Hard drive vanished?

Last night, the family iMac (17") was asleep (or faking it) when I went to bed. This morning, I got up and found that its fan was running like a jet plane trying to take off, with the screen dark and the glowing spot turned on at a constant (not fluctuating). I forced it to shut down, since it was unresponsive. This afternoon, when we tried to start it up, we got a flashing question mark in a folder icon.
I pulled out the install disk and booted from it, intending to start by repairing the drive... and imagine my surprise when I found that no hard drive showed up in Disk Utility! I ran Apple Hardware Test (extended test), and everything passed. I rebooted again and tried Disk Utility again, but still no hard drive. I went into the installer... and nothing showed up on which to install.
So, seems like the hard drive must have died. I'd prefer to service it myself, rather than trucking it 45 minutes to an Apple Store and paying someone to figure out what's wrong and fix it, but I'm reluctant to go buy a new drive and install it if the problem could be elsewhere. Could this be anything other than a dead hard drive? Might TechTool (which I don't actually own, never having needed it) be able to find the drive if DU can't? And why would AHT have given everything a pass?
Thanks in advance!

As Miriam accurately pointed out, if Disk Utility can't even see the drive then you need to start with a new drive. TechTool would be useless since the drive is not functioning.
I figured as much, but you never know...
AHT is a very basic utility and it doesn't do much except simply look to detect that a hard drive is physically attached.
That's what I thought. Although, you would think that, if no hard drive whatsoever was detected, AHT would be smart enough to flag this as a problem!
My primary reason for asking these questions is just to try to figure out what the chances are that it's not the hard drive, but some other hardware sitting between the hard drive and the rest of the computer that got fried. My wife, who is adamantly PC and is thoroughly enjoying this opportunity to taunt me about my Macs (only fair since I teased her when her PC had to get its motherboard replaced), would not be pleased if I bought a new hard drive and then ended up having to send the machine to the shop anyway when that didn't fix the problem. Would AHT have spotted such a problem? Is there any other way I can test for such a condition?
Do you have a backup drive that you can try booting from?
Unfortunately, no. That machine was never backed up, since it was mainly used for kids' games and "disposable" school reports. All my external drives are currently tied up in backups of my machine.

  • LaCie Hard Drive vanishes after 10.4.9 update...

I've seen this complaint all over the web, but I've seen no helpful solutions from Apple or anyone else. Here's what happened to me.
First off, this is CLEARLY a problem with the latest software update 10.4.9, NOT a problem with my drive, and I'll tell you why in a minute...
After updating my OS to 10.4.9 and restarting the computer, my LaCie 500 gigabyte USB drive's icons vanished from my desktop. I tried ALL of the recommended fixes, including dropping $100.00 on Diskwarrior. Nothing worked.
    Here's the clincher:
I got the bright idea to take my LaCie Drive over to my father-in-law's Mac, which he rarely updates. Sure enough, he had 10.4.8 installed, and my LaCie drive mounted just fine.
As an experiment, I then updated his computer to 10.4.9.
Guess what? The drive disappeared from his computer upon restart!
There is CLEARLY a problem with the 10.4.9 update in reference to external USB hardware at least, if not Firewire as well. I've read at least 50 similar complaints on various forums, and can only assume Apple has realized its error and is working on an update to 10.4.9 at this moment.
I'm going to call Applecare ths afternoon and report the problem. Good luck, all.

    Thanks for replying!
I spoke to Applecare last week; two different people. The first one was a frontline tech support person who claimed to know nothing about these problems. I was then referred to a higher-up person who said he HAD heard about these problems, but was very non-committal about it. I have his number and was told to call back after this Thursday (03-29-07) to check up on it.
With the massive amount of people having the same problem, you'd think a fix would be forthcoming. I recommended to the Mac people at work NOT to run the 10.4.9 updater until Apple gets this resolved, as we rely on our external hard drives rather heavily.
I hope Apple releases a fix soon... more news as I get it.

