icon to a custom one (cmd + I and paste the image on top of the previous icon in) The info returned to displaying properly, then after a few minutes it returned back to this "corrupted" state.
I have tried changing the icon again, toggle show file info on and off, restarting, adjusting the font size and even went to the extreme measures of reinstalling the OS sine this computer is still pretty empty being so new. Perhaps I am missing something here but this has me confused.
    Thanks

  • PowerMac G3 Blue & White Hard Drive Trouble/Help Requested

    Hey all,
I work for a small IT/computer repair company. We recently got in a PowerMac G3 Blue & White (300 MHz; 512K cache; 64 MB SDRAM) which has what appears to be a bad hard drive.
(Upon boot, it comes up with a flashing disk/question mark and you can hear the drive making noises it shouldn't be/spinning up and down/etc.). I've tried booting with the OS CD (8.5.1) in the drive and get a bit further, but it complains of an unimplemented trap, and if I try holding down C to boot up, it starts to load, but then the screen flashes and it eventually locks up (but without the hard drive connected at all doesn't even get that far; just a gray screen).
I've done some research and think my first step should be to replace the hard drive (though if that's not the case, I'd appreciate some insight). I haven't fixed many Macs before, though, so I still have several questions:
1.) The drive that came with the machine is a 6 GB IBM connected to the mainboard IDE interface. It lists it as having Apple HDD Firmware. Is this firmware required on any drive I'd have to get to work with this machine, or can I go with any IDE drive and not worry about it like with PC's (I'm going to stay as small as I can, but with newer drives, that's probably still a lot of gigs)?
2.) Similarly, when I do get a new drive, assuming that's the problem, will OS 8.5.1 be able to format and use it, as I've never done an install of this particular OS before. I'm assuming I just boot from CD and go through the process?
3.) Unfortunately, I've discovered this unit is using the Revision 1 chipset. So I may need to go for some sort of PCI IDE interface option. Any recommendations for a cheap solution here, and is this a definite must to get this working reliably?
4.) The owner of this machine also inquired about a DVD/CD burner (would have to be external as there's no room inside). Any recommendations that would work well with this machine, or is this machine not suited to using these types of drives well?
5.) Can this Apple G3 run Mac OSX well enough, as the client has also expressed interest in upgrading OSes, or is it too slow for this?
Thanks much for any help - this is fairly new territory for me!
    Shaun

    Shaun,
After the iMac killed the used Mac market and the G4 killed the value of the B&W G3, I closed up shop and moved on to better ways of making money. lol
One client wanted a newer mac cheap so I bought her a used B&W G3. One month later they came out with the Mac Mini for $125.00 more than a fully configured B&W. With in the year, that client moved up to a Mini. The B&W has plummeted in value since that day. Current market is G4 or better now.
For a hobby machine, it is still a great computer. To pay for service time at shop rate, that model can quickly become a money pit. You may have already checked out some sites like this:
    http://www.macgurus.com/products/motherboards/mbppcg3bw.php
so I apologize in advance if you already know the history of issues with that machine.
Yes we can walk you through the resurrection of a Blue and ***** ( honest typo) Mac, but religious preferences aside, if you value the client, tell them about the value of a mini. It was built to run OS X. It has behaved flawlessly ( except with MS Office ) for us here.
The model of B&W Mac that you mentioned has many service land mines. Those traps for the unwary can be easily avoided with SCSI interface cards and a SCSI drive. Your fees and the cost of the upgrades might add up to close to the cost of a bare bones Mini. Just something to consider.
First thing to do is to "zap the PRAM" and Texas mac man gives a good tutorial here:
    http://www.geocities.com/texas_macman/pram.html
The Apple OEM HDD firmware is not required but it does make life much easier on your client.
If you have a spare Western Digital IDE drive kicking around, see if you can format it to Mac with Drive Setup in the Utilities folder of any drive you can get to boot that Mac after zapping the PRAM.
The Mini can be ordered with a DVD burner.
    Good luck.