  • My changes to an external hard drive's files and folders vanished.

Something crazy happened with a Mac-formatted external hard drive I've been working with. Today, out of nowhere, it reverted to a state where tons of organizational work I have done on the folder contents vanished. Files I deleted were restored, files I renamed were back to their old names, and an entire folder of stuff I rendered is missing. This work dates back for weeks. However, photo keywords that I added yesterday are still there. The only thing I can think of is that something weird happened with Time Machine. I briefly connected the hard drive to an iMac yesterday, and loaded up time machine to look at the backups. However, the problem hard drive is not the one that Time Machine backs up to, and I definitely didn't restore any previous backups. I have no idea how this happened.

Where is your Library? On the iMac? On the External? What version of iPhoto do you have?

  • My Hard drive (master) on my G4 has vanished

I have a G4 with a master hard drive and a 2nd hard drive, I came into work and tried to boot up, but screen kept coming up with a question mark "?", I booted from CD and I can only see the 2nd hard drive, is the master Hard drive broke or is the something I can do to try and make it come back to life
All help would be very much appreciated
    Dave

I assume the CD you booted up from was the install disk. While booted did you try running Disk Repair in Disk Utilities? If that doesn't work you may need something a little more robust like DISKWARRIOR. Does the 2nd internal drive have a bootable partition on it?

  • All the free space on my hard drive has vanished!

My hard drive space has disappeared. About two months ago I freed up about 30 gigs and havent really downloaded anything since then. I checked last week and I had about 1 gig left. This was bad and I didnt know the cause of it. I deleted some things and gained a few gigs. I checked back this morning and I had 0 KB available. I deleted something so I could at least save a document that I have and almost as soon as I deleted it, the space freed up disappeared as well and I was back to 0 KB. What in the world is going on here!?

I did just get a new router so I could have wireless internet, perhaps these events are more than coincidental. It seems there might be an inordinate amount of stuff about searching for a network, check it and let me know what you think.

  • Files vanish when copying to external hard drive

Just purchased an iMac 24" and struggling with files disappearing.
We use a laCie external hard drive with firewire connection. Normally we have no trouble just dragging files over to the lacie drive. But twice in the past week the files we drag over just disappear - poof - gone fom the iMac and the laCie. Never happened with the other Macs.
    Any ideas?

Lacie has had problems with several of their drives and Leopard. Expecially the 160 and 400 drives and Porche models.
I'd check their site to see if there is a firmware update that should have been applied to the drive.
The MyBook drives are also going through similar issues and Western Digital considers the problem fixed with their drives by installing a new firmware update that only runs on a windows machine.
I've heard similar problems with Buffalo devices.
These kinds of problems all appear to be caused by Leopard, yet many of the manufacturers are putting out firmware updates, like maybe they didn't follow all of the rules in the transfer protocols they use? Commands like "FSMoveObject and FSCopyObject" run and transfers files since late versions of 10.4. The drives in question, seem to send a "copy complete" code when it isn't actually complete and the Mac deletes the file.
I have not heard of this happening with Hitachi drives.

  • Hard Drive Spaces Vanishes, MacBook won't start

I am quite perplexed and sad because my MacBook is in a terrible state.
So, I normally have limited hard drive space remaining (1 - 3gb) on my drive, but earlier it started bothering me, telling me I had 400mb left. I then deleted some files and brought it back to 2.2gb left. Within a few minutes, I got another warning the hard drive was almost full. Suddenly, it was down to 146mb remaing, steadily decreasing (the only things open were Adium and Update). Then, it had 0kb left and started telling me to force quit applications. I eventually shut down, and now it won't boot. I turn it on, get the grey apple at the rotating graphic, but it stays there. Ironically, I can still boot windows.
Please, if you have any suggestions, I would very much appreciate help.
    Thanks

It sounds like you are building up excessive temporary files. What apps are you running? Have you installed apps lately? You should always keep at least 15% of your drive empty at all times.

  • Hard drive failure on a G72-260US?

I hope someone has a few tips to help me out on this.   I picked up an HP G72-260US about 10 months ago and suspect the hard drive has failed.  I have had no prior problems with the unit.  I was starting to back up about 3 months of photos to DVD and all was well.  I went to refill my coffee cup and when I come back I had a black screen with 'no boot device - insert boot disk and press any key' message on the screen.   I then turned it off and back on and got no boot device again.   I checked in the bios (esc key on startup menu) and the hard drive is no longer listed in the list of boot device order.   I tried the test from this menu and it says I have no hard drive installed.   I used the restore bios default key and saved it but no change.   I unplugged the cable between the motherboard and the drive on both ends and checked but could not see any oxidation.   I removed and inserted both ends of the cable several times just to make sure.    I can hear a solid 'click' when I power down coming from the drive as if the heads are parking so I assume the drive is getting power.   I think I can feel a bit of vibration from the drive and it sounds like it's not spinning up to anywhere near normal speed.   If I put a bootable cd into the cd/dvd drive the unit boots up but the hard drive does not appear in any list - it's like it vanished into thin air.   This is my first HP notebook since I usually purchased another brand so I am hoping there is some trick here that I don't know rather than it came equipped with a 600 hour MTBF hard drive.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Sounds like it has failed,
Install a new one and use the HP recovery discs to install the OS.

  • Setup problem importing library from external hard drive

my old iMac died, and I am setting up iPhoto on my new iMac (10.7.2).  I had backed up my iPhoto library to an external hard drive before the old iMac went kaput.  However, when I try to import this library when setting up iPhoto, the Library file itself is inhibited / not selectable.
I also tried copying the Library to my Pictures folder on the new iMac, but that is failing (error code -36) about a third of the way through.  That incomplete file, also, is inhibited.
appreciate any suggestions on how to confront this problem.  thanks.

    Thanks, Terence.
When I held down the command/option keys, it prompted me to select a Library.  This time, I chose the Library resident on the EHD.  iPhoto then indicated it needed to run an upgrade in order to render the library (paraphrasing - I should've written down what it said).  That took about 20 minutes, and then it proceeded to import.  I could see all of my Events, and everything appeared to be good to go.  My plan was going to be to then figure out a way to get the photos individually backed up and then monkey with it some more until I could have the Library resident on the Mac HD and backed up on the EHD.
However, before I got that far, I noted that many of my Events were empty.  I would see a thumbnail image for it, but clicking in it would indicate that there were zero photos in that Event.  I'm flummoxed.
Right now, I am individually exporting the files to newly created sub-folder within Pictures so that I at least have a copy of everything on the new iMac, but that is failing about a third of the way through and yielding an error indicating that the files cannot be copied to users/....  Further, I'm not exactly sure what to make of the empty Events issue.  I read another thread on this that says to close and re-launch iPhoto with Command/Option held down and run the repairs, but someone had written that their empty events vanished when they closed the application.  Should I proceed?
    Thanks again to you both.

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

  • After iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive, after iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive

I was just about to order a photo book, using photos stored on an external hard drive. I organised the book and pressed 'buy'. IPhotos instructed me that I needed to upgrade and so I went on the ASpp store, bought the upgrade and installed as directed. I then used the iPhoto Library upgrader as directed.
After the iPhoto upgrade I can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive. I am able to access the photos stored on my internal hard drive - the remainder (including the photo album) seem to have vanished into thin air.
    Any suggestions please?

What format is the external drive?

  • IPhoto disappeared from external hard drive

My 3TB hard drive died recently, and I purchased a new iMac and attempted to restore all of my data from my external hard drive. This was successful EXCEPT that my iphoto library has completely diasppeared from my time machine/external hard drive. I have checked every back-up recorded for years and it has completely vanished. I know iphoto had been backing up correctly as I used it just 2 months ago to restore some photos. It would appear from the usage on my external hard drive that the photos are all still there, but I cannot find them anywhere. When I search for iphoto, iphoto.library, and even any jpg files, nothing comes up. Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation please?

Your problem is with the ED, then, isn't it?
And you canmot have an iPhoto Library on a Network share.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
    See this article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
for more. Note also the comment:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”

  • External Hard Drive: Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

I have a LACIE external drive (120GB/ firewire) which has had no problems. Recently, I reformatted to DOS so I could use with a PC. Now, when I plug into my MACBOOK Pro, the drive is not 'recognized. I've tried to repair with Disc Utility but I get the following messages:
+Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit+
    and
+1 volume could not be repaired+
Reading up on the subject, seems I could purchase Disc Warrior but I've also read that there might be a problem with 10.4.10 which potentially could be alleviated by rolling back my OS.
Before I shell out for DW; does anyone have any thoughts on rolling back the OS or perhaps other ways to resolve? What is the correct method for rolling back to a previous OS?
    Best,
    Rod

Hi guys, I just received the same message on my G5 with a hard drive that I've been using for about two years. Today when I turned on my computer, I saw the icon for my second internal hard drive which is a Western Digital 250 Gb. When I clicked on the icon in finder, it didn't show me any files on my drive and soon after, the icon just vanished. I turned off my computer and made sure that all the connections where in properly and they were. I also tried other hard drive to make sure there was nothing wrong with the connectors, and they worked fine. When I go to disk utility, I see my hard drive but its not bolded, the title of the drive is faded and if I try to verify disk or repair, I get the Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972) 1 volume checked, 0 HFS volumes verified, 1 volume failed verification.
I've had hard drives die on me before and I know where they are going to go due to the sound that it makes but today my computer was as quiet as can be. What is the problem here and is there something I can do to get the hard drive to work so I can retireve my data?
    Thanks

  • Hard drive failed or did it??

I have a 10g that is almost 2 years old. This is the second time my music vanished. The first time was about 4 months ago. I took it in to the store and they updated it and everything was fine. The second time, this Monday, I took it into the store, they told me it was "clicking" and with the music having disappeared that meant the hard drive was gone (it has always clicked). I'm skeptical. Both times, the available space and capacity were not the same and the accessories were there. I have the 2.3 version my Itunes is 6.0.4. I have reset, retried, and restarted. Each time I tried to restore the buttons aren't active and my pc freezes up. I have my original disk, but am hesitant to try it. I also tried the reinstall and my pc doesn't acknowledge my Ipod. That happened last time, though. The woman at the genius bar said my only options were to trade in and get a new one, try a non Apple repair place since I am not under warranty, or this discussion site. I apologize for being so long winded about this, but I wanted to give you all the info in the hopes you could advise me...

    Yes to all.
I thought you might have. Rats.
    Did I do something wrong?
Hmm. I don't think so. I know that it seems to take forever when I do this, I usually just hold the buttons down until the iPod goes to something else (main menu, folder icon, sad iPod - the last two when I'm trying to help someone fix the thing).
If it tells me anything, it's that the hold button is in the "on" position. Double check that there isn't any orange showing, and flip it back and forth just to be sure. Again, I'm sure that's something you've likely already done.
As the thing seems a bit wonky anyhow, it wouldn't hurt to try the original CD and see if an older iPod updater can shake the thing loose long enough to test the drive.
If you are not keen on shelling out for a new iPod (I don't like them as much as the 3G), and want to have a pro look at your iPod, a company with many great recommendations is iPodResQ (with whom I have no affiliation except as a customer and from whom I recieve no compensation). They have a $30 overnight diagnostic service. He'll open it up, check the parts, and tell you what needs to be fixed and what your options are. If the drive is on the way out, he can replace it while it's open.