  • Storing music library on an external hard drive troubles

I recently purchased an external hard drive to store my itunes library to for I was filling up my C drive on my PC. I moved all my music to the external hard drive. I have also backed it up to another far larger external drive just in case. I changed the settings under Preferences - Advanced - General to show that the library was now in Drive K:iTunes.
Before I deleted the music of off my C hard drive I purchased a single song to see if it would act correctly. It did. I synced my ipod (Classic 160 Gig)and it added that song to the K drive and to my ipod. I then deleted it from my C drive.
The next time I turned on my computer and opened iTunes it pulled up an empty library. My music is still on the K drive under iTunes and it is backed up on the larger external drive.
I checked the preferences, etc. again and it still says K:iTunes but it doesn't "go there" to pull up the library. It just pops up like I've never purchased or put any music in it. Help!

If you drag the files around through Windows Explorer, iTunes loses track of them. So, to remedy the situation...
Click Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab > General sub-tab
UN check "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library" if selected and click OK
Then click File > Add Folder to Library and add your K:\iTunes\ directory.
Going forward, make sure you always have your external drive connected to your PC and showing in My Computer prior to launching iTunes.
Also, when you purchase music from iTunes or import CD's in the future, they should go directly to your K: drive if you have that set as your default folder location in your Advanced preferences.
If you notice that you have files scattered around on your hard drives, you can go to your Advanced preferences and verify that your K: drive is still your default folder location, and the select the option to Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library. Then, from the Advanced menu of iTunes, click Consolidate Library. This basically looks at the files in your iTunes library, and if it finds any that are not stored in that default location, it copies them there.

  • External Hard Drive Trouble

I use macs all the time and I have a lacie external drive that has done me proud, but I just enrolled in an editing course that teached Avid editing on a....PC...
I can't reformat my existing drive so I need a new one. I'm looking for something small, light, compact, and durable. After this course I will reformat the drive for my mac and take it abroad for a bit of a travel documentary project.
It seems all the drive that fit my description are USB 2.0 which I have always been taught never to use for video work.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm considering getting a Lacie Rugged drive but they are hard to find in stock in stores or online and I need the drive next week.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Matt Chach-
I find the performance of USB drives to be poor at best. FireWire drives are getting very difficult to find, especially in the discount chains.
Since you are happy with the product, have you checked the LaCie site? I found them on the clearance page: LaCie Clearance hard Drives
They are also on the Mobile Hard Drives page: Mobile Hard Drives
I use LaCie products. I always keep a spare power supply brick around.
    Luck-

  • PowerBook Hard Drive Trouble. And it could be serious

    Hi
Yesterday whilst playing Football Manager 2006 my computer locked up. Initially I got the spinning beachball on the game, but then I used expose to get to the desktop and the computer would not respond to any of my mouse clicks (but the beachball had mysteriously disappeared). After I while I forced the computer to shut down (by holding the power button for a few seconds), then rebooted it. It got as far as the Apple logo screen with the twirly thing but that's as far as it got; it would just sit there with the twirly thing twirling.
So I booted the computer off the install DVD and ran Disk Utility. I got the warning "First Aid Failed", giving the cause as "Underlying task reported failure on exit". the info section states "Keys out of order"and "The Volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired."
To get a better idea of things I ran the Apple Hardware Test which the computer passed. I tried to boot the computer again but now it gets to the Apple Logo with the twirly thing and greys out with the "You need to restart your computer" warning, something I'm used to seeing on my old PowerMac but not on my PowerBook.
With this information I attempted to use Target Disk Mode to save some of the data on my hard drive which I haven't backed up (ie most of it. I know, I'm a schmuck). Although the PowerBook displayed the FireWire logo as it should the hard drive did not appear on the other computer. So I shut the PowerBook down again.
Now I've returned to Disk Utility. I've clicked "Repair Disk" and I got the same "First Aid Failed" warning I got when trying to verify. the info window give the following information:
    Keys out of order
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
So this is where I find myself. I've heard good things of an app called DiskWarrior, which can supposedly fix disks that Disk Utility can't... is it worth buying this or is my hard drive comepletey screwed? Or is there anything else I can do? Anything at all?
    Thanks in advance.
15" PowerBook G4 1.67GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1 GB RAM; also every Mac I've owned has had 'issues'. My G4 PowerMac is a pain in the arse too

    *UPDATE*
Last night I ran DiskWarrior... it took several hours (I left it going through the night) and in the morning woke to dicover that it had in fact recovered most if not all of the data on my hard drive. I clicked replace directory and repaired the hard drive, then used DW's hardware to check if the disk was OK. It was, so I quit DW and rebooted my laptop.
    So far so good.
But the laptop still hangs on booting... it gets to the Apple logo with the twirly thing and stays there. It doesn't crash any more. I left it for an hour and a half and it still didn't boot. So I started up from the DiskWarrior CD again and ran a check. It found a couple of new errors, and fixed them. It still won't boot.
I'm guessing that an Archive & Install of OS X would be my next step? If the data on the hard drive is fine but the computer still won't boot, there's gotta be something wrong somewhere.
The major plus is that my data seems to be okay, but maybe the OS has taken a knock.
Let me know your suggestions. Thanks for you help so far.

  • Hard drive troubles- data rescue 3, disk warrior

hello everyone. my internal hard drive stopped mounting and disk utility sees it but all the buttons are dimmed. a friend loaned me data rescue 3 and disk warrior. i have an external hard drive onto which i installed the OS and im booting from that.
i heard that using disk warrior, if it doesnt work right away, might make data recovery more difficult. so i thought i would run DR3 first. i first did the quick mode, which, after a while, gave me a warning and asked to try deep scan. so ive been running deep scan for about an hour now, and at this rate, i estimate it will take data rescue about 8 years to complete scanning my hard drive. =) now that ive been observing it, it seems stuck at a particular block.
anyway, are there any recommendations? should i try the disk warrior boot DVD prematurely if data rescue is still stuck when i wake up tomorrow? apparently, my hard drive has no hardware issues (says data rescue)...
any response will be appreciated...there is a previous post of mine about the earlier stages of this problem if you wanna take a look.
    thanks in advance,

I personally would use Disk Warrior before attempting to recover any data for that exact reason.

  • Hard Drive trouble

Good day. I have a simple question that will probably turn into something bigger. Can a hard drive slow down over time? I have a hard drive that is about 3 years old and it seems to take longer to transfer documents. I have formated the drive and there is no content on it and it's still slow. Any help would be wonderful.

Hard drives tend to slow down as they fill - the less free space there is, the more work the controller has to do to find spare blocks to write new data, and fragmentation (where a file is spread across multiple areas of the disk) can slow down reads, too.
However, reformatting a disk should eliminate any such slowdown, so something else may be amiss. Since performance of shared buses like USB can degrade as more devices are attached, the first one would be how the drive is connected to the system.
Beyond that, it's possible there's something wrong with the drive, but it's hard to tell without more data.

  • New hard drive, trouble starting from disk

I just installed a replacement hard drive. Now when I hold "option" on startup and choose "install disk" (that is the ONLY option), nothing happens... just the apple and spinning flower circle...

if there's a problem with the number of installations, you'll see a message about an excess activation problem.
if that's what you're seeing, contact adobe support for an activation count reset, https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
otherwise, attach a screenshot of the error message or quote it.

  • Time machine second hard drive trouble

I have TM on one drive, and want to back up a second external hard drive. Both are "recognized" in "options," but it will not allow me to select the second drive allowing me to "minus" it so it will be backed up by TM. I've ejected & reconnected both drives twice, shut down & rebooted... all to no avail????

how is the other external drive formatted? it must be formatted mac os extended for TM to be able to back it up. if it's formatted for windows (FAT or NTFS), TM won't back it up.

  • PS3 hard drive trouble

    Hi all.
I just purchased a brand new PS3 slim to replace an old launch model that fell victim to the 'yellow light of death.'
I wanted to take my exsisting 500gb hard drive out of my old playstation and put it into my new PS3 slim.  Upon turning the new unit on with the 500 gb hard drive I get an error message.
I THINK it's because the 500 gb hard drive needs to be reformatted but that's just a guess.  Does anyone have information for me about this??
    Thanks!

    Hello alexandermonica,
    Welcome to the forum!
I think the issue with your hard drive is that it needs to be formatted in order to be used with your new console. As I am not an expert, I would advise that you check out the Sony website for more detailed information on this issue:
